Lady Bears fight and claw their way to victory past Texas Tech

Tempers flared, a punch was thrown and the benches cleared Wednesday night at United Spirit Arena.

The on-court scuffle preceded No. 14 Baylor’s 69-60 victory against the Lady Raiders, but the tiff almost propelled Tech to a win in what was its most important game of the season.

Tech struggled throughout the first half and things got worse at the start of the second. The Lady Raiders trailed 55-39 with 9:01 left in the game, when Tech forward Jordan Barncastle was called for a foul after locking elbows with Baylor’s 6-foot-8 freshman phenom Brittney Griner.

Griner took offense and threw a punch at Barncastle, which caught the sophomore’s face and nose, causing a frenzy on the court as both benches cleared.

“There’s no place for that in sports,” Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. “I will deal with Brittney Griner and it won’t be discussed in the media. Not me or (Tech coach) Kristy (Curry) or any player will be proud of what took place on the court tonight.”

Barncastle and Griner had exchanged words in Baylor’s first victory against Tech this season back on Feb. 17 in Waco, and that tension seemed to carry over into Wednesday.

Barncastle had been playing feisty face-up defense against Griner all game, and the two were often struggling for position in the post.

The game was delayed approximately 10 minutes as officials reviewed the incident. Barncastle left the court to tend to her bloodied nose, but returned to a cheering crowd. Griner, consequently, was escorted off the court to a chorus of boos.

The officials gave Griner and Baylor forward Morghan Medlock technical fouls, and the Tech bench also received a technical.

Kelli Griffin made one of her two free throws for Baylor. Barncastle, wearing No. 50 when she returned and with a tissue up her nose to stop the bleeding from the punch, sank four consecutive free throws to bring Tech within 13.

Barncastle remained on the bench for a few more possessions but left shortly after and did not return. Curry said Barncastle may be lost for the rest of the season with the injury. Barncastle is scheduled to see a doctor this morning.

Griner is likely facing further discipline from both Baylor and the Big 12 Conference.

The Lady Raiders went on a 16-5 run after the scuffle and brought their deficit to within five points, the closest the game had been since early in the first half — and as close as the game would get.

Tech sent the Lady Bears to the free-throw line 12 times in the final three minutes and Baylor (22-7, 9-6 in Big 12) held on to win.

“This has been the most tight knit group since I’ve been here,” Curry said. “This is what families do. They rally through adversity. But we lost the basketball game so none of us feel good right now.

“We’re all in shock right now. It’s very unfortunate. My only concern is for Jordan Barncastle.”

The loss will likely hinder Tech (17-12, 5-10) from making the NCAA tournament, but Curry and the Lady Raiders are still keeping their eyes on that ultimate prize.

If Tech defeats Missouri on Sunday, it will head to the Big 12 Tournament with a 6-10 conference record.
Teams have gotten into the NCAA Tournament with a 7-9 record, but none has ever made it at 6-10.

“I have no doubt in my mind that we can go to Missouri and win the first round of the (Big 12) tournament,” Curry said. “The past is no predictor of the future and when you’re on the committee you look at the body of work. How we’ve done down the stretch, I still think we can get in.”

Despite missing the final nine minutes, Griner finished with a game-high 21 points.

Monique Smalls notched her career-high with 13 points, and Jordan Murphree scored a team-high 16.

griner is a punk / thug. she should be suspended the rest of the season and have to pay all medical costs for barncastle. if this would have happened off the court she would have been charged with felony assault. come to think of it, suspension for the rest of the season may not be enough to punish her/him.

Brittney Griner should not have hit anyone and I’m sure she will be held accountable for what she did. But, will Barncastle have to answer for what she did??? After watching all the video floating around it was obvious that what she did was intentional. She too should be held accountable!

MHGS: there’s a big difference between an intentional foul that causes bodily injury and what that doesn’t. Barncastle was called for a foul on that play. Players hook arms like that all the time, and if they get caught, it should be a foul. But that does NOT give any player the right to haul off and sucker punch another player. I agree with TXTECHDAD…Griner is a punk, and if she did that anywhere else, she would have been arrested for assault. She should not be permitted to play in the NCAA playoffs…that’s the only punishment that would really be felt by her and the Baylor team.

