Navasota tackle picks Tech

The Navasota Rattlers won 28 games the last three years, all with massive Aleon Calhoun anchoring their offensive line at left tackle.

Eager to play for another team with a similar success rate, Calhoun has made an oral commitment to Texas Tech.

“I like Tech,’’ Calhoun said Friday. “I like the program. It seemed like the school I should sign with.’’

The 6-foot-6 Calhoun said he weighs 330 pounds and figures his quick feet and long arms — not to mention un-coachable size — made him a major-college prospect.

“He’s just an outstanding athlete,’’ Navasota coach Lee Fedora said. “Very seldom do you have a guy that size playing on a Class 3A football team. The type of athlete he is, you can tell — he’s just as athletic on the basketball court. He’s a young man with a lot of potential, a lot of upside. And he’s played in the spread offense — that’s what we do — so he moves well.’’

Navasota went 9-4, 10-1 and 9-3 the last three seasons, losing in 2007 to Liberty Hill and in 2009 to Gilmer, both eventual state champions.

According to the Rivals.com recruiting service, Calhoun also had scholarship offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Southern Mississippi and Texas A&M.

Though Tech made a coaching change at the top two weeks ago, Calhoun said offensive line coach Matt Moore, a holdover, offered him a scholarship during Calhoun’s junior year.

“He’s had a lot of people after him, a lot of written offers,’’ Fedora said. “Then (Tech coaches) made a visit to him, kind of a surprise visit to me, and he called me the next day and said, ‘Coach, that’s where I want to go.’ ’’

Calhoun said he has not yet met freshman eligibility requirements.
