Griner disciplined, apologizes for throwing punch
Baylor freshman center Brittney Griner was subject to an NCAA mandated one-game suspension for punching
Texas Tech forward Jordan Barncastle in Wednesday’s game at United Spirit Arena.
That suspension will be served Sunday, when Baylor is scheduled to play Texas in Waco.
Baylor coach Kim Mulkey has added an additional game to Griner’s suspension, which will be served during Baylor’s first game of the Big 12 Tournament on either March 11 or 12.
Win or lose in the Big 12 Tournament, Baylor is a lock for the NCAA tournament, so Griner will be back with the team in time to compete for a national title.
“I am very disappointed in the incident which happened during our basketball game last night at Texas Tech,” Mulkey said in a statement released by the Baylor athletics department on Thursday. “There is no place for those types of actions in sports. I do not condone that type of behavior in my program and have dealt with it accordingly.
“I don’t believe this incident should define Brittney Griner — either as a person or as a player,” she added.
“Anyone who has been around her knows that she’s a great kid. Her actions last night were very uncharacteristic of her. Unfortunately, she let her emotions get the best of her, and that can’t happen. Brittney is a special young lady, she is great for our game, and I believe she will learn from this mistake and will become a better person moving forward.”
Big 12 Conference Commissioner Dan Beebe has accepted Baylor’s action of suspending Griner for the opening game of the Big 12 Championship, according to a release from the conference.
Beebe commended Mulkey and Baylor athletics director Ian McCaw “for taking a strong stance to support good sportsmanship.”
The Big 12 also issued a public reprimand to both Texas Tech and Baylor for failure to comply with the rule that restricts anyone but the head coach from leaving the bench area to prevent a situation from escalating.
Griner apologized for her actions in a release from the Baylor athletics department.
“I’d like to apologize to Jordan for my actions during last night’s game,” Griner said. “I also owe an apology to the Lady Raider team, my teammates and coaches, the fans and the game of women’s basketball. I let my emotions get the best of me and I am deeply sorry for my actions. I am committed to doing a better job of maintaining my composure in the future. I will grow from this and I am dedicated to setting an example to others of how to learn from personal mistakes.”

Are you kidding? LaGarrett Blount from Oregon got suspended for an entire season for decking a Boise State player in Football. (Where we expect and, to a certain extent respect, violence.) And that punch did no damage to the player.
Griner should be suspended for the rest of the season (and maybe more) and it says a great deal about Baylor that they only suspend her for one game (via the NCAA) and a first round throw away game in the Big 12 Tournament (via Baylor.)
What happened to principles when it comes to athletes? (ESPECIALLY AT A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL LIKE BAYLOR!)

Barncastle had it coming. I hope she learned her lesson. You want to play rough, then be prepeared to get your ass beat.

Eric,
You are kidding right? Your comment deserves a sucker punch. She wasn’t even looking. What if that punch had killed her I guess that’s ok in your mind. Go back to Baylor, “WE CAN’T DANCE OR DRINK, BUT WE’LL FIGHT CHEAP AND SUCKER PUNCH ANYONE”

The Tech chick should have been punished too. She grabbed the Baylor’s girls arm and twirled her around before anything happened. I consider the Baylor girl defending herself despite poor referring like happened with Elizabeth Lambert of UNM in the soccer game earlier.

Beard, you think “the Tech chick should have been punished too” … because she first “grabbed the Baylor girl’s arm and twirled her around”
OK fine. But the punishment should match up with the punishment received by the Baylor player for breaking Barncastle’s nose … which was a suspension of 1 whole game.
Guess Barncastle should have to sit out … what … 2 minutes of Tech’s next game?
… you call taking a swing and breaking another player’s nose … self defense?

Where were the police? She would have been arrested for assault at the local 7-11.

Basketball players don’t commit assaults – that’s against the law.
They just learn from their mistakes without benefit of abiding by any LAWS.

This already has defined Bratney Griner’s career. She will never live this down and every game she plays someone will be screaming this incident back in her ear.
Remember: “Throw the chair, Bobby?”
Recruits: If you want to play for this kind of team. Baylor is the place for you.

Dear Jim Beard…. are you a band director?
Not that there’s anything wrong with that…. but you just don’t seem to understand good sportsmanship, or the game itself.
What would happen if Shaq punched every player who intentionally fouled him at the end of each game?
You HAVE heard of Hack-A-Shaq…… right? They get a foul called and he gets free throws.
If Griner had not punched her…. I’ll bet there was a called foul coming… maybe even a Technical on Barncastle.
Griner would have gotten her foul shots…. and the ball. It’s in the rule book. THAT’S THE PUNISHMENT.
There is no place in sports for punching another player out of frustration.
PS…. don’t take your kids to a Tech football game… lot’s of violence there. (but no punches)

Though I did not see the game I too agree Griner should have gotten much more discipline than even two games!! I seem to be seeing though a different kind of “girl” being recruited to the nations top basketball teams of our day – like at Baylor, OU, Tennessee. Are they rough inner-city types that having something to prove in college? Or is it the “rough and tough’ coaches they have that dont accept anything less than your very best effort on the court. Dunna know….. interesting. I hope their game is not actually going that direction, but then again I think it is. It is a tougher game these days and I know we are behind on that curve right now. So when do we get “those” leaders and when do we get “those” players and when do we start getting more WINS. Oh, wait! I forgot – it’s not supposed to be about just WINS in college is it? Course when Marsha was on top (an she was a pretty tough girl!) we had consistent sell-outs and now we got what? Maybe only a third of the normal attendance we used to have. So when do the WINS come back? We got great facilities, etc etc etc. Go recruit the hell out of Texas and the Southwest. Bring em in here and coach em up to the Big 12. Maybe send em to one of those mixed martial arts summer camps. Maybe thats what Baylor, OU, and Tennessee is doing. Dunno… But they win and we dont…….
Focus – dig deeper – play some ball!!

how about the NCAA makes the Baylor girl pay for all her medical bills? i mean it is a christian university right? shouldn’t she turn the other cheek…cause that’s the message the NCAA is telling this girl. oh its OK to cold cock someone that’s not looking, you are talented and make us money so its only a two game suspension…..RIDICULOUS!

