Tuberville talks about winning championships at Tech
PlainsCapital Bank vice chairman David Seim says he has an April event to put on his calendar for the first time – the Texas Tech spring football game.
While many Tech fans were angered by the December firing of Mike Leach, others are warming up to his replacement. Speaking Tuesday to a crowd of about 700, Tommy Tuberville got hearty applause when he vowed to win multiple championships for the Red Raiders.
“I think it speaks volumes that the place was sold out,” Seim said of Tuberville’s “Lubbock Welcome” sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, Tech Alumni Association and the Red Raider Club. “I think people are kind of over the transition that we went through back in December and early January and have accepted and recognized the fact that we’ve got in coach Tuberville a coach that is in the elite status of college coaches in America.
“I told my wife, I’m going to actually go to the spring game, and I’ve never done that.”
Tuberville told the luncheon crowd at the Memorial Civic Center that he didn’t come to Lubbock to win six or seven games a season.
“We know how to win championships,” he said. “You can just imagine here the excitement when we do win … because we’re going to win a championship. We’re going to win maybe two, maybe three, maybe four. It just depends on what the good Lord wants us to have.”
Tuberville devoted much of his talk to what the community could do for the football program and vice versa.
“Whatever happens over in that stadium on Saturday will benefit you, the businesses of this town, the people of this community,” he said. “It will bring people here. Millions of dollars will be brought into this community because of the success.”
Tuberville, who was part of three national championship teams in eight years as a University of Miami assistant, said that school received enrollment boosts of 15 to 18 percent after each title. He said, then, that Tech football would do its part to help achieve Chancellor Kent Hance’s long-term goal of 40,000 enrollment.
In return, Tuberville said the team needed to see Red Raider banners in the community and bumper stickers on cars.
“You will be amazed how that helps when we bring recruits to this community, to see the excitement not just in the football program, not just in the field house, not just around campus, but in the community,” he said. “You will prosper from this.”
Seim said he thinks the business community is excited by Tuberville’s presence.
“I think the entire university is going to benefit greatly,” he said, “and as the university benefits the entire area will benefit.”
Steve Uryasz, head of the Red Raider Club, said the RRC has received hundreds of requests for Tuberville to speak across the state, too many for him to do them all. Uryasz said he’s looking to see where coordinators and assistants could be used to help out in speaking engagements.
In cases such as Tuesday, he said the Red Raider Club is making an effort to combine requests into one bigger event when it makes sense.
“He’s done a really good job of pulling everybody together,” Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said. “I think people like what he has to say about his plan, about what he’s going to do with the team. I think people appreciate his being accessible to go out and visit and talk to different groups, civic clubs, alumni. I think he’s been received really well.”
On other topics:
• Tuberville said he spent about three hours recently talking with former Red Raiders coach Spike Dykes, whom he described as a long-time friend. Though the purpose was not to pick up dinner-speaking tips, Tuberville tickled the crowd a few times, a quality for which Dykes was renowned.
Joking about the unseasonably cold, wet winter he’s experienced in Lubbock, Tuberville cracked, “At least the wind never blows here.”
He said Tech athletic chief of staff Craig Wells “told me, next week (the weather) is going to start getting beautiful. That was three weeks ago.”
• Tech is in the process of adding display and trophy cases to the team’s football building.
“We already had that funded – and built – before he came,” Myers said. “But they’re just now putting them in. It’s going to be nice to showcase the football history. It’s like he said: It’s all about recruiting.”
• Tuberville urged fans to show up on April 17 for the spring game, an event that Leach often downplayed as no more important to him than any other practice. Tech plans to charge $5 for adults to attend this year.
• Tuberville wants to rev up the players’ pre-game arrival at the stadium. In recent years, Tech invited fans to greet players as they made the short walk from the Football Training Facility to Jones AT&T Stadium, though the idea didn’t really take off.
Tuberville envisions the players being dropped off a quarter-mile out and passing through the tailgaters or Raider Alley area west of the stadium.
“I’m not here to change a lot of things,” he said. “I’m here to make it better. I’m here to help you. I’m here to help Texas Tech, and I’m here to win a championship.”

