Tuberville aimed for more defense in signing first class for Tech
Texas Tech football coaches used to be accused of recruiting for offense at the expense of defense.
Not anymore. Not with Tommy Tuberville in charge.
The Red Raiders reeled in 22 new players Wednesday, the first day of college football’s national signing period, 16 of whom come from the defensive side. Add in three mid-term signees, and the numbers are seven on offense and 18 defense.
“There’s a reason for that: We need more defensive players,” Tuberville said, noting he inherited 27 scholarship players on defense and 31 on offense. “The one area that we really needed players was defensive linemen, and we signed eight. I’ve told people for years: You can throw (recruiting star rankings) all out, and grade the defensive linemen that you recruited. And if they’re good football players, you’re going to win more games.

Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville has the Red Raiders turning the page. He pulled in a signing class Wednesday with a heavy emphasis on defense. (Zach Long/Avalanche-Journal)
“Every player is valuable, but it’s so hard to find defensive players that can play defensive line, that can run and play major-college football. So we went after an abundance of them.”
Tuberville also made it clear he puts a premium on off-field character and speed.
“This entire team will be built on speed as long as I’m here,” he said. “Speed will win games for us. I don’t look at the height. I don’t look at the weight. I look at how fast they can run and how quick they are. If they have a couple of those qualities, this football team will get better and better.”
On paper, at least, defensive coordinator James Willis got a windfall of eight new defensive linemen, three linebackers and perhaps as many as seven defensive backs, depending on how the Raiders decide to use two-way Miami, Fla., signee Lavaughn Whigham.
The disparity wasn’t totally by design. Late in the game, the Raiders got some favorable breaks with defensive recruits and two defections from offensive players.
Defensive backs Urell Johnson and Tre’Vante Porter, who looked at other schools after the Dec. 30 firing of Mike Leach, ultimately returned to the Tech fold. And on signing day, the Raiders pulled Aldine Eisenhower linebacker Cqulin Hubert away from a commitment to Iowa State and signed previously uncommitted defensive end Lawrence Cayou from New Orleans.
The tilt toward defense notwithstanding, the new staff held on to the most high-profile recruit that Leach had attracted: Parade Magazine all-America quarterback Scotty Young from Denton Ryan.
Even Young had to pass muster with offensive coordinator Neal Brown, Tuberville said, as the new staff did its own evaluations. But after checking out Young, Tuberville said they saw what Leach saw.
“I like his release, I like the way he gets rid of the football, and he’s very competitive, which is a very good attribute for a college quarterback to have,” Tuberville said. “Just visiting with him, he’s a very mature young man that I think will be a heck of a quarterback for us.”
The day started on a down note, though, when highly sought wide receiver Kadron Boone signed with LSU. The Ocala, Fla., star made a non-binding oral commitment to Tech in August. But when Leach was fired, Boone began looking elsewhere.
“They did a great job,’’ Trinity Catholic coach John Brantley said of Tech’s staff. “He had built up a great relationship with coach Leach. It’s not that he lost interest, but (Tech’s passing offense) is what caught his attention. That’s what got him interested in Texas Tech to begin with. Once that happened, he put his thought processes elsewhere.’’
Boone is ranked among the nation’s top 150 recruits by ESPN.com and Rivals.com.
He toured Tech in early September, then spent January taking his maximum number of official visits to check out other schools: Georgia, Louisville, West Virginia and, last weekend, LSU.
“Wherever you go last, that tends to be the place you remember,’’ Brantley said.
Tech also lost offensive lineman Eric Lawson from Olive Branch, Miss., to Mississippi State.
While those two were leaving the Tech class, new arrivals were replacing them.
Hubert, a first-team all-District 19-5A selection the last two years, visited Tech over the weekend and signed with the Red Raiders on Wednesday.
“He’s good sized, and he can run,’’ said Eisenhower coach Ray Evans, adding that Hubert is 6-foot-3 and in the 230- to 235-pound range. “We played him down at defensive end last year, then about midseason last year we put him at outside linebacker, because he can drop back and cover. He can run you down. He can cover a lot of ground.’’
Cayou is another intriguing prospect, coming off a senior season with 17 sacks.
New defensive coordinator James Willis called Cayou a steal and a diamond in the rough.
“He possesses a combination of speed and size that is very rare and hard to find,” Willis said.
Something Leach’s staff had been doing that Tuberville’s will keep doing is recruiting Florida. Tech landed four players from there: Miami Southridge defensive backs Phillip Warren and Whigham, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons wide receiver Shawn Corker and Lakeland inside receiver Ben McRoy.
Tuberville said he has spent much of his career recruiting in Florida. He believes there is so much talent in the state that, inevitably, many good prospects fall through the cracks. Warren, for example, doesn’t even have a Rivals.com star ranking, but Tuberville singled him out as a player who deserved more recruiting attention.
Tuberville said Warren has marginal speed for a cornerback — he estimated in the 4.5- to 4.6-second range — but he loved his football smarts.
“He kind of reminds me of a kid I coached that’s a rookie this year with the Indianapolis Colts named Jerraud Powers,’’ Tuberville said. “Same size. Same makeup. Same build. And he’s very knowledgeable of the game, and he loves to play. I think he has a great chance.’’
Tech’s holding on to McRoy was doubly significant because his younger brother, Javares McRoy, is considered one of the top wide receiver prospects in the nation for next year. The McRoy brothers have indicated a desire to go to the same school.
Eleven in-state prospects also were signed, including Young and Southlake Carroll defensive end Jackson Richards, both members of The Avalanche-Journal Fabulous 44 list of Texas’ top recruits, and Round Rock Stony Point defensive back Desmond Martin, a member of the A-J state Top 100.
While Tech lost a couple of out-of-state recruits perhaps to the coaching change, Tuberville pulled in two out-of-state defensive backs who had wavered. Urell Johnson from New Orleans Walker looked at Colorado and Illinois after the Leach firing, and Porter from Carl Albert High School in Midwest City, Okla., re-opened his recruitment, attracting an offer from Oklahoma and a final-weekend visit invitation from Arizona.
But Johnson and Porter ultimately stuck with Tech. So did linebacker Joe Carmical from Monticello, Ark., running back Delans Griffin from Clinton, Okla., and defensive back Brandon Smith from Raceland, La., Central Lafourche.
Tuberville said some of the new defensive backs could play next season.
“It’s not that difficult to play corner on this level as a freshman,” he said, “as long as you don’t make it too difficult.”
The Red Raiders were hoping to add some late sizzle to the class by picking off some more out-of-state recruits. But linebacker Darrin Kitchens chose Florida, defensive end J.R. Ferguson opted for LSU and running back Lucky Radley signed with Utah.

