Tech reports recruiting violations

Texas Tech filed a report with the NCAA in the summer of 2009, acknowledging violations in three sports, including football, of the NCAA’s ban on text-messaging recruits.

Tech has already self-imposed penalties in football that included giving up one scholarship for 2010 and reducing the number of campus visits to four fewer recruits than the program’s average over the last four years. New Tech coach Tommy Tuberville recruited under those restrictions in the month leading up to Wednesday’s national signing day.

The case remains open with the NCAA, which could accept Tech’s self-imposed punishment or add sanctions.

Tech faculty representative Brian Shannon, who has communicated with NCAA and Big 12 Conference officials regarding the case, said the violations involved two coaches in men’s golf, three former coaches in softball and “quite a few” football coaches, which he then estimated to be about 10.

“I don’t know what the NCAA is ultimately going to conclude on this,” said Shannon, a Tech law professor.

Tech athletic director Gerald Myers referred most questions about the case to Shannon, who said the irregularities were uncovered last
February by Tech’s athletic compliance staff in a routine review of phone records. After an internal investigation, Tech sent a lengthy report to the NCAA and the Big 12 in July that included the self-imposed penalties.

“A lot of things in the report identified mitigating factors,’’ Shannon said. “Of course, the NCAA is the ultimate decision maker.’’

Shannon said he hasn’t been given a time frame for a resolution.

“The process, I am learning, is not really fast,” he said. “We reported it. We imposed some self-imposed penalties. Most of those have already been served.”

After being contacted by the Avalanche-Journal, Tech released a statement reiterating its commitment to internal reviews of NCAA regulations.

“Texas Tech remains committed to compliance with NCAA rules,” president Guy Bailey said in the press release.

Text-messaging recruits was banned in August 2007 after high school students complained that incessant text messages from college coaches cost them personal time and money because of increased cell-phone charges.

Initially, 34 schools called for the ban to be overturned, but it was upheld at the NCAA convention in January 2008.

Asked to what extent the investigation might have played in the firing of former Tech coach Mike Leach on Dec. 30, Myers said, “None.”

Shannon said nearly all the football coaches involved no longer work for Tech. From Leach’s staff, offensive line coach Matt Moore was the only on-field assistant that Tuberville retained. Shannon said he believed Moore had sent “about four” text messages after the ban.

Former Tech defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill was hired as head coach at East Carolina, and he subsequently took four of Leach’s former assistants with him. Two Leach assistants retired and special teams coach Eric Russell landed a job at Tennessee.

McNeill interviewed to be the Red Raiders’ head coach after Leach was fired.

Asked whether the pending case played a role in the decision to hire Tuberville rather than retain the majority of last year’s staff, Myers said, “No, because I didn’t even know (an estimated 10 football coaches) were involved until you mentioned it. Somebody might have (sent only) one text message, but no.”

Tuberville was hired on Jan. 9.

“I told him that this was ongoing,” Myers said. “I don’t know exactly when I told him. I told him early, though. He didn’t seem to be bothered by it.”

One penalty involved the restriction on the number of recruits that could be accorded paid campus visits.

The NCAA limits campus visits to 56 recruits per year. Tech had been averaging 44 visitors a year the last four years, Shannon said, and volunteered to cap visits at 40 for the recruiting year that just ended this week. A self-imposed penalty of 48 visits, for example, might be viewed as no penalty at all with Tech normally not approaching the limit of 56.

“I think the intent was to show that this was a reduction,” Shannon said.

He said “comparable” sanctions have been self-imposed on men’s golf and softball. He said each team will give up a fraction of one scholarship and “some limitation or reduction in official paid visits in both.”

Former Tech softball coach Teresa Wilson left in October 2008 and was followed for one season by former Tech assistant Amy Suiter.
Shannon said the three sports were the only ones found to have the irregularities.

“The review was tied to looking at phone records,” Shannon said. “No violations were discovered in any of the other 14 sports.”

You are not in a position to know anything about Kid James medical condition. I doubt very much if you are a medical doctor either. Many athletes have died from brain injuries. Coaches are not doctors. Leach has said his orders for the shed were intended to be both a punishment and treatment. This alone was not the cause of him being fired.

You left out withholding support of our new coach ! I assume you have no excuse or explanation for this.

How about , Lets give the media credit for FAILING to report the facts. Lets also give them credit for reporting
the story in such a way as to absolve Hance & the Board of Rodents of any guilt or blame for the PR disas-
    ter they created.

There has been one & only one mention of this PR debacle. It was generated by Coach T-ville, immed-
iately after his hiring when he stated he hoped to get all the fans back on board.

