Houston standout commits to Red Raiders
Sugar Land Kempner standout Mike Jones, one of 10 finalists for the Touchdown Club of Houston’s defensive player of the year award, made an oral commitment to Texas Tech on Sunday, according to ESPN.com.
Jones is a 6-foot-2, 255-pound defensive tackle. As a senior last season, he was credited with 59 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 71/2 sacks, three caused fumbles and another fumble recovered. He also was first-team all-District 23-5A.
Jones could not be reached for comment.
Boise State and Louisiana-Lafayette were among other schools pursuing him.
I could be wrong but I think this kid is a real reach! Lets not offer anymore to second rungers and hold on to the rest of our scholarships til next yr when kids should start really clammerin to get to Raiderland. But I sure hope we get that Florida LB Kitchens!! Good luck coach Willis! Stay on him til the end!

I bet Wes Welker seemed like a real reach when he walked on as an undersized wide reciever who didn’t have amazing top end speed! Who says “I’m a Salesman” Tuberville can recruit? Great job getting 1 star Mike Jones!
Now Titanic Tuberville and staff have obtained two 2 star commitments and a 1 star commitment so now Titanic Tuberville has 5 stars worth of commitments, but it took 3 players to get the 5 stars. I have excluded the one 3 star commitment that Titanic and staff recruited since he does not have his grades and is going JUCO.
Compare the Mike Jones signing to that of UT’s Mack Brown who obtained in the final weekend before signing day, Jackson Jeffcoat and Jordan Hicks who are both 5 star commitments.
Texas Tech has made a big mistake by not naming Ruffin McNeill the new head coach and keeping the 2009 staff in place. Not only has recruiting taken a dive this year, but it will continue with the cobbled staff Titanic Tuberville has put together having no ties or rapport with Texas high school football coaches. The hiring of Tuberville is going to set our program back until we can get rid of him.
Texas Tech was set to win the Big 12 championship in 2010 if Ruffin and the 2009 staff had been kept in place, but I have serious doubts that Titanic Tuberville and his hodge podge coaching staff can lead the Texas Tech team to a Big 12
championship. Texas Tech will slide to mediocrity if we miss this golden chance to win the Big 12 in 2010 because the key teams won’t be down after the 2010 season. For 2010, UT will be lacking experience and we catch them early, OU is rebuilding their defense and trying to find offensive consistency and Nebraska lost their key defensive player and they have a weak offense.
Texas Tech made the same mistake when they hired head coaches who had previously won national championships in men’s and women’s basketball because those accolades meant nothing when it came to recruiting in Texas and competing in the Big 12.

Why don’t the Negative Nancies wait until you see whether this was a good recruit or not. No one knows how good a player is until 2-3 years in. There are very few exceptions. Tommy Tuberville is a good coach and a good man. Why don’t all of you who predict doom and gloom just turn your computers off and give it a rest. Tuberville went through the same mess at Auburn with Bobby Lowder of Montgomery. In Tuberville’s 13-0 season, Lowder and some of his cronies, along with the AD for Auburn, went on a shopping trip to find a new coach. Does that sound familiar? The next season was terrible at Auburn; there was no support among the “Big Dogs”, and they sandbagged Tommy Tuberville. The man is GOOD; give him a chance. Mike Leach is gone, so why sandbag the new coach and the team. In addition, while Tommy Tuberville was at Auburn, he beat Alabama year after year. I predict that he will lead Tech to win the Big 12, just give him this year of rebuilding.

If you had to choose between taking five star recruits or two star recruits, you would obviously take the five stars. However, if that is not an option, you get the best players you can, looking for those with traits that you believe will fit your system. Hopefully this most recent recruit and others have a certain build or speed that caught the coaches’ eyes. Boise State isn’t too shabby of a program last time I looked, so this player has something going for him.
Don’t let your anger (completely justified) at the administration cause you to prejudge or bad mouth some 18 year old kid. Keep your anger focused on Myers, Bailey and Hance where it belongs. As for Tuberville, I’m giving him a chance to prove himself, but I expect immediate results.

On the one hand, Tube’s recruiting trove of 1- and 2-star players must change. On the other hand, I won’t criticize him yet, b/c all the better players were taken by the time he arrived at TTU.
That said, Leach had taken recruiting to its apex at TTU. 3- and 4-star recruits. Even out-of-state interest. To keep TTU as the third best program in the B12S, Tube will need to do the same.
Unfortunately, I am not optimistic. You need something to sell. Lubbock has friendly people, but pales in comparison, esp to Austin. Further, it is tough for moms in Dal/Hou to see their kids play at TTU. Finally, TTU’s academics – I checked – lowest SAT scores in the B12. And when MIZ was making noise recently about joining the B10, they specifically cited TTU in contrasting the educational difference betw B12 and B10 conferences.
So, absent Leach’s pinball aerial attack, how will TTU get enough good recruits to be consistently competitive in the B12? W/ BU’s continued good recruiting, I see a real chance of TTU at the bottom of the B12S. Not next year w/ Leach’s recruits, but in the next 3-4 years. Ugh.

