Big 12 reprimands Tech coach Tuberville for critical comments
Tommy Tuberville has yet to coach a football game for Texas Tech, but he’s already been punished by the Big 12 Conference.
The Big 12 publicly reprimanded the Red Raiders’ new coach on Friday for comments he made earlier this week about the league’s unity and viability.
In a Tuesday interview broadcast on Rivals.com, Tuberville said, “We have a 10-team league right now, but I just don’t know how long that’s going to last, to be honest with you.”
The Big 12 issued the reprimand on its athletic website, saying Tuberville’s comments were a “violation of the Big 12 Conference’s Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship, prohibiting public criticism of members.”
“Tommy Tuberville’s comments were unfortunate, and contrary to the very strong feelings of unity expressed publicly and privately by the Big 12 Board of Directors and athletic directors,” Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe said in a statement. “Coach Tuberville has admitted that his comments do not reflect his true feelings of respect for the conference, its leadership, and his excitement about its future and has apologized to the conference and its members.”
Tuberville was vacationing in Alabama on Friday and could not be reached for comment. Tech athletic spokesman Blayne Beal said the Big 12 asked the school not to comment on the issue.
The Big 12 concluded its statement by saying, “This will serve as the final decision and comment on this matter by all parties.”
In Tuesday’s interview, Tuberville said the Big 12’s member schools lack “camaraderie” like there is in the Southeastern Conference. Prior to being hired to coach the Red Raiders in January, Tuberville had spent his entire 14-year coaching career with SEC teams Auburn and Mississippi.
“It starts with the commissioner,” Tuberville said in the interview. “And I think (SEC commissioner) Mike Slive has done a good job. (Former SEC commissioner) Roy Kramer did a good job of building a base where everybody was on the same page. And that just has not happened here in the Big 12.”
Tuberville also questioned the Big 12’s uneven distribution of television revenue, again comparing the league to the SEC.
“I don’t think this conference will last long because there is too much disparity between all the teams,” he said in the interview. “In the SEC, for instance, Vanderbilt makes as much money in the television contract as Florida. Everybody is good with it. Everybody is on the same page. Everyone gets the same votes.
“That doesn’t happen here in the Big 12. We have some teams that get a little bit more money and have a little bit more stroke than some of the other teams. And when that happens, you’re going to have teams looking for better avenues to leave and reasons to leave.”
The Big 12’s livelihood was in jeopardy last month, when in the span of two days Colorado and Nebraska announced their decisions to join other conferences. The Buffaloes are bolting for the Pac-10 , and Nebraska is headed to the Big Ten.
Tech, Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State also received invitations from the Pac-10 as part of a package deal, and A&M flirted with the idea of joining the SEC.
But the league’s 10 remaining schools decided to stick together with the promise of more lucrative television deals.
In his statement, Beebe indicated that he went easy on Tuberville for expressing his doubts about the league’s prospects for longevity. The commissioner also issued somewhat of a warning.
“In deciding to reprimand Coach Tuberville, I took into account that this is a first-time offense and that he has committed to adhere to the rules and contribute to strengthen the conference,” Beebe said. “If not for these factors, a more significant penalty would be assessed, and will be if there are any future violations.”

Dan Beebe is a weasle. He has a lot of nerve reprimanding Tuberville after the fiasco he was responsible for that gave UT, OU, and TAMU (who is so unworthy) the glory share of revenue. Tuberville spoke his mind and was right on the money. Beebe can’t handle the truth. He’s the ultimate spin doctor. I hope the Little X has the sense to get rid of this pariah ASAP!

OK……I haven’t seen much from TT to get behind him until now. UT continues to run this conference and will as long as they have the Big 12 commissioner in their back pocket. Unity? What does UT, TAMU & OU understand about unity? Nebraska had an option and took it because they knew that the Big 12 is really the Big one and everybody else dances to what they want. Disgusting.

This is ridiculous, a coach cannot express a valid and fact based opinion. This is America? Right? I vote to leave the Russian Federations known as the Big 12. Hope I do not get a reprimand.