Mighty interesting to me that the TTU community can be dismembered to this extent, & no one in the local
media deems it newsworthy. Do you reckon they’ll be doing articles next fall questioning our loyalty, “Are
the fans going to show up”? Film at 10. Will they set-up in the Mall to interview passers-by? How many TTU
football games are you accustomed to attending sir? Will you be showing up to tailgate & support the team
    this year?

Stipulate that Leach is guilty as Hell.
Stipulate that Adam & Daddy Jms are guilty as Hell.
Stipulate that espn committed no wrong.

Now explain, with facts, how we are where we are.

Someones rank had out-paced their ability………….BINGO……..YOU WIN THE PRIZE!!!!

    KENT HANCE IS A DUNDERHEAD!!!

Yes, ladies & gentlemen, he has out politicked, out ranked, out moneyed, out maneuvered, his way into the
job of TTU Chancellor, only to demonstrate, to the entire nation, his inability to solve complex issues discretely.

This was clearly, only a well televised PISSIN’ contest between Hance & Leach. Hance thought he won when
he convinced the Board of Rodents to terminate Leach. That Hance or the BoR lacked the foresight to under-
stand the backlash they were about to experience is infuriating. This obviously establishes his lack of suitability
for his current position. Hance has done unfathomable damage to TTU, the likes of which we will only begin to
understand next fall when football season begins. espn already has all but dropped TTU off their radar, I am
told. I refuse to watch espn therefor I am unable to corroborate.

Only one course of action remains, Kent Hance should RESIGN immediately from his post as TTU Chancellor.
We’re waiting Kent, getting a little impatient, I might add. Actions have consequences. Your clumsiness &
crudeness are evident to all, excepting your inner-circle of course. Leave your “ivory tower”, listen to the majority
Kent. We are your judge & jury & we find you guilty. Guilty of misuse of your office. Did you have a personal ven-

You won’t find a school in the nation that doesn’t do this to some extent, plus other more serious infractions. It’s all about hiding it. Many years ago Tech had an all conference LB who would get phone calls from an unidentified source giving him answers to tests.
The NCAA is a joke. It takes eons for them to complete investigations and impose sanctions. Many times the sanctions affect players who were in HS at the time of the infraction. Coaches often move on before the sanctions are determined.

If the NCAA is serious about infractions, sanctions must be levied quickly and should follow coaches who try to run from them. I don’t believe this one will cost Tech much, if anything more.

Had he been put back on the field, and risked being hit in the head again, that would have been dangerous. See all available medical reports, research and advice by physicians who treat head injuries.

Also drinking alcohol at anytime just before or after the head injury is detrimental.

Last time I heard NO ONE said Coach Leach put Adam James back on the field, in danger or forced him to drink alcohol.

I guess those that desire to completely believe in “the law” might be shocked to discover that “guidelines” of what will be allowed in as evidence (on BOTH sides) can and usually is determined BEFORE the trial begins–not an “unconditional disclosure” as many might believe. Just like the many prior convictions of a man for DWI (many out of state, though) in the injury of a 2 yr old boy after the man’s F-250 rear-ended the smaller car the boy and his family were in in Arlington. Kid in a legal car seat, in the rear seat of the car, seat-belted in. The rear license plate of the car was basically where the front seat seat backs were! All prior convictions were disallowed as they were misdemeanors, by the local judge.

To me, the NCAA sometimes seems waaayyyyy behind the curve in legislating how schools can contact athletic prospects. THEY should have made texting of the recruits illegal before it became an issue–period, not afterward. Did the recruits’ cell phone text charges get reimbursed to them?????

That Myers seems to have a little knowledge about the texting issue, but not apparently any specifics, again proves how he’s delegating things HE should be keeping better tabs on OR being more personally involved–period! He admits to knowing enough about it to inquire with Tuberville about it, but is that the limit of his knowledge of the issue, as AD?????

Tuberville has a fence-mending job to do, although the people he now works for destroyed the fence. There will be some Red Raider football fans that will support the team because it’s Texas Tech, rather than who the coach is. If the coach made fantastic strides forward and upward, as Leach did, so much the better for everybody (including university coffers!!!). For the others, they have “options” and know it, and will probably exercise them in the coming season. If they like what they see, they’ll stay, but they will leave as quickly as they came, especially after the handling of the Adam James Affair resulted in their favored and winning coach being fired, not for “mistreatment of a player”, but “mistreatment of a father who was acting like a ‘little league baseball father’ rather than an adult reacting to an “adult child”. The fact that nobody, other than Leach, seemed to recognize the “Little League Parent Syndrom” also tends to indicate just how out of touch the Texas Tech Administration and Board of Regents really are!!!!!

