Dallas lineman switches from Tech to Oklahoma State

Dallas Madison offensive lineman Javius Townsend, who committed to Texas Tech in early September, said he changed his pledge to Oklahoma State on Monday after a weekend campus visit.

Townsend said Tech’s recent coaching change and the departures of several staff members, including head coach Mike Leach and assistant Brian Mitchell, influenced his decision.

“I had a special relationship with every one of those coaches — coach (Matt) Moore, coach Mitchell and coach Leach,’’ Townsend said. “It wouldn’t be the same as it would if they were all still there.’’

Townsend, a 6-foot-4, 297-pound tackle, said the new staff had continued to recruit him, but he decided OSU suited him better.

“Oklahoma State coaches, over this short time, I formed a bond with them,’’ he said.

You cannot blame him or any of these kids. He is making a decision that will affect 5 years of his life.

Look at it from his football point of view: 1) Turnover at every Coaching Position at the tech program, except 1, 2) Unproven (at Tech) new group of Coaches, 3) Major Bad Publicity, 4) Fan base in turmoil, 5) Limited time to evaluate. Versus looking for a school that is stable, stand behinds and supports their coaches, coaches appear that they will be there in 5 years, no recent bad publicity or stigmas. (I am not focusing on OSU here, it could be any school). New facilities are great and all, but a 300 lb weight set is the same in lubbock as in every other city in the USA.

Personally, If I were a freshman or sophomore, I would consider transferring just to get away from this life long stigma that was created. For a football player that may mean losing a year of eligibility. And I hate to say it, I am a tech alum. Tech is a great school, however, the reality is there are lots of great schools that will not have the current stigma, especially for a football player. Why jump into this mess when you dont have too?

Before this debacle, my A&M friends had essentially stopped talking to me about football because they were embarassed. My UT friends were always cautious when the water cooler talk was about the Tech v UT game. Unfortunately, after this recent debacle, that is no longer the case.

Bennie ….bring on the name calling I can handle it. The reality of the situation is that Tech was a threat. Right now, though, Tech really doesnt know what it has. Everyone is speculating. You are free to belittle another school’s coach (only weakens your argument and makes the school look bad), the athletic prowess of a student athlete as compared to other members on the roster (only weakens your argument and makes the school look bad), or even me (I dont care…so its pointless). Coaches select kids to fit their system, he may not have fit in this one but i doubt that was the case. And to answer your question, I did graduate from tech… a couple of times, was even an employee at one time…Not that any of that matters in this discussion. What your really upset about is that you feel rejected…because this young man rejected Tech. Be positive, there is now one more spot open that this coach gets to fill into his system. The only problem that I see from coaches perspective ….is the limited time and opportunity for the coaches to play the recruiting game.

Rejection? Oooooh… that’s a stinger! The way we like to handle rejection is when Colby Whitlock smacks a UT def lineman in the mouth so hard it knocks him 3 or 4 yards deep and then he tackles the running back for a safety! Rejection? This shows a chink in the armor and only the beginning. We’ll be 2-3 years behind OSU before those relationships are firm.

It is the beginning of mediocrity inching its way back to Tech. Oh, so you all know what Scotty Young’s plan B was-you guessed it-Okie State. There are a number of former players PO’d at Tech and feel no allegiance to their Alma Mater. In fact, you might see another Tech former player joining GH on the OSU staff real soon.

This is going down like Patton defeating Rommel in North Africa. When asked how he did it: Patton stated that he read and studied Rommel’s book on armor warfare.

As to this player not coming to Tech, I would have thought his first and foremost bond would have been with the offensive line coach rather than the head coach and one of the defensive coaches. But the changing of oral commitments happens often even where there are not coaching changes.

But to my real opinions, as an ’02 grad I watched the football transition from less than mediocre to selling out games and beating UT and OU on a regular basis…what I hate now is that our recruiting class was in the top 25 and now, i’d bet we barely break the top 50. I don’t blame this all on Tuberville, i believe he’s just the pawn for the admin and craig james. However, Tubbs has made his share of mistakes, IMO, by passing on Holgorsen for OC (possibly the best OC in the country) but probably did so due to the admin telling him the didn’t want anything that looked like leach, smelled like leach, played for leach, or supported leach in any way (Cumbie kept his mouth shut, smartly and he’s a GA, it would’ve been pretty sad if Tubbs let him go), Moreso, we allowed Holgorsen to go to a division rival who just got thru beating us, what makes us think that they won’t do it again next yr? And now we are not only losing recruits because of the coaching change but our alumni and players don’t even want to come back here…I think that says a lot for the state of our program!

Last, I would like to challenge Myers to schedule ECU, not only so that Ruffin and Riley can get a chance to prove what they are really worth, but also so the fans can show R and R how much we appreciate what they did for us and wish them the best of luck. I bet, tho Myers would not even dare think about this…afraid we’d actually lose!