Totally ludicrous!! Totally insane!!!!! Beebe should have kept this all private and it would have been alot better. I guess he doesnt like being compared to the SEC commish! Obviously they are a happier house over there than we are. To allow this to be publicized is so unnessary especially at this crucial time when alot of conference members are getting over a few things.
I have said in several comments already that Dan (kiss UT-a**) Beebe has got to be fired as he only did at the time what he thought might be best for the confence (not to say he would also keep his job as Big 12 commish) or at least it was his grasp at a straw. He took advantage of several of our honorable brother conference schools to tell them to pay up to keep UT and OU in our conference a few more years. Face it ! He did what was best for himself and certainly not what was best for the majority of Big 12 schools (including Tech) trying to make us pay our millionsat stake in the fines for Nebraska and Colorado that they will pay to the Big 12 conference for leaving without a 2 yr notice. Hell! UT and OU dont even NEED the money and UT now says it doesnt want our share. Course this was all Beebe’s idea (and he has kept his job) to reward the rich schools and take away from the others. That’s what good coach TT is talking about. He said it about as gentlemanly as possible. And for Beebe to publicly reprimand him is ridiculous.
Let me catch you in Midland, Beebe, and I will show you what is good for the Big 12 by giving you a big kick in your rear as we run you out of town, out of Texas, and out of the Big 12! Any sports-minded administrator can do your job and probably much better. You will be history – short history!!!

He just said what everyone else was thinking. The longhorn fans think that UT saved the big 12. Wrong. Beebe just saved his job. I do not blame UT for this situation. Beebe chased after UT, made them a great deal. tech would have jumped all over that too. And IF IF IF the reports from OU and A&M are even true, Beebe had to figure out how to keep them too. Has anybody actually heard officially if the SEC offer OU or A&M them a spot or is this all self proclaimed to put them in position to follow Texas? Think about it. The big12 and pac 10 were both package deals. Why would the SEC want A&M independently from UT? OU I can understand.
But if you really want proof in Tubby’s statements about other schools looking for better options…..wait where is CU and NU again? Get a life Beebe.

As a Husker fan I’ve got to say that I feel sorry for you guys, the only schools left in the Big 12 that can potentially make it into another conference without riding another teams coat tails are Texas, aTm, Oklahoma, Mizzou and maybe Kansas. I really hate to see the other teams in the conference get treated this way and I hate to end our series with Kansas, Mizzou, Colorado, Oklahoma and even Texas. For the sake of all of you in the conference I hope that Texas does create their own network and it falls flat on it’s face. This way perhaps Texas will have to learn to play fair with it’s other conference partners. Au revoir friends, we’ll be watching from our new home.

Well, well, seems like Dan Beebe still hasn’t learned what issuing ultimatums does. Now he threatens Longhorn jr academy. Oooh not that big bad Beebe. Yep Tech has nowhere to go, Tuberville will though. He will jump at the next contract that comes up , because coaching the Washington Generals can only go on for so long. The money is good, but he will really want to coach where the opportunity to win isn’t destroyed so the “conference” can make more money. How dare you speak what you see as the truth Tuberville! Goodluck in Lubbock, Longhorn Jr Academy. You really should have jumped to the Pac 10 if you honestly had the chance.

Actually TT got it right…. the ‘UNITY’ of the “Big 12″ will only be there as long as Texass is kept happy. I think NU and CU saw the writing on the wall, and had had enough… When will the rest of the Big 12 stand up to Texass? or are they whopped by the horns? Everything BB did over the past couple of month wasn’t for the unity of the Big 12, it wasn’t for all the schools of the Big 12, it was to keep Texass happy and give them what they wanted.. Hey! congrads to Texass, they got what they wanted, but until the other 9 schools in the converence grow some, it will always be referred to as ‘The Big 1 & little 9′ good luck big 12 (10), or whatever your going to be called.

It’s all about texas. They want everyone to think they did the honorable thing to save the conference. When in fact they just did what was best for themselves. The pac 10, big 10 and SEC aren’t going to allow the longholes to run their conference. They’d have to share evenly and would only get one vote just like the weakest team in the conference. texas will hang with the big 12 as they can have everything their way. But once they get their network set up they will be able to go the independent route like Notre Dame. If the longhole network becomes a reality, I hope that the satelite/cable providers offer it as an option and not just throw it in with the other sports channels. That would make texas pay it’s own way for a change. The rest of us won’t have to subsidize them any more and we also won’t have to program that channel out.

