Tech coordinator plans to keep it simple, add some new touches
In an attempt to make his presentation applicable for all listeners, Neal Brown went over three plays he said were easy to install in any offense from wishbone to spread.
It’s not as if his playbook is Webster’s Dictionary thick to begin with. Speaking Saturday at the 28th annual West Texas Football Clinic, the new Texas Tech offensive coordinator said next year’s Red Raiders might need to know as few as a dozen plays — three or four runs and six to eight pass routes.
“We’re not trying to recreate the wheel,’’ Brown said later. “We’ll decorate those plays up by motioning and doing some things like that, but we’re going to be pretty simple in our approach.’’
As philosophies go, it’s not a radical departure from former Tech coach Mike Leach, who believed in drilling his players in a small package of plays and then running them with ruthless efficiency on fall Saturdays.
Brown and new Tech coach Tommy Tuberville say they’re smart enough not to do away with what worked so well for Leach. Brown told a roomful of coaches at the Holiday Inn Park Plaza that his four-point philosophy includes playing fast, being simple and detail oriented, throwing to set up the run and getting the football to playmakers in space.
Differences?
-The Raiders will use some empty-backfield formations, something Leach almost never did. Brown said he used empty sets three to five plays a game in his last job — offensive coordinator at Troy University, which finished third in the nation in total offense last season.
“It wasn’t a deal where we got in it and stayed in it a bunch, but we definitely will utilize it some,’’ he said.
-There might be plays in which the Raiders line up with four receivers bunched to one side, with running back Baron Batch stationed in a pod behind three wideouts.
-Tech quarterbacks will be allowed to switch from one play to another at the line of scrimmage, but won’t have the broad latitude that Leach gave them.
“Part of (the reason), he was here a long time, and those guys were on the same mind frame,’’ Brown said. “The guys we have at quarterback are smart, but I want to be careful about putting too much on them. I want them to be playing and not thinking. I don’t think either way’s wrong. There’s just different ways to do it.’’
In what Brown described as “the triple option,’’ Taylor Potts or Steven Sheffield would come to the line with three possibilities: Throw a quick screen to the three- or four-wide side; throw a slant, an out route or a fly pattern if there’s one-on-one coverage to the other side; or — if the linebackers empty out — run a quarterback draw.
“Checking’’ will consist of choosing between one run play and one or two pass plays or vice versa.
“They’re not going to have the whole playbook to check to,’’ Brown said. “It’ll be, ‘You can check from play A to play B, but not to all of them.’ ’’
-Leach seldom used motion, but Brown will incorporate it a little bit more.
“We won’t be a huge motion team either,’’ he said, “but we’ll have a wrinkle or two of motion each week. It’s not going to be a deal where we’ll motion every play.. I don’t believe in that either.’’
-In the Leach era, announcers and opposing coaches made frequent reference to the offensive line’s wide splits. Brown said the usual line splits at Troy were about 3 feet, the ones Tech has used at about 4 feet.
Now he guesses they’ll be somewhere in between.
“We’re going to be as wide as we can and still be able to run the zone,’’ he said, referring to the Raiders’ bread-and-butter rushing play.
Brown said he hasn’t decided yet how to send in plays. Leach flashed hand signals to the quarterback, who then referenced a playlist in his wristband.
Brown said he won’t use a system that Troy used at times in which all 11 offensive players looked to the
sideline at the line of scrimmage.
“We won’t do that here,’’ he said. “The skill guys may, but the O-line won’t.’’
The decision has been made to keep the same terminology Leach used, partly because Brown started his playing career at Kentucky when Leach was offensive coordinator there. Brown said the terminology he learned then and calls the Raiders made last year were identical.
“I feel like I’m in a time warp and I’m 17 years old again learning this offense,’’ he said. “I may have a flashback every once in a while where I call (a play) what I did at Troy, but we’re going to keep the same terminology.’’
Some of Brown’s offensive goals include running at least 75 plays per game — he said Troy twice reached 100-plus snaps last season — and taking care of the football. To the latter end, the last thing the Raiders will work each practice will be ball security. And there’ll be reminders beyond that.
“You’ll see ball-security signs in every one of our meeting rooms,’’ Brown said.
A little more than 500 coaches registered for the annual clinic. It concludes today with presentations by Brady High School coach Glen Jones at 9 a.m. and Bushland coach David Flowers at 10:30 a.m. They led their teams to state semifinal and state final appearances, respectively, in 2009.

