WACO — Melissa Jones provided No. 14 Baylor a much-needed boost in her return, scoring 17 points with 10 rebounds in a 61-53 victory over No. 8 Texas A&M on Wednesday night.

The Lady Bears (15-4, 2-3 Big 12) had fallen out of the Top 10 without Jones, losing three of the four games their junior guard missed because of a right leg injury described as a precursor to a stress fracture. Though Jones still appeared a bit gimpy at times, she was driving to the basket and diving to the floor after loose balls.

Brittney Griner, the 6-foot-8 freshman sensation, added 20 points and Kelli Griffin 13 for Baylor.

Tyra White had 19 points for Texas A&M (15-3, 3-2), which was held 28 points below its season average.

Baylor made 10-of-10 free throws in the final minute, including six by Griffin and two by Jones to counter a pair of 3-pointers by Texas A&M that got the Aggies within 55-50.

-No. 22 Iowa State 63, No. 11 Oklahoma 56
AMES, Iowa — Anna Prins and Kelsey Bolte each scored 15 points, leading No. 22 Iowa State to a 63-56 victory over No. 11 Oklahoma on Wednesday night for its second straight victory over a ranked opponent.

Alison Lacey added 12 for the Cyclones (16-3, 4-2 Big 12), who have won four consecutive games after an 0-2 start to the conference season.

Oklahoma (14-5, 4-2) cut a 12-point halftime deficit to 38-35 with
10½ minutes to play and looked to be making a final push.

But Prins, who was 1 of 12 from the field in ISU’s win over No. 19
Texas last Saturday, scored six straight points and put the Cyclones back in control. Bolte then had a scoring run of her own, including a 3-pointer from the corner that pushed the lead to 55-46 with 2:57 to play.

Nyeshia Stevenson led Oklahoma in scoring with 14 points. Abi Olajuwon added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

STILLWATER, Okla. — Obi Muonelo scored a season-high 24 points, James Anderson added 19 and Oklahoma State extended its home winning streak to 16 games with a 76-69 victory over Texas A&M on Wednesday night.

Oklahoma State (16-4, 4-2 Big 12) shot a season-best 57.9 percent and won its third straight game, a run that includes a road win over then-No. 10 Kansas State. The Cowboys overcame the absence of starting point guard Ray Penn, who has a stress reaction-type knee injury and missed his second straight game.

Donald Sloan scored 27 points to lead Texas A&M (14-6, 3-3). The Aggies are 1-4 this season in road games.

Oklahoma State won on the ninth anniversary of a plane crash that killed 10 men associated with the Cowboys’ program. It was only the second time since the crash that Oklahoma State has played on the anniversary date.

-Oklahoma 89, Iowa State 84
NORMAN, Okla. — With its top two scorers injured and in street clothes, Oklahoma built a big lead, then held on to beat Iowa State behind Tommy Mason-Griffin and Cade Davis.

Mason-Griffin scored 38 points and Davis added 24 for the Sooners (12-8, 3-3 Big 12), who are 10-0 at home and 2-8 on the road.
Oklahoma won without guard Willie Warren (17.6) and forward Tony Crocker (12.3), both out with sprained right ankles.

Iowa State (12-8, 1-4) had six double-figure scorers, led by Diante Garrett’s 17.

Craig Brackins, who had been averaging 16.0 points and 7.8 rebounds, was held to 13 points and six rebounds.

Oklahoma led by 18 points, but Iowa State cut the deficit to three points four times in the second half, the final time with 6 seconds left. The Sooners clinched it by making 7 of 8 free throws in the final two minutes.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Danario Alexander reached double digits in receptions for the third straight game and Jerrell Jackson had a career day, helping Missouri end a three-game home losing streak in a victory over Iowa State.

Alexander had 11 catches for 173 yards and a 63-yard score, breaking records for single-season and career yardage set by Jeremy Maclin last season. In his last three games, Alexander has 34 catches for 578 yards and five touchdowns. On Saturday, Jackson had eight receptions for 142 yards and a 70-yard score.

Both of the big plays came in the third quarter for Missouri (7-4, 3-4 Big 12). Iowa State (6-6, 3-5) led 17-10 at halftime.

Blaine Gabbert was 23 for 32 for 337 yards and two touchdowns and had 51 yards on 12 carries, helping fill the void after Derrick Washington sustained a concussion in the second quarter.

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska all but gift-wrapped this upset for Iowa State.

And first-year coach Paul Rhoads and his upstart Cyclones will gladly take it.

The Cornhuskers matched a school record by committing eight turnovers, including four inside the Iowa State 5, and the Cyclones posted a 9-7 upset Saturday for their first victory in Lincoln since 1977.