To me, Tubbs did nothing but state the obvious. He’s absolutely right, a league that has uneven distribution of TV money is a league dying a slow death. Especially considering that the three teams with an uneven distribution are also the teams given the ability to go out and start their own television network!!! I enjoy the fact that Tech plays in the same conference as UT, OU, OSU, and even A&M. However, I think it would be foolish for Tech not to explore going to the PAC 10. The expanded PAC 10 would have been an incredible conference. UT just couldn’t stand the fact that they would not be the big dog in that conference. They would have to share that limelight with USC. Therefore, they, all by themselves, destroyed what would have been a great thing for everyone. Another thing, can someone explain to me why UT runs the Big 12 in football??????? Has anyone bothered to look at the history of OU compared to UT? Doesn’t make sense to me. I guess it’s all about TV and money. Funny, I thought it was supposed to be about athletics and academics.
And to “TTU cry babies”, TTU may not have had anywhere to go this time. But it’s all coming to a head.

Texas Tech who has pretty much owned A&M over the last 10 years has been left out of the money while A&M gets a share of the Pot of Gold. It clearly has caused disparity with Tech and Tech fans so, Tubervilles comments are not with out merit! I think Tech needs to start shopping themselves around and get the hell out of this crappy conference. Beebe is not a good commisioner and he is ultimately going to be the downfall of the Big12. Colorado and Nebraska are looking like the smartest two schools in the conference. Tech is not attached at the hip with Texas. Cut the cord!!!

Beebe’s response is strong evidence that what Tuberville said is true. It does start with the commissioner and there is little if any camaraderie in the conference because of his poor leadership. The Big 12 might last if and when a decent commissioner is hired.

The question I have is, “Where is Oklahoma in this whole mess?”
Why would a school with the proud football, basketball, and baseball history of OU meekly go along with whatever Texas wants?
Maybe OU needs to stand on their own two feet and start saying they matter in some of this.
Tuberville stated what he saw. Coming from the SEC, he saw how a real conference operates. He could not believe that one team could run a conference, and he stated it.
Yes, he violated the rules, and yes, he was rebuked.
But that doesn’t change the fact that what he said was true.

I thought all you Texans revered your freedoms, your right to say what you wish without fear of reprimand. Tuberville was merely stating the obvious, that the conference is nothing more than Texas and its vassals. Beebe is such a bumbling fool. Tub just stated the balatant truth. The Pac-16 was set to be a heck of a great conference and Texas only changed their mind because they saw a chance to have a wider gap in the Lite 10. We would be set to make $20 plus million and in the nation’s best overall conference ad instead we are supposed to be in this conference to just serve Texas along with the rest. If A&M prefered the SEC that would have been fine. Kansas was ready and willing to be the final member in the first superconference and give a major boost to their revenues and national profile. I guess we are so lucky that Beebe “took it easy” on TT. He sure sound stern in stating that won’t be the case next time. In this UT controlled conference you either pay them their heavy taxes or stand up like Osbourne did. I respect Tub a lot for saying what he did. TT should just keep its line of communications open with the Pac-10. Texas can only be tolerated if they have a USC counterpart and don’t keep others down. Maybe in a few years Oklahoma and Kansas will join us and WE can decide whether or not UT should be the last member of the Pac-16.

