Tech moves football opener to a Sunday

Texas Tech and SMU have moved their football season opener to Sept. 5, a Sunday, to accommodate a national telecast by ESPN and ESPN360.com. The kickoff will be at 2:30 p.m. at Jones AT&T Stadium.

The game originally was scheduled for Sept. 4.

“This move gives our program national exposure early in the season,” Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said in a statement released by the athletic department. “It also gives us the opportunity to kick off coach (Tommy) Tuberville’s era in front of a national audience.”

So far, Tech has two games set for a national telecast: the SMU game and the Sept. 18 home game against Texas, which will be a 7 p.m. kickoff on ABC or ESPN.

Well, I have listened to all this bull for weeks about Coach Leach and the Pirates crew until I am sick. I graduated fromTexas Tech as a Red Raider, so did my wife, daughter, and mother in law. We are Red Raiders, not Pirates. Please take your pirate act to Key West and join on his band wagon there. See how much he really thought of Lubbock and Texas Tech. In regard to his treatment of a football player, I would not have been talking about in the media. I would have been in Lubbock and opened up a big case of whoop a– on the coach if that had been my son that was treated like that. Seems that no other player in his 10 year career had been subjected to this type of care. We now have a coach that I can be proud of as he is a gentleman, knows what a head coach is suppose to do and will be very good for Texas Tech. I will not have to explain our different coach to my friends at Tu or TAMU. He was a total embarrassment to our university even though he won some football games. We will now have a chance to win big time with some one that knows that defense wins football games. Leach’s defense was to out score them never attempting to stop them. Go Red Raiders!

the TRUE FANS of the university should be appalled at the lack of transparency of a public university. This is not Gerald Myers U or Kent Hance U or Guy Bailey U just as much as it was not Mike Leach U……..IT IS TEXAS TECH U, and as little as you like it, people who paid good money to attend classes at Texas Tech U are pissed at the current situation. I DO support Tuberville, et al and I DO believe in the direction of the FOOTBALL program although I vehemently disagree with the disjointed path it is taking to get here. The Athletic Department has gone into the crapper with Gerald Myers at the helm. That is a fact. Other than the football and track programs, we have mediocrity at best! Thanks to who? GM- the AD!!!! the only reason facilities have improved for any sport in the last 5 years have been due to the overwhelming support for MIKE LEACH and his football program. Now GM make take credit for that but it is not his doing. I agree that Leach misstepped in the past couple of years due to Ego, but that was a creation of the seperation of his program and the AD office. You have to realize that the beast bringing in the profits must be acknowledged. and GM refused to do so, moreover he despised Leach and the football program. Goes to show you can’t have an unsuccessful basketball coach run you r sthletic department. He just doesnt get it and never will. I will contribute any amount necessary to see his retirement begin immediately. AND I DO SUPPORT THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM, AND I DO SUPPORT MIKE LEACH AND HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS, AND I DO SUPPORT HIM GETTING AS MUCH MONEY AS HE CAN BECAUSE IT WILL BE A TESTAMENT TO MYERS’ ABSOLUTE CRAP HANDLING OF THIS SITUATION ALONG WITH HANCE, BAILEY, ETC. but first and foremost I hope TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL WINS!!! and CONTINUES TO GRADUATE ITS PLAYERS, because that is the most underrated thing Mike LEach did, was lead the Big 12 in graduation rates. And Don Williams is an incompetant fool who should be on the rails out of town with Myers. all he has done is cater to the powers that be instead of his so-called journalistic duty. Maybe he can call Dr. Dean in the Mass Comm department so he can ask what a journalist really is supposed to try and accomplish because her sure as heII hasn’t figured it out.

High Rider, you should do some investigative reporting about Spaeth Communications out of Dallas and see Craig James involvement with them before you go running your mouth and talking about Leach being nothing but an emberrassment. His built your school facilities, brought acclaim, recognition, publicity, and credibility. Sadly, for an academic institution, this is how it works these days, first through athletics. For those of you who do not realize that then you are just the same as the uneducated and unimformed that create this sport-first mentaility in America. Oh, the irony. NOW FIRE GERALD MYERS. Yeah, the move should help bring in some revenue for this game eventhough the stadium will be half full. We will need everything we can get early since after they lose the opener to SMU, then lose several more throughout the season, the half-full stadium that Coach Leach built will get even more empty.