From my corner, in the same breath, I can wish and hope the very best for Spike Dykes, MIKE LEACH and Tommy Tuberville! Tommy Tubervelle and many other Americans were, of course, paying attention to Texas Tech Football during all the Mike Leach years in Lubbock. That includes Tommy Tuberville. That alone should generate some excitement in all of us, I think. At least for now, Tommy Tuberville is using the term “Championships”. May he be using that term well into the future! All we long-time Red Raiders deserve that. We all deserve it! nmredraider1

However, I am thinking about flying in for the game this year.

RedRaiderRoger,
Take care the sky is falling. And, basement football? I don’t think the ’09-’10 season has started yet. Tech men’s basketball has had it good moments, but never a podium team. Marsha Sharp was a winner and a very hard act to follow. Did she and The Indiana Flash get fired; I think not.
Tommy is a class act. He is a winner and articulate. He may not rollerblade down 50th Street like Mike or mumble during interviews, and he may trade a bit of offense for some passable defense at Tech. Offense is fun to watch, but defense wins games.

Of all the Name coaches I have ever met the least impressive was Bill Walsh when I had lunch w/ him & others in July of 1981 prior to the season the 49′ers won their first Super Bowl. There wasn’t any hype from him…No promises of anything, which is the polar opposite you will find from most coahces in the pre-season. I n order to win national championships you have to have the players and be able to recruit them, this year wasnt all that great, a lot will depend on this year, how they play during the season and how Tuberville recruits, there wouldnt be a good team and high hopes without the players and Leach and what he and his team accomplished, I dont throw people under the bus, I do appreciate what Leach did, I dont like how it was handled, if they didnt want him, they should have let him go last year instead of extending his contract, simple as that, there are a lot of people upset how this was handled and the basketballteams are doing bad,, you want to build up the university start winning games, not lose them,I dont have a crystal ball and neither do you or Tuberville, I do wish him well, but in order to get respect you have to earn it, anyone can make promises, I will withhold my judgement nd see what the10 season goes. best of luck.prejay..

I agree with some of what Purple Crow has said. And I beleive that is why Tommy wanted the job. He is taking over a team that already has potential. He does not have to build a team, he is taking over a good program with most of the pieces in place. With a few adjustments I beleive he knows he can win and win big.
In his words Mike’s/Tech’s offense and his defense will rule the big 12.

Ya’ll are a bunch or debbie downers… I was a huge leach fan.. still like the guy.. but since Tuberville was hired, i’m seeing the difference between a good coach and a great coach.. the difference between a good program and an elite program… Texas Tech will be better off in the long run… Tuberville has done everything right so far, and i have no doubt that it will continue to get better.

Tommy T keeps talking about the 3 national titles won in 8 years when he was @ Miami! He was not the head coach. As a HC he had 1 great year & many so-so to slightly above average years for where he was at. The program @ Auburn has seemed to progress since he left.
I believe in giving him a chance, but these are the facts that some of You seem to not want to take into consideration. I hope he does it, but am taking a wait and see attitude.

Tommy and Leach have the same overall record in 10yrs at each of their last schools. Actually I think Tommy has 3 more wins. He also sent about 80 players into the pro’s during those 10 yrs at AU. Leach sent something like 12 players over 10 yrs. Numbers in the NFL is what kids look at.

Bleeding Red,
Interesting comparison by you stating Leach had about the same record at Tech as Tuberville had at Auburn. To some that may indicate that you think Leach is a better coach since Auburn is an easier place to recruit & attract NFL type players.
The former Iowa State coach who had trouble winning in the Big 12 appears to be doing a better job at Auburn then Tuberville did.
Having said that, I am excited about TT and will give him a chance!

Tommy Tuberville is kinda like the new trophy wife that dad brought home to the family to replace your mom. Mom wasn’t real pretty but she fed you good and raised you best she could. She’s polite and smiles a lot. Gonna take some getting used to but she could piss you off real easy if she says or does the wrong thing.
I think it will take up to that first conference game to see if he is accepted. Early wins will be expected with not much credit given. How will we fare against the big boys is the test. We have to at least be competitive or the whole things gonna come crashing down.

In the end, the most successful programs have a demanding Fan & Supporter Base. Those who expect more from the coaches & programs usually end up with more!

