Tennessee hires Tech strength coach
Bennie Wylie, the Texas Tech football team’s strength and conditioning coach the last five years, has been hired by Tennessee. The Volunteers announced the move Saturday, and it also was confirmed by a Tech spokesman.
Wylie, 33, is the second member of former Tech coach Mike Leach’s staff to accept an offer from new Tennessee coach Derek Dooley. Former Tech special teams coach Eric Russell was hired in the same capacity shortly after Dooley left Louisiana Tech for Tennessee in mid-January.
“It’s just a great opportunity to be here with coach Dooley and be on the front end of this movement,” Wylie said in a statement released by the Tennessee athletic department. “I’m ready to get this program back on top of the SEC and I’m just really excited about the kids we have here. We have great talent, and I’m just really excited to work with those guys just as soon as I get here.”
Wylie had been retained on a six-month trial basis by new Tech coach Tommy Tuberville after Tuberville was hired on Jan. 9.
Wylie, from Mexia, was a college running back at Sam Houston State. He came to Tech after four years as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Dallas Cowboys.
now we’re talking hard to replace… ugh…

As a Tennessee fan I couldn’t be happier with this hire. I have a great respect for Tommy Tuberville and wish Tech all the luck in the world. However I’m really pleased that we got Bennie Wylie. I was at the Tennessee vs. Texas Tech game in Knoxville in 1997 (won by the Vols 52-17 thanks to a guy named Peyton Manning) and I remember how classy the Tech fans were especially Zebbie Lethridge’s parents.

Only good enough for a six month try out at Hance Tech, but
good enough for the permanent job at Tennessee.
Way to go Tubville.

Wow, yep, hate to lose him, Bennie is awesome and will do a great job for the Volunteers, its our loss, but the way Tubby is compiling coaches, i am sure we will have a quality replacement soon. I just hope after a few winning seasons that we don’t wave goodbye to an entire staff that has absolutely no ties to Tech, because i can assure you, that as soon as we win our 10th game next season, the calls will pour in for Tubby and we will see a mass exodus of coaches to greater things. I hope the Tech administrators have an eye on a replacement coach, we will need one soon, I am sure. I hope I am wrong, but i doubt it.

I’m a Salesman Tuberville has now achieved his goal of completely dismantling the 2009 Texas Tech football staff and losing 2010 recruits and recruiting ranking.
Tuberville stated that he was going to keep the Air Raid Offense and on the air with ESPN he said he was going to keep 80% to 90% of the 2009 Texas Tech staff. Well, just as Tuberville lied to the Ole Miss constituency, he has lied to the Texas Tech faithful.
Red Raider Nation can now get ready for the “All Hat & No Cattle” era of Texas Tech football under I’m a Salesman Tuberville.

You shouldn’t have counted on Tuberville keeping the Mike Leach offense (which was your best shot). Tuberville will bring the powermouth SEC style football to the Big 12 and will eventually leave TECH. Possibly for Tennessee when Derek Dooley takes over at Georgia. See we play real football in the SEC. Why not come to the SOUTHeastern conference? However I am a Tech Fan!

Tube says what he thinks we want to hear and then does whatever he wants. It’s doubtful he will keep the offense ANYTHING like it was. I sense run, run, pass, punt!
This whole thing was a set up job!
Tube was buddies with james at ESPN, james told him about the plan with hance to fire Leach, Tube said he would take the job after they fired Leach
Tube has LESS LOYALTY to tech than Leach did……………Leach was here 10 years and would have been here indefinitely, tube may be gone next year!
So yeah, you HANCE LOVER/ Leach haters… let’s move on huh, sweep the corruption and cowardly way we did Leach under the rug and …” Move On” to ONE year of tube ..and then what????

I don’t understand why so many of you doubt that Tuberville will continue to air the ball out? Didn’t you see the offense that Troy ran under our new offensive coach? Hasn’t he said that he researched the type of offense that kids want to play in today? He said that Tech has gained national recognition because of the offense that we put on the field! It sounds to me like most of you are calling Tuberville a liar before you give the man a chance. I understand from some Auburn alums that he is a man of high moral character, a very good person. He has all of the tools in place to continue on the air raid offense along with beefing up our defense. The assistant coaches that he is hiring will help build a very strong recruiting pipeline into Lubbock. No after I think about it you are all correct, lets second guess every move he makes, talk bad about every coacing hire he makes and just throw in the towel before he ever gets the football team on the field. Give the man a chance!

