Fabulous 44: Tech in line to land state’s top high school quarterback
Scotty Young isn’t due to arrive at Texas Tech until the summer. When the quarterback from Denton Ryan gets to campus, his reputation will have preceded him.
It can be summed up in these words: In high school, he was nearly as good as Graham.
Young threw 65 TD passes his junior year and 64 his senior season. Those are numbers to which Texas Tech followers can relate, given that Graham Harrell tossed a single-season state record 67 touchdown passes at Ennis High School.
Harrell went on to throw a major-college record 134 TD passes for Tech. Even though Mike Leach is no longer on board to coach him, much will be expected from the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Young since new Tech coach Tommy Tuberville has promised to keep the Red Raiders in a pass-first mentality.
Young is the best quarterback recruit in the state this year, according to Austin-based analyst Randy Rodgers, and a headliner on the Avalanche-Journal Fabulous 44 and Top 100 lists of Texas’ most-wanted recruits.
“At quarterback, Scotty Young is the guy,” Rodgers said. “In the old Pirate offense, he was the perfect guy. He can make all the throws. He’s been playing it (in the spread). He’s got a good arm. He’s a good athlete. I just think he’s the best guy.”
As usual, Texas high schools are serving as a major supplier of talent – to schools in state and nationwide – at positions across the board. Rivals.com ranks eight Texas schoolboy stars among the top 50 recruits in the nation. Two of those, Plano West defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat and Temple speed back Lache Seastrunk, remain uncommitted a little more than a week out from the Feb. 3 national signing day.
Also among those eight are wide receivers Mike Davis from Dallas Skyline and Darius White from Fort Worth Dunbar, offensive linemen Luke Joeckel from Arlington and Jake Matthews from Sugar Land Elkins, defensive end Reggie Wilson from Haltom and linebacker Tevin Jackson from Garland.
Davis, White and Wilson are all University of Texas bound. Joeckel and Matthews are committed to Texas A&M.
It’s shaping up as a banner recruiting year for both the Longhorns and the Aggies. UT has 18 commitments from the Top 100, but 14 of those are Fabulous 44 members. The Longhorns lead in both categories, followed by the Aggies, who have 17 Top 100s, including eight from the Fab 44.
The Longhorns are scoring across the board with five Fab 44 recruits who play in the defensive front seven, four who line up at receiver, a couple of defensive backs and one each at quarterback, running back and in the offensive line. The running back is Traylon Shead from Class 1A Cayuga, who made a run at Kenneth Hall’s 56-year-old national career rushing record. Shead finished with 10,291 yards – second all-time to the “Sugar Land Express”’ 11,232 – but Shead did set a state record with 146 touchdowns.
The Aggies helped themselves most in the offensive line, where they have pledges from Fab 44 honorees Luke Joeckel, Matthews and Cedric Ogbuehi and two more Top 100s. A&M’s class also includes hugely productive Denison running back D.J. Jones, a two-time 2,000-yard rusher, and Cedar Hill’s Ben Malena, who Rodgers regards as the top back in the state. Malena was bothered by injuries in 2009 after a 2,200-yard, 35-touchdown showing as a junior.
Rodgers said he likes Malena’s compact build and variety of skills.
“I thought he was the best receiver of any of the running backs in Texas, and he can also be a kickoff return guy,” Rodgers said. “I think he’s a really good get for Texas A&M.”
In addition to Young, Tech’s other Fab 44 pledge is defensive end Jackson Richards from Southlake Carroll. Richards was the first recruit to pledge to the Red Raiders for 2010, and then he went out and had a strong senior season, getting credit for 65 tackles, nine sacks, seven pass breakups and five caused fumbles.
Rodgers, a former assistant at the universities of Illinois and Texas, mentioned Richards just behind Jeffcoat and Wilson as the best at his position.
“He’s really a good athlete,” Rodgers said. “I think he has to gain some weight – he hasn’t gotten much bigger from his junior year to his senior year. He’ll need a redshirt and some intensive time in the weight room, but he’s a good athlete and he’s been playing at a very high level. Not many kids are good enough to play at Southlake Carroll as freshmen on the varsity, which he did.”
Sulphur Springs offensive tackle Beau Carpenter and Round Rock Stony Point defensive back Desmond Martin also are part of the Red Raiders’ class, and both are state Top 100 choices. Martin made 43 tackles and broke up six passes this season.
“I see him as a safety,” Rodgers said. “He’s a rangy guy who I think will put on more weight, and he’s already a good hitter.”
Though still trying to snap a long streak of losing seasons, Baylor is making some recruiting noise this year. The Bears have important pledges from two recruits in their back yard: Hewitt Midway safety Ahmad Dixon, who is ranked the No. 15 player in the nation by ESPN.com, and Waco Connally offensive lineman Troy Baker, who at one time was pledged to Tech.
Baker is a Fab 44 choice.
“I think he’s a really good player,” Rodgers said, “because he’s 6-foot-7 and has a great wing span.”
Not every Top 100 prospect is gobbling up attention. Waco punter Kollin Kahler might be headed the small-school route, though not for lack of ability, Rodgers said.
“I think Kahler is as good a punting prospect (in Texas) since Justin Brantly,” said Rodgers, referring to the punter who averaged 44.3 yards from 2005 through 2008 at Texas A&M. “He’s a thunder foot.”

