Craig James says son to continue on Tech football team
BY ENRIQUE RANGEL / A-J AUSTIN BUREAU
AUSTIN – While hundreds of Mike Leach supporters lashed at Texas Tech officials Thursday in Lubbock, in Austin Craig James said his family has no regrets and his son, Adam, will continue his education at Tech and keep playing football.

James
“He is in school,” Craig James said. “He is working out. He loves Texas Tech.”
Craig James said his family did what any other family would have done under similar circumstances. The James family complained about the head football coach’s order to put Adam, a wide receiver, into a dark shed when Adam had a concussion. Leach was subsequently suspended and fired.
“Any parent would have done what we did regardless of the consequences, and I would do it again,” said James, a former Southern Methodist University football player and now sports analyst at ESPN. “And however that impacts anything that I do in my life is inconsequential. I did what was best, what we had to do for our son.”
James was the luncheon keynote speaker at a legislative forum sponsored by the think-tank Texas Public Policy Foundation. He declined to comment on what Leach’s attorney and supporters allege: That he lobbied Leach and even the administrator to get more playing time for Adam.
Yeah, he did what any parent would do…contacted a PR firm to determine how to handle his son’s concussion. Sure little baby james likes texas tech…enough to carry on dad’s legacy of destroying a school’s football team….

Personally, I think this is a good thing. I think Adam showed great character by going to the Alamo Bowl and enduring the boos from the fans. Before anyone blogs about “crybaby Adam,” I want you to take a minute and think about being a 18-19 yr. old kid in college and being at the middle of a huge firestorm simply because you complained about being retaliated against. And then, on top of everything, having a camera in your face for 2 hours at the Alamo Bowl and being booed by tens of thousands of fans. That takes alot of intestinal fortitude. Adam seemed to be very focused on cheering for his team and the players seemed to be in his corner.
I hope he stays and plays and graduates and I, for one, will be cheering for him come August.

I’d think the players would not want a baby like that on the team. he & his daddy are going to realize that from now on, his name will always be tainted…daddy probably thought everyone forgot his little episode at smu, but now, a whole new generation knows about it. same thing will happen with baby, cause someday, he’ll have a baby who won’t want to work at something either, & will do something stupid again, & then another generation will hear all about granddaddy & daddy.

Good, Tech’s Adminstration, Tuberville and James are coordinating all the exciting things to come for Tech Football, a more run oriented attack featuring James at both the HB and Slot receiver, as his father said he is the best receiving option that Tech has, so now they will be able to feature him and with the exposure on ESPN, Tech will have great exposurre, a great season.

Crock, what is the connection between playing football and being a member of the Armed Forces?? Many posts over the last 2 weeks try to make this connection; it just doesn’t stretch. The kid’s in college not the Army. How do you know what kind of a soldier he would make? Leach brought this whole thing on himself and now he’s gone. Adam didn’t make the decision to place himself in isolation over a period of a couple of days. Leach’s own egomanical personality did him in, not the James’ family or the Tech administration. Grab a rifle and head for Haiti for crying out loud.

Stanley, no one has said they want a college kid punished for having a concussion. The issue is that this kid in particular had a very bad history of tantrums, cursing, slamming & breaking doors, & not following directions with the entire coaching staff. He showed up in street clothes & shades (breaking the rules) & was sent to a dark room because he said the light bothered him. He was not locked in, & was told not to go into the electrical closet which was inside one of the rooms, yet he did (breaking another rule) & used his cell phone (breaking another rule) to call his daddy & shoot footage for YouTube. Read the docs filed in court. They claim this is all true based on testimony from different coaches. Adam was not hurt or his condition made worse in any way.

Leach STILL doesnt get it. What he did that caused him to be fired at the end of the day was not following his boss’ directives. Say what you want, think whatever but the facts are undisputed that he told his boss to get F %^&* and refused to do what was asked of him. He even refused to accept suspension WITH pay while this was being investigated. Personally, I think he was ignorant to attempt to punish an injured player. Why not send him HOME ? But whatever, thats almost beside the point, Its over and the questions have been answered. Leach doesnt like the answer thats all. If Tech was trying to cover up anything they wouldnt have allowed the asst coaches to be fired.
Married Team Leach members, try telling your spouse to F off when the next issue comes up. Even if you are on the right side of the issue you likely will be shown the door. Some of you would be saying, you cant do that we had a contract.