Execution. If this guy can teach them how to execute the offense, they’ll be okay! The Air Raid is really a simple offense; success like everything else is determined by execution and the play callers ability to have a feel for what needs to be done in the course of the game. Leach had the benefit of being around this offense since its inception into college football and was very good at teaching the execution of the offense and had a feel for it, probably even better then the orginal architect of the offense Hal Mumme….We’ll see what happens!

NB said all the right things. Those who read my post two days ago might recall my comment that “good offenses use the pass or run to set up the other….”. Apparently NB agrees. I like the QB draw and always wanted Leach to use it. 1-2 QB draws and 1-2 QB keepers on the zone read per game will be very helpful any several ways. Let’s all pray TT doesn’t tinker with the offense and slowly drift it to a SEC game. For those gimmicky folks out there. let’s keep the gimmick offense and add a gimick defense so we can win a gimmick National Championship.

Over the years I have followed the Tech recruiting process on various recruiting sites and under Leach…he would get five or six 4 star players that put Tech as a Team of interest. This year under Tubberville I see that at this point…four 5 star players have Tech as a team of interest and seventeen 4 star players.
Seems a few people don’t want to give the new Tech coaches a chance. I am excited about Tech football. Keeping the wide open offense. Plus, adding a SEC style of defense…and the quality of players is improving.
This team barely lost to Texas who played in the National Championship game. With the improvements all the way around…how can you not get excited about Tech Football?
Just the though of a defense at Tech…with that offense…it is going to be a very fun year watching Tech Football. Not to mention what “The Riverboat Gambler” throws in.
The biggest changes will come not this year because Tubberville only had the three weeks to bring in the kids Leach recruited plus the few he got. The biggest change will come in 2011 after his first full recruiting class. The difference is already visible.

Most encouraging words I’ve seen in an article in awhile. Like the fact that the offensive coach is relearning the terminology for the kids’ benefit. Also sounds like the starting QB has been decided by default.

I am not a longhorn fan, i do, however, live in the real world where i know that things will go back to the pre-leach era at Texas Tech. I am not laughing at you guys for being hopeful, but the truth of the matter is that we have a guy that i think is not a very good coach despite of his track record. I simply dont think that he can do at Tech what he has done elsewhere. I am also still really disgusted with the ouster of Mike Leach. (and please dont call me a team leacher.) I think that supporting the school means that you are in agreement with the way meyers and company run the school, specifically the athletic department . I do not wish to agree to anything that they do, including the hiring of tuberville.

bernie,
Leach didn’t have much of a track record when he came to Tech as a head coach. So to dog Brown is one thing, but to question Tuberville’s record is assinine and uneducated.
Remove your head and along with that crip new UT cap you bought from Wal-Mart out of Mack Brown’s backside and think about that for a second.
Tuberville’s history command’s respect. In fact, he has just as many skins on the wall as Mack. He understands how to run a program and ran it successfully in the best conference in college football. Do you have any evidence that would lead us to believe he would field an unsuccessful program?

Tuberville took an Auburn team that was 3 – 8 in 1998 to SEC West champs in his 2nd season. They started off 3 – 0 in his first season, including a rout of LSU in Baton Rouge, but lost a close game in Oxford against Ole Miss, who he coached the previous year, and lost his quarterback to the physical defense he had built at Ole Miss. From there on they struggled, but they scored a huge upset rout of Georgia in Athens after their quarterback healed, and finished up the season with a close loss to SEC champ Alabama and Shaun Alexander. Auburn – LSU games from 2003 – 2007 were some of the most hard hitting college football games ever played in the SEC. I’m talking brutal.