Look at this from every angle, I did!! I have DVR and I replayed and replayed this out over and over, just to be sure I was seeing it right. Baylor’s outside player was about to shoot a 3 pointer, Barncastle and the SheHe were battling for possible rebound position inside. Barncastle stopped the 3 point attempt by commiting a hard foul on SheHe and if you look close enough you do see the ref call the foul and whistle, and Barncastle walk to position herself at theline, at the same time you see SheHe come towards Barncastle with FULL INTENTIONS and FORCE and punch Barncastle…. and the rest unfolds. SheHe ignored the whistle and went around a player to get to Barncastle, this was a flat out assault on Barncastle and SheHe should not be allowed to play the remainder of the season, PERIOD!!!

If the officials would control the games things like this would not happen. Griner has been played overly physical all year. That still does not excuse her actions but the officials sure called the post game different last year for Courtney Paris. You just breathed against her and you were called for a foul. Barncastle was wrong but Griner needs to control her temper. As both coaches stated, her actions were way out of line.

I do not condone what Griner did (it has no place in sports), but Barncastle instigated the whole situation. Then to watch Barncastle on the bench laughing it up as Baylor was winning showed me a lot. Why would a ‘competitor’ who had been sucker-punched and whose team was losing be laughing on the bench? Someone with a true competitive spirit should be just a little upset, I think. Maybe that is why the lady raiders have been in the bottom quarter of the standings in the big 12 for the past few years. And to think Curry said, “We’re all in shock right now. It’s very unfortunate. My only concern is for Jordan Barncastle.” Maybe she is concerned that Barncastle has no spine and not that she was injured (which she likely wasn’t based on her actions/demeanor on the sideline).

i played before title IX. all the same, excessive physicality, cheap shots, uncalled flagrant fouls and other “accepted abuse” were considered part of the game, even then. finally, in my senior year, i retaliated against a player in the last 2 minutes of a game & only after enduring a lot of abuse (and crap!) and knowing my team had secured the “win.” i “kneed” her after she “sucker punched” me yet again in the abdomen – something the refs could not see (and which after 38 minutes of play, had left me with a black & blue abdomen for the following 3 weeks – yes, i was hit that hard). i was ejected to a “standing ovation.” if i had to do it all over again, i would have gone for her face or knee instead of her stomach. why? self defense! and because such a “dirty” player didn’t deserve to be on the court.

my point is that eventually, EVERYBODY is going to “come after” a stellar, productive player in some way. unfortunately, not everybody is going to do so in a sportsmanlike manner…. “beat her up!” if you can’t beat her by real skills!!! for chrissakes this is basketball – and not football where “hitting” hard is not only expected, but taught. i’d like to believe there is still a difference between the 2 sports – other than the increased safety of wearing pads and a helmet i football.

after that game (the only one in which i was EVER ejected – playing many sports over many years), the coach told me about the “offending” player’s background. apparently that girl’s high school coach determined each game’s starting line ups by rolling a ball out onto the floor. whoever got the ball by any means, started. this was done until she had her starting 5. wow! what a way to teach aggressiveness!

who ever said “girls” are soft and fluffy anyway? would this same situation be getting any attention in top 25 men’s basketball?” or in the pros?

i say “good ya” for defending yourself!!! maybe it’ll make others (and coaches!) who can’t more “purely” play the game, think twice.

First things first, the name calling is not necessary. I do not condone and will never condone anyone hitting/punishing another player in any sport. I did not see the game, however, I saw the re-rplay and it was not called for. I am sure Kim (coach) will do what is right as a former basketball player. Players (women as well as men) need to be held accountable for their inappropriate behavior. It is obvious something was on her mind, which still does not give her the right to lash out at another player. As stated in one of the other comments if she was on the streets, she would have gotten arrested, and maybe that needs to happen or maybe Jordan should press chargers. It needs to stop here and now, so no other player think they could do it and get away with it. I respect Baylor’s coach for taking charge and not trying to justifiy for Griner behavior.

With all respect to both teams, good luck with the rest of the season.