How true. And let’s remember that LSU is a school filled to the brim with talent including other very talented receivers. This kid might get lost in the shuffle.

Bad decision….. Poor guy will regret that one.

You really can’t blame the kid for looking around. The reason he came here was for Coach Leach and his offense. Now that he is gone, there are no guarantees.
And you cannot blame Tuberville for this loss. The kid just re-examined his options. If Mike had never been fired but took another job, say Tennesse, this kid still would have re-examined his options and probably gone elsewhere.
Don’t blame the kid or Tuberville. Blame the administration for that December fiasco and the James family for starting it.
I guess Mike could be blamed for giving the little pr*ck a scholarship and then being foolish enough to take his punk ass father’s calls. From Day 1, When Craig James called, Mike should have told him to FO when it game to his coaching.

Let’s also keep in mind that while this kid has talent, how talented is he that Florida, Miami, and Florida State weren’t interested in a Florida HS player?

Kadron missed a chance to pair with Scotty Young and be part of the next Harrell-Crabtree combo. Now he will get lost in the masses at LSU. So if he had visited Tech last he would have signed here? I wonder if he even met all of our coaches? And I appreciate him stringing us along, if he already knew. That probably kept other receivers from signing here. What an ego! Just had to get a bit more media attention. Thanks alot.

K. Boone was a tough loss along with about 5 others we have lost. Tech has gone from 24th in recruiting to 43rd. We are behind Baylor which is 39th. I am not sure TT and the staff have done a great job keeping our top recruits. Look at the job Tennessee is doing- Kiffin left late to go to USC -the recruits were shocked and Coach Dooley has a top 10 recruiting class. He was able to sell himself and the program. TT has not had the same success.

The Harrell-Crabtree was refined and defined by Coach Mike Leach, even if Kadron had come and paired up with S Young, he wouldn’t have had the advantage of the football genius of Leach and thus the combo would NOT have been the same, Kadron probably realized this!

Very “wishy washy” to say the least.
It’s okay, Tech has a stable of young receivers. This is just part of the reprucissions that come with a sudden coaching change. Looks like we’re still keeping a sleugh of our other talent though. Stay positive, it will be a long day.
Looking forward to the 3pm press conference.

In all likelyhood, Boone would have probably second guessed himself even if Leach was still at Tech. Kids are fickle and most want to go to a proven big name school. They told him the offense was staying the same. Tech made a leap up in quality of the coach so if he really wanted to go to Tech he would have. I think he probably was in termoil about his desicion way back when he gave his verbal. No big loss. Tuberville already anticipated his not signing and so went and landed the speedster from Florida in Whigham.

I don’t blame the kid for going elsewhere. He had a lot of options that were WAY closer to home and there were some serious questions about the offense. We are still stacked at all of our skill positions for the years to come. I wish him the best of luck.

Losing Boone is not the end of the world. Receiver is one position on the team where we have plenty of depth over the next few years…Eric Ward, E.J. Celeste, Aaron Fisher, Zouzalik, Franks, etc. Then add on this year’s class with Corker, Whigham, and McRoy…plus we likely will get McRoy’s brother next year (Javares). Yeah it would have been nice to keep Boone, but it’s not a huge loss.

He wouldn’t have went to LSU if you wouldn’t have oppened the door. You have to remember this kid would probably have been a 5* WR if he had not torn his ACL his 10th grade year. By the time he reports to LSU he would have run 10.5 in the 100M(ran 10.7 last year) and will probably measure out to 6′ 1.5″ 210lbs. He’s a great kid with unbelievable work ethic. Don’t blame the kid Tech. fans, if you want to be a bigtime program then you have to act like a bigtime program. Act like you are in the Big 12 and not the Mountain West. Fl Boy,
Your post is not the same as the pressers from the recruiting services. In fact, on the Florida HS video presser, it had Boone talking to Florida and hoping for an offer from the Gators in early December. That does not sound like a kid who was solid on Tech prior to the Leach situation. His status with Rivals was never “solid verbal” but only “soft verbal.” Boone took every one of his official visits after verbally committing to TTU. He was looking for the best fit for him. I do not fault the kid but I definitely do not think that he was a solid Red Raider until the Leach situation.

Nice rationalization HouRedRaider. Just keep thinking second tier. That will get us along way down the road. The fact is that the Leach Offense’s noteriety got us a chance to sign a top tier athlete from outside the region and the new coaches reputation was not enough to carry the day. This kid what most rational people do, when faced with turmoil and uncertainty, he chose the safest option. You may also notice that he did not choose U of FL which was probably his second choice because of the uncertainty there with Urban Myer.

Not a Team Leacher but I only have to point to one big game that refutes your argument. Can you say 39-33? Also, there were any number of great wins prior to that season that helped with recruiting which allowed us to rise to #2 in the nation after the Texas victory. I think if the cards fall into place, Coach Tuberville can get us to that level consistently. I hope this recruiting class helps in that regard. TT had very little success at AU with the spread for several reasons. Some of it was out of his control and some of it was his tweaking of a proven system.
The new OC had success at Troy with the spread. A compilation of stats during his two OC years show a 55/45% pass/run mix. Under ML, Tech had just shy of a 70/30 pass/run mix.
After watching a number of Troy game films, the passing game resembles Tech’s scheme. However, the increase in running game resulted in lower points per game by approximately 10 on average. I anticipate Tech’s scoring average will also decline by 7-12 points per game. We’ll see more 30 point games in the future. As long as the defense improves, we’ll be ok. If it doesn’t. look for more 6-6 & 7-5 seasons.

Tuberville’s here and we must support him as best we can. He is a proven winner. If he does it here remains to be seen.
We have an administration problem that must be taken care of if we expect this University to move to the next level in athletics and academics. We need some Big Time Administration.
Athletically, in recent years FB has been the most successful. Top Schools with Top ADs and Top Administration are successful in most areas. For those of you who want to say when did we ever have a top class coming in….Really Never!
But before the storm it looked like we were primed to haveone, Leach and staff were making progress in recruiting on the heels of the 2008 campaign, which all have to agree was excellent…Now Tuberville is basically starting over and to no fault of his own has a different philosophy that may prove to be more of a winner…right now we just don’t know. But why tie the hands of the success of the university with a second rate set of administrators?