Yep, Support Tuberville because he’s tne new coach at Texas Tech Football. That’s all we have to do to hopefully continue the winning ways of what Mike Leach brought to Texas Tech with consistency–a consistency that eludes prior coachs for decades. Mike Leach did much to elevate Texas Tech Football to the national level it suddenly found itself in when the prior SWC was disbanded–a conference that was Big In Texas, but had little prestige anywhere else, seemingly. Mike Leach got Tech “respect” that was not short-lived in the “Big Boy” Big 12 conference, as it might have been under a different or more traditional coach, back then. Possibly, the Leach Legacy will continue to be Tuberville’s stepping stone to bigger and better things, although with many new coaches and more emphasis on certain strategies he brings with him.

To me, the fact that the key coaches in Leach’s team administrations have landed in “step up” coaching positions, they’ll spread the Leach Magic to other schools with football programs that are in need of building toward greater levels of greatness. Plus, it also indicates the many positives of what Mike Leach did FOR and at Texas Tech, although ONE IRATE “Little League Baseball Father” had issues with his own son’s “time in the limelight”–a father that obviously didn’t get any satisfaction with the Adults on the Tech Football Staff, so he went over their heads to a member of the Tech Board of Regents before somebody would listen to him . . . and act . . . at the perceived threat of a lawsuit if they did not do “something” to investigate the situation that suddenly went from an ant mound to the Rocky Mountains in size. Rather than stand behind an employee, the Tech Regents and Administration chose the wrong person to believe, although an IMPARTIAL inquiry would have been necessary to comply with the request.

Instead of an “impartial inquiry”, things went just the other way. The “complainer” got the benefit of the doubt, if there might have been one, as the inquiry was obviously greatly mis-handled by Tech’s operatives and administrators. Suddenly, the Tech Employee was “the bad guy” when that was not completely the case as it seems that an underperforming player might have been having issues with trying to admit that he didn’t like college-level sports (as his father was trying to make him like, after his father might well have motivated his son to greatness while he was in high school, at home, where he had control of what his son did or thought about) . . . which might well have fueled the son’s reported mediocre performance in Tech sports. Some kids and parents seem to forget that, although you might have been a “big cheese” in high school sports, when you get to the university level, there will be others that are more motivated and more capable of besting your prior best performances as “the slate is wiped clean” regarding past accomplishments and things start anew.

And then there were the University employees that suddenly started jockeying for position as they saw Leach’s ship being fired at. THAT proves their lack of professionalism and that they might need to wipe something from the outside of their noses. Trying to save their job, look good in the eyes of the Tech administration as “expert witnesses” with corroborating evidence, or whatever? Not to leave out the role in the AJ in its’ “reporting” role of the whole thing, either!

Certainly, we need to follow the lead of Ruffin and others who have moved onward and forward to greater things in their careers and life. We might not like the manner in which that happened . . . and WHY . . . but it’s happened for them and also for the schools they now work for–a better placed to be. We can’t change history. Leach will most probably not be back at Tech as football coach anytime soon–nothing we can do about it now–but we CAN thank him for what he did, remember his legacy and his contribution to Texas Tech Football History as NO Texas Tech Administrator or operative can change that history.

Still, the actions of Texas Tech administrators have been completely “wrong” in orientation, action, and content. Similar for the Board of Regents who might have been involved in the situation. For these indiscretions, their job performance can’t be deemed acceptable . . . “You’re Fired!” These operatives can possibly save face by openly supporting Kay Bailey H. or Medina for Texas Governor, though.

    Regards,
    MB74

I think it was up to 8 scholarships in football in the first year and tapering off over 4-5yrs each year after. That is pretty hefty. The football programs penalties were in affect up until 2003. The fact Leach was successful after inheriting the Tech penalties is just another testament of his abilities to do more with less. I think if you asked 50 people about those violations, you may be lucky to find a single one that knew they existed.

If he brings in the dollars, he should stay. If he doesn’t, find someone who can. That’s what he should be judged on; not whether he fairly or unfairly fired a football coach who’s job it was to keep us entertained.

And you feel if Hance brings in the money no matter what he should remain?
    How about corruption, Judge?

Wonder if this is why TT did not keep more of the coaching staff.

On the Texas Tech Athletic site there is a whole list of staff ( I think 6) whose job is to assist in keeping TTU in compliance with the NCAA. A lot is geared to the student athlete. The question is who is supposed to helping and watching the Coaches.

I think Tech makes a better effort to stay in compliance then most places. It is almost impossible not to be doing something wrong. When you receive an athletic scholarship from an NCAA school it is like signing your life away into the hands of others for 4-5 years. Coaches, Schools, and the NCAA make tons of money from athletics and use the athletes. Investigate the NCAA!

Leach and his attorneys can’t be happy! We will see a settlement quickly and NOT for what Leach anticipated.