What a great loss to Tech. He was an all around nice guy and a great motivator. Thats why Wes Welker would come back to Tech in New Englands off season to train with Bennie. It is now sinking in that the Raiders i knew and loved and that my son and all of his friends and the coaching staff worked so hard to finally get the respect due to the Red Raiders, is dismantled and gone. We’ve lost some wonderful people but I will always love Tech and follow them. It’s just that now I will be watching alot of other teams and rooting for them too.

Don’t hang this on Tuberville…This is not unusual. My concern with Tuberville is his potential to be one and done when a job he really wants comes open next year or at best within the next 3 years. Tuberville mainly took this job because he did not want to spend another season on the sidelines and at the time of the opening it looked like the Texas Tech job was the only viable D-1 job that was going to be availble.
He could become Texas Tech’s Lane Kiffin….

For Tuberville to dismantle the staff that had loyalty to Tech and replace them with folks that have no reason to stay if/when Tuberville moves on shows he does not care about the future of the program. I am now 100% convinced Tuberville does not “get” Texas Tech.
And the fact that he can tell us all that he’s not going to clean house with the coaching staff, and then does just that, is not okay. But, does fit in with the way Hance and co. seem to operate.

I know we have been successful, but we have been middle of the road. When did we become addicted to mediocrity? What we had was good for ONE 11 win season in 10 years and a bunch of mediocre bowls that most of you complaining didn’t even bother to buy tickets for much less travel to!

This is just a discussion…I and others were just raising some concerns and observations. Admittedly, much of it is conjecture, but there isn’t any “hate” intended.
What is wrong with being cognizant of the possibility because of someones background there is a possibilty something could happen.
Personally, I really think under the cirumstance Tuberville was the best hire….The problem was really the circumstances created and instead of having ample time to look for a replacement for Leach, Texas Tech had its back to the wall and had to hire the person with the best resume without taking into account how long he might stay.
There certainly isn’t any “hate” here toward Tuberville or anyone else, but just some inductive thinking for the sake of awareness and discussion

I’ve had one question all along – why couldn’t the administration have waited one week to suspend Leach/take action? If they would have waited until after the Alamo Bowl it seems this could have been settled in a way that Leach could have kept his reputation, the players and fans could have enjoyed the Alamo Bowl with less scandal and the university would never have taken such a beating in the media and been so divided. I cannot come up with one GOOD reason they couldn’t have waited.

Exactly! This irrational approach by the administration is what was the real problem. Before the Alamo Bowl, talk to Leach tell him we will visit this issue after the Game when it could be done out of the spotlight.
If Leach was uncooperative at that point tell him we do not think you can function as our coach anymore and offer him a settlement to resign…then the whole atmosphere would not be near as incinerative as it is today and Texas Tech would have been able to prevent some of the hit it is taking on its image.
Administrators jobs are to prevent situations like this from arising…not be in the center of them.

Jason55,
You made a comment in one of your posts about Craig James….”wouldn’t most parents do what he did”
Under the circumstances I do not think so. Most parents would have had their “college” age child (21 in Adam James case) who was under scholarship…deal with the coaches on their own. Remember we are not talking about peewee sports here and he was over 18 and away from home
Let me tell you what I did…
I had a daughter that was one of the best in her class in her sport at her position in the nation. She was recruited by about 70 D-1 schools, which is alot for a female athlete.
During her Jr Year she severely hurt her ankle, but came back and finished strong…During her Senior Year she began to use the ankle injury as an excuse to get out of certain drills. I recognized that and mentioned it to her. In spite of her decreased work ethic, She was good enough to coast through her Senior Year and had an unbelivable season, but I knew it could have been even better with the proper work ethic.
She signed with a school that was coached by an acquantince and friend of mine for over 30 years. During her freshman season she would complain about the coach and some of the senior players because she felt they didn’t treat her with enough respect and that sometimes the coach had her on the second team when she felt she was a first teamer (she was ability wise and performance wise, but still not work ethic wise) She wanted me to talk to the coach. I refused and said you are in college now and you are going to have to prove to the Coach and the senior players that you deserve to be treated with their respect and you need to quit using your ankle as an excuse not to do certain things. She would get upset with me but I held my ground. Even though I could have, I never talked to the coach about anything in regards to her playing and only did one time talk to him about her not doing as well in some class when he promised me he would make sure she was at study table to maintain her grades…He assured me, he had tried, but she would not always show up. I took his word for it
I will add that if I was Adam James father, I would have told him to leave the team if he felt he was being mistreated. I would have advised him to deal with this situation on his own and if Coach Leach was so Bad he should go to another college to finish it out.
I do not view anything of what I know about this as abuse of Adam James by Mike Leach
Report this comment
Not a big deal…..I could go find a hundred guys at the gym and they could become a strength coach, as far as Leach’s offense, which was a gimmick offense, produced a .500 bowl record no bcs games, no big 12 championships, not even a south division title, there is a reason that every time we played a mediocre SEC team we got shut down, so I dont understand why everyone is making such a big deal, that we are changing it up a little, maybe we can finally start playing defense which is something Leach ignored throughout his tenure