Agreed. The vocal minority wants Tuberville to fail and so use anything they can hang their hats on to back up their wants. Here’s the truth about why the spread didn’t work out for Tuberville at Auburn. He lost his spread quarterback to injury, he didn’t have the buy in from his own coaching staff on the new offensive scheme (he should have replaced most of the offensive staff instead of just the coordinator), and he did not have the buy in of the Auburn boosters who were accustomed to the run game and didn’t want to change. He was fired for the same reason as Coach Leach – big money wanted him gone. Simple as that.

What is a real shame here with Kadron Boone, is that LSU is not a pass happy school, really. The like to run the ball more and Boone wont get the chance to really Star at receiver like he would have here at Tech. His reason for changing was due to the problem that he thinks the new coaching staff at Tech will opt out of the Air Raid offense to a more rushing one. Only thing is, he is sadly mistaken.
Its all good though because Tech is getting the right recruits in the right places and we are going to be good at the Receiver spot anyway, plus there is always next year, to where everyone will know what Tech’s offense will really be like and Tech can build from that point on.
By the way, a little F.Y.I. for all of you out there. With a couple winning seasons I think all the whinny hinnys will be on board and coach will double his salary within 6 to 7 yrs.
Recruiting? Man for all we been thru we gotta say we scored 90+ (with a curve for all the bs and what it couldve been)! We are already somethin like #37 with Rivals and if we get JR Ferguson at DE we will jump into around #29 or #30. It may be a liitle bit of an off yr for us, but look at what youre saying. Off yr we go # 30 or so in recruiting when 10 yrs ago an off yr was #60!! Think of it – we’ve come a long way baby!
Recruiting is built over a 5-6 yr plan and you can have an off yr without too much of a problem. I think coach was very smart in going after the defense this yr as the d line is an immediate need and the d bkfield need was definitely filled. Travante Porter will be NFL in 3 to 4 yrs! We will now have the d-backs to play against the other spreads coming our way. Now just gotta work on the line backer quality to go BCS. And hopefully Delans Griffin qualifies and gets here asap and Scott Smith!!!
Great great great year for all thats been done.
Welcome to Raiderland guys. We need you – we love you – tonite’s the nite! Party on!!!

question on LOIs. Is Today the first day they can sign. Rivals is reporting Smith HAS SIGNED. Are you saying he signed in December then never showed up? Or did he just give a verbal in December then not show up? This is what I am reading on rivals: “he planned on signing with Texas Tech but had not yet faxed in his National Letter of Intent. That situation has changed”.

I just checked rivals.com and their list of recruiting team rankings. We have dropped to #44. Every Big 12 South team is ranked above us. I’m disappointed and more than a little worried. I know rankings arent everything but I hope that the new staff can find a way to win with less talent. We used to have a niche where we could recruit with the best based on our offensive style. Obviously we lost our niche. Still hoping for the best. Time will tell.

Tech #44………ECU #79 Tech still made the best pick over Ruffin
Report this comment
Dear ECURocks…. Ruff is a good man, and probably would have kept the recruiting class in tact.
Then he would have plugged them into an average defense with average defensive schemes.
He would still allow us to get run out of the house most years against any team with a running QB.
(Example: Houston… Texas A&M… Texas)
Best of luch at ECU Ruff…. but Tuberville is going to BRING IT!!!
What conference is ECU in? The question is would Tech have done better with McNeal over Tuberville. The early projections were we would have, but we really don’t know.
I support Tuberville, but you simply can’t say the right choice was made because we have a better recruting class then ECU…That doesn’t make any sense.
This recruiting garbage doesn’t mean that much in reality, anyways. Some schools are very successful and rarely have a Top 20 recruiting class. Bigger issues surrounding Tech right now!!!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion jimmy. What confernce is ECU in? Where are they in the rankings of their conference? Are they last in their division? I seriously doubt it.

As I understand it, he signed his letter of intent last semester but, due to the coaching change did not enroll at Tech for the spring semester as he originally intended. There was talk he might ask the NCAA to let him out of that letter of intent because of the unexpected coaching change. As far as I know there has been no further word on his status. Maybe we’ll hear something today.

Ruffin is a great motivator…not so good with the X’s and O’s I’m afraid. He was a vast improvement over Lyle Setencich (almost anyone would be), but the defense still had games where they were completely gashed…like A&M this season…and Michigan State, who was missing several key players on offense, still managed to put up 31 points! He rushed 4 and dropped 7 almost every play…not that hard to prepare for.
I can’t imagine Ruffin in his office coming up with a complete game plan and scheming for teams like Texas and Oklahoma. I think he would have been really overmatched as a head coach in the Big 12. Maybe there’s a reason he’s been coaching for 25 years and this is his first head job? Who knows…maybe he would have done well here.
But I really liked him and was sad to see him go. He’ll do well at East Carolina. It’s going to be like watching Tech of old with Lincoln Riley there too running the familiar “Air Raid” offense.

One interesting omission (not literally, but techncally) is that there’s little press about a kid from the Houston area that had interest thrown his way by several passing schools, including a few scholarships. His name is Brent Mitcham. He accepted a “preferred-status” walk-on spot over several scholarships (including Northwestern – which is not mentioned on Rivals100) and should be the next “elf” (even though my source who heavily assisted in maintaining his interest in Tech after Leach leaving thinks he plays like Wes Welker in person and performs as many roles too). For those interested, his film does mirror a hybrid Elf/Welker.

Man, you are making NC look bad with your nonsense. You can love Ruff and also be impressed by who Tubbs is and who he’s brought along to coach. It is not one or the other. There will be an improved overall team representing Tech next year, and let’s not forget that Leach wasn’t that good of a recruiter. He didn’t like recruiting, and our best recruiting years under Leach were his early years (at least according to the Recruiting $ervices).