I am sure the ESPN broadcast will be hard to stomach. Dozens of close-ups of Adam James. Statements of how courageous and righteous he and Craig James are. Inaccurate descriptions of what transpired and excuses. I hope ESPN has a camera inside the locker room at halftime so we can get some shots of Tubbyville blowing a gasket and cussing out the players when they are down 21 at halftime.

Mike Leach will not get a lot of money. He will not get a top tier job. He’s not that good of a coach. He can’t win championships. He wasn’t offered the job at U of Washington after they finished last in the Pac-10 with 1 win! He wasn’t offered the job at Miami after they finished 8th in the ACC. He wasn’t offered the job at Tennessee, a guy with a below .500 record was. Ya’ll are so blind. He wasn’t even interviewed for East Carolina, or USF. Mike Leach is a person that doesn’t get what a real coach is supposed to do. He was out for himself. Coaches are supposed to do what Coach Tubs is doing. All of you ignorant fans are saying, “wow, he’s really out promoting himself.” No, he’s promoting the school. He was hired before Lane Kiffin and Dooley at Tennessee and they have both done more public appearances than Tubs. It’s what a coach does. It’s something our “genius” never did. He didn’t care about the University. He didn’t care about defense. and he didn’t care about his players. Don’t believe me. Go ask any of his defensive players if he knew their name. He didn’t. He didn’t pay attention to the defense. And this isn’t speculation, it’s what actually happened. And don’t praise Leach for graduation rates. One, he didn’t have a curfew, two, he cut out mandatory study hall. He had good assistants that helped. Plus, look how many other teams (OU, aTm, UT) have players leave before their senior year and not graduate. I’m just glad in 2010 most of you will finally see what a real program is supposed to look like. A good coach, dress code, curfews, respect, character.

I’m ashamed that some of my fellow alumni are this ignorant and blinded by the whole situation. I would be upset about Leach too…… if he actually won a championship, or did something to promote my school other than give us a quirky offense.

Never said he will get a top tier job. He wont. not after this. and He wasnt interviewed for ECU or USF because of the situation. he cut out mandatory study hall but made a starter sit at a desk at the 50 during practice fro not going to class. and the facts are he did graduate the best in the Big 12. Not just against OU and UT. He graduated in the top 10 in the country as a matter of fact. look it up Mr. Ignorant. I guess you missed that part of MBA education that says in order to be successful you must have good support aka assistants. SO i guess your are going to hold that against him too? The man was good for the school, period. We have an opportunity to improve upon that for some of the reasons that you stated, but Leach set a precedent. By Winning. TRIVIA FOR YOU MR. IGNORANT, what Big 12 school has made a bowl game in all years of existence of the conference? Who has had a losing season more recently, Tech or UT? You can make all the speeches you want but if you don’t put the football in the end zone no one gives a damn.

I’m glad I’ll be able to watch the game being that I know I won’t be able to travel to see it in person. I don’t know how long I’d be able to hold off without seeing my team play.

Does anyone else find it funny that literally no other people from other Big 12 programs see the need to come to our board and talk about how great they are? I really do feel sorry for the UT “fans” that are so pathetic and lonely that they have to go to other schools boards to get attention. I say we stop acknowledging their presence and eventually they’ll move on and become fans of another winning team.

For the record, I live in Austin and I’ve noticed a significant increase in the number of Alabama fans lately. Speaks volumes about the UT “fan base” in my opinion.