“I feel really blessed to get this win, and I know that’s the way the rest of the team feels,” defensive tackle Nate Frere said. “Whacky game, but that’s how it goes sometimes.”

Whacky, indeed.

Iowa State was without its top two offensive playmakers because of injury, and other players were physically ill before the game and during halftime because of a stomach bug.

The 18½-point-underdog Cyclones ended a 15-game Big 12 losing streak in games played away from Ames, Iowa, and now have their most wins since going 7-5 in 2005. They need just one more win to become bowl eligible.

After close losses to Kansas State and Kansas, the Cyclones have beaten Baylor and Nebraska in consecutive weeks and become a factor in the Big 12 North.

“When you don’t win in a stadium on the road since 1977, it’s big,” Rhoads said. “This is a program that has as much tradition as anybody in college football. This is a program that was in the Top 25 a week ago. It’s a big win.”

Before Saturday, Nebraska had won 126 straight games in which it held the opponent to 10 points or fewer. But it had been 456 games — since the 1972 Iowa State game — that the Huskers had been so careless with the ball.

“Eight turnovers?” Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said incredulously. “We could have gotten run out of the stadium. I don’t know if I’ve ever been around that in my coaching career.”

The Cyclones took no chances offensively.

Jerome Tiller filled in for regular starting quarterback Austen Arnaud (injured throwing hand) and Jeremiah Schwartz for Big 12 rushing leader Alexander Robinson (sore groin).

Tiller ran 19 times for 65 yards and completed nine of 19 passes for 102 yards, his biggest throw a 47-yarder to Jake Williams for a second-quarter touchdown. Schwartz pounded away at Nebraska’s defensive front 22 times for a hard-earned 50 yards.

Most important, the Cyclones committed no turnovers.

“If you picked a place for your backup quarterback to start a game, I promise you it wouldn’t be Memorial Stadium,” Rhoads said. “He looked pretty cool to me and he had a lot of people hitting him. It was a very physical football game.”

Still, the Huskers were never out of the game.

“Anybody else who would have had that kind of advantage would have won by 30 or 40 points,” Rhoads said. “Credit Nebraska. They have an unbelievable defensive football team and a coaching staff that got them to hang around.”

Nebraska’s comeback hopes ended when Zac Lee was intercepted by Michael O’Connell and Jesse Smith in the final 3 minutes. It was the Huskers’ second straight loss at home, following a 31-10 defeat to Texas Tech.

Pelini reopened the competition for the starting quarterback’s job, although Lee, the season-long starter, played the whole game and finished 20 of 37 for 248 yards.

“We didn’t play well around Zac,” Pelini said. “We had dropped balls and bad execution around him. We had a chance to have a boatload of points on the board and we put the ball on the ground. We were lucky to be in the football game.”

Iowa State converted two of Nebraska’s three first-half turnovers into points.

Grant Mahoney’s 52-yard field goal put the Cyclones up 3-0 after Roy Helu Jr. fumbled on the game’s first play from scrimmage. Dontrayevous Robinson’s 3-yard run gave Nebraska a 7-3 lead, and the Huskers were on the verge of adding to it after driving to the Iowa State 16.

That’s when David Sims intercepted his fourth pass of the season on a freak play.

Mike McNeill looked like he would be able to snag a tipped pass over the middle, but James Smith stripped it from the tight end, and the closing-in Helu knocked it up in the air just enough to allow Sims to grab it before it hit the ground.

Tiller hit Williams on the touchdown pass the play after punter Mike Brandtner ran 20 yards for a first down on a fake. Mahoney had his extra-point kicked blocked, his fourth miss in four games.

Nebraska bungled another first-half scoring chance when Lee hit Niles Paul with a long pass along the sideline. But Paul was tripped up at the Iowa State 7, and the ball dropped out of his hands and into the end zone, where James Smith recovered for the Cyclones.

The Huskers turned over the ball on their first three possessions of the second half. Helu fumbled into the end zone, Frere stripped the ball from Robinson at the Cyclone 5 and Menelik Holt fumbled after catching a pass from Lee.

“We had chances to win the game,” McNeill said. “We just beat ourselves.”

AMES, Iowa- Iowa State started the season by snapping a 10-game losing streak. The Cyclones then erased a 17-game road losing skid, and on Saturday night they rolled to their first Big 12 win since 2007.

Austen Arnaud threw for 166 yards and scored two touchdowns as Iowa State snapped an 11-game losing streak in Big 12 play by beating Baylor.