It has been a couple of years since I’ve been to a Tech basketball game (I’m not a Tech alum), so the SMALL crowd was embarrassing! I am frustrated with those of you calling Griner a SheHe and other derogitory terms. Yes, I know she hit someone, but I think some of you are calling her names because of her tall frame. That’s the way God made her, so back off. I don’t blame Tech fans at all for being angry with Griner but “booing” the entire Baylor team for the rest of the game was uncalled for in the end.

i’d “bitch-slap” anyone i perceived as out to try to hurt me instead of “beating” me by their own natural talents – and my scholarship be damned. why? the risk of PERMANENT injury that could impair my ability to walk for example, isn’t worth a “scholarship.” did i say scholarship? NOT! i’d be happy to contribute to any fund necessary for her to complete her college education.

sadly, her actions are exactly what it might ultimately take to survive in much of today’s business world – even after being nice in previous “games.”

if coaches “coach,” condone, or allow the levels of physicality that can remove players from the game (if not cause permanent injury) in a non-contact sport, then something really needs to change.

The New Mexico girl gets suspended for the YEAR for pulling on the ponytail of the BYU player who had just elbowed her and grabbed at her private parts.

Brittany is a baby and a prima dona. Freshman do not get preferential treatment anywhere. The comment about Paris from OU is a joke. Paris had to suffer the same way, as has DeHan at Michigan State. Have either of them acted like Brittany? No. They need to check out Brittany like they did with the woman from South Africa, who ended up having male characteristics. Either she has major psychological problems, or perhaps it is genetic. Either way, Brittany needs to be tested, for her own good. Otherwise she may end up KILLING ONE OF HER OWN TEAMMATES, like the guy on the Baylor men’s basketball team. And noone wants Brittany to MURDER one of her own players, or even HER COACH when she loses it again. And if she does NOT GET THE HELP she needs, she probably will lose it again. Only next time she may actually KILL the other person. A hit to the nose can KILL, and the Big 12, the NCAA and Baylor ARE NOT HELPING BRITTANY by not making sure she does not GET THE HELP that she drastically need. A NORMAL person does not lose it and break the nose of the other lady. And those who commented on Barncastle laughing, you got it totally wrong. She could not believe the a student athlete from Baylor would lose it and break her nose. Reminds us all of Mike Tyson when he bit the year of one his opponents. I had a teammate who had his finger bitten by an University of Arizona ice hockey player when I was at USC, and thought the Arizona ice hockey players and their coach (who condoned the biting?) were psychopaths, but the Baylor women’s basketball players, their fans and their coach are now on the top of the Sports Psychopaths list. Anyone who would condone what Brittany did in response to a hard foul also needs help. There is NEVER a reason to break an opponents nose when one is fouled. Did the BYU player punch the New Mexico player? No. She laughed it off like Barncastle did. The BYU and Barncastle had the RIGHT Response to the hair pulling and the assault by Brittany. Leave if for the authorities, NCAA, MWC and Big 12, New Mexico and Baylor to do the right thing. New Mexico and the MWC suspended the New Mexico player for the rest of the year for pulling the BYU player’s pony tail, after she had been elbowed and had her private parts pinched by the BYU player. And what did Baylor, the Big 12 and the NCAA do to Brittany for breaking the nose of Barncastle, assaulting her? Give her a two game suspension. Baylor SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN either a NCAA or NIT Bid. Since Baylor, the Big 12 and the NCAA DID NOT DO THE RIGHT THING, the NCAA and NIT selection committees should. Ban Baylor from both the NCAA and NIT tournaments TO PROTECT the female athletes from Brittany losing it a second time. Maybe THEN, Baylor, the Big 12 and the NCAA will make sure that Brittany gets the help she needs. Violence is not the SOLUTION. Just read Ghandi, Nelson Mandella (who was violent like Brittany, before he saw the light) and Jesus Christ. We all need to pray for Brittany, and for Baylor, the Big 12 and the NCAA to do the right thing. Breaking an opponent’s nose with a punch DESERVES an automatics ONE year suspension!! not sitting out only two games.