You have an interesting post BlueChipperDad…….
Maybe abuse is not the proper word. But I believe Leach, in a very prima donna way, did this strictly to humiliate Adam James, not to “help him become a man” or to help the team. James was diagnosed as having a concussion by a medical doctor. We don’t know the extent of the injury… but any concussion should have been taken seriously. Evidently Leach was highly miffed and agitated with Adam for other reasons….weak performance, attitude, whatever…
Now was this action brutal or violent…… no of course not. I’ve been through boot camp and served in ‘Nam many decades ago……… that was brutal, that was violent…. Leach’s actions, IMHO, were very stupid, very child like.
In my opinion what Leach should have done is written Adam James off at that point. Rather than lose his cool (which is what he did) and send Adam to the “shed” he should have told Adam to gather his things and go to his dorm room…….. Then later made ever effort to take Adams scholarship away. He should have sent Adam packing.
A head football coach at a major university should know better. I can’t see the head coach at Texas, Okla, Alabama, etc taking the approach Leach took.
Bottom line is everyone lost.

Prove he said this. You and others continue to make statements against Tuberville that you cannot support with facts. He never said this. Search the AJ archives for the article in which he talked about the coaches. He said he would first hire an offensive coordinator and a defensive coordinator and would then let them be involved in the decisions regarding the remaining staff. He said essentially the same thing on ESPN.
Sportsmanship said: “For Tuberville to dismantle the staff that had loyalty to Tech and replace them with folks that have no reason to stay if/when Tuberville moves on shows he does not care about the future of the program. I am now 100% convinced Tuberville does not “get” Texas Tech.”
You do understand that Leach completely dismantled the existing coaching staff when he was hired at Tech? He only kept Tommy McVay who was in a non coaching role. Does that mean that Leach did not “get” Tech. Look, most coaching changes end up dismantling the existing coaching staffs. That’s just the way of life in the coaching world. Fans don’t like it but the coaches understand it. Also, any of Leach’s staff who were vocal in support of him during this debacle were not going to be retained. The lawyers made sure of that.
That said, I’m sorry to see Wylie go. He was great coach. Tennessee got a good one. Hopefully Tuberville will find someone even better.

Tuberville, 55, became a strong candidate when it was determined he would not insist on hiring his own staff, a source told ESPN.com’s Maisel. Tuberville also will not cost Tech a contract buyout.
Here is the link if you want to look it up:

While these words didn’t come out of Tuberville’s mouth it is absolutely implied – perhaps by Tech’s administration – that there will be a high level of retention of Tech’s current coaching staff.

Tuberville, 55, became a strong candidate when it was determined he would not insist on hiring his own staff, a source told ESPN.com’s Maisel. Tuberville also will not cost Tech a contract buyout.
Thank you. This proves my point perfectly. Tuberville never said what people are claiming he said. The administration didn’t say it either. There was a “source”. Probably someone within the program wishfully thinking that what they wanted to happen would. And it seems a lot of Tech fans are hearing what they hoped to hear but what was really never said.
I am a Leach fan and I hope I get to continue to support him down the road. But I am a Red Raider first. Coach Tuberville is now our coach and deserves our support. He doesn’t deserve all of the lies being told to try and discredit him.