Once Scotty Young sees Graham Harrell is on board at OSU…..look for him to change his committment. After all he only has the word of tubbs that the spread will be run at Tech. If anybody is willing to research it they will find that Tubbs last attempt at running the spread was in 2008, the year he got fired at Auburn and…the spread was unsuccessful

Awful lot of kids picking Okie State over Tech. The evolution from the Red & Black Air Raid to the Orange & White Air Raid has begun. The hiring of TT was the beginning of the end of our unique niche. Some of you believe Tech & TT can recruit with OU, UT, NU & A&M for athletes that fit a generic spread. WRONG! They will wipe the floor with us. Tech had to keep it’s identity for future success, and we gave it away.

This is a great recruit, red shirt and he will be a 4-year starter that will produce.
TECHSTER… Tommy’s departure from AU is well documented, inserting the spread offense was NOT the reason for his departure, you need to do further research yourself! Your pessimistic attitude will get you fired one day, just like Leach!

Tech is pulling in some talent from Florida. It’s quite possible that Tech’s reputation is better out of state than it is in state.

Its still all about evaluating talent. Most of these recruiting list have never seen the players that they are touting (except Rogers)–ESPN hasn’t and neither has the AJ in its Fab 44. How many of the 300 prospects has Texas Football ever actually seen. They all have it on good authority. Evaluating talent is an art. Leach was very good at it. TT has a good track record as well. But you have to remember its not a track meet or a weight lifting contest, its football. And some like Crabtree, Harrell, and Welker are just better players. Where are Fozzy Whitacre (UT) and McGuffey (MICH & ???) supposedly the best backs in Texas just a couple of years ago. Would you rather have them or Batch? This recruiting stuff is just entertainment. Enjoy it, talk about it, and imagine the possibilities, but keep it in perspective. We will all know in a few years.

We need to see some recruits from Alabama area as well as the Troy State area that the coaches were in contact with before the switch. We need to pull those commitments from their verbals just like our are being pulled from us. Auburn area should be familiar to Tubbs. We cannot pull from UT, TAMU, OU and OSU. Too many nay sayers until Tech proves that Tubbs can win at TT.

While you make a good point, I assure you the numbers are well in favor of the athletes who are on this list. If you take any starting O or D from a premier college program, there will easily be over 51% “Top 100″ players being represented. Statistically speaking you have a better chance at success with more atheletic and talented players and those players with the exception of a small amount freak outliers are what make the difference between eliete teams and ho-hum teams. Obviously there are diamonds in the rough out there, but these days those are harder to come by with every major HS program in the state being monitored by websites, newspapers, and college scouts. To sum it up, you stand a way better chance of bringing in “top tier” talent if you recruit from these “Top 100″ lists and you have a much better chance of winning with better players. Its not rocket science.

Techster you need to read up on football. Harrell is not a coach at OSU. As a favor to H he is going to work with the QB’s on the spread offense this spring. Harrell reports to training camp in June you know up way up North in the Canadian league.

I’m a little nervous… There aren’t many players on either list choosing Tech.
Hopefully Scotty Young, Kadron Boone, Shawn Corker, and the other great athletes stay with us.
However, I could see us losing 3-4 more before signing day. Hopefully not.
Oklahome State was very smart hiring Dana Holgorsen as their OC… TT should have interviewed him.

Dana gets fired when Mike Gundy gets fired, and it won’t be long. T Boone hasn’t invested millions in OSU for third- and fourth-place finishes in the Big 12 South. Mark it down. One more disappointing (Uh oh. Pistol Pete’s rebuilding in 2010) season and he’s gone.

I didn’t say inserting the spread at Auburn in 2008 was the reason tubberville got fired. You are misreading or interpreting, or just making stuff up to suit yourself. What i said was…and i’ll state it more simplistically for you
The last year he attempted to run the spread was in 2008, at Auburn. He was unsuccessful in his attempt to run it then and at the end of that unsuccessful 5-7 year he was fired!