Techster, while I think this class is definitely Leach’s and could have been a little better given the defections after his dismissal, I wouldn’t say Tuberville’s a loss.
I actually teach at Auburn, and many here, while they love the new staff, routinely state that what has made Auburn great with it’s talent and recruiting is Tuberville (particularly defense). His 5-7 season you tout was not the result of his inability to coach; it’s the result of a mentality here in Auburn against the spread; the same spread that is now going to Ok State and has routinely been touted on these forums as “one reason Tech’s going to be hurting next fall”.
Additionally, if you recall Leach’s attack didn’t fair too much better when he came to Tech his first year. I wouldn’t go bashing Lee or others for seeing potential in our defense; you’re likely to have to eat your words in the future – Tuberville’s defenses have routinely done well in the SEC and his “offspring” have done well in the Big12 (i.e., UT).
wow….
A few points.
1) The pirate did a heck of a job here, no need to bash him. But he was always just here as a stop over. Every season he did well there would be whispers he wanted a bigger stage. So for cripes sake let it go. If not then just follow another team. He’s not here, he isn’t coming back and we all have to move on.
2) Have any of you buffoons crying about this class ranking looked at the previous 5 or 6 years classes? Tech has NEVER recruited top tier classes and when we have the top guys are 50/50 at best. A lot of these guys we are crying about won’t make it past year 1 of the program and a lot of 2 star recruits will be starters in 2 years. Check rivals100.com and sort by past seasons of Tech commits if you doubt that. We have put a number of 2/3 star recruits into the NFL.
3) Tuberville ‘failed’ at Auburn after his offense lost what 4 first rounders in 2 or 3 seasons. He tried to go spread but then lost his only decent spread QB to injury. So, yea he had an awful season all of 2 years after being a top 5 school and winning the SEC.
4) Tuberville can recruit Florida and that’s huge. If you can recruit Texas and Florida you will recruit well. Both places have 2 and 3 star recruits that will end up in the NFL because they are far better football players than they are raw athletes and because not every high school kid is going to 5 or 6 camps in the off-season to shoot up these almost silly rankings.
5) Ruffin was well-liked and seems a genuinely good guy. But he didn’t get the job. ECU boy, there are threads for ECU out there, feel free to find them and enjoy.

by the way. chriss todd was running that offense in the spring of 2008 @ Auburn until he blew out his arm and Tuberville/Franklin had no one who could throw the ball more than the length of the sticks. does not bode well for a first season system transitioning styles. Tuberville knew it and tried to save his job by firing Franklin. It didn’t work.
I WILL SAY THIS. I AM DISGUSTED WITH THE ADMINISTRATION’S HANDLING OF THE LEACH/JAMES SITUATION. But the dogpiling on Tuberville and Co. is getting absolutely rediculous. He hired a Coordinator who had the #4 passing offense int he nation last year while only throwing the ball 55% of the time. And they ran the ball for an averrage of 150 a game. Pretty damn good if you ask me, and I know it was in the sun belt but give the guy a damn chance. And Tuberville also hired Willis, who Nick Saban proclaimed to be his most trusted assistant on a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP club.
We all Love Tech. And I will be the first in line to donate to Myers, Hance, and Bailey’s (and Alberto Gonzalez’s for that matter) moving van fund!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But we must support Tuberville and Co. before we all look like total jackasses turning on our school……….We lost Boone, disappointing but not the end of the damn world. We have depth at WR. And more help coming. Does anyone realize that the QB can’t throw the ball to a WR if he is on his back??????? Start where it counts. On both lines, and Tuberville & Co. are addressing this.
Lasty, i have a few friends who are Aggies, (you do too) and they all wanted Tuberville last year over sherman. we should feel lucky that he was available. please give the man a chance. DON’T STOP IN YOUR DEMAND FOR ANSWERS AND HEADS ROLLED FROM THE ADMIN, but layoff the Coach, HE DID NOT FIRE MIKE LEACH.

Also look at all the recruits T. Robinson has been involved in getting. That is what these kids want more than a chance at Championships, the opportunity to play in the NFL and make the loot. period. we have guys inplace that have done that on the defensive side of the ball now. THAT IS EXCITING. And we have 4 kids signed from Florida, that is huge!!! I think the hires Tuberville has made so far have been shrewd. And they will only prosper more as they have a full season to recruit. I am skeptically excited. But I still love Tech no matter what and will not dogpile on Tuberville and Co. before their first spring practice. 2006=#25, 2.88 star avg

so, with the exception of the class of ’06, a 2010 class currently ranked #41 and an avg star rating of 3.0 looks pretty familiar doesn’t it?

Not that I think Rivals is the definitive authority on recruiting classes but I thought it was interesting how Tech’s current class is looking compared to rankings of our past classes. Just for fun, I added A&M’s recruiting classes as well. These are Rivals final rankings for each year:
2010 TT 41 A&M 15 (2010 not final and subject to change pending any future signings)
2009 TT 33 A&M 22
2008 TT 45 A&M 16
2007 TT 52 A&M 43
2006 TT 25 A&M 27
2005 TT 37 A&M 8
2004 TT 33 A&M 13
2003 TT 44 A&M 10
2002 TT 48 A&M 23
Some observations:
1) Tech’s current class ranking is about par for what we’ve come to see from Rivals.
2) A&M has supposedly out recruited us 8 out of the last 9 years. What was our record against them during that time?
3) I remain not impressed by rankings of individual recruits or the class as a whole. If these rankings meant anything, there would be no need to play the games. It looks to me like Tech consistently ends up with a better team than the recruiting rankings suggest while A&M, well. . . doesn’t.
Congrats to the recruits who chose Texas Tech. I hope you exceed all expectations but especially your own.
Here’s to Coach Tuberville and my Texas Tech Red Raiders: May you enjoy tremendous success next season and follow that up with a fantastic recruiting class.

The more I look back on the shakeup of the Tech coaching staff, the happier I am that Tech hired Tuberville to replace Leach. Don’t get me wrong, Leach was great. I loved watching our offense average 400 yards passing and 38 points a game. It’s fun, and there’s no denying that. Tuberville may not want to air it out 50 times a game, but lets not forget that this man still believes in running the spread. Maybe not the “Air Raid” spread, but an offense that is effective and efficient. It’s going to be nice to see a coach that can encourage clock control on offense and an aggressive 3-4 defense. For all of you that are down about our program, I encourage you to just be patient.
You want to beat schools like Texas and Oklahoma on a consistent basis? You better play some defense. I’ll take a 20-17 win over UT (which is completely realistic this fall) over a typical leach-ruffin combo of scoring too quickly and leaving an exhausted Mcneil defense to wear out in the 4th quarter. Even our greatest team this century (2008 squad) needed to have a last second score to beat UT at home. YOU CANT RUN A COVER 2 SHELL DEFENSE AND BEAT THE BIG BOYS. SORRY.