As far as the others Hance and Bailey who get dogged in this Leach deal, there mistake was (is) not replacing Gerald. If we had a Strong Athletic Director in place the level this Leach deal reached would have never happened!
True supporters will still attend games and support the team, band and all others associated w/the program! True supporters will embrace change, work in constructive activities to help promote positive change. The answer is not take away your tickets and climb out of the sand box!

v o reason, what are you thinking? TT just got here and this is an add on recruit. despite what some leach kool-aid drinkers have spread, Tech did not have a top class. Unless you have some late breaking news, we have only lost the linebacker recruit in Tenneessee and he may have decided not to come because he is undersized for the proposed 3-4 defense. It did not change our national recruiting status at 30 something nationally and number seven in the big twelve. While this add-on may not be great, this staff may be filling wholes that the previous staff didn’t even realize were there. Wrong, wrong, wrong. The majority are upset as to how this whole debacle went down, are supportive of Coach Leach and are also supportive of Coach Tuberville. There will be two opportunities for you to be proven wrong in the coming months. The first will be when they announce season ticket sales and compare them to last year (I do expect a drop in season ticket sales but the numbers will not support your “majority feels” theory). The second will be actual attendance at the games next fall.

Attendance will be terrible as disgruntled fans are going to pull their tickets. It’s not like they went to the games anyway because we did not sell out any games. Maybe A&M, but we didn’t fill any seats up. We’ll never have any tradition if the alumni/students want to divide everyone from the university just because some don’t like what went down. Not everyone feels like they do and they need to realize that. If our university continues to be this way, it won’t be a desirable place for anyone to come. That goes for both the administration and the Team Leach people.

Speaking of National Champions…The last time Leach left a school..The team won the National Championship the next season. I believe he was railroaded and wronged at Texas Tech, but when OK lost him to Tech, they tweeked the offense a little bit and rode it to a national championship.
The bottom line on the system when certain components are tweeked it becomes more conducive to winning FB. This Hal Mumme system was designed to run up impressive offensive stats, but lacks in certain areas of the overall Big Picture.
I am not trying to run down all the good Leach did, but if Tuberville follows what Stoops did when Leach left Oklahoma for TT…the offense although it may not run up the Stats could actually become stronger in the Big Picture of winning FB games.
Many think the system is complex when in reality it is really pretty simplistic once you understand it.

That’s a fair assessment about Leach. Many people are single-minded and cannot see the bigger picture. Just because he was the greatest coach in our school’s history just by looking at stats doesn’t mean he was truly successful. I think he was starting to become too big headed and couldn’t focus on his job. Tuberville will be successful here. He’s been apart of many championship teams along the years and knows what it takes to win.

RedRaiderAlum,
He was the OC, but if you remember Bob Stoops wanted some one from the Hal Mumme system when he took the job at OU because he found it the most difficult offense to prepare for when he was at FL as a DC when they won the National Championship. Leach spent 1 year with Stoops and he knew what he needed to know and tweaked the system and rode it to a National Championship.
I believe in giving credit where credit is due and in some ways Leach was an amazing coach and as mentioned in may have been time for him to go anyway, but that does not change the fact that he was railroaded and mistreated.
It also doesn’t mean because he is gone that Tech FB is dead…I think we all need to put some of the emotions aside and look at some of this with our brains instead of our emotions.

For all of you mesmerized by recruiting rankings and 5 star this and 4 star that…….
Every year Texas cleans up on recruits. This year is one of their best.
As they arrogantly like to say, “We don’t recruit, we select.”
Yet, with all the talent they bring in year after year, haven’t they only had one undeafeated season and one national championship in the last 40 years? With the exception of that Vince Young team, they have managed to lose at least one game every year with all that talent. And for all their “selecting”, they cannot find a decent running back? If a team recruits three blue chip QB’s, only one gets to play.
In reality, with all the talent they bring in, they are the most under achieving teams in history.
And some of you guys knock Tech.

TTU-dad X5 – Agree regarding Leach being here a bit too long.
Though I feel Leach was the most productive coach TTU has had since Cawthon, and that I believe he was railroaded by the current leadership, I do feel he should, for his sake and Tech’s, have left a couple of years ago. Only a few coaches last for more than a few years at any one school and Leach had already been around longer than most. He would of had a better chance to get another good coaching job; we would have been in position to get a good coach (someone like Tuberville would not have been second guessed so much), and though we would have complained about Leach leaving us, no one would have complained for much more than a week.

Looks like Mike Jones may be out of the same mold as Ra jon Henley and Richard Jones. If he is as good as those two Houston area players he will be a great contributor. I don’t think TT would have offered him a scholarship unless he was projected to fill a need.
Folks, Mike Leach is gone and Tommy and his staff and the team will get all of my support. Anyone who does differently is wrong. I enjoyed Leach and the fact that you had to love or hate the way he called a game. No one knew what to expect as he was truly one of a kind. Had the termination been handled in a professional manner and Leach treated fairly the transition to the new staff would have been much easier for all.
I think Tech is fortunate that Tubberville was interested and joined us. His brand of football will be interesting to see. Ruff, Lincoln, Brian and the rest have new homes and I will continue to watch their progress since I will always thank them for their contribution in making Tech revelent in college ball.
I just hate that the other universities in Texas and around the county feel like we are a joke and our administration is unprofessional.