We’re assuming our offense will not be the complete “spread” as Leach ran. If this is the case, fantastic we need a more balanced attack! I don’t recall a pure spread team being in the top five in the country on a consistent basis. No battle is won by air only, remember only three things happen when you pass the ball and two of them aren’t good! I’m not saying abandon the spread, but add a running game!
Hopefully the new staff will spread our recruiting wings out, being one dimensional has got us this far, now it’s time to make it to the top!

Adam james wouldn’t step foot in my fraternity. We are based on truth and honesty and believe that the only future this great school has is with massive restructuring in the administration .
We believe that the football program and every other program at Tech is on the downhill slide and will NOT recover until the administration has been overhauled hence, ” MOVING ON ” is not in the vocabulary until said overhaul has been completed.

From what I saw of Troy’s offense in the GMAC Bowl, Neal Brown runs a very similar offense to Leach, only he likes to get his QB out of the pocket a little more (rollouts, QB draws, etc). As for the immediate future, this leads me to believe Sheffield will be the guy next year. But for 2011 and after, I’m thinking Jacob Karam might be the guy. He’s a mobile QB who can make plays with his legs…he’s been described as a slightly taller and more talented version of Todd Reesing. Scotty Young, on the other hand, is strictly a pocket passer…not mobile. Karam and Young might have some heated QB battles at Tech in a few years.

Yep. It’s always been this way and yet we still manage to compete. With Leach before and now Tuberville, the only difference between our past and future championships is to get a few more of these types of players. If all Red Raiders would get on board and support the team and the new football coach regardless of what you think of the Administration, it would certainly help. Recruits want to know they are coming to a place with great fan support. Too many people who are upset about Mike getting fired continue to bash Tuberville and announce they will not be supporting the program. That is the wrong approach and sends the wrong message to recruits. And while I think the vast majority of Red Raider fans do support the new coach even though they may be upset with Administration, it is the vocal minority that continues to make a bad impression. I think it is necessary to continue to press the Administration for answers and accountability but it is equally necessary to support this coach and team.

One of the biggest weak points of Leach era was that Texas Tech was never really get into the cream of recruitment within the state of Texas. But Leach always thought things out of the box, and we have developed a national pipeline of highly recruited players instead, without being dependent on Texas schools. Many High school coaches in Texas infact complain now that Tech does not recruit enough from the state and need to do so more, yet in the early years of Leach era these same coaches were sending their 3 and 4 stars to UT and A&M and were offering only 2 stars and a few 3 stars to Tech, I think this pissed Leach off and he developed a national recruitment pipeline instead.

Currently in the NFL the majority QB’s are from the following leagues (with the exceptions of 8 DIV. II QBs)
ACC 6
Big 12 7 (2 UT, 2 Iowa St., A&M, KSU, and Missouri – Only Vince young is a starter & Chris Simms is 3rd string
Big East 7
Big Ten 11
Conf. USA 9
Mtn. West 8
Pac 10 13
SEC 9
WAC 4
Combine Independents, Sunbelt, and Mid American leagues for another 6
Yes Texas has 2 QB’s in the NFL so does Marshall and Tulane

My Leach did his job. He got Tech to be a respectable team. After 10 years we only got to the Cotton Bowl, and we lost to a SEC team. Now we got a great SEC coach. The Big 12 has been behind the SEC as far as talent and bowl record are concerned.
OU lost to Florida (2008)
Tech lost to Ole Miss (2008)
Texas lost to Alabama (2009)
OK State lost to Ole Miss (2009)

Hargrave Military Prep School (Chatam,Virginia) head coach Robert Prunty will be in Lubbock on Friday – Punty will be hired to coach outside linebackers here at Texas Tech.
So do you think he is bringing the LB with him?
Ride Raider Ride,
Either (hopefully) he is bringing a stud LB with him, OR Willis (or even Tubes) knows him from the past and want to bring him up.
I just have to think there are a lot of very qualified unemployed college LB coaches, or very qualified employed LB coaches at smaller schools that would be more qualified than Prunty in experience, recruiting and the college game.
So hopefully the hire is a package deal and he brings a player.
It will be interesting to see if Jim Jeffcoat’s son Jackson goes to play for his father at UH, or if he goes to another bigger name school. I wonder how UH coach Sumerlin would feel if his own asst coach could not deliver his own son?

It is truly a unique talent. Remember Tyrone Thurman? He was 5’3″ and 135 lbs. out of Midland Lee. Couldn’t buy a scholarship outside of Tech. Only became an All-American – that’s all! Zach Thomas from White Deer, Tracy Saul from Idalou. The list goes on and on. A&M keeps on grabbing the big city newspaper lists. I’ll take our record against them over the past ten to fifteen years. With the exception of this year’s unprepared debacle. Leach really got us ready for that one didn’t he?

Techster if you showed up it would be the last time you were ever able to put together a full sentence. You would have to transfer to the state school to finish your education.