Hey Becky T:
Don’t worry – I am not the least bit concerned with what you’re doing let alone telling ya what to do. The way I see it, there are a couple of different methods that a coach can take when attempting to ‘sell’ a program like Tech’s:
Mike Leach sold our program through success on the field that was a product of the hard work, focus, and repetition in practice. Tommy Tuberville is selling the program with offseason appearances and rallying speeches at donor luncheons and banquets.
I like the idea of football coaches focusing on coaching football rather than Tweeting, Facebooking, or the like… Plus I’ll admit that it really annoys me that our new Offensive Coordinator who just got the job upgrade of a lifetime coming from Troy to Tech somehow finds all this time to put up useless banter on Twitter, yet can’t seem to find time to upload a new profile pic with maybe some Tech gear on perhaps? I’m getting really tired of looking at his goofy cocky young ass in that Troy outfit. Is he really that proud and arrogant? Even the player standing behind him in his pic is looking at him like “what the hell are you talking about you douchebag?”

I detect a great deal of concern in that statement. Tech is going to be a Defensive Powerhouse within the next couple of years. You’ve lost your freaking mind. You’re trying to tell us Mike freaking Leach had Texas Tech’s best interest in mind?!!! What a crock of BS!
-The guy REFUSED to sepak at fundraisers despite his large salary. That is standard for any big time coach.
-He interviewed at other schools yearly, in fact begging for the interviews he got. (i.e. Miami, Washington, UCLA, etc.)
-He NEVER once disputed or shot down these types of rumors.
-He never once won any thing of note. That’s right his biggest accomplishment on the field was a Holiday Bowl victory. I’m sorry if you can’t get over the Cotton Bowl A** whoopings.
-The guy built his record with an extra game and weak non-conference. His conference record was very similar to Dykes.
-The guy had zero class and embarassed us frequently in the media.
-He paid no attention to penalties, defense, or special teams on the field.
-He was way overvalued for what he truly brought to the table.
Kent Hance is a lifelong Red Raider that works his tail off for our school in sooo many different factions (Who do you think is raising money and awareness for out Tier 1 push?!!!). He is the one with TEXAS TECH’s best interest in mind, not MIKE FREAKING LEACH who left his players and staff high and dry. What a joke that guy was. It took me a few years to get on Leach’s bandwagon. My verdict is still out on Tuberville. If he coaches as good as he talks then he should have no problem winning people over. The problem is there are a lot of people that don’t like Tuberville, but they are also infuriated by the fact that people on this side won’t admit the good that Leach did for this program too. He had a good student athlete graduation rate. He brought in a lot of people to watch Tech games because of his quirkiness. People just have to admit he was a good thing for Tech. No one even believes that he will ever be back, but don’t just wipe his name out of the book like he never existed. He was very good for Tech and I will admit to you that Tuberville might be the same, but he has yet to prove it . I remember the years that Tech was at the bottom of the heap. Leach brought them out with his recruiting. People got to where they respected Tech football. I want it to stay that way! Once you taste the sweetness of being a winner, you don’t want to have the bitterness of defeat. No one will blame Tuberville if it turns out bad this will all be on Hance!
I agree Susan that the verdict is still out. In the mean time, you have a decision to make. Will you hop on board and be excited? Or will you go on standby. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with standing by, but IMO that evolves into bashing of Tuberville just because he isn’t anything like Leach. Not saying thats you Susan, I’m just saying that what happens. Also, I think it causes people who have chosen to be excited to look at TL in a negative light.
Yes Becky, but those people seem to be out numbered greatly. I haven’t heard of anyone outside of TL cancelling their season tickets. Everyone I’ve talked to is renewing. We all have one common theme regardless of how we view the Leach situation, we all want the best for Tech, we just want in different way and that in turn causes people to butt heads.

Tuberville would have never taken this job, if Leach had not put Tech on the map.

@Susan: Couldn’t have said it better myself sister ! High five!

Tuberville does have a way of making you feel he’s happy where he’s at.
Just like he said the night before he left the Mississippi program “the only way I’ll leave here is in a pine box”.

I have to believe that if Tuberville gets treated like Leach was treated there would be a Team Tuberville movement too. It is about treatment by Hance, Bailey and Myers, not about whether Leach was a bad coach, or should have left sooner, or should still be here. Tuberville IS the coach and he has a lot to work with thanks to Leach. Now kick the rest of the Big 12′s butt! GO RAIDERS!