Thank you Mr. Beebe for providing a case example of how NOT to handle an internal issue.
He should have approached Tommy privately, over the phone or in person, and settled the dispute out of the spotlight. Instead Beebe stages a public lashing, putting some passing comments by a coach back in the headlines.
Beebe has forgotten his job. It isn’t to silence public comment and appease the big dog(s). A conference is a joint venture designed to improve the status of all of its members. The commissioner’s job is to focus on growth which goes beyond negotiating a new TV contract every decade and trying to negotiate for a handful of better bowl appearances.
Delany and the Big Ten gets it. Scott and the PAC gets it. The concept appears lost on Beebe and UT.
Worse part is… Tommy’s comments are all true.
The Big Ten may come calling on Missouri within the year. The Big Ten may come calling 3 or 4 years from now (a team may not make financial sense for expansion now, but they might when the broadcast contract comes closer to renewal in 2016). They had informal discussions with Missouri, Texas, and Texas A&M. Just the loss of Missouri would drop the Big 12s footprint down to a population of under 35 million.
The PAC may come calling again 3 or 4 years from now when they have a new broadcast contract and their own version of the Big Ten Network making a profit.
Beebe counters with the traditions of a conference less than 2 decades old, maybe some rivalries, and shorter travel.
The PAC and Big Ten would be offering increased coverage, enormous amounts of shared revenue, a more equitable distribution, and an even standing in conference issues.
Colorado left. Nebraska left. Missouri wanted to leave. Baylor sought an invite. Iowa State, Kansas State, and Kansas wish they had a viable option to accept. Texas A&M (and perhaps OU) was looking to part from UT, TT, and Okie Lite. There are no good viable candidates to replace any team that leaves. This isn’t the make-up of a successful joint venture.
Go ahead – quote some forced comments by an administrator. Pretend the independent search firms with access to information we could only dream of (TV demographics, balance sheets, etc.) were wrong and the loss of Nebraska and Colorado was good for the Big 12. Keep these comments handy Beebe – you may need to regurgitate the same comments when another member leaves… but the obvious is there for anyone to see – the Big 12 is tied together by a very thin string.
Good luck to the Big 12. but I don’t see it as being viable in the long term.

Agreed with most of these messages – TT called it like it is in the Big 12. I think [UT] Big 12 Commish Beebe’s crazy reaction says it all. Who believes that TT’s comments didn’t reflect his “true feelings”? What a bunch of baloney, forced on a guy who knows he’s a coach in a dying conference. My advice to Tech is to strike out on your own and find a new conference home, hopefully leaving UT in its crumbling conference, of its own doing.

I read on espn that the Lone Star Conference is realigning….there is techs chance. I say….what is everybody in arms about. If UT was so arrogant they would have bolted to greener pastures. However, they are a compassionate bunch and thought of the welfare of their little brothers (Tech, KU, KSU, ISU, and Baylor).

So TTU (and Okie Lite for that matter) is going to be making $14 to $17 million per year when the Pac 10 was promising $20 million as part of an equal revenue sharing agreement and Beebe’s actually surprised people are upset about that? It would be irresponsible/stupid for anyone from either TTU or OSU to say they are happy about this deal. Unless overpayment for Big 12 TV rights continues in perpetuity (which is probably doubtful should Fox becomes a partner in the new Pac 10 Network as they are in the Big Ten) then the Pac 10′s offer, which still makes a world of sense, is going to look more and more tempting. At some point there just won’t be enough money to unequally share to keep the conference together, especially if the Big Ten ever does come calling for Missouri and the St. Louis TV market goes bye-bye. On the bright side once the Fox cable deal is extended so it and the ABC/ESPN deal expire simultaneously in 2016, that will give enough time for the Pac 10 Network to be founded and become profitable so they can come to the table next time with some more solid numbers.
In the end we’re going to end up in the exact same place it appeared we were last month, just with a whole lot more upset people along the way, and a whole lot of potential revenue missed out on. Thanks, Texas!