Regardless of how anyone spin s the events of national signing day, Tech has yet again disgraced itself. The inepttitude of the coaches that fell asleep while Boone and Lawson jumpped ship, is only surpassed by the overall despicable performance the coaching staff displayed, as a whole, in Texas. What the hell are we doing spending money in Florida,, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Oklahoma when everyone knows the best football talent in the country is in Texas? It almost appears Tech is too cowardly to take on the big boys, , in our own back yard. Instead we beg for scraps from other states, where there is zero loyalty to Texas Tech, and are surprised when they sign elswhere. We have squandered a decade of unmatched success in football, and now appear destined to start the long slow decent back in to the obscurity inwhich we came. Football is frankly the only viable sport remaining in a once proud athletic program, that has become an embarrassment. Ego’s ,arrogance, and apathy have sealed our fate!

Ken,
You’ll find this interesting, Ferentz at Iowa was having great success a few years ago and they started going after the players based on the star rating instead of how they fit the program…Iowa went from near the top in Big Ten to the second division and last year they returned and he said it was because they went too much for the star rating instead of what they thought of the individual.
My point is this recruiting rating stuff doesn’t really mean as much as it is cracked up for by some.
Iowa incidentally is projected as a Top 5 team in the country next season.
Also, TTU right now is sandwiched between Utah and Iowa, which this past season were two of the Top Teams in the country,, 40,41,42, respectively.
After further review, I like what I see and the approach taken here.

Thank you. It’s nice to see someone with some sense here. Tuberville has done the best he could in a very short amount of time to salvage someone else’s recruiting class. Keep in mind that some of these kids are recruited for up to two years by a coaching staff and in that time develop certain bonds with their recruiters. Tuberville was given less that a month to put together a staff and build relationships with kids that Leach’s staff recruited previously. This class is on par with any previous recruiting class that Leach put together and this is because it is largely made up of kids that were recruited by Leach and his staff over the past couple of years. Tuberville should be judged by next years class.

That’s a good point but our coach is a defensive-minded coach from the SEC. These recruits might be too young to know that he had good defensive teams at Auburn. We’ve been known for offense around here; which only got us 8 to 9 wins a year. If you notice the teams in the Big 12 with SEC style defenses (UT, OU, and Neb); they get all of the best defensive recruits. Tuberville has only been out of the game a year and could only get what was left of the recruits. It doesn’t matter where you go; if you’re any good you’ll go pro no matter what.

Derek Dooley lands a top 10 class and Tommy Tuberville takes a top 25 class and allows it to become a 40′s class. Dooley signed his contract and took over the Tennessee mess and did a fantastic job. On the other hand, Tuberville blew a gift wrapped class handed to him by Mike Leach and his former staff.
It looks like the real salesman is Dooley and Tuberville looks like a con artist who has buffaloed the Texas Tech administration and some naive alumni and fans.

Ok, so you just listed Oklahoma and LSU as successfully running the 2 shell. Two teams that have national championships under their belts, and thus can obtain a specific type of extremely talented recruit to effectively run whatever type of defense they want. How many times did we beat Texas and OU under the Leach-Setenich-Ruffin era? Not nearly as many as we lost. How many outright Big 12 South titles did we obtain from their logic? None. Ruffin did a lot of the same things that Setenich ran, but did it more effectively because of the emotion, intensity and passion he brought to the team. But not even that is enough, obviously.
My entire point was that Tuberville’s philosophy of a balanced attack while playing clock control mixed with an aggressive defense is the only way to win the Big12 south, and anything beyond that.

Being on the job for just 3 weeks and having to sign a contract, move a family, assemble a coaching staff, and trying to keep a recruiting class in tact was a mountain to climb. Yes we lost a few recruits, but TT and staff kept the core group in place and even added a few. All this on very short order. Can you imagine what 2011 recruiting will be with TT having a full year!
I think we did better than expected.
Calvin Simth DT from Hialeah, Fl had offers from FU, FSU, Notre Dame, Alabama, Tennessee and many others. He was being pursued heavily by many all the way up to yesterday. The young man has chosen New Mexico over everyone. Surprise oh yea but it just shows anything can happen in recruiting. You ca not blame the coaches -kids and their families are going to decide where they want to go. I think TT did a great job.

Voice of Reason,
I know this might be hard to accept, but has it ever dawned on you that Tennesse has a better athletic and football program than TT? They have far more money and resources to work with, and a lot of young players would rather play in the hills of Tennesse than the sandy, windy high plains of Lubbock?
You rave about Dooley coming in late and saving a Top 10 recruiting class. Let me ask you a question: did your lord and savior Mike Leach EVER have a top 10 recruiting class????
The ability of Tennesse to have a top 10 class has more to do with the resources, tradition and athletic program than it does Dooley. You didn’t exactly see USC’s recruiting class fall off the cliff either, did you?

All of you knocking this class don’t know Sh$% about recruiting! Bunch of babies still upset over Leach. I was a huge Leach supporter and I hated to see him go! But the mere fact that you are all in such an uproar about this class proves that you really don’t know Texas Tech recruiting! Look back over the last 10 years and tell me how this class is SO much worse than any of the others! All of you crying for Kadron probably have never even watched video of the kid playing!
I think it is funny that there are actually some of you out there judging TT against Tennessee and USC, how many Leach classes rivaled any of those schools during his tenure here? Come ON! You guys are obviously entitled to your opinions, but at least be better informed! Review Tech history, before you go dogging TT’s new recruiting class!
To all of you lamenting for Ruff, check out ECU’s recruiting class! How many would prefer that over TT’s? If these kids would have followed him anywhere and he is such a “magical recruiter”, why did they not flock to ECU? To those of you who say that is not a fair comparison, I say hold up, we have some comparing TT’s class to USC, and Tennessee.
Bottom line the defense was mediocre and gave up way too many 90+ yard drives over the years…I for one am glad to see the influx of defensive players and new coaches and I hope we get a better result on that side of the ball.
One last thing. To those of you that keep insisting that all we will do is run the ball next year, watch some Troy football film and give a count of how many I-formations they line up in! Until then just shut up and continue to be the empty seats at The Jones!

Did you ever hear of the little engine that could? That is what Tech has to be to compete with the Big Boys! We have to somehow beat their 4 & 5 stars with our 2, 3 and a few 4 stars. It’s a fact! If you think we’re going to get more then the occasional 5 star and just a few 4 stars you are the one that is delusional. It’s not going to happen.