Becky T – “… The problem that comes into play is that lots of people (Tech alums and others) don’t want to support (monetarily) an administration that is corrupt. They just don’t want to spend money that is going to be used by the current administration to further their own agenda. It’s as simple as that.”
I do not see how it could be explained any clearer. Good job. I live out of state but try to get back for at least a game or two. I still plan on doing so in 2010. But, I have put my financial commitments to the school in escrow waiting for Hance’s departure. Tech will get it all once he is gone, even if it is 10 years. The administration knows this and the governor’s office has also been informed. To use your words, “They just don’t want to spend money that is going to be used by the current administration to further their own agenda.”

Man all you doom-sayers and negative thinkers can take a hike! I am more of a positive thinker – someone who likes to plan his work and then work his plan until you get it right. So is Coach Tuberville. You have a right to your opinion. But that is like an a##hole – everybody has one and you are really stinkin up the site. So I guess you will get to eat your, uh words, come this fall when you see a very good football team and then an excellent recruiting season followed by an even better football team winning many games. And, yes, don’t let your hearts be troubled when they start winning some championships in the Big 12 – somethin Leach N E V E R seemed to do. Get over it and move on!!!

nOT BASHING TUBERVILLE. on the contrary, wish him the best, just dont like injustice that has been done to Tech and Leach, my opinion, still dont know how this will all play out in court or a settlement, which we havent heard a word in awhile. It very clearly states in this article how many millons are brought in to this community by Tech foootball, wonder how much difference there is between Spikes time andLeachs last few years in millons spent here in Lubbock, attendance was around 30,000 now its around 40,000 big difference wouldnt you say, by bungling the fiasco deal with leach , how many millons have they cost Lubbock and Tech,? people came to see the games because of the offense and the way Leach orchestrated the offense, it was fun, remember now were talking millons of dollars, how much money has the motels, hotels, restraunts, etc.lost the past few years under Knight and Currry? I dont see a lot of people at the games, why. they lose, nobody wants to see a team lose in the meantime Tech and Lubbock loses millons, MILLONS, FOLKS, GET IT? If Tuberville doesnt get good recruits here, guess what they will lose, Leach got the most out of what he had because of the offense he had, can Tuberville do the same? we dont know that, do we? ThIs is not bashing Tuberville, but look at who Texas and AM get and this year,we simply do not get the players that they get, that is a fact. period. Now you have a po fan base and these people are still in charge and Tech is losing milons and Lubock and may lose more because of their incomptency, MILLONS, FOLKS. nOW YOU TELL ME THIS MAKES SENSE BUSINESS WISE? iT DOESNT..? DOES IT?