Marquis Hamilton added nine catches for 97 yards for the Cyclones (4-3, 1-2), who picked up their first conference victory since downing Colorado two years ago.

Iowa State, which was never seriously threatened by the Bears, is two wins shy of bowl eligibility with five games left to play.

The Cyclones jumped out to a 14-3 halftime lead on a 1-yard TD run by Arnaud and a 4-yard touchdown pass from Arnaud to Derrick Catlett. Iowa State then blocked a punt midway through the third quarter, setting up a 20-yard touchdown run by Jerome Tiller to make it 24-3.

Iowa State was 12 of 18 on third-down conversions and had 454 yards of total offense.

Blake Szymanski threw for 223 yards but tossed three interceptions for the Bears (3-3, 0-2), who lost their 21st straight game in which they trailed at halftime. Baylor scored on a touchdown pass from Szymanski to Justin Akers with 9 seconds left. The Bears have scored just 17 points in two Big 12 games.

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State could very easily play a game of coulda, shoulda woulda.

The Cyclones could be 5-1 and 2-0 in the Big 12. They should have at least forced overtime against Kansas State two weeks ago and they would have stunned No. 17 Kansas had Austen Arnaud’s pass with about a minute left not sailed a yard over Darius Darks’ outstretched hands.

Paul Rhoads isn’t having it. Iowa State’s first-year coach doesn’t believe in moral victories, just real ones, and that’s what he’s hoping for when the Cyclones (3-3, 0-2 Big 12) host Baylor (3-2, 0-1) tonight

“We’d love nothing more than to be 5-1 right now. We’re (a few) plays away from being that. But that’s what losers say,” Rhoads said. “That’s what a team that’s 3-3 says.”

What Rhoads won’t say is that the journey to 3-3 could set the Cyclones up for better success – also known as victories – down the road.

Iowa State has clearly made strides through the first half of the season. The Cyclones have already snapped a 10-game losing streak dating to 2008 and they broke a 17-game road winless streak at Kent State on Sept. 19.

Next up on Iowa State’s wish list is to stop an 11-game skid in the Big 12. To do so, the Cyclones will have to get by a Baylor team that crushed them, 38-10, last season in Waco.

But the Bears will be without the player who hurt Iowa State the most in that blowout, quarterback Robert Griffin. He’s out for the season with a knee injury, and Baylor has yet to settle on who’ll be behind center against Iowa State.

Senior Blake Szymanski was in line to take over for Griffin before injuring his shoulder, but he got some playing time late in Baylor’s 33-7 loss at No. 20 Oklahoma and is listed as the starter.

Szymanski hasn’t had much practice time in the past two weeks, and freshman Nick Florence showed poise in replacing him – even though the Bears could manage just seven points against the Sooners.

“I think he has been very protective with the football, very poised, very intelligent,” Baylor coach Art Briles said of Florence.

Baylor’s bigger concern might be stopping Iowa State’s resurgent rushing attack.

When the Cyclones plucked offensive coordinator Tom Herman from Rice to implement a spread offense in Ames, most figured Iowa State was set to join the rest of the Big 12 and start flinging the ball around at will.

The Cyclones have thrown it some, as Arnaud passed for 293 yards in the loss at Kansas, but their offense has been keyed by Arnaud’s legs and a breakout season from junior Alexander Robinson.

Robinson, despite a sore groin, rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns against the Jayhawks. He’s second in the Big 12 in rushing yards per game and is averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Arnaud has rushed for 389 yards and six touchdowns.

Baylor ranks 94th in the nation in rushing defense.

“They are fast-paced, very similar to a lot of teams in the Big 12 on how they do it. They keep you off balance from a defensive standpoint and they are doing it with experienced people,” Briles said.

Though neither coach will come right out and say it, this is a big game for both teams as far as bowl eligibility goes. Iowa State and Baylor are halfway there, but picking up those final three wins in Big 12 play could prove difficult.

Baylor, which hasn’t played in a bowl in 14 years, still has to face Oklahoma State, Nebraska and Texas. The Cyclones have to play the Cornhuskers and Missouri on the road along with a home date against the Cowboys.

Before Iowa State can start dreaming of a bowl trip, the Cyclones have to start winning the games they could and should win.

“Our goal is and our expectations are to continue to improve as a football team, and we are doing that. We’re pleased with that,” Rhoads said. “We’re not pleased with losing.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Well, it appears that Kansas wide receivers Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier don’t deserve all the credit for their big day Saturday against Iowa State. Note to Big 12 defensive coordinators: Don’t do what the Cyclones did.

“Iowa State came in and played their base defense and didn’t double-team either one of us,” Briscoe said.