The hint of violations under the Leach regime will be cost him money and force him to settle for less. I’m sure there are numerous skeletons in the Leach closet, just not those of his stupid Pirates!

Personally I like Tuberville. If you want to look at the biggest problem he had at Auburn, look at Nov 24, 2008. When you lose to Alabama 36-0, you get fired from Auburn. This wasn’t againt the National Champ team either. But he was trying to implement a spread style offense (similar to Leach’s) during a year they had injury issues and also had just lost a few players to the NFL. Still, losing 0-36 against Alabama would’ve have resulted in Pat Dye getting fired years earlier.

As for the James/Leach issue … I always feel sorry for those who want to report on the dangers of concussions and look at the James/Leach incident as proof that coaches don’t have a clue. A US congressman (John Conyers, D-Mich) wanted the incident ivestigated and said the proper thing to do is send a player for medical evaluation or to a hospital. Many agree.

The problem is they think, based on the reporting, that Adam James suffered the concussion in the same practice he was punished as opposed to two (or three depending on which story) days earlier. For minor concussions, players are still expected to show up in team attire and do light work. James showed up in street clothes and sunglasses and complained about having to WALK around the track. But if you take the facts mixed with the way the congressman from Michigan wants things done, any player receiving any level of concussion should be hospitalized for days.

Frankly the whole phone video posted on youtube smacks of an attempt to go after Leach. Whether or not Craig James was in on it and encouraged Adam to do just that, I won’t speculate.

It will be interesting to hear what comes out of the trial. It probably would have been easier for Tech to just pay Leach and move on. This trial will likely cost them recruits, money (lawyers and court fees), near term success, and bowl money for years to come. Given the e-mail trail from last year where members of the Board of Regents all but said they’d find a reason to fire Leach before the $800K was due, Tech may still have to pay him … and lose a lot of face on top of that.

As for the texting issue … read up on it. It’s not that Tech contacted these players outside of allowed contact periods. Texting was banned by the NCAA b/c highschool athletes were complaining about the text fees. It’s that refusal to see the gray areas that defines the NCAA. Frankly a lot of student athletes have unlimited texting and may prefer to be contacted that way. No player complained about these text messages. It was found out when the school reviewed phone records. However, the NCAA – in their infinite wisdom – do not allow for players to specify that they’d prefer receiving text messages. Most teenagers these days will respond to a text message much faster than a voice mail (which is still legal) or an e-mail. That’s a fact of life in this day and age.

So if you want to believe TT coaches are cheaters based on this ridiculous infraction and that they should face stiffer punishment, then the SMU football program should still be under the death penalty that was imposed for actions that occurred when Craig James was playing there.

Move on. If you’re a Tech fan, support Tuberville. He’s the teams coach and the team is more the face of the school than the chancellor. He wasn’t hired in order to fire Leach, he was hired because Leach was already fired. That was never going to be undone.

Kent Hance blew this thing up. There was no reason to do it except to find a way to fire Leach. “All (Leach) had to do was sign a letter of apology…” said Hance. That right there proves he was a dunderhead. He wanted Leach to a.) apologize for something he didn’t do; b.) put it in writing; c.) leave himself AND the University open for liable by doing so. I believe that Hance & Meyers need to go. They are an embarrasment. I don’t think Leach was a saint, but I do believe that, as a lawyer, he would not purposely put himself in a position to be sued. The idiotic way this whole thing was handled is a testament to Meyers’ incompitency & Hance’s stupidity. As for reporting on the NCAA violations…. it really would have been nice to see the same effort to report what really happened that fateful day in December. Its hard to believe that Don Williams is CYA-ing for Hance & Meyers, but it sure looks that way!

As for supporting the Red Raiders…. well, I for one find it very hard to get excited by the present situation. At one time there looked to be a small modicum of respect for TTU starting to blossom around the nation. Now, thanks to Hance, Meyers, Adam & Craig James, and ESPN we are the laughing stock. Its hard to root for the laughing stock. If Tuberville does any good, it will be because Leach left him the core of a great team. It will be years before we can get over this. Sad. Very sad.

So I just read Hance’s “thumbnail scketch” of the incident. Are you kidding me?? Hance really thinks they did “all they could do”??? This is one classic case of wrong end of the horse doing the thinking!! I’m sorry that you were “cussed out” Mr. Hance, but I can imagine that most of the things Leach said about you were true. As far as I can see with your story, its seems as if you don’t even know half the things I KNOW about the incident!!! Not even HALF Mr. Hance!!!!!! How can you say that you really did all you could do??????

Don I have to say that your story is at best ill-timed if not totally unnessicary!

Therefore the local media will not bite the hand that feeds them. They will cower and bow to the powers that be.