You stupid people and your Lame Leach Talk. If you idiots are so freaking in lovre with Mike Leach, then freaking move to Key West, FL. and become his dang servant!!!! Im so sick of you Idgits with all of your darn boo hooing and slobber blubberin about your Beloved Mike Leach, and OH TECH WILL FALL IN TO THE SEA WITHOUT MIKE LEACH AT THE HELM! Plllllllaaaaaasssssseeeee!!!!!!!!!
I will tell you al; this much, Tech will make MULTI MILLIONS MORE now than it did with SUPER LEACH. Finally we have a class act of a coach that knows how to show up to his freaking news conferences on time and looking sharp dressed, and not being 30 mins late looking like he just got out of bed with a Major Hangover. SO FREAKING WHAT, Mike Leach had a good offensive system going here, but DAMN PEOPLE! He is not GOD FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
Mike Leach is not the only coach that can have a good offense. If Mike’s offense is so darn hot, why is it that TECH never played for the Big12 Championship. Over the years, Tech has only been mediocre, like last year when he couldn’t even beat just a decent Houston Couger team? Why did he get Totally Embarassed by the total butt whipping he got from A&M? Look at the stupid quirky decision calls like 4th down on Tech’s 30 yd line. That don’t sound like a head coach that it all together there. Maybe he was drunk off his ass on the fiels like he has been before in practice or when he would go out and people would have to carry his butt to the car cause he was slobber-butted drunk.
Every year Leach would be unfaithful and unloyal to Tech anf the fans by goin job hunting at all the coach empty schools only to get turned away because they refused to pay him his rediculous asking price to start out, and why was that? Because all they saw was a total SLOB of a so called Head Coach that was unloyal and sneeking around. Every Year his name would come up in the media on schools possibilities for a new coach and Leach never would be the Loyal Coach and make it known that he was not intrested in any other jobs, like Snot-Nosed Bob Stoops would everytime his name would surface. NO, instead, Mike Leach never would say a word untill he knew for a fact that he didn’t get the job he was seeking, Then he would say, I never was intrested and never talked to anyone there. He screwed himself with the University of Washington cause they called Tech telling them that he was coming to talk to them about their opening at head coach, and they formally asked permision to talk with him about the job. Thats why the contract signing was so hard to get done, because Tech was just so fed up with his sneeking behind their backs and wanted to get rid of him. No one ever knew if Super Mike would leave Tech or stay, Who Knew! Though he had a good offensive scheme going, for which it was good enough that Tech will continue to run it nearly like it has been, I am so thankful that he is gone!
For you real Tech Fans out there, there is a true sigh of relief finally. Mike leach never talked about winning a championship of any kind because he didn’t think he ever could get that far. I was close enough to the goober on several occasions on and off the practice field to have heard enough of the BS he would say. Maybe we on ob this comment page should pre judge people on here like thay are doing coach Tuberville and think that maybe people like Purple Cow is a real to goodness Longhornn fan! Or we all could give him the benefit of the doubt and alow him to prove himself of actually being a Tech fan that has just been Blinded By The Light, and has wound up, Out Of Touch, lol. Well that was a couple of good ole songs, lol.
YOU MIKE LEACH LOVIN DOUBTERS take notice, you all will see how ridiculous you all are when Tech starts KICKING BUTT AND TAKING NAMES in the BIG12, starting next year. And If they don’t, then have at it and have your hay-day on here and say I TOLD YA SO! You’re bat sh** crazy if you’re trying to compare Leach’s loyalty (to Texas Tech) to Kent Hance’s loyalty. The guy took a freaking pay cut to come to the school that he loves. He works his tail off everyday for the university in thousands of different factions. We’re the ones being spoon fed the BS? Is that correct? I’d say Mike Leach is a hell of a lot more publicized in the media than the man behind the scenes, Kent Hance.
I can’t speak intelligently on the nuclear waste dump subject but I can say without a doubt that Kent Hance always has West Texas and Texas Tech’s best interest in mind. The guy is a West Texas native and a Texas Tech alumni and yet you’re trying to tell me he’s trying to screw the two over. Please tell me, outside of some nutty environmentalists reports, what you really know about nuclear waste and the reasoning behind why Hance MIGHT be supporting this. Either way I’m not trying to stray the focus here.
If you want to cry for an arrogant multi-millionaire coach that never gave two SH**S about Texas Tech or West Texas then have at it. I’ll support the guy from that was born there, went to Texas Tech and quit a higher paying job to go back and serve the university. You can continue to believe your CONSPIRACY THEORY BS and I’ll continue to trust those that go to work to improve Texas Tech everyday.
P.S. Please defend Mike Leach’s refusal to speak at fundraisers (standard among big-time coaching jobs) and his annual job searches.

Tuberville is talking out of his back-side. I’m a Tech alum and have been a fan all of my life. The fact remains that Lubbock is still going to be Lubbock. In order to win all those championships you have to have more than excitement in the communtiy, you have to have a location that is inviting to youngsters. If you’re from West Texas, Lubbock is great. If you’re from South Florida, it sucks four ways from Sunday. It is easy to win championships in Miami and it’s relatively easy to win in Austin, but winning the same in Lubbock is a pipe dream. Without commiting Craig James like offenses against NCAA policy there is no way in hell you are going to get the same talent base to come to Lubbock that our neighbors in Austin are able to attract. I wish the man all the best, but it appears that he is experiencing delusions of grandure and is on the verge of mental collapse with his grand pronouncements of championship football coming to the South Plains. Leach was crazy too, but at least he was honest about it. Tub is in serious denial that he is in a dead-end job and is destined to end his coaching carreer in utter mediocrety.

I’m having a hard time connecting much of the conversation on here to the actual story. I liked Mike but he’s gone. I’m much more interested in what knowing what Tuberville brings to the table than pondering the demise of Mike Leach. Do I think the admisitration needs an overhaul? Yes. Does that in any way relate to this story? No.
I like what I’m hearing from Coach Tubberville. I’m fired up over the level of professionalism that he brings to the program. If our guys get winded from walking a quarter mile then we’re in big trouble. I really don’t understand where all this fear of change comes from. Look, Lubbock went “wet” and the sky didn’t come crashing down. I’ve never growing up in Lubbock and attending Tech I never went to a spring game, but if I can get up to L-town I’ll be at it this year.