@Jason55 – I’ll agree with you that TT could prove successful at Tech, and he’s made some decent hires thus far. BW is a real loss and will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to replace. The players absolutely loved him. He connected with them like no other (intangible that can’t be replaced any time soon). Those who spent any time around the program know what I’m talking about.
CJ may be many things, but he is not honest, a man of character or a dad like any other dad. He is a spineless, deceptive, overbearing and enabling father. CJ is anything but a courageous father. His behavior in this fiasco speaks volumes about his son’s work ethic and privileged attitude.
A man of character and integrity would not have hovered over the coaches begging for more playing time for his son or used his influence to threaten the University. He would have told his son to work harder to earn more playing time. He would have made AJ apologize to the coaches and pay for the door he shattered in the athletic department and then had the coaches work him until his tongue dragged the turf. He would have made his son sit down with he and the coach to resolve the issue. He would have used this as an opportunity to teach his son perseverance and grit. CJ has a track record at Plano High, Prestonwood and now Tech. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!
I remember my dad telling my coach to be tougher on me than the other players. I also vividly remember him telling my coach work me until I couldn’t run any longer after a three day HS suspension that let my teammates down. Thanks DAD – 28 years later I am a better person for it!

RaiderBacker – someone – I think it’s the Tech Administration – put it out there that Tuberville would keep a lot of the then current coaching staff. No, the words didn’t come out of his mouth. I would have to look up exactly what he said – I think it was something like once he hired his OC and DC they would have to see who might fit at that point.
I think the Tech Administration was trying to make their choice as HC more palatable with folks so upset about Leach.
But I also think Tuberville is a smart enough guy to know he walked into a pretty unusual situation with a divided fan base-which he has acknowledged – and that getting rid of pretty much everyone associated with the success of the last decade isn’t the best move. After getting rid of Ruff, which I understand needed to happen – how could he stay? He could have kept a couple of the successful, proven guys that the players respected, liked and helped recruiting. He got rid of Lincoln Riley – who may have left with Ruff anyway. But I don’t get why he put Bennie Wylie on a six month probationary contract…keeping him around seems like a no brainer.
When you’re in management you look for easy wins, and win-win situations – keeping Bennie on was a gimme. That’s what makes me question his judgment. Oh well. Let’s see what comes in tomorrow’s installment of, “As the Weed Tumbles”.

George, there is something wrong with you. You have an anger problem. Seriously. You should see someone.
But Bennie did get a better deal – Tennessee – good for him!! It is definitely our loss. That’s what happens when you don’t offer the right kind of packages to keep proven winners around.

Big “T”…….. if you actually get a chance to know Craig James you will know he’s not a demon at all. He’s a decent family man, who was once a great athlete. He is a successful business man…… and did this on his own.
You probably don’t know Craig………. and to call him spineless, deceptive, etc is simply irresponsible. “Senator” James will represent Texas very well……..
And let’s not forget……. it was Leach who was responsible for this mess…….. not Craig, not Adam. (How can anyone not see that locking an injured kid in a shed is wrong???)

Football scoop is reporting the following TTU coaches will be joining Ruffin at ECU
former Texas Tech offensive grad assistant Brandon Jones = ECU staff as offensive line coach.
Clay McGuire (former Texas Tech running backs)
Dennis Simmons (former Texas Tech wide receivers).
Plus you add Lincoln Riley and Brian Mitchell and ii sounds like TTU part 2

@Jason55 – I didn’t say demon… and no I don’t know him personally. I do know of him through several sources. One being my HS buddy’s older brother who was a defensive end at SMU during the CJ period. That being said, one doesn’t need to personally know a rapist, murderer, thief, etc. to call him for what he is. His actions speak for themselves, as well as his track record.
He won’t get my vote. If elected, I hope he doesn’t take that enabling mentality with him to congress. Lord knows we have enough of it as is. Maybe I should run against him in the fututre and upon completion of my military service to this country (currently at 20+ years).
Yes, ML made a poor decision wrt AJ. However, had CJ not been trying to relive his glory days through his son and hovering over every move the coaches made, he might have had a good enough relationship with the coaching staff to resolve the issue w/o threats, etc. In fact, the incident would have more than likely never occurred.
I have a son playing several sports, and I encourage him to earn his playing time by working harder than the others. “If you want to be the best, work harder than the rest”. I do not hover over his coaches and try to influence them. I do know that in the same situation, I would not handle it in the manner he chose.
I extend my support to the current coaching staff and hope they have as much success as the past 10 years. I extend my thanks to coach ML and wish him much future success. I withdraw my hand of respect from the James family. They will reap what they sow!

Adam James will have a permanent scar for this. It will be with him for life. He doesn’t realize it now and his parents had no idea it would evolve into this. When he enters the world of employment, he will be remembered for being the 21 year old 6’3″ 220 lb. man who was escorted out of the daylight by an athletic trainer and who’s father then allegedly threatened to sue a university who’s actions then resulted in a successful collegiate coach being fired.
You’re an employer with several qualified candidates to choose from, knowing this history, are you swayed when offering employment to the most responsible and trustworthy applicant?