There is NO evidence that Adam James had a concussion. Armed with the list of symptoms, any of us could convince a doctor we had a concussion. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself. The fact that concussions in athletes was all over the national news in the week before Adam’s claim kinda makes you go hummm!
I’m a little frustrated that Red Raider fans are turning on each other over this. Team Leach (I am not a member) has made it clear they are supportive of Leach, supportive of Tuberville, but are critical of the administration over the firing and they want the truth to be known. Nothing wrong with that. There are some individual Team Leach members that have said they won’t support Coach Tuberville. That is wrong.
There is nothing wrong with supporting coach Tuberville and being excited at the possibilities he brings to the table.
And there is nothing wrong with being sad to see the existing coaching staff dismantled. What is wrong is to blame Coach Tuberville for bringing in his own staff. He NEVER said he would keep the existing coaching staff despite what some keep saying. I continue to ask for evidence he said this but so far no one has been able to provide it.
I’m sorry to see Mike and the others go and I do want the truth to come out. If the Administration has committed wrong doing, they should be held accountable. As I am a Red Raider first, my butt will be in the seat next season cheering for my team.
That said, I think it best for all involved that Adam James moves on.

I would like to see adam gone and his daddy fired from espn and somehow be held responsible for the penalties that smu recieved. I do have some questions, 1. Is there such a thing as a mild concussion? 2. If adam was hit hard enough to cause this said concussion, exactly when and where did it happen? And why did he not seek treatment right afterward? 3. Was he or was he not locked in an electrical room? The electrical room for a structure like jones stadium would have to be quite large. 4. What are the dismissed trainers and coaches now going to say about the incident now that them potentially losing there jobs is not an issue anymore? Its going to come down to who you believe, the coach that in 10 years has not had any such incidents as this or the punk kid that has of history of being disobedient, unmotivated, untalented and disruptive. I still think MIke was not doing anything wrong and if all the coaches and trainers that didnt stop this maniac from putting adam in the closet for fear of losing their job, look at them now, i know that tub-o-crap isnt having them on his staff. Is Craig James using his son for publicity, or to threaten the University? As in, “If my boy gets hurt I’m
holding Tech responsible”.
Is James hoping Tech fans will boo Adam at the games, so he can recite his whole spiel on national
TV, over & over, ultimately turning Adam into a HERO for staying, under such “adverse circumstances”?
By next football season he will have had time to attend acting classes so his presentation should improve
considerably.
Is he not satisfied, that he was successful in getting Leach fired, so now WE must eat excrement?
Someone tell me, what sort of person have we encountered, here?
Is he insane? Does he believe that this will, in some way, help him in his Senatorial campaign?
Help me people, where is this train headed?
As always I remind everyone,
KENT HANCE IS A RADIOACTIVE SNAKE IN THE GRASS & ALWAYS HAS BEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“I have been in this profession for 40 years—I have never seen a coach do anything near what Coach Leach is said to have done.” Hmmm…40 years. Well thats true, but if it was more than 40 years ago you could refer to some coach named Bear Bryant. He was known for being gentle and coddling players wasn’t he? That’s probably why he has THE major coaching award named after him. For being nurturing.

I was on vacation when Coach Leach was suspended and fired. My co-workers (knowing how much I love my Red Raiders) called me to make sure that I knew about my beloved coach. Of course I knew about it!!! I had heard the BREAKING NEWS on ESPN…how could I have missed it?
My husband and I had stayed home to watch the bowl games and relax for the week. Unfortunately, most of the games were on ESPN and the more the announcers spoke in favor of the James family with their biased reports, the madder I got. About the time I began cooling down, the announcers would repeat theirself. By the second day (at the latest), my blood pressure was rising to stroke levels and we had to change the channel to prevent the stroke.
ESPN, Hance, Meyers, Bailey and the James family ruined my vacation that I barely found time to take. No matter how many great coaches that may stop in Lubbock, none will ever match my love for Red Raider football that existed under Coach Leach.
Thanks to all for the blogs that seem to put all the culprits in their place. At least, I know that I am not the only one that enjoyed pirate football. My husband says that if he was the coach, Amanda James would be played right across the middle on every down!