Hey Lane H–
Tech has 4 recuits coming from Florida next year; three from south florida (2 from Miami and 1 from Ft. Lauderdale) and 1 from central Florida (Lakeland, whose brother is coming next year and is the preseason #2 player in all of Florida according to the Orlando Sentinel). I guess that makes your statement about Lubbock sucking to Florida kids look kind of silly.
Also , all this “Lubbock can’t compete with the big boys” talk is just a frame of mind, a losers frame of mind. It just takes the right person to change things. Texas sucked before Darrell Royal, Florida sucked before Steve Spurier, Alabama and so on. There are a lot of podunk towns in the SEC and most of them have great teams. Coach Leach brought us to this level; now maybe Tubs will take us to the next level. Unite! Quit being haters and doom and gloomers and support those kids that play for us.

I see what you’re saying and I’m sure Leach didn’t harm Adam James. I defended everything Leach did for ten years until he played sticks, who was too injured to play, against OSU. All I’m saying is it’s not uncommon for someone to be suspended and then the investigation follows, especially when it involves students and injury. That is not denying due process and Leach sued the school for that. Now I’m exited about how Tuberville is working so hard, something Leach was never known for. I have to go to bed. Good Night.

You tell me if my facts are wrong. Why was leech fired? There has to be some reason. “Reason”

What did they have to gain. I just told you money! They hired another coach at a cheaper salary and they renigged on Leach’s bonus. So like I said it is all about money and egos. Some of those in charge just couldn’t stand that people liked Leach and came to see him and his team. They wanted to see what he had up his sleeve this week. You know when the coach gets more popular than the big alums and the chancellor it doesn’t fly well. Another reason he was fired and this is probably the real one is that he wouldn’t kiss the rich alumni asses like everyone else does. Sometimes a man has to decide he wants to be a man and not a ass kissing brown noser. The alumni should have been happy he was filling the stadium. So much for this debate your head is about as thick as the concrete they poured in the new part of the stadium. We will just have to wait and see how everything plays out. You and I arguing aren’t going to change a damned thing.

I lived in the day when they were in the cellar all the time. It was nice to have the be respected and feared for a change. I am not saying Tubs won’t do the same. What I can’t make you understand is all that is wanted is a good man’s reputation restored. Whether or not you think he was a good man there must have been a lot of people in Lubbock who did. And yes it was Mike Leach’s team. Do you think those boys could get out there and play like they did if they didn’t have a coach. It is just like at UT the team is Mack Brown’s team. The team at Tech will now be Tubs team. So get real! Who do I think built the expansion? Yes season ticket holders and all the other alumni that gives their money to help support Red Raider football. If Tommy can’t win the big game, “NC” after ten years. Then I say, fire him, just like we did Spike and Mike. It’s about winning the big game. Not playing in the toilet bowl every year. Mike took us as far as he could. Spike was a good coach, Mike was better, now let’s hope Tommy is better.
We are close to the next level. Ten years is enough time. As a matter of fact, to much time. Look at Stoops Ou sucked, and in two years wins a “NC”. Same thing Urban Meyers. Great coach’s win and win fast.
This is not a re-build, but a reload. This time with a coach. Let’s just hope Tommy is not our Gun Smoke. If you really follow football you know who Gun Smoke is.

Tech has a lot of talent returning and the Big 12 will be in a down year, without out all of the disruptions we would have owned the Big 12 in 2010. Now we have the most potential for disaster, I still can’t figure out why we got here.
I suspect that we will see Mike Leach coaching again soon, maybe in the Big 12. Keep in mind that Tuberville had zero job offers despite putting his name out there for every opening. Tuberville left Auburn because his Administration and boosters didn’t like him. His best season at AU they flew out to interview other coaches during the season.

Sounds like Tommy is AU’s Mike Leech. Your saying Tech did the same thing to Mike. So Tommy got screwed by AU. And why don’t you like Tommy? Sounds like the same person according to you.
According to Tommy could not find a job. “I’m retiring” he never once looked at another job after AU. You are spouting Crap.

I can’t understand why you guys hate Tommy so much. He has done nothing to you. Thank God atleast someone wanted to coach at Tech.

Wow Tuberville came out of retirement just to coach at Tech, the unreliable media had him calling Kansas trying to get that job. I am sure that he contacted South Florida as well or maybe they had that wrong too. Niether of those jobs would be as attractive as Tech.
I have nothing against Tuberville and think he will be adequate as a coach for Tech, but for the Red Raiders to win in the Big 12, we cannot be just like everybody else. We need to be a Team, we need to do our jobs, we need to be the most exited to play, and we need to be smarter than the opposition.