By your comments it is obvious you are a closet horn fan or closet team leacher. No one in their right mind would predict a ut victory over us of 62-9 unless they belong to one of the 2 camps. To say Garrett Gilbert is a better qb than Colt McCoy is the second idiotic point. He will probably be a better passer but his opponents will not have to game plan against his running ability like they did McCoy and ut has not scared anyone with their running game the last 2 years. Also, Mack Brown is not a great head coach but is a great recruiter and is great at hiring assistant coaches but he has millions of dollars to throw at assistants. If you gave Mike Leach the 5 and 4 star recruits that mb has had every year and gave mb the 3 and 2 star recruits that ml has had at TT then Tech would have been playing for national championships and mb would be coaching high school football.

He will be the same lazy, talentless, entitled punk that his daddy raised.

By his own admission Tubberville is not going to do much coaching. The OC and DC will pretty much handle those tasks and Tubby will handle special teams. Head coaches by rule can’t due much recruiting, so the other coaches will handle that as well. So what will Tubby do, the rubber chicken circuit glad handing donors and alums.
So where are we:
OC – definite downgrade- MIke Leach was really the OC, but Neal Brown would be a dowgrade even from Lincoln Riley.
DC – this looks to be a upgrade, but hard to tell since this will be his first year in the position.
Recruiting – none of these guys know how to recruit in Texas yet.
Tech is returning a fair amount of talent, so unless the new crew really screws things up, we should be ok for one year.
Beyond that, well it is hard to look much beyond that with the Bozos that are running the school.

you know that when we run the “empty” set, its going to be a quick out, or a screen off at the sideline. not many can stand in the pocket without a back for too long. i agree that the o-line should not be messed with, i mean even the heisman trophy finalist SUH had a difficult time getting to sheffield (much easier for suh against texas, i might add). i do think our qb should be able to run the ball a little more, especially if we run an “empty set, and run the linebackers out. all tech fans know how much that has hurt us in the past, now its time we started using it. i dont think potts would be the ideal choice for a runner though, but harrell was absolutely terrible at running the ball (just goes to show you can have a great qb without him having great running skills). i also like the idea of keeping it simpler for the qb at the line. having a choice of a few plays instead of the entire playbook (albeit its always been quite thin) would greatly impact audibles. i dont think the qb’s this year had a problem with it, but making something simpler sure cant hurt. and for using motion, i think it will be a nice, welcome change. the only motion weve seen in the past few years has been the rb coming out of the backfield, or crossing the field to get to the sidelines for the quick screen. it was almost a dead give away when we used motion in the past.
now, for the trollers and ut fans, get out. we all know that if mike leach had even a decent amount of 4 star recruits coming to tech consistently, we could have been competing on a much higher level. mack brown is not a players coach, urban meyer is not a players coach, nick saban is not a players coach. they all coach their coordinators, who in turn coach the players so dont give us any of that junk about tuberville not coaching. i do think his first year out will be a little conservative(8-4, 9-3), but in years 2 and 3 for us to be really competing for BCS bowls, and more.

Sorry, I didn’t know we got all excited when a recruit calls us a school of interest. That really means less then diddly squat.
There’s roughly 25 5 stars each year and places like Texas, USC, Fl, are probably called a school of interest of about 20 at this time during the recruiting processnad if lucky will end up w/ 3 or 4. Some recruits have as many as 20-25 schools on their list at this point and some maybe even more. One that I was closely associated with a couple of years ago had a list of nearly 70 at this point of the recruiting process.
Until you get at least a verbal from someone it is hardly worth mentioning and as we painfully know the verbals aren’t very solid either.
I like reading posts of how we should give the guy a chance and judge him on his record, etc., but in the same post we read about being a school of interest for recruits in 2011 or 2012… Let’s not judge Tommy on that either until he has some 5 stars on the dotted line….

If coaches did NOT recruit at all and NEVER said a word to high school players….the best players would go to UT before TT. In the eyes of an 18 year old, where is the most fun, most desireable place to live…it’s simple..Austin.As far as a quality education..both schools are comparable. It’s simply the fact that Austin is a more desireable place than Lubbock.