Barncastle should take out a RESTRAINING ORDER on Brittany so that over the next two years, Brittany is not allowed to play against Texas Tech. It is the right thing to do, now that Baylor, the Big 12 and the NCAA are not seeing to it that Brittany is made to get the help, that she so drastically needs. Mike Tyson did not get the help he so drastically needed, and he ended up being a repeat OFFENDER. And also the Michigan State football players, Winston, who did assault one of the MSU ice hockey players, and even had to serve time. But he did not get the TREATMENT and psychological help he needed. And then when he was pushed down on the dance floor by an Iota, he came back with many of MSU teammates and they did MUCH LESS to the Iotas than what Brittany did to Barncastle. From MSU’s mistake in not getting Winston help, Baylor, the Big 12 and the NCAA should learn. Do not be surprised if Brittany is a repeat offender like Winston from MSU. Hopefully now when Winston is sentenced now for HIS SECOND assault, they will make sure he gets the psychological treatment and counsel he so drastically needed and did not get and still needs. It will be sad when Brittany loses it again. And who will be responsible for the injury to the next women’s basketball players, or referee or opposing coach/fan? The Baylor women’s basketball coach, the Baylor AD, the Baylor President and Board of Trustees, who DID NOT MAKE sure that Brittany got the psychological help which she needs. And the Big 12 and the NCAA will also be partially responsible, for not making Baylor do more. The University of Oregon made sure their athlete who assaulted the Boise State player got help. The MWC and the Pac 10 know how to suspend their players for inappropriate actions. But the Big 12 and the Big 10, look the other way and in the long run, the players like Winston and Brittany DO NOT GET THE HELP WHICH THEY SO NEEDED/NEED. Sad. Really sad. To win a few extra games, Michigan State and Baylor do not take the appropriate actions to make sure Winston and Brittany get the psychological help they needed/need. Ask Winston from MSU now if HE HAD WISHED that MSU would have required HIM to get the help after the first assault. MSU should have also required him to take an anger and emotion handling class, like the University of Oregon required for their student athlete. Sad state of affairs at Baylor and MSU. They should follow the lead of both New Mexico and the University of Oregon to discipline their out of control athletes. And not only athletes lose it. Just look what happened with Professor Amy Bishop at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. Does this lie ahead in Brittany’s future? I certainly hope not. But if she does not get the help she needs, perhaps it will. And who will be responsible?

Check out the head check by Matt Cooke from Pittsburgh on Savard from Boston. And no penalty was called. Cooke is a criminal and a repeat offender. Fortunately in ice hockey a player can be suspended even if the referees did not call a penalty.’

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/nhl/2010-03-08-gms-meetings_N.htm

And Brittany’s hit was much worse then Matt Cooke’s. The seasons are probably over for both Savard and Barncaslte, so they should also be over for both Cooke and Brittany. The NHL is now considering legislation for head checks. The NCAA should make a new rule also. Anyone who punches another player in the head gets an automatics YEAR suspension. And if you break someone’s nose, blind someone or break someone’s eardrum, you get a TWO year suspension. A second offense, and you are banned for LIFE and also CAN NEVER represent the USA in the OLYMPICS. But then Kobe Bryant was allowed to represent the USA after he assaulted the coed in Colorado, so Brittany will probably be able to even though she assaulted Barncastle and broke her nose. And we wonder why we have so much violence against women. When the NCAA allows women like Brittany to assault other players like Barncastle, and only suspend them for two games, WHAT message does this tell young women/ladies about assaulting each other. And what does the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers and the USA men’s Olympic teams tell the WHOLE world about violence against women by men (Kobe’s assault of the Colorado coed)? It is ok. You would think we had enough good men’s basketball players in the USA without having to have Kobe represent the USA. I am surprised NOW did not boycott the USA Basketball team when Kobe was selected. But then Candice Parker from Tennessee has acted as bad as Brittany and has had no real consequences by the WBA. No wonder Brittany thinks it is ok to do what she did to Barncastle. Candice Parker has taken swings in the WBA and has had not real discipline. The women’s college and professional leagues, NEED TO HAVE A ZERO TOLERANCE for taking a swing/fighting. ONE YEAR SUSPENSION. If one hits and breaks a nose, blinds or breaks an eardrum, TWO year suspension for FIRST TIME. A second time earns a LIFETIME BAN.