Based on the fact that Craig James works for them, I don’t believe they should have made ANY comment at all during the Alamo Bowl, but they just couldn’t help themselves. Just like mainstream media anymore, there is no objective reporting at ESPN. I do care about truth and justice but I also realize that those will sort themselves out eventually and the outcome will have nothing to do with anything said on these boards. I am still, and will always be, a Red Raider no matter who the coach is or who the administration is. It would be dumb on the grandest scale for Tech fans to self impose a death penalty by refusing to support the program. Withdrawing support will not undo what’s been done. Withdrawing support will not prevent this from happening again. The only thing that withdrawing support will accomplish is to hurt Texas Tech. Even if you could arrange for Myers and company to be gone, they would only be replaced with another set of men who would make the same decisions and be equally influenced by Big Money.

People are mad because this is a prime example of an average joe getting screwed in favor of some rich elitist. France had a revolution over such a thing.

Mike Leach was liked by his fans because he did not come across as a snob. He wore what average people wore, he talked like average people talked, and he brought positive recognition to the school that had not previously been brought by coaches in the past.

Then, the school sided with the polar opposite of Coach Leach and threw him out like garbage. Craig James and Adam James represent the rich, privileged, better than you people who think they can get what they want because they have money and fame. And you people who side with them are no better than they are. Maybe one day you will see. You won’t get promoted because some brown-noser got the job. Your son will take the fall for some mischief that occurred because his rich “friend” ratted him out. Some rich kid may have his way with your daughter and use his money and influence to get away with it. I could go on.

Craig James used his money and influence to get Mike Leach fired. Coach Leach is gone, yes. Does that make what happened right, no. Should I continue to root for the Red Raiders, probably; but everytime I see or hear about them I remember how my school sided with that smirking piece of crap Craig James. Report this comment

  • Rob R

Wow, t-boneLXA. That last comment was absolutely ridiculous. First of all, the very notion that he talked like any average, normal person is dumb. He didn’t. He spoke in his own language, in some sort of stream of consciousness manner, which is not normal unless you’re a comedian or William Faulkner.

The very things you mentioned as being “good” about Leach are the very things that made him so unlike other SUCCESSFUL coaches. He’s not a normal person. He’s a football coach. He didn’t dress like a normal football coach, he didn’t act like a normal football coach, and he was not perceived as a normal football coach by anyone that is not from Lubbock.

And don’t fool yourselves into thinking that Leach didn’t have an ego. He has as big of an ego as anyone I’ve ever seen. If he really was an “average person,” then there’s no way he would have reacted the way he did to these allegations. If he didn’t think he was untouchable, he wouldn’t cuss out his boss Hance, who was the only one trying to help him at the time. After EVERY loss, Leach never took any blame himself. The videos that recently surfaced, (which I didn’t think were very bad, jus for the record, even though I don’t support Leach anymore) prove that. The Houston loss last year was squarely on the shoulders of Mike Leach. He kicks the field goal, we assure ourselves of overtime. He didn’t. We didn’t score, we lost. Who did he blame? Not his bad decision. He blamed his players for “thinking they were too good to play Houston.” Against Texas, where his team (playing with 3 healthy defensive linemen) gave everything they could against a much better team, he accused them of letting their egos grow because they kept it close. What I heard from all the players was that there were some good things they could take from it, but that they still lost. Leach’s ego was so big, in fact, that he thought he was not only bigger than the football program, but bigger than the University. False.

Leach is gone. Myers will be gone soon enough. There is no reason for Kent Hance to be fired. Football, and even athletics as a whole, are not the measure of a university.

Another funny thing is that last year, if we would have moved a game to the next day for national TV, you people would’ve said how smart Leach was to do that because it was bringing recognition. Now it’s just more reason to fire Gerald Myers because he only cares about money? HELLO!!!!! THAT’S WHAT IT’S ABOUT IN COLLEGE ATHLETICS!!! Hell..even in life. Leach is suing for what? MONEY! Not to rebuild his reputation..to get money.

Listen to yourselves. “I hope we lose to SMU.” Well..then show up in red and blue and cheer for them, stop calling yourselves Red Raider fans, and by all means, if all you want to do is spew your hatred of the school on here…there’s a Facebook page and I’m sure a website with a Team Leach message board. Go there.

I can’t wait for September 5. Wreck ‘em.