Anyone who knows anything about Tech football since they joined the old SWC, knows Leach transformed the program and brought some level of respect to it. Without him, I assure you Tech would have been a .400-.500 program with a bowl appearance every 4-6 years. To deny such is comlplete ignorance.
I believe TT and staff can sustain 7-5 seasons +/- one game. I’m not sure they can achieve and sustain 10-2 seasons +/- one game. I’m no longer as concearned with the offense scheme, but am very concearned with the change in o-lineman recruiting. It appears we will recruit head-on with UT, OU, LSU, NU, etc. for those shorter more compact run blocking o-lineman. This, I believe, is a mistake. It will cause a gradual drift to a run focus and reduced o-line splits. We nned to keep recruiting those tall, long armed, HS basketball playing o-lineman with good footwork.

HouRedRaider,
I would like to know where you’re getting your info about 4 & 5 star recruits for 2011…Rivals does not have stars attached yet to the 2011 recruits…has 1 verbal commit to Tech a 5-9, 165 lb receiver from Lakeland, Fl,…He is listed as a Top 250 which means he could be a 3-star or a 4-star, or a 5-star once he’s rated. For the record, according to rivals the early verbal commits in the Big 12 are like this Texas 13, Ok 5, K-State 5, Missouri 4, Neb, 3, Ok St 3, Baylor 2, Tech 1,A&m 1, Colorado 1, Iowa st 0, Kansas 0
I know this stuff doesn’t mean much period, but HouRedRaider said something about 5 5stars and 17 4 stars that Tech has a chance to land & I would first wonder where he got his info and second state that it means even less then the early commits according to Rivals.
The only thing we have so far to judge the performance of Tommy Tuberville is a #41 recruiting class. That is the only concrete thing we have. I know some will say he only had a few weeks and I think that is valid to a point, but would also point out new coaches at USC and Tenn with even less time maintained Top 10 recruiting classes.
I have stated before and will again, I am going to give this staff a chance and do support Tech FB 100%, but I and I think others need to hold them accountable.
We also know at least on paper that Tech has a pretty good nucleus coming back for 2010….We should be able to have a pretty good season…If we don’t this falls on Tommy T and noone else. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of us expecting Big things in 2010 and if it doesn’t happen we can and should be critical of a million dollar plus Major College FB Coach. That is the reality of taking a position he has taken.
That is not “hate” that is not being negative that is just the least any of us should expect!

Which makes me wonder why they waste their time because butter teeth brown always let them find their way back. Great program you have their…orange puke.
Also to TECH fans…baby adam will get booed anytime he is on the field trying to play football…hopefully to the point where it gets so bad he will go hide in the same shed himself.
Tubby will not be ignorant enough to let adam go because he knows the brat is not worth the trouble to cause more ruckus with that POS james family.
Tubby’s recipe for success in the B12 is sound. As a TECH fan, I just hope the program hits the ground running.

Raider4Ever,
I agree w/ you 100%! He came in under tough circumstances and if they have a good year, he should get all the credit. It has to go both ways….that is only fair!

Time Will Tell,
I was refering to 2011 prospects. Read my post again. If you go to the recruiting sites there are those players who have put down Tech as a team of interest. Tech is actually one 5 star players favorites.

I think the pokies should get Leach next. Although I know Poke is not a poky. I lived in Stillwater and most pokes thought Leach and the Air Raid was a joke. I guess your history of Running the Ball is over. Thomas, Sanders, Bell …..

If I re-call OSU never beat Spike. Poke should be sad leech is gone, atleast you were .500 against him.

HouRedRaider,
Upon your suggestion I went to the 2 major recruting websites and what I found was Tech on the list of 3 5-stars for 2011 as a team of interest and the one commit I found on both service was a 3-star receiver that committed on 12/12/09, so prior to Leach and since he is from FL there is certainly a risk of losing….
Of the 3 5-stars where Tech was listed 2 of them from Texas had every D-1 school from Texas except SMU listed and the other one from LA had a total of 9 schools listed including LSU, AL, Tx….so if we are given equal opportunity for all three our chances are 1-16, 1-15, 1-9, giving us a fair chance of landing 1, which would not be bad, (that of course is being an optimist) At any rate you did raise an interesting topic, but what TTU ends up getting only….