Techster You have made several very good points. Do not pay any attention to Jason55. He is a blow-hard conservative who cannot rebut a comment. He has no idea who I am, but he says I have never had any job above entry level jobs. This is in response to a remark I made about the three muscatels (Myers, Bailey and chancellor Kent (republican lobbyist) Hance). Hiks idea of rebuttal is to make a cutting remark whether it has any basis or not. You appear to think the same way that I do and that is that we must get rid of the administrators at Tech if Tech is ever to amount to anything. Unfortunately, all of the administrators have been appointed by governor perry who will not admit to his political mistakes. I n order to replace chancellor Kent (republican lobbyist) Hance and get rid of his appointee Alberto (I can’t remember) Gonzales who makes $850.00 per class hour, we have to replace governor perry. I personally think Bill White, the former mayor of Houston, will make a great governor. If someone cannot vote for White, they can vote for anybody but perry. Jason55 told me that White would take his gun away. B&*(^S$%#@,m the governor of Texas cannot take his gun away, even if it is good for his neighbors. Amendment 2 is part of the United States constitution and President Obama will not let anybody ruin the constitution.

according to another web site Coach Tub has already hired former Auburn and TCU S and c coach Joe Walker. Didnt even have to wait 24 hrs. This is kinda like us setting a guy up with a friend for a date who is a “knockout”! But they just didnt click. He obviously did not share a chemistry for whatever reason, so what the heck it is his team and he wants to move forward asap. So lets get on board with the new hire who obviously was about to be hired anyway.

Here is the background on Joseph Walker, the new hire to replace Bennie Wylie. It’s clear to see that Titanic Tuberville likes to trade down and he has done in coaching hires, recruiting and now the strength and conditioning coach who was the S&C coach for Baseball and Softball and an assistant for football at Auburn. This new guy could not carry Bennie’s jock strap.
Responsibility:
Strength and Conditioning Coach for Baseball. Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for football. Director of Sports Nutrition for football. Strength and Conditioning Coach for softball.
Professional Experience:
Comes back to Auburn after serving as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at TCU from May 2005 to January 2007. Served as an intern strength and conditioning coach at Auburn from January 2003-May 2003 and as a graduate assistant from May 2003-May 2005. Also served as an intern strength and conditioning coach at Kansas State from May 2002-August 2002 and at Pittsburgh from May 2000 to July 2000.

“Maybe” – Wylie was supposed to get a big raise next season from Leach. With him gone Wylie told Tuberville about the agreement and TT said to “give me six months” and I’ll see if I can do it. In the meantime Dooley calls and say he will start him at a higher pay than TT is even trying to get for him.
Tennessee is an established SEC football powerhouse. Wylie gets to prepare a team to play Florida, Georgia, South Carolina every year and Alabama, Auburn and LSU every other year. Knoxville is a great town, the UT campus is nice and the fans are great. Of course there is that god-awful color of orange they have to wear. The scarlet and black are so much better looking, but knowing you only get to prepare for TX and OK and Nebraska every so often just does not sound as impressive.
This may have just been too good an opportunity for him to pass up and TTU could not match. I wish him well

Jason, it is obvious you hate Coach Leach but you have no proof of your accusations. The fact here is that James was never “locked” anywhere and could have left at any time. His injury is suspect at best and fraudulent at worst. There is no physical evidence he had a concussion. Word on the street is that he had a hangover and Coach Leach knew of this. The punishment was for disobeying team rules, not for having a supposed concussion. The punishment did no harm (doctors words, not mine).
But none of this matters. If the real facts are allowed to come out, we will find that Tech planned to fire Leach all along and simply used the James incident as a catalyst. This became evident to Coach Leach during the supposed investigation which is why he reacted the way he did.
You must have a relationship with the James family. Please spill the beans and tell us all about it.

Maybe that’s why he didn’t care if Wylie stayed ot not.

Folks you have to understand that Jason55 is just a step ahead of the rest of us. He’ has ridden corporate jets for decades and has little time for those that are entry level in the workforce. He has led those among us,worthy of his choosing, to great universities across the state. He has become a master of all subject matter concerning this sports blog. Now, when in so short of time he was asking questions, he is the unquestionable authority. It’s rather hard to believe that a man of his stature and importance has found time from his daily routine to enlighten those of us who think small.