Coach Tuberville spoke the truth with his initial statement…I think everyone knows that. The Big 12 administration/UT (or should it be UT adminstration/Big 12…I guess it doesn’t matter as they’re one and the same) would like to silence him and anyone else who is willing to talk the truth. Nebraska did what was clearly best for them (as a Husker I’m thrilled with the Big 10!) and what Missouri, Kansas and anyone else with the same opportunity would do if they had the chance. Texas got what they wanted–they were never going to leave the Big 12 for the PAC10 or anywhere else because they would no longer be running things. They played the PAC10 and the remaining Big 12 schools and got what they wanted–more money, more control, more “ego”–and the current Big 12 is what remains (at least in the shrort-term…Tuberville was right, it won’t be around long time). UT is a fine school and has a lot of great fans but Texas’s greed and ego will kill the Big 12, just as it did the SWC, and then they’ll find someone else to blame. I feel sorry for Nebraska’s long time friends, especially KU and OU, but if you kiss UT’s butt you will get what you deserve. The only winner in this deal is Nebraska–now in a stable conference, where schools are treated as equals, more money (projections for five years suggest $35-40 mil per team), a potentially huge increase in research dollars (how many jobs will $100 to $200 mil increase in annual reseach grants bring it?), better academic situation and–maybe most of all–with their reputation, character and integrity intact! BEEBE is a fraud. A twit, a punk, a nerd by any standards. The TT coach told it like it is! Nebraska said it all along and the rest of our conference didnt have the BEEBEE’s to stand with them. Now they are gone. We look foolish. The laughing stock of college athletics. This fall I will be rooting against Nebraska when they play the rest of the good old Big 12, Except for October 16th. UT travels to Lincoln and UT is going to get their butts whipped. There might not be partying in the streets of the rest of the Big 12 but I guarantee there will be a lot of VERY happy people in Ames, Manhattan, Lawrence, Stillwater, Norman, Waco, College Station, Lubbock, and even a few in Columbia………….

I would be nice to see the League Office take control of this the B12 -2 and not let one or two schools dictate the key decisions on TV contracts and money distribution. Honestly, I don’t see any good alternative League affiliation options for schools other than UT, OU and ATM and possibly MU. That still leaves 6 or 7 schools (the majority) that could force equity in TV contract money distribution if it came to a vote. I have to believe that a revised B12, minus UT, and possibly with the addition of a TCU or Houston (if OU bolted, too) would make for a better League than any of the alternatives available to them, e.g. Mountain West, Conference USA, WAC, etc.
Tech was once in the former confernce know as the Pac-10 so coming full circle would not be bad. The Big12 is a bad deal. Why wait til it falls apart and everyone is looking for a conference. Find something new now and dump the Big12/Longhorn conference. It is not a good situation and everyone knows Tubs and Hance are right and it is destined for failure. Whether Tech finds another conference or goes Independent and works their own TV deals and reaps all the benefits is a much better situation.
Tech is a hot commodity now and that is the time to sell. Networks are calling and signing Tech up for future games as soon as the previous year ends. This is the time to make the move. What does Tech have to offer? Big TV revenues, and like the Longhorns…we have huge fan basis in Dallas and Houston…two huge TV markets.
Let’s seperate frome the Big12. I think most Raider fans and Alum believe it is best for the University. The Big 12 is going to fall this year or next. Why put off the inevitable. Let’s leave the Lonhorns, A&M and Oklahoma without a conference…not Tech!
Gerald, Kent…pull the plug!!! Tech is not linked at the hip with Texas. Did Tech grow and prosper before Texas? Sure they did! This University can and will survive without them.

I also know a few athletes that competed in the Big12 and Southwest conference and they believe that lack of fund sharing will be the end of the Big12 as well. There are lots of arguments to this. Both sides have good points. If funds are not shared equally then the poorer paid schools can not grow or compete. That is the goal of any University.

There’s no arguing that UT & OU bring more viewers & revenue into the program…what most dunces from other schools don’t get, is the fact A&M is tossed into that mix. A&M DOES NOT bring in more tv viewers, or money into the mix than TT or OSU. That is the fact, & that is the problem. A&M is fast becoming irrelevant as #2…it is there now, only due to size. They can’t stand the fact that TT surpases them in the one game that matters most years, & that their football program & tv viewership is much less than TT brings. In fact, probably won’t be many years until UT requests to play TT at Thanksgiving, cause they’ll bring more people to the stadium than A&M on Thanksgiving. A&M, do you get the fact that UT does NOT consider you their major rivals anymore? It is OU, & it is all about money to UT.
IIluvpirates and Houston Red Raiders have made some excellent points concerning the conference. Really Texas A&M is not a factor any more in football. A&M does have an excellent track program, but so does Tech. Tech will be at the championship level in track very soon. Baseball and basketball will be at a high level soon. I agree that the UT alum and OU crowd aren’t really proud of what has happened in regards to funding. OSU would seem to hold a wild card due to Mr. Pickens money. They have a beautiful stadium as does Tech now with the upgrades. K State is going to be a power in football again soon with coach Snyder. K-STATE have excellent basketball and baseball programs as well.