Once upon a time in the west………. we had a champ group of girls with blonde pony tails and brown buffy-ear hair dos. All American small town farm girls that were pretty darn good athletes. But some wheres along the way their game started changing as Mr Lite above alluded to. Now these former players etc have kids of there own. They left the farms and became city maniacs like the rest of us! They drive their kids in a relentless pursuit of perfection to be as Michael Jordan or Charles Barkley. They aint got female heros – they go for the gangsters of the game that make the headlines and the wacky sports show. Besides so many of em dont even have a daddy at home now days … so they spend alot of time in the gyms and learn they can take out alot of lifes frustrations on the court. And guess what ? While the farm girls are playing for their State chanmpionships in softball and soccer (while their not at the malls getting their nails done) todays basketball girls ARE learning to kick-behind in the Y’s , in the AAU leagues (or whatever it is called), and in the top hi school basketball districts eventually. The farm girls are now up in the stands with their fat little boy friends just maybe wishing they had continued basketball but mommie and even daddy took em away from the game cause it was a little too rough. It dont cost much money for big-city girls to play basketball – not like it does soccer anyway. And there the girls efforts are rewarded and they can find acceptance and recognition for just who they are. And who are they? Just girls trying to get by and get into a good college somewhere to get the same opportunities in life as the ole farm girls with buffy-ears.
Its a new day people. You better learn to keep up or just shut up and keep bein a loser…

I asked the Baylor peole if this would have happened to B Griner would they be happy with a two game suspension. I bet they would not be happy if your player only recieved two games. I support another team in the Big 12 and I was at the games when we played Baylor and Texas Tech and Griner was by far the rougher player. She only had two fouls called on her but if the ref’s would have called the game the way against her as they were against our center she would have fouled out half way through the second half. She should have to sit out the last agme plus the Big 12 tourney then she can come back for the NCAA. In this case Tech is right and Baylor is wrong.

Now that Griner has thrown a punch and broken the nose of a player the Big 12 officials should have her marked for any infraction of the rules. She should be watched more so than others. If they let rough play escalate from Griner after this then it is the Big 12 officiating crews that should be punished.
Yes the other teams will come after her to rile her up, but that is the consequences for throwning a punch. That is not part of the game. Then other players that she guards and guards her have not punched anyone.
Mark her play and fouls until she proves to the Big 12 and other players (other teams) that she can handle college play.

To those of you who did not see the game.
Barnecastle did get a foul called against her after swinging Griner around.
But it was Griner who had interlocked their arms.
Barncastle was breaking free from the tangled arms.
Barnecastle was walking over to get into position for the Baylor team to shoot their free-throws and that is when Griner did the blind-sided sucker punch to Barncastle’s nose.
The punishment should be more than two games.
I understand that the Oregon football player (LaGarrett Blount) got a more severe punishment because he continued his escapade with screaming and charging at the fans and continued to be uncontrollable for about twenty minutes in the locker room.
Griner will continue to be punished because the refs will most likely call her on fouls that might not be called against the other players because she has set a precedent for being an angry and physical player.
I agree with Lisa’s comments.
Barncastle and the other Lady Red Raiders need to stay strong and level-headed.
Go Tech !!!

GERALD…………………Where are you. Take a stand for our players………………….Appeal to the Big 12 and do not accept the reprimand that TECH recieved. Griner is at fault………..PERIOD.
CURRY…………….Stand up for our players………….Sometimes it takes a LEADER to lead and don’t be afraid to get in trouble with the Big 12 powers that be…………….
Remember when Leach called out the officials when playing UT a few years ago……………he got fined but you know what………………..WE started to get some calls and TECH played as a TEAM……………..
This is your time to make a stand…Curry…don’t wait for Gerald…………..BE THE ONE that gets our LADY RAIDERS TO BELIEVE IN YOU and a TEAM will emerge.

I am a high school teacher.
These university freshman girls playing basketball for the university are just a few months out of high school where fighting is punished by in school suspension. The 18 year olds do not understand the adult consequences of their inappropriate behavior. Their brains will not fully develop until they are 21 years old. To the adults I say, “Give them a break”. Had they had more experience before they were put into the Big 12 arena they would have been able to use some self control over their emotions. They both behaved inappropriately. They both regret that they have ruined their careers for the remainder of their lives. This is comparable to making a basket on the wrong end of the court and will result in disgrace and shame for them the remainder of their lives. They will never be able to live this down. God forgives sins. Humans need to forgive two 18 year olds for one crazy mistake they both wish had never happened. Give them both a break. The lesson learned here is for coaches to anticipate when two players are in trouble and put them on the bench until they cool off. Both coaches need to review their proceedures. Ms. Hughes