What injustice! The Red Raiders below the Bears? Tommy Tuberville is a good coach, but the transition to Tech could be a difficult one. “Don’t be surprised if the Red Raiders prove me wrong, “

The reason why Leech was fired.
“In a defiant act of insubordination, Coach Leach continually refused to cooperate in a meaningful way to help resolve the complaint. He also refused to obey a suspension order and instead sued Texas Tech University,” the statement said.
Texas Tech officials provided Leach a letter setting out guidelines for dealing with student-athletes. Leach refused to sign it. The letter was included in court papers filed in response to his motion for a restraining order.
Among the guidelines:
_ “Decisions regarding whether an injury warrants suspension from practice and/or play will be determined by a physician without pressure from you or your staff.”
_”There will be no retaliation against any student who as suffered an injury.”

Every time you bring him up during a story about the new program, I will continue to make fun of Leech and Team Leechers.
Go ahead and have some fun with it. What I think is funny is that I am not nor have ever been a Team Leacher. I saw them as an emotional group that would peter out without accomplishing anything. That has pretty much proven true.
What I am is one of the masses who have been disgusted by the whole affair. I don’t live in Lubbock, am not a homer, but bleed red and black in a sea of maroon and orange. My friends who aren’t TT alumns had become fans but have now lost interest. Our reputation as a program has been tarnished. Not by what happened on the field, but by the politics off of it.
The Team Leacher’s are the least of Tech and Tuberville’s problems. They may differ with you on this issue but they are still rabid fans. They care deeply. Tech’s problem is that it just lost a lot of its casual fan base. That is where the recruits come from, where the tickets and merchandise are bought. That is where the demand for TV coverage starts. This whole episode just threw water on a building fire. That said, winning cures all ills. That is the case in Austin, Norman and College Station. It will prove the same in Lubbock. If you wins 10 games people will support you. 6 wins won’t even get regional coverage. If Tuberville wins 9 games next season, the pressure is off and the program regains some traction. Otherwise, we slide back to the Jerry Moore days.

Man, what a bunch of “Stepford fans”. The Admin and the b.s. spewing from Tubers mouth has you guys hook, line and sinker. You guys look like one of those lame fish being reeled in from a playa lake. Tuber is a con man with the rest of ‘em. Of course it was sold out. Plenty of people want to say “they shook the hand of Tuber” while he is at Tech. Notice I say “while”. He hasn’t signed. Hmm. I wonder if he’s go for the trifecta and send a resume to A&M again.?
How many of those people in the crowd bought tickets on their own and how many were given those tickets by an Athletic Department still licking it’s wounds over the Leach deal?
Sure Tuber is gonna say he didn’t come to Tech to win 7 or 8 games, sheesh, that’s part of a script written by Kent Hance. What do you expect him to say? “Um, I’m coming from the SEC where defense is king and I can’t wait to be stomped by Texas, OU and A&M’s Big 12 style air game?” Nope. He’s not gonna say that but he’ll have all the answers come next fall when he doesn’t win 6 or 7 games.
Maybe we should go over the excuses now for him so he’ll have them memorized:
A) “Um, I’m just picking up the pieces of a program left in shambles”
B) “They played great offense but we played better defense, but in the end the defense couldn’t win the game”
C)” I’m having to deal with bad attitudes left to me by the former coach.”
D) “Did I say we played good defense”
E) “Well, it was tough game and someone has to lose, unfortunately it just wasn’t our day to win”
F) “We played tough D”.
G)”I have a staff that is still trying to get a grasp on this team and we hope to have the kinks worked out by the end of the season”
H)”Oh, did I say we would have the kinks worked out by the last game? I was talking next year”
I) “It was great coaching here at Texas Tech, I’ve decided to go to A&M”
So there you go “Stepford fans”, line up behind your guy, he’s leading you right off a cliff.

