Tech golf finishes seventh in first spring tournament

Texas Tech wrapped up the inaugural tournament of the spring season with a seventh-place finish at the Mauna Lani Invitational in Kohala Coast, Hawai’i, Friday. The No. 19 Red Raiders finished ahead of Nos. 4, 6, and 7, in a 22-team field that included six top ten programs.

The Red Raiders began the third round in a seventh-place tie and held onto the spot after carding a 1-under 287 Friday. Chris Ward fired a 2-under 70 to lead three players at par or better. Nils Floren bounced back with a final-round 72 after shooting a 77 in the second round and falling out of a first-place tie. Floren finished in a 19th-place tie, while Ward was close behind tied in 21st place.

Six of the nation’s top 10 players were among the field, including Floren, who entered the event at No. 7. He finished ahead of the nation’s Nos. 1, 2 and 5 players.

Stanford won the team title by three strokes.