My source is I was there….Watched the whole thing unfold as I flew in to Lubbock to bring some christmas gifts to coach and the staff and watched this thing unfold over christmas…….
Coach offered in that meeting to have an “exit strategy” where he would be phased out if they did not want him but the phase out would be to keep the program and the Univ from being damaged. He was told they did not want it to come to that and that they did not want media attention……Coach left for San Antonio and …..GOTCHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!Your suspended!!!!!
Regardless of what you think the fact that a 10 year decorated and seniority staff can be thrown out to the media with NO little moderating comments such as “It was a media room” “the shed is where players go to eat ice” should give you all the evidence you need.
My source is Coach……I met 2 years ago as a booster and loaned my corporate jet to the program to help recruiting…..He is not insubordinate and hardheaded! He is a HARD SELL! That means he does not follow BS politiccal crap that is wrong!

I am class of ‘91 and really had never contributed anything to Texas Tech until a friend in Houston introduced me to Leach at Red Raider Club event. I really wanted to help get him in front of recruits after that 11-1 season where millions of people learned who Texas Tech was…..
During this time I heard nothing from the coach about how destructive Jim Sowells , Hance, and Myers were during the contract negotiations…..At a point when Myers deadline approached I directly confronted coach because I wanted to know why he was not taking the $ as I thought it was fair……He then gave “publicly” at a Houston Red raider club meeting when pushed by person the three ridiculous reasons that he would not sign……NONE WERE MONEY like the Admin was portraying.
If you want to research I paid $6000 to run a FULL PAGE ad in the AJ last April4 I think to turn up the heat on the Good ole boys by doing nothing but writing a letter to hance and Myers that made them look as inept and incompetent as they are.
The alumni including Donnie Anderson and other are FURIOUS and boycotting…..But you have Chairman of the Board of Regents and 5 of the 8 that are just Anti-Leach and they wanted him gone……
I think when Craig James caleed the all screamed YATZEE!!!
Nothing will change until Kay Bailey or Rick Perry replaces that BOR! They are how Myers and hance get their power and stay on……
Buy the way…I like to curse Myers but he WAS NOT AND DID NOT want the firing…….That was Little Ceasar himself KEnt Hance who I think has some real problems and being a mental midget is not the least of them!
Thats all……Look or call AJ and look at that full page article……….And read the dallas Morning news website about Sowells wanting “to make it cheap to fire him”! This was after an 11-1 season……..