Please answer honestly (again we are talking right now). Obviously the results over the last 10 years have meant very little during the Big 12 minus two formation (Aggies get 20 million compared to TTU’s 14 million).
You are a typical TTU fan.
I notice there is never a response for “TTU is an easy school”. Everyone knows TTU is an easy party school.
If the last 10 years meant so much why did TTU fire Leach ?
TTU basketball is bad.
TTU baseball is bad.
TTU football is great (even though Aggies scored over 50 at Jones last season by running)
TTU track is average

Apparently neither can A&M. If they were able to do so they should have. Tech has admitted from day one that they had to go where ever UT went. As for the comment you keep regurgitating to everyone on here…”Tech is easy to get into”…yea…so what is your point? You still have to go to class, study and pass. Howdy Free Whellin Aggie: After we beat yall 65-0 this season, we are goin to take that collie dawg and shear him with a nice hair cut to match the cadets down there at ole kyle field in junior college station. WRECK EM TECH!

The only thing I was upset about was that after a&m’s “super bowl” against the Raiders, we quit playing and finished the season with a losing record, 6-7. Oh well, maybe next year! At least you Raiders know how to finish a season and win bowl games. I wish the aggies could do that!

Yessir, it will SOON be time for Tech to leave the TU 10/12! If indeed Academics do matter, a move to the Pac 10 would have possibly expedited the attainment of Tier-one. I have read accounts of the influence TU had/has played in the fact that Dan Beebe has not been MUCH MORE inclined in developing a Big 12 Conference TV Network of it’s own [r.e. the Big 10]. If that is simply true, we Texans prove to the World just how archaic we are. And how provincial in our thinking we must confess to being! I, for one, am very proud of the strides Texas Tech University continues to make regarding Academics. NOW……..it may make sense for Texas Tech to plow new ground from an Athletics standpoint. you two QB’s are resting and possibly puzzled, after with no more air raider, they are probably expecting a beating. either that or they are out shoveling water and mud to raise money for the new gold image of the stooges.

Hey Buffs, give us a break! We put all of our efforts into the Tech game and forgot about the rest of the season! Our game against the Raiders is always our “super bowl”. But this year we are going to finish with a winning record you can be sure of that!

Leach to Vanderbilt? From SI.com:
“Speculation commenced immediately Wednesday, with reporters and bloggers tossing around high-profile names like ex-Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer and ex-Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, both of whom will be actively looking to reenter the field. The truth is, there’s no predicting whom the school might consider, and pedigree might not be as important as personality.”

From looking at the Shorthorns the schedule- UT will lose to Nebraska, Tech, and OU. probably will be in Cotton Bowl

Kountry, hopefully they won’t make it to the Cotton. I was thinking more along the lines of the Toilet Bowl.

Why do you guys hate UT so much? Are u jealous that we have the premier football program in the country? If so, then u have what is known as “Penis Envy”, no offense.
I don’t hate UT at all, I respect what they have doneThey always are good. This next year Nebraska, Tech, and OU will be better than UT. I wouldn’t say that UT is the premier program in the country. You have to include Florida, USC, Oklahoma, LSU, Alabama as a premier group. UT usually is in the mix. Not this season though. UT won’t be the same without Colt.
Mr. Mart, I respectfully disagree that UT won’t be the same without Colt. Our new QB is quickly coming along. Some horn fans are saying he may end up being more talented than McCoy. And for Texas fans to say that, it says a lot. Anyway, thanks for saying that Texas is one of the best football programs in the country.

true fan: One thing to think about:( Common Sense) This is a Texas Tech site: You must expect that Red Raider fans will
take jabs at opposing teams just as Long Horn fans wouldtake jabs if OU, Tech, A&M etc posted on a Longhorn site. You will get a lot more respect here than you would on a Sooner web site.