Fil_Gman – Excellent post!
I love how all these people say well we were the 24th best recruiting class and now we’re 44th. Tubs screwed it up. What a joke!
When we were 24th under Leach a lot of players hadn’t committed yet. Once they start committing they make their school move up on the list. We weren’t losing anyone, the other schools were just gaining and moving ahead of us. We were always 44th (or around there), the other schools just didn’t have their commits yet. I actually think our class is better than then before Leach left. I love the addition of the quick linebackers that can blitz and can also cover. We’ve never really had that. I think Bront Bird is the closest to that. We’re going have a knock down secondary and our Defensive line just got so much better.
For any of you who think offense wins championships, look at the last 4 national champs and where they ranked defensively. DEFENSE wins championships. Look at Nebraska. No offense but starting to get a great defense (with an SEC Defensive coach) and they’re rising in the rankings and playing meaningful games. Wreck ‘Em! Love the class!

Next year in the Big 12…Everyone should take a composite of the recruiting rankings over the last 5 years and just mail them and save everyone the hassle of playing the games. As many of you seem to know, the rankings of the recruiting classes is the only thing that matters in determining the outcome.
I would add this, right now I think it was more important to get defensive players even if they lost some offensive players because you will see a more balanced team with a better chance of competing consistently. We had one of the best offenses in the country. We could hardly improve there anymore.
We are transforming into a more balanced team and if we can keep Tuberville here…he now looks like the guy!

You dont have to be 4star or 5star to be a great player. UT and the rest of them have the history and the money to recruit. Until we have a big12 championship we can dream of getting 5star recruits on a normal basis. Leach couldnt do that in 10 years.

I agree with people Leach’s firing wasnt handled right. The administration screwed up on how they handled it. But it is time to move on from all of the hatred. I thank Mike Leach for the ability to bring in the caliber of a coach as TT. He is the best complete football coach or program has ever had. Mike Leach was a great guy to get us some kind of national attention (good or bad). We need a coach that can deliver us both sides of the ball and have a proven winning track record. I am tired of the alum siding with Leach. Its time to put it all behind us and have team Texas Tech instead of team Leach. It will only help our school and help us to become a respectable program.

Exactly where we were with Leach and exactly where we were going to stay. Tubs is going to win. Tubs is going to bring us what we want, a big xii championship and more.
He’s a known recruiter who brought amazing coaches and recruiters in. As of January 2010 the Texas Tech football program has never been brighter. We have a proven head coach with great assistants under him, a new stadium expansion that will be filled (no matter what all those team leachers say), and a great returning team that will absolutely put us in a position to win the big XII this year. It’s like an article I read on ESPN, “Tuberville comes into Tech with a full cubbard, not a half full, but a FULL cubbard of talent. There’s no reason he can’t win his conference in the first year.”

First let me say that Tuberville will be an adequate coach for Tech.
But he will be more of a manager than a coach. He will hire the coaches and then let them coach. Don’t expect him to be too involved with the offense or defense. He will not be out recruiting, he may make a few calls and a trip or two, but that will be the exception. If any part of the program has issues there will be no direct tie back to Tuberville. He will spend his time smoozing with the boosters and alums and eating the rubber chicken dinners.
He is just what the admin wanted and it is fortunate for them that he came begging.
I was a big Mike Leach fan. I loved the offense and have had season tickets for several years. I hated the way Tech treated him, but I also think he brought a lot of it on himself. He had a way out of it and chose to stubbornly stand pat, messing up the lives of many people – his assistants, the players, etc. That being said, I am willing to give Tuberville and the staff he has put together the benefit of the doubt. I think the defensive additions are great and have hope that, with major improvements on that side of the ball, we can win 10 or 11 games next year. I think that those of you who say that Tuberville will go back to a run-oriented offense in a year or two have your minds made up and no facts or statements by Tuberville and his OC or anyone else will change them. I have no reason to believe that Tuberville is a liar or that Brown is all of a sudden going to trash all his coaching experience and install a running offense. The fact that Tuberville was unsuccessful with the spread for ONE year that he tried it was because he did not have the players to make it work nor the backing of the school or fans to make it work. He has that here, or at least he has the backing of some fans here. Wreck ‘em Tech!

I think it is a great class, just a different set of p[layers than what I thought it would be. The fact that a good player narrowed it down to Texas Tech and Florida is a move forward. Can you really say that we werre battling to the end with SEC teams two years ago? Leach brought us national attention. Now TT has a chance to bring us some more big victories, like Mike did. But with a solid defense, we can probably avoid some of the upset games we had before, where we were heavy favorites to Colorado and got crushed at home. Be happy, and get excited. There are players here that are probably diamonds in the rough, and were rated late by Rivals. I think they will be coached into very solid college players. Give them a chance. There were some really good players who considered coming to Tech. If we have a good year, the good coaches we have will have another solid class next year, with OL and RB. But by my guess, this is the best class we have had in years. These players are big and fast. Get behind them and start looking forward to spring practice! Guns up!

Fact Check: Will Muschamp, DC and HC in waiting at Texas, was DC at Auburn. Tommy Tuberville was the HC. Advantage – Tuberville
Gerald Myers hired an OC with no HC experience 10 years ago named Mike Leach. Advantage – Myers
Leach has an explosive offense putting Tech football on the national radar. Advantage – Leach; Advantage – Myers who hired Leach.
Tech football enjoys tremendous success, TV exposure, recruiting, and stadium expansion. Advantage -Leach; Advantage Myers who hired Leach.
Tech needs a new HC and attracks a coach the calliber of Tuberville. Advantage -Myers
The lessons of the last 10 years are that a talented and athletic defense will and did beat the Leach Air Raid Offense on a regular basis. (Anyone want to bet that if the 2008 Texas Texas Tech game lasted another 5 minutes Tech would have still won.) Tech had better success against OU than Texas but we still lost those games year in and year out and it was because of defense. It only took Gundy at OSU 4 years to realize you had to play defense while it took Leach 8 years.
I have been a Tech fan since J.T. King was HC and think the Tech program can finally compete with Texas and OU with the defense Tuberville will bring. The bittersweet is that Tech would not be getting the attention of a Tuberville if not for the success and exposure Mike Leach broght to the program. And if Tuberville leaves afte a few years and he builds on that success then Tech will again be able to attrack a name coach. Plus everyone who likes to point at Tuberville’s last year at Auburn you need to check the facts just a little closer. 2008 was Franklins first year as OC. The athletes he inherited were recruited for a running attack not the spread and the Auburn Administration decided they new more about football and pressured Tuberville to make a change mid year.
So everyone just take a step back and act like the class program we are becoming.