The “kind of parent” who does what Craig James has done is NOT a parent who thinks first of his child! Period. Either Craig James does not have the intellectual CAPACITY to think about ramifications of his actions & words prior to all he’s said and done, OR he simply does not care that much about his son! NO parent would knowingly put his/her child in the spotlight as Craig James did to Adam, OR he just didn’t care about the ramifications and the effects it would have on Adam. He very likely cares/cared more about the attention it would get for CRAIG, since he is thinking of becoming a dishonest politician.
A “normal” (better word is “typical”) parent, in Craig Jame’s place, would have called his son’s Coach and ask for an appointment with the coach. He would then have brought up his concerns, in the meeting with the Coach, and voiced his concern/complaint about his son being “mistreated.” Only a COWARD would handle this situation as Craig James did……I repeat……ONLY A COWARD!! If Craig James is so innocent and caring and concerned, WHY did he insist on making the issue with his son into a national scandal, one that would cost so many people their jobs??
My answer to that is that Craig James must be a very selfish person, focused ONLY on himself and the attention he can get for HIMSELF. Having worked in the mental health field for many, many years, I can only say that there are a few diagnoses for which Craig James has the necessary symptoms, meaning that he very well could have an illness which contributes to his weird actions. (An inflated ego, narcissism, inability to care about others, etc.) Craig James obviously is willing to sacrifice his own son to gain favor with his “public.”
I don’t believe for a minute that Mike Leach did anything so terrible as to justify his being fired. I believe that his firing was something that Hance, Myers, Bailey, & some board of regents members had been trying to figure out “how-to-do” for at least a couple of years. Further, I believe the main reasons were that Mike Leach simply did not “bow down and kiss the feet” of Myers, Hance, etc. And we ALL know that, in the work-world, there are always politics to be played, and those employees who DON’T give in to the petty politics usually don’t last. It’s a sad commentary on our species (homo sapien) but it is true!
Further, I do NOT believe that Hance, Myers, etc. gave Mike Leach “due process” before they fired him. And I believe this will come out in Court; there are certain things an employer CAN do and certain things an employer CANNOT do. SOME of the employment laws are governed by Federal guidelines/laws, and I also believe THAT will come out in Court (that is, that TTU did NOT comply with the laws). I am no attorney, so don’t bother asking me that question. But my nephew IS…..and we talk a lot about this situation.
I am pleased that an attorney from Houston is also among Mike Leach’s legal team…….it will be less likely that the “good ole boys” from Lubbock will be able to influence the Court to rule in TTU’s favor simply because they “scratch each other’s backs.” (If you don’t believe that happens, you just haven’t worked around the lawyers and court systems. It does not always happen, but it DOES happen).
As for Coach Tuberville, I will sit back and watch and see how he manages the TTU football team. One thing is for sure, if Gerald Myers becomes jealous of his success (as he did Mike Leach’s success), Tuberville won’t last long as Coach……….UNLESS, of course, he is better at “playing politics” than Gerald Myers is (in which case Tuberville can keep Myers, Hance, etc., happy by “brown-nosing” them).
Bottom line, I wish Mike Leach great success in the future, but I don’t really believe he will have a hard time finding another coaching job. He is a very good and talented coach…….AND not all people in this nation will believe what ONE university administration (AKA TTU Admin) and what one power-hungry, power-abusing, narcissistic football commentator (AKA Craig James) “spins” about Coach Leach mistreating a football player……MOST will not believe that anything Mike Leach did would warrant his firing!
Mike Leach, I hope, will learn to look at his firing as an OPPORTUNITY to better himself in the future. People tend to become comfortable in a position when they hold that position (job) for a number of years, and many times they sell themselves short by becoming TOO comfortable. Doors will be opened for Mike Leach that otherwise would not have opened had he remained at Texas Tech. His leaving is Tech’s very HUGE loss.
(The above is my outlook/opinion of the topics I have addressed. Everyone has a right to his/her opinion, and the above narrative reflects MY opinions. I will not respond to any negative comments or challenges to what I have posted, so don’t waste your time).

It is OBVIOUS he is gone, we all know that, but do we just “move on”?! I know it seems there is nothing we can do but, we can be heard and if there are enough of us being heard we CAN bring about change! Popular opinion CAN sway decisions!
I say the LAST thing we need to do is ” Move On” We need to band together and rid our school of the vermin and corruption that is at its very core! At the top!

He made mistakes, his dad made mistakes, we all made mistakes when we were 20! Let it play out. He must change alot to earn playing time. If he does, give him credit. If I thought that my son was being mistreated by the head coach or anyone on the staff then the first person I would talk to would be the head coach and then follow the appropriate chain of command. I spent 10 yrs. in the Navy and chain of command is a very important policy and must be followed strictly. For those of you who are not aware, Craig James is
running for Senator Kaye Bailey Hutchison’s vacant seat which she is vacating so that she can run for governor. In case you haven’t noticed, Gov. Perry, Kent Hance, Gerald Myers and certain Trustees are members of the “good ol’ boys” club and
still have clout left to effect the lives of fans, students and people like me who can’t believe their eyes and ears when it comes
TTU. This has more to do with politics than sports. Yes Mike Leach was quirkey or eccentric, who cares! All the hoopla over the firing only gives credibility, no matter how unfounded, to the administration. Bottom line is, if Craig James is elected to office, TTU will be in his back pocket forever. Adam James is no more than an average player who depends on his daddy to fight his battles. This kid will depend on daddy his whole life instead of being able to fight his own battles and grow up. The one person who is being left out of this stupid incident is Gerald Myers! He brought in Bob Knight, one of his best friends, but
where is Knight now? Meyers also brought in Coach Leach. Do you see a pattern? Meyers is the most efficient suck up in this whole pathetic scenario. He should have swept out with the garbage. It won’t take Tuberville very long to figure out what a bunch of whiners and backstabbers he signed on with. Soon, the “JONES” will be AT&T James Stadium. I liked Sherry’s post as well but I do have this comment to make. Too many of you give Myers far too much credit/blame for his role in Mike’s dismissal. It might be true they didn’t get along all that well but they were not bitter enemies. Myers (as was Bailey) was taken along on this ride by Hance, the Board or Regents and prominent (read “big money”) donors.