I am a little skeptical of someone who comes riding in blowing smoke up everybody’s dresses. Tuberville is quite the salesman with major delusions of grandeur. Never trust a snake oil salesman. Good luck with that one!
The house that Mike Leach built will always be present at Texas Tech. He was the one who brought in the revenue to rebuild Jones Stadium.
Make no mistake about it… Texas Tech IS going to lose a lot of money when they have to ‘pay out’ the money it owes Mike Leach!! That will only cause ticket prices to go up and I don’t think that most Lubbockites have that kind of money to be spending on a football game. Lubbock, being stuck out in the middle on nowhere, will never be an economic boom town. To forecast economic stimulus from a football game, is a little insane, to say the least.

Well, at the age of 65, a person of principles, I am certainly glad that I don’t have to depend on some of you to watch out for my back! Wow! I’m appalled at the lack of respect towards others in here AND the lack of principles. If you are younger, I expect that,…but I shouldn’t! I just know that the attention span of most younger people are that of a gnat, and the strength of character is lacking in so many. If you support Tubs, so be it, but respect those who don’t. If you support Coach Leach, fine, but don’t speak against those who don’t. I support Coach Leach because he is an outstanding coach and brought excitement to Tech that I had not seen in my lifetime. Tubs may bring that and more, but I haven’t seen it yet, and I won’t put him on a white horse before he “shows us the money” so to speak!!! I love Tech, and will ALWAYS love Tech, but my Tech spirit has been deeply wounded and it will be a long time before it returns, if it does. For many, that is just the way it is. For those of you who don’t like that, so be it, but you don’t have to show lack of respect towards those who feel that way. When I first heard what was coming out of Lubbock back in December, I thought,…surely there has got to be more to the story than that!!!!!! There was and is, and we hope that it does come out. That should be part of the honor of the school. It is good that Coach Leach is gone, because there was a misfit there that could not be overcome. Regardless of whatever you say about Hance, positive or negative, he did not act in good faith and that is a fact. His best interest for Tech might have been there, but he acted inappropriately and illegally. Those two words plus a few others such as principles and strength of character seem to be missing in here today. I have been around Kent Hance, and he is a fraternity brother of one of my close friends. Sorry, he might be a good guy, but I’m just not that impressed. He was hired to raise money, and he has. He has done so using Coach Leach’s name and record. THAT is funny! The love/hate relationship they had helped Tech, but it may have hurt Tech also. I do know that the growth of the school, the campus, the football program, and all other programs grew tremendously with the excitement over Coach Leach and what he brought. He just wasn’t a good fit for the small-minded west Texas mindset, and that is all right. He has moved on. MEANWHILE, throwing a person’s good name and reputation under an 18-wheeler is not justified, and therefore, that is where I am focused for the time being. Until Coach Leach’s honor and good name is restored, I just can’t get too excited over anything else about Tech, because I don’t believe in any institution who will trash someone like they did and get by with it. “Striving for honor” as the song says means more to many of us than just words. Tech, due to the administration and the BOR, lost that trait for Tech, and it needs to be restored. Meanwhile, Tubs is welcome to try to make a better football program. It will be a while before what he does has HIS trademark on it, because what he has right now is mostly Coach Leach’s. Regardless of the HATE that some of you seem to have towards Leach, that is true. I do know that Tubs is a good coach, so he stands the chance to have success. I just hope the small-minded west Texas people will give him the chance when Tubs does something that they don’t like. Tubs is there for one reason…to build a great football program. That is all! They need to stay off his back.

Pamela,
Well said, but let me ask you a question—should a “person of principles” take action when they see illegal acts occur? More to the point—have you or anyone else besides Mike Leach filed any complaints with any appropriate legal policing body? If not, then don’t we loose the right to call ourselves a “person of principles”. Or, we shouldn’t say someone has acted illegally unless we follow that statement up with a formal complaint. Right?
I have seen obvious violations of the OP 10.11 Ethics Policy. The Standard of Conduct has been thrown under the 18- wheeler. How many people have written complaints to the Texas Ethics Commission? I’m told only one—mine. Where are the rest of you? Only one complaint coming in doesn’t seem to count for much.

The one thing that keeps getting between my support for a new coach? On Jan. 5, I was told by Kent Hances secretary that “our position is this will all blow over IF we make the right hire”. Now, if Tubbs is as great as he thinks he is and he was the right hire there is an inherent danger in supporting him.
It is like a mid 20th century German saying “Well, Adolf did say he would improve our military position” AT WHAT COST

I found out this morning that the TEC can’t suggest more than your individual complaint if filed. In other words, they can’t by law suggest additional complaints are filed or pending. Anyway, that’s what they said.