I will ALWAYS support TECH, but the admin has to go

There is no way they can continue to claim to be Tech fans and supporters with the stuff they post. I think we will win the Big 12 South and maybe even the entire Big 12 this fall. “

    Agreed.

Techster said: “Raider4ever On the contrary….The TRUE Tech fans want the corruption Gone so we CAN have a football program! So we CAN build a tradition So we CAN keep a coach and let him be allowed to COACH It’s really plain and simple…join forces and let a majority rule…oust the corrupt administrators and THEN ….”move on ” Wreck Em….when we can ”

We do have a football program and we do have traditions. Honor does not mean you get to put down the football team to further your other goals. You can support the football team while moving to “oust the corrupt administrators”. Or at least if you’re smart, you can. As far as a majority, your opinion is at best part of the vocal minority. Even Team Leach says they do not support bashing of the existing coach or program. Raider4ever nailed you perfectly in his comments above.

“Brandon said: . . .However, Tubbs has made his share of mistakes, IMO, by passing on Holgorsen for OC. . .And now we are not only losing recruits because of the coaching change but our alumni and players don’t even want to come back here…I think that says a lot for the state of our program!”

FYI, there was a lot of interest in bringing Holgerson back to Tech but after his letter in support of Coach Leach, it wasn’t going to happen. Same with Harrell. Not Tuberville’s fault, unfortunately just the way it is. We may be losing some recruits because of the coaching change but some of that is due to the coaches re-evaluating. For example, some of the recruits who have de-committed are not even being pursued by the current staff. One that is still wanted by the current coaches is the recruit who switched to OSU. But these types of things happen every year regardless of coaching changes so no one can really say for sure Leach would have kept the entire class together. Appreciate your comments.

Even if the administration is cancerous evil the bottom line that is indisputable is this:

IF LEACH HAD NOT TRIED TO HUMILIATE ADAM JAMES(even though he is a class A jerk) THEN LEACH WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN SUSPENDED AND WOULD STILL BE OUR COACH TODAY! FOR THIS IMMATURE CHILDISH ACTION LEACH STARTED THE ENTIRE INCIDENT THAT ENDED WITH HIS FIRING.
    ——————————————————————————————————————————

While I agree there were things Coach Leach could have done differently, it’s doubtful in my mind that any discipline toward Adam James would have been below the radar. Craig James had an agenda … you don’t hire a nationally prominent PR firm to file complaints against a coach.

I accept Coach Leach is gone … that’s simply the truth. What is also the truth is that there is much left unknown. Permitting a possible “cancerous evil” to remain in the administration is a disservice to the University, its students, and alumni. I really have no care regarding the financial payouts that may or may not be awarded, but any (if any) underlying deals, secret handshakes, improper application of contract terms, and agendas need to be exposed. If Tech can’t be 100% positive that its leadership is above reproach, then it’s time for new leadership.

The Coach Leach firing is just the platform … the integrity of Texas Tech is the subject. Mediation with a “closed settlement” may qualify in legal circles as an expression of justice but I find such a deal to be far from the best result when it comes to improving the quality of the institution.

I’m opposed to doing this, but RaiderBacker…if you hadn’t …ed my words you would have understood that I hold relatively similar beliefs to what you stated because what you omitted stated that I didn’t think the hiring or lack thereof was not all of Tubbs fault cause he

“probably did so due to the admin telling him they didn’t want anything that looked like leach, smelled like leach, played for leach, or supported leach in any way”

My point which you point out very well…is that the state of the program is in trouble if we have our admin directing who we should and shouldn’t hire as coaches because of their affiliations or beliefs as opposed to the quality of the personnel…whats next, are they going to be dictating who he is recruiting to his team??? Who really has control in this situation? I’m sure this wont get read however, bc i’m a couple days behind sorry….maybe i can make my point elsewhere for you.

ENOUGH OF THIS NEGATIVISM! You people who claim that you are going to jerk your season tickets and pull your support for the program – ____ YOU and GO TO HELL! You never were a Red Raider and you must have just bought a Tech T-shirt at Wal-Mart. This program has never been mediocre and never will be. The idiots around here who think so are both ignorant and unintelligent. What are you going to do? Become a damned OSU Aggie or transfer your loyalty to Baylor or TCU? GOOD RIDDANCE!!! The reason why our program has risen to the level that the 2 words “National Championship” can even be mentioned is due to the overwhelming support that the program has increasingly received from all Red Raiders. More money for facilities. More money for recruiting. More money for – yes – COACHES. We have continued to beautify and update our campus. We are on the verge of becoming a Tier One Research Institution. Yes, there is controversy, but now is the time to re-dedicate our support for a football program that needs solidarity among fans. Every time you say something negative, you can blame yourself for the loss of a recruit. This doom and gloom is making me sick to my stomach. The fact is, our football team was less affected by all the happenings than the fans were. They went out and won a bowl game while all of you idiots were yelling about how you were through buying seats at Jones! Keep your sad B.S. to yourself! You are only hurting the program and the University. This program is top flight. Just ask Spike Dykes if he would have been able to use all this extra support and cash. He took us to bowls and beat Texas and A&M on a regular basis with good ol’ West Texas boys and worn out facilities. He would have loved to make the kind of money the present day coaches are making. Speaking of money, you have to give Kent Hance credit for at least two things no matter what else you say about him. He has set records for fund raising every year he’s been in office. Our enrollment, even with increased admission standards, has also set records under his watch. Like Baron Batch said after we won the Alamo Bowl, Mike Leach is gone and it matters not why anymore. Either back this new coach and back our program GUNG HO or haul ass and shut up!