It may be hard to believe that Iowa State wouldn’t have tried something different against arguably the country’s top receiving duo, but go ahead and believe it.

“They were comfortable and confident in what they were doing,” Meier said. “They came out and did all the things we thought they were going to do throughout the week and prepared for. What we were doing on offense and what they were doing on defense was just a bad combination.”

For the Cyclones, that is. Meier expects that the Jayhawks will have it much tougher Saturday at Colorado. The Buffaloes like to mix up their coverage and throw a lot of looks at opposing offenses.

“Anytime you can throw a bunch of different coverages out there, especially with the type of offense we’ve got where we’re reading stuff on the run, it can really throw things out of whack,” Meier said.

Last week, Meier caught a school-record 16 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns, and Briscoe caught 12 passes for 186 yards and two scores. At one point in the game, Briscoe had broken the school’s record for career receptions. Meier later broke Briscoe’s record and now leads with 167 to Briscoe’s 165. Can the Jayhawks do it again against a Colorado defense that gave up 54 points to Toledo earlier this season?

“Encore?” Meier asked. “I sure hope so. We’ve got a great challenge in front of us. It ain’t gonna be easy. These guys, the type of coverages they play, it can get confusing. If we just stay on task and do the things we do on a daily basis, we’re very capable of having another big week.”

If they do, that will mean more jockeying between Briscoe and Meier for the career receptions record. After KU’s 41-36 victory over Iowa State, “I told him I’d get him next game,” Briscoe said.

While Meier had more catches, it was Briscoe as usual who made the highlight reel plays. Briscoe won the battle against an Iowa State cornerback for a 46-yard touchdown pass.

“It was having that competitive nature like it’s just one-on-one and I gotta win for my quarterback,” Briscoe said.

KU quarterback Todd Reesing and the Jayhawks are certainly winning with Briscoe and Meier’s battle for the record books.

“It’s always good for the team,” Briscoe said. “It’s a healthy competition. Me and Kerry go at it all the time. We help each other out as far as getting each other open. We’re both great receivers. We’ll see how it goes at the end of the season.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Todd Reesing threw for 442 yards and four touchdowns and Kerry Meier set two school receiving records in leading No. 16 Kansas over Iowa State in a game filled with big plays and missed extra points.

Iowa State’s Austen Arnaud, scrambling on fourth-and-9, had Darius Darks in the open in the end zone but overthrew him with a minute left and the Jayhawks (5-0, 1-0 in the Big 12) held on.

Reesing was 37 for 49 and tied his own school record with 37 completions. The Jayhawks scored twice in the fourth quarter after the Cyclones (3-3, 0-2) took a 30-27 lead behind Arnaud and Alexander Robinson, who ran for 152 yards and two TDs. Arnaud passed for 293 yards and two scores.

Meier had 16 catches for 142 yards and two TDs, and teammate Dezmon Briscoe had 12 catches for 186 and two more scores.

Meier now holds school records for career receptions and his 16 catches broke the single-game mark he had shared with Briscoe.

One of the biggest cheers of the day was for Jacob Branstetter’s extra point following Kansas’ second touchdown. Until then, he and Iowa State’s Grant Mahoney had combined to go 0 for 3 on PATs, usually a non-suspenseful play.

After Reesing’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Meier put Kansas ahead 41-30, Arnaud led the Cyclones down field and with 4:55 left connected with Darks on a 5-yard pass. But he missed a 2-point conversion pass attempt.

Arnaud was 25 for 40 for 293 yards.

Reesing, who already owns most of the school’s passing records, hit Meier with a 3-yard TD pass late in the first half and then made it 20-12 with a 4-yard run up the middle with 30 seconds to go.

Iowa State, which squandered a 20-point halftime lead against Kansas last year, took a 23-20 lead in the third quarter with Grant Mahoney’s 34-yard field goal and Arnaud’s 2-yard run and 2-point conversion pass.

After Reesing’s 23-yard TD pass to Briscoe put Kansas on top 27-23, Arnaud connected with Maquis Hamilton on a 17-yard scoring pass that gave Iowa State a 30-27 lead.

Back came the Jayhawks. Briscoe got open on a 46-yard scoring pass less than 1 minute into the fourth quarter Then with 8:43 left, Meier worked himself entirely free in the end zone and Reesing drilled the ball into his chest for a 41-30 lead.

Robinson, who sat out most of last week’s game with a groin injury, scored on runs of 1 and 7 yards.

The day started brutally for Iowa State’s special teams, continuing the nightmarish ending to a 24-23 loss the week before when Kansas State blocked Mahoney’s PAT attempt with 31 seconds to go.