This is all over the place but who cares.
Dooley did not have Rats in administration to battle like Tuberville had to do. since Leach’s firing, it seemed evident that Boone would go elsewhwere. I hope he’s happy receiving an education at LSU because he won’t receive many passes. Great defenses there but not much on the other side of the ball if you look at the last few years. If their QB’s are at the same level of Jamarcus Russell, I feel sorry for him.
I wouldn’t bust Ruff’s chops to hard on his class. He had less time than Tubs to contact kids and not being familiar with what Skip had recruited, wait and see what happens. I know everybody likes to drool over what their school was able to do on signing day. We can’t truly measure this signing class until after the 2011 season. same for FL, tu, 0U and all the others. The fact that some of the prized recruits signed elewhere should not be a surprise.
I hope to see more games in person now that my kids are old enough to travel and appreciate the sport. They love their parent’s school and asking about some the great traditions that we talk about. What people fail to realize is that Tuberville was looking for an offense that puts up big numbers while his defense was lights out. Granted that we’re moving to a traditional spread team doesn’t mean that we won’t put up big numbers. Most of the people think we’re going downhill but we aren’t. All Leach cared about was offense and that’s why he won 8 to 9 games a year. Now that we have coaches who been apart of national championships (and WON), it’s time to win the Big 12.

How the defection of the top-rated recruit, Kadron, be about the 6th mentioned in this article. Deserves at least equal press to Scotty.
At one time, TTU had the 17th best class. Last I heard was 34th. Will go down further, losing Kadron. Problably 50? Worse than every other team in the B12S.
Ugh.

“Tech’s passing offense is what caught his attention”. So I guess LSU’s high powered passing offense is what finally swayed him to go their way? I wish the kid well and hope he polishes up his blocking skills.
How true. And let’s remember that LSU is a school filled to the brim with talent including other very talented receivers. This kid might get lost in the shuffle.
…and yet he will. I know LSU has great allure, but Les MIles is a a$$ and may well be gone soon. Even if he isn’t let’s see just how many balls he actually catches over his career at LSU as opposed to Tech. Bad decision, especially with the rationale he and his coach used.

I think we can be both. Happy for the team and enraged at the administration.
Can’t we just look at the positives of what is happening here. I started the day down because of the loss of the 1 receiver, but if you evaluate it and look at the Big Picture this is a positive step forward.
The 1 more receiver does not do near as much as the overall swing to defense. I really like what I’m seeing here
Whoever posted it, The Fl fans, etc. have very little to do with their recruiting. Right now they are by far the #1 Dog in Fl and they get who they want period. I lived in Fl for many years and any place in Texas the fans are much more into it. Fl right now is lucky because both Fl St and Miami have been down, but when they come up some it will get more difficult for the Gators.

Here is a reality check for all of you dogging this class. It is borrowed from DoubletNation.com
if you just want the baby without the labor pains, here is your one liner: If you loved last years recruiting class, you will love this one as well.
For the rest of you, here is some data on just how good or bad the 2010 class really is. (For this analysis I used info provided by Rivals.com, and used the past four recruiting classes for comparison)
How did we rank among the other Big 12 Programs?
2007: 9th
2008: 10th
2009: 6th
2010: 7th
Bottom Line Our class ranked nearly the same as last years class within the conference, and substantialy better than 2007, and 2008 classes.
How did we rank vs. the rest of NCAA Div.1?
2007: 52nd
2008: 45th
2009: T33rd
2010: 41st
Bottom Line: We achieved our second highest national ranking in the last four years.
What is the “Star” distribution of our class?
Year 4 Stars 3 Stars 2 Stars or less
2007 1 17 8
2008 3 10 3
2009 5 15 5
2010 5 15 5
Bottom Line: We have steadily increased the number of 4 star recruits, maintained the number of 3 star recruits, and reduced the number of 2 or less star recruits. Of note is the identical record between 2009 and 2010.
How did we rank by position (using Rivals Rating)?
POS 2007 2008 2009 2010 2010 Rank
QB 5.2 5.7 5.6 5.8 1st
WR 5.6 X 5.8 5.7 T2nd
DB 5.6 5.5 5.7 5.8 1st
LB X X 5.7 5.6 2nd
DE 5.7 5.9 5.5 6 1st
DT 5.5 5.8 5.7 5.7 2nd
OL 5.8 5.7 5.8 5.6 4th
RB 5.6 5.8 5.8 5.8 T1st
—————————————————————-
Avg 5.58 5.72 5.71 5.75 1st
Bottom Line: When you break down the classes by position you see that the 2010 class has the highest rated player at each position more often than not. In addition when you look at the avg. totals for the past four years, 2010′s Avg. Rivals rating of 5.75 is the highest in the last 4 years.
Net Net: 2010′s is nearly identical to the 2009 class when you compare our rankings in the conference, the star distribution, and break it down by position. By position, the 2010 class is actually superior to any class in the last 4 years, including the 2009 class. What is interesting about that is the circumstances. The 2009 class came on the heels of the greatest season in Tech history, a top 5 BCS ranking, a national televised victory over UT, and on the heels of a contract extension for Leach. The 2010 class comes on the heels of an avgerage 9 win season, and the ugliest coaching change in the country. In the end, this class is at worst on par with previous classes, and that credit goes to Leach and his staff for putting it together. A hat tip to Tubs and his staff for keeping it together, and patching where neccesary. Was 2010 the best recruiting class in tech’s history? When compared to just Tech classes, that arguement could be supported by the data. If compared to the rest of the country, it fell a little short. At the end of day, given where we have been, I’ll take that.