OK tinkered with the offense in a similar way when Leach left there and it worked out pretty good for them. I think they won the National Championship the year after Leach came here. It’s crazy, but wouldn’t it be something if the same thing happened again.

I wanted to mention in my last post…ECU was discredited a few weeks back when I posted as being not as good of FB program as the mighty Texas Tech. I would like to remind you that ECU beat TTU 40-27 back in the Bowl at the end of the 2000 season. I believe that was leach’s first year. Of course with the help of Ruffin, Mr Leach did build your team into a pretty powerful outfit before you let him go. Give Ruffin 2 or 3 years and I would like to see us go up against you boys again because I think we would be able to take you again in a few years. Lobby on your end and I’ll lobby on mine. I think it would be interesting

The Meerkat Air Raid is for retards.
I really hope we don’t ever see it here in Lubbock.

Hey ECU have fun with the spread, oh yes and Ruffin was part of Tech durning the Houston bowl. “Houston Bowl” one reason why leech is gone. Maybe Ruffin can get you guys another toilet bowl.

Bleeding Red,
ECU 40 TTU 27. The only time we met. Schedule us again if you have the courage!
Ruffin ended up at the better school. We’re happy to have him, from the looks of things alot of your people aren’t happy with your new coach
Good Luck & again please schedule us again

It would need to be a pre-conference game. Maybe we can schedule you guys instead of East Washington State JV. Have fun with Ruffin and his top 70th worst Defense in the country. Which is why he did not get the job. As for the T-shirt fans on this site, go find another team. I was a Raider when we sucked and will always be.

Bleeding Red,
You don’t seem to understand…the only time we played you we beat you 40-27 in a Bowl Game. granted that was at the end of Leach’s first year before he was able to build the team up like he did, that’s why I say give us a couple of years with Ruffin and your new guy taking your program in the other direction and I think we will be ready to beat you.
You are very arrogant toward a team you have never defeated. Based on head-to-head competition we are superior!

Don’t matter who is coaching, Texas will beat tceh! Mack Brown was 3-2 in Lubbock against the drunken pie rat, and 5-0 in Austin! The 2 losses were by a total of 10 points! Mack Brown’s win in 2004 in Lubbock was a 30 point victory over a team that scored 70 on Nebraska. So dream on if you think leech owned Texas in Lubbock. He never had so much as a 2 game winning streak in Lubbock against UT! HOOK ‘EM HORNS!

Good interview with Leach, he is all over the place, but you always know he is talking straight and not just saying what he thinks you want to hear. I miss him already.

ECU, you don’t get it. Tech is moving in the right direction. ECU is on it’s way down. You should have tried to keep SKIP. He was the best thing to ever happen to you guys. I hope you guys like your swiss cheese “D”, giving up on avg 450 yard a game.
I hope we don’t meet again, it will mean Tech is playing in the toilet bowl. I guess your coach can eat ours. Let’s hope Ruff makes it through the first year.
By the way, I see you are a member of Team Leech. Good luck with that..

What book did Leach talk about. You know he’s always got a good story.

Bleeding Red,
It sounds like you are afraid to play us. We’ll see where the programs are at in 2-3 years. We are glad to have Ruffin & you’ll find out how you do with a coach that is thinking of retirement. Maybe, he’ll have one of his kids ready to take over in a few years. That type of set-up has worked well for your BB program. Bring in washed up daddy to coach and turn the program over to one of his sons in a few years. Before long they’ll start calling you “Sucker U” for falling for these washed up coaches who sell you into thinking there going to turn you into something.

ECU,
It would be fun to play you and even up the score. I liked Ruffin and I am happy for him and wish him well! There are no hard feelings on my part. It looks like it worked out good for him and us both.

I really cant believe that there are this many angry fans in lubbock. I have an idea, why dont you meanies take that mad energy, grab some sort of road repairing tool and head for 34th street. That frightening amount of energy could be used for the betterment of our fine city rather than trying to beat me down to the ground with a blunt instrument and proceeding to kick the life out of me and then setting my carcass on fire. Somebody needs anger management, and fast before you blow something out your bunghole.