Norm…Bob Knight was suspended for a game for the incident with Smith. You know what he did? He accepted it, served the suspension, and went on about his life because he actually cared about his players and his school. Yes, Knight was insubordinate. But he knew what he did was wrong, and even if he didn’t, he was intelligent enough to shut his mouth and agree with his boss anyways.

Leach was suspended for one game (the Alamo Bowl). Sound familiar? He chose to ignore it, fly to San Antonio anyways, then cuss out his bosses. That shows a complete disregard for the welfare of his players, and a complete lack of care for the school he claimed to love every year when he was busy shopping himself around for other jobs.

Comparing the Bob Knight “insubordination” to the Leach “insubordination” is pointless. Knight handled it like a professional. Leach handled it like an egotistical maniac who thinks he deserves special treatment because he makes witty comments instead of winning championships.

I’m sorry Rob, but I can’t get this image out of my head of a boa constrictor swallowing its prey head first and saying “don’t worry I’m only giving you mouth to mouth resuscitation”. I don’t think Kent Hance was ever trying to help Mike Leach.

You go on to say that no reasons exists to fire Hance. That statement got me to looking at the Chancellor’s job descritption and this may surprise you but I found a few reasons to consider. It seems that the Chancellor should be held to the “highest degree” standard for ethical conduct of any of the employees at the university. The Chancellor is expected to follow the procedure manual, which establishes best practices. The Board of Regents will evaluate the Chancellor on an annual basis to determine how well these standards have been met.

Well in the Leach case, the Chancellor didn’t come close to following the procedures outlined in the manual. As for ethical conduct—the Sowell letters tell a sad story there.

Will the Board of Regents do a complete and true evaluation of the Chancellor? Duty calls for this to be done, but what do the rest of you think? Will they do their job?

Do you know Who the head coach is for Auburn, Iowa St, DC for Texas coach in waiting. That’s all of the start as DC for Tommy at Auburn. He made them who the are now with his “D”. As for his 4-7 last year, do some research again. Tommy wanted at Tech style Offense instead of run style, he could not rebuild an offense in one season and some boosters ran him off.

Tommy came to Tech because we have the offense he wanted, but was not allowed to have at Auburn. He is right, with Leech’s Offense and his “D”. Tech will be a power house and he believes it whole heartedly.

I understand you loved Mike and didn’t care about Tech before him. I was Raider before Leech and I’ll be a Raider after Tommy. 10 years is a long time.

By the way what makes you think Leech was staying anyway. Every Year for the last 10 yrs at Tech he’s been looking for another job somewhere else. We had a coach who didn’t love the school we was coaching at. I say, Ha!! we screwed you first.

    Rob R,

Arrogance will keep you in the common company of those you seem to support as will your rudeness and name calling.

Most people know Chancellor Hance is a lawyer and that he specializes in administrative law. That is why some of us who have read the “book” are puzzled about the procedural errors that have been made in this case. Procedures established over time create best practices that when followed assure fairness, integrity, and keep the university out of litigation. That didn’t happen here, did it.

If a trial comes to pass, it likely won’t serve anyone well, which is something we seem to both agree on. You must know now that I’m not a member of “team leach”. I respect the 60,000 members and their sincere interest to get to the truth which is why they want this case to go to trial. However, all I see coming from a prolonged legal battle is a split base and a divided university for a long, long time. Truth doesn’t come easily and a trial doesn’t guarantee that you will ever learn the truth.

I know Chancellor Hance cares deeply about TTU and its future. That actually goes without saying. In the best interest of Tech though, he should consider making his resignation part of the settlement arrangements. This may be the only thing that can move us forward and out of this sad state of affairs we are in.

Leach didn’t want another job he just wanted the fans to jump on myers and bailey for not wanting to pay him what was rightfully his and that was the third best salary in the big12 just like his record!!! i know you probably want spyke dykes back and think myers is great and honest but team leach has 50,000 fans that beg to differ and that would be about what the jones holds right?? i guess if you had your way tech games would be played in your backyard and you can invite ur four or five SMART friends and not have to listen to 50,000 fans that liked mike leach and his team!!