Until then, Mahoney had kicked 47 PATs in a row. But Saturday, he missed after each of the Cyclones’ first two touchdowns. In the second quarter when Mahoney lined up for a 26-yard field goal attempt, holder Derec Schmidgall mishandled the snap. The Cyclones finally made something happen when Mahoney made good on a 34-yarder to cut the lead to 20-15 with 9:58 left in the third.

The career receptions record changed hands twice in the first half. Briscoe started the day with 153 and surpassed Mark Simmons’ school record of 155 with his fourth catch, a second straight 13-yard gain fueling the Jayhawks first touchdown drive.

But by the end of the half, Meier had caught up. Meier, who started his career as a quarterback, began the day with 151 catches and had 11 for 98 yards in the first half, giving him 162 to Briscoe’s 159. It’s a record that’s likely to be passed back and forth the rest of the season.

NORMAN, Okla.- Freshman quarterback Landry Jones threw three touchdown passes in his first career start and No. 13 Oklahoma routed Idaho State 64-0 on Saturday night.

Jones, replacing injured Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford, found a favorite target in Ryan Broyles, who caught scoring passes of 24, 51 and 11 yards and finished with seven catches for 155 yards for Oklahoma (1-1), which bounced back from a season-opening loss to BYU.

The Bengals of the Big Sky Conference had minus-2 yards of offense in the first half and 44 for the game, including minus-22 yards rushing.

• Iowa 35, Iowa State 3

AMES, Iowa – Ricky Stanzi threw a career-high four touchdown passes and Iowa forced six turnovers in beating Iowa State, the Hawkeyes’ first victory on their rivals’ field in six years.

Iowa, which fell out of the Top 25 after squeezing out a 17-16 victory over Northern Iowa a week ago, had a much easier time in what’s annually the state’s biggest athletic event.

Tyler Sash tied a school record by making three of Iowa’s five interceptions, and the Hawkeyes (2-0) also recovered a fumble. Stanzi and the offense converted four of those turnovers into touchdowns.

Though he wasn’t especially sharp against the Cyclones (1-1), Stanzi still completed 18 of 34 passes for 197 yards with two interceptions.

• Missouri 27

Bowling Green 20

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Blaine Gabbert threw two second-half touchdown passes and Derrick Washington scored the go-ahead TD late in the fourth quarter, helping No. 25 Missouri rally from a dud start to beat Bowling Green in its home opener.

Washington had 120 yards on 23 carries for the Tigers, who jumped into the rankings after an impressive opening victory over Illinois and needed a strong finish for any hope of staying there. Missouri (2-0) trailed 13-0 in the second quarter and 20-6 midway in the third before awakening.

Tyler Sheehan was 29 for 46 for 206 yards and a touchdown, and Willie Geter had 99 yards on 20 carries with a 1-yard scoring run for Bowling Green, which capitalized on a pair of fumbles for two first-half field goals before fading.

• La. Lafayette 17

Kansas State 15

LAFAYETTE, La. – Tyler Albrecht hit a 48-yard field goal with 32 seconds left to lift Louisiana-Lafayette a victory over Kansas State.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (2-0) trailed 15-14 before driving from their 33 to the Kansas State 30 to set up the game-winner and give Louisiana-Lafayette its first win over a BCS conference member since 1996.

Kansas State (1-1) rallied from a 14-2 deficit with two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Wildcats running back Daniel Thomas threw for one score and ran for one.

• Kansas 24, UTEP 7

EL PASO – Jake Sharp ran for 104 yards and three touchdowns while No. 24 Kansas got two big punt returns from Daymond Patterson to beat Texas-El Paso.

Todd Reesing completed 25 of 41 attempts for 260 yards passing with one interception. He threw a 5-yard TD to Sharp and worked again Dezmon Briscoe, who returned from a one-game suspension and had eight catches for 154 yards.

The Jayhawks finished with 576 total yards and their defense racking up five sacks and held UTEP (0-2) to negative rushing yards until the closing minutes.

• Nebraska 38, Arkansas State 9

LINCOLN, Neb. – Zac Lee passed for 340 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 22 Nebraska warmed up for next week’s trip to Virginia Tech with a victory over Arkansas State.

The Cornhuskers (2-0) scored on five of their first six possessions, ending any hopes the Red Wolves (1-1) had of pulling an even bigger upset than their win at Texas A&M last year.

Lee completed 27 of 35 passes to 11 different receivers and threw no interceptions. He opened the game leading two straight 80-yard drives and a 46-yarder as the Huskers jumped ahead 21-0.