Recruiting status means nothing. Just because you were a superstar in H.S. does not mean you will be a superstar in college. I.E. Taylor Potts. When you step up to the next level of play, the players are bigger, faster, stronger and smarter than what you have ever faced in competition and your H.S. glory days mean squat. There are those that shine at the next level but you can’t base this season on a recruiting class with the loss of a wide receiver.
Go Tech!
Let’s face facts. If a kid doesn’t want to come to Tech, it’s because he doesn’t fee comfortable with the staff, the campus, the city, the current players, etc. We want people that want to be here, that want’ to contribute, that want to elevate this program. We don’t need anyone that’s signed under duress and then regrets his decision. He will then never be an asset to this program nor a significant contributor. More than likely he will quit, leave, or be a troublemaker because he is not happy. So to those that chose to take a pass on Tech for whatever reason best of luck to you and I hope we wear your team out if and when we play. And for those that chose to come to Tech, welcome and best of luck. I look forward to watching your development, contributions, and playing for us. Star ratings mean nothing if you don’t have the heart, drive, desire, and commitment to play big time college football. Look at UT, A&M, & OU. With as many “Star” players as they get, they should be torching teams every year, yet they don’t. With the “talent” they recruit they underachieve big time. And that’s because a team cannot be made up of a bunch of I’s and Me’s. But don’t get me wrong, if a coach can get a team of I’s and Me’s to play together, watch out! Highly unlikely though, due to the massive egos and the coddling it takes for these prima donnas. So to sum up, I’ll take a group of hard working, driven players with heart, desire and maybe a little less talent and mold them into a team that will whip some ass! Wreck’em Tech.

Solid recruiting class.
Each year, teams lose some kids and gain others. This year was no different. Taking into consideration the loss of Leach and his recruiting staff, Tech did very well to hold as many quality looking recruits as they did. They added a few as well. Although ranked higher earlier,Tech likely would have lost some to other schools. It happens.
No one should freak out over recruit ranking services either. Tech has never been scored well. According to rivals…..Tech recruited about as well this year as last. (2009 5 X 4 star recruits; 2010 5 X 4 star recruits) Last year was the best recruiting year in the rivals database……what does that tell you. Keep this in mind. Brandon Sharpe was arguably are most dominant defensive player in 2009. Brandon Sharpe was a 2 star recruit.

Now many of these kids contribute their freshman years? Very few! Most of the kids will not start until fall 2011. most will be redshirted.

quate. These young men who have agreed to invest several years of their lives in TTU deserve a
proper article, one they will be proud to send to their mothers or girlfriends who may be compiling a scrap-

at journalism, on their behalf, is quite frankly embarrassing. Nothing wrong with stroking their egos a little

Football is about raw power and ability that is honed by a good coaching staff and used accordingly to provide the desired results. Rankings are just that, rankings. What happens if boone starts at LSU and the first series of his college career, he tears his acl, or he develops family problems, or girlfriend problems, or gambling problems, or schoolwork problems, or starts abusing alcohol or drugs. I remember a player that was a walk on with no scholarship offers from anywhere that proved heart and desire can beat out rankings. His name is Wes Welker. I wanted to quit supporting the Red Raiders but i just cant. I do want the administration to change though. Meyers still remains a problem. I would like to see a concrete end to the Mike Leach saga and move on to the next face of the TexasTech Red Raiders, without meyers, bailey, hance, and james. Tommy needs people that will “have his back”, fans, staff, administration and community. It will take all of us to make things happen. Still mad about the Leach thing though.

Great post. Shows our recruiting classes are getting better. Even as far back as Spike’s tenure, Tech always did better than the recruiting class ranks suggested we would. Developing talent is a very important part of the process. Hopefully, Tuberville will develop these guys into 5 star players and improve our recruiting class each year as we begin to contend for championships.

Techster,
I am a fan of Tech football. Leach made it exciting as a offensive show. What you seem to be unable to grasp is Leach was not an innocent in this. If he had used his head you would not have to stress over all this.
Listen to his language in the video with Adam James. Read the deposition and the language he used then. His mouth and emotions got the best of him. The admin and I suppose booster thought, “give this boy enough rope and he will hang himself.” Leach got the rope, climbed on the horse, and spurred himself into Tech history.
I don’t like how it was handled. THey never should have resigned him if they had issues. However, as Leach looks out to sea wishing he was a pirate, in the back of his mind he will know how he got to where he is.
We now have a class coach and so many good things happening. Let it go bud; soon no one will hear you as they cheer Tech on this Fall

“I am writing this letter on behalf of Mike Leach in regards to the Adam James situation. I was the inside receiver coach at Texas Tech when we made the decision the sign Adam James in January of 2007. Adam had no offers to play NCAA D1 football during and after his Senior year. After a conversation between Coach Leach and Adams father Craig, Coach Leach acquired a brief highlight tape of Adam and made the decision to take him as a scholarship student athlete. I was opposed to doing so in belief he was not a D1 football player. Coach Leach overrode my opinion and Adam became a Red Raider. During the rest of my time at Texas Tech I was Adams position coach where I always remained critical of Adams ability to play at this level due to being lazy in not only the classroom but also in the off season and during practice. Coach Leach was the one who kept saying he believed Adam would eventually contribute. Adams teammates believed he was selfish and were constantly getting onto him for lack of effort as they sensed entitlement on his part due to his father being a very good football player. Adam eventually ended up playing a little after I left due to his body type being able to do some TE sets which consists of around 5-10 plays a game. Adam should be thankful for the opportunity to play at Texas Tech and for Mike Leach, who gave him the opportunity. In my opinion playing 5-10 plays a game in an outstanding offense is more than he would get at any other school in NCAA D1 football.

Yes I knew where you got the information. Sorry that I didn’t make it more clear but my reply was directed at your statement “but Coach Leach in his stubborn way insisted on signing this wonderful young man.” My point was that Coach Leach didn’t really want James either but took him on as a favor to Craig James and Kent Hance and that he did not communicate to his staff that he was doing this as a favor. I’d bet if the truth is known, Craig paid Tech for Adam to be put on the team.

This statement and Rileys about Adam breaking the door and cussing out the coaches has alot to do with this team and the new coach, why, because he is still on the team, why is he still on the team? WHO else could break a door and still be on a team and cuss out the coaches,he is still on this team, why? This situation is a distraction to the team and what he wants to do, Tuberville, he expects everyone to work hard but there is Adam and his past history, will he give him a free pass like Leach did or will he ask him to leave the team, if he exhibits old habits, most people like Adam do not change, we shall see, but in my opinion you still have a cancer on this new team..

I’m sorry that I was trying to stay with actual facts that had been published. The sky is the limit if you are just going to make up stuff. The only facts I’ve seen are that Leach wanted Adam and forced his coaches to take him. I do not believe that Leach would be forced to do anything he did not want to based on all the stubborn independent behavior he has displayed over the years.