To TTruth: you don’t know squat about our history. Our old “grind it out offense” produced two Doak Walker award winners. You weren’t in the stands back in 1976 when we beat Texas(obviously). How about that A&M game when Zach Thomas picked off a pass and ran in for a touchdown to win the game? You obviously weren’t there. I went to my first Tech game in 1965. I’ll never forget it. I was in the first grade. We beat Arkansas on the last game of the season. They came in here #6 in the nation. They had finished #2 in the nation the year before. It was that game that inspired me to learn all about the game of football. My parents started taking me regularly in 1968 as long as my grades in school were kept up to a level that they felt was representative of my abilities. Except for a few years when I lived in Dallas after graduating from Tech in 1982, I have rarely missed a game. We have had some awesome crowds and games through the years. TTruth, maybe you should take some classes at North Texas and become a Mean Green fan. They could use a few uninformed fair weather people like you. We don’t want your ass around here.

Rarely post but this crap needs to stop…Crap from the Admin…Crap from the fans….Crap from the crybabies. If anyone was here in the 60′s and I was…Tech was mediocre….the stadium might be full but by the beginning of 2nd half…after the band marched…the stands were largely empty….Tech has been the “Red Faiders” not Red Raiders on many occasions through the years…an embarrassment to all for their failure to show up in the last quarter or at all against ranked teams. Be that as it may, Tech deserves better…better from their administration, better from their coaches, better from their fans! So, Lead…Follow…or Get Out of the Way, so someone else can. As for Leach…what he did may have crossed the line but not to the extent of what I or others experienced as a players. Adam James is an adult and he and his father should act like adults…if they don’t like what’s going on…pack your bag, get in your car, get on the plane, bus or hitch hike like I did in the 60′s and go where every you want to…there are lot of roads out of the south plains and Tech….take your pick and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!!! PS…take anyone else that doesn’t want to support Tech with you…I am tired of seeing and hearing from them!!! What was the song the Mac Davis sung….”Happiness is Lubbock Texas in your rear view mirror…post that on your bulletin board Greg, Adam, Kent, Gerald and anyone else that thinks they can second guess the coach or coach better than the head coach, who ever they are!

Techster, Please shoot yourself. Oh, if you don’t want to do that, just go down to I-27 at fourth street and run out in front of an 18 wheeler. The university will be grateful for your actions and you will be duly noted. Thank You.

Rob Van Stavern, Go to the official Athletic Site and download the history. The facts speak against you. When you have winning records you are not mediocre. Your heart is in the right place though because people need to back the program or hit the trail. Trivia question: What school has been to the most Sun Bowls since its inception? look through our history Rob and you will see that we are an above average football program and have been since Pete Cawthon.

For all those who want to get a dose of reality: Go to work Monday morning and cuss out your boss. Tell him that you aren’t going to sign the agreement he wants you to sign regarding future procedures concerning your subordinates. Then take off for Arizona to play golf at the end of the day. I’ll bet you a million dollars you won’t have a job the next morning. You won’t have the luxury of a suspension. If you get a suspension and you don’t have enough sense to sit down with your boss and humble yourself a little bit, but you file suit against the company….well you don’t have anyone to blame but yourself. Leach wasn’t fired for the way he handled Adamette James. He was fired for defying the Chancellor by not agreeing to sign a statement regarding future procedures. He got suspended when anyone else in the real world would have already been fired. Even then he could have sat down with Hance and worked things out but he filed suit against Tech instead. Anyone who has ever tried to make a deal in the business world knows he is not going to be successful at closing a deal when he starts talking about attorneys and filing suit to the people he is trying to make a deal with. Much less actually filing suit. I don’t care what school a coach wants to work for he’s always going to have to have respect for the Chancellor and a little bit of humility when he is dealing with that Chancellor. And why not? Who among those who is reading my comments feels that they don’t have to show proper respect where it is due in this world in order to accomplish their goals? I’m saying that they are either only 21 years old and destined to get a bloody nose real soon or they are a person who has never succeeded in this world. That said let’s drop the Leach thing and get behind Tommy Tuberville now!