It looks like chancellor Kent (republican lobbyist) Hances plans are working out.
As you know the three administrators that were responsible for this whole mess are AD Myers, president Guy Bailey and chancellor Kent (republican lobbyist) Hance who hired Alberto (I can’t remember) Gonzales to teach one course of 15 kids for $100,000.00 a year That is $850.00 per course hour. Nice work if you can get it. In case you do not know who Alberto (I can’t remember), he was the Attorney General under George W. Bush who tried to politicize the justice department (Remember separation of powers in the Constitution) and tried to fire all the U. S. Attorneys that were not conservative republicans. This man lied and refused to testify to congress and resigned under pressure. He was unable to get a job until chancellor Kent (republican lobbyist) hired him.
Now it appears that Craig James’ political career will be starting up if he gets elected. The fact that he has ruined two universities on the way does not mean a thing. If crybaby james can cut it without a boop hoo on his heaad, I think it will be interesting to watch him play.

Ex-SMU football star Craig James unsure of run for office
There are a lot of people that are trying to encourage me, all over the state, he said. But, noting that Hutchison would have to make good on a pledge to step down before her term expires in 2012, he said there is no opening.
James also would not say whether he has met with Gov. Rick Perry and Perry’s advisers to express interest in being appointed to the seat. I’m friends with Governor Perry, James said. He’s a good man. And he knows of my interest in becoming more politically active.

I just called & got transferred 3 different times to different offices…no one claiming to know anything…I’m on hold now waiting to find out how we can leave our “opinion” on the possibility of james getting appointed by the governor.

Sally, they are saying they are not aware of anything…just might mean they aren’t admitting it, but the 3 women I talked to seemed very nice & unaware of that. I told them they may want to let the governor’s office aware of that little rumor floating around & that there are gonna be very ticked off TT fans if that happens.

Is team bleach a synonym for the young republicans who are forming to tyr to save chancellor Kent (republican lobbyist) Hance’s job. I cannot imagine that any student who cares about his school would want this to go away. If you do, go back home and smoke another joint.
I have just heard that chancellor Kent (republican lobbyist) Hance wants to hire Ruffin Mcneil as an assistant athletic director. Great move going from a fired defensive coordinator to assistant AD. Could this be so that Hance can pull the strings on what Ruffin says? Sounds like a payoff to me.

Agreed Perry may not be the smartest, but he is not dumb enough to appoint
a looser like Craig James to a U S Senate seat. In the first place there are
plenty of real politicians for the job with alot more money than James and alot
more brains. I know brains are not a qualification for the job but darn some
are required. You know James has none, none baby. He is just barely making
it on ESPN, you know that’s not rocket science or anything. It is kind’a a finishing
place for some guys, but shi** James started there after a shot pro career.
He better stick with taking care of little Adam, think he’s going to need it all

THe chancellor and company create a position just for Ruff, who I would like to see stay here! The chancellor and company have to do this after shamelessly terminating Leach because he won’t kiss butt to the proper people but let a state fund stealing doctor like Baldwin stay on until he allegedly resigns on his own and what do you get!?! How about inconsistent leadership with not regard for equitable disipline in the system! It’s ok to steal state funds but don’t anger the wrong people or you’re fired! How are the university’s employees to know how to do their jobs or if the big man at the top is gonna support them when they’re trying to run their departments!?! I hope Ruff takes the job but he better watch his back cause the support is fickle at best as exhibited by the chancellor!

I wish KB Hutch was more conservative, I could get behind her without reservation. The vote she made
recently, to block the health care bill from being read in full, on the floor of the Senate, angered me as
much as this hullabaloo going on in Lubbock. She was the only R to vote against, & if I’m not mistaken
her vote decided the issue. I can just imagine she was out Christmas shopping, the staff called
her back to vote & obviously didn’t tell her to vote yea or nay. She seems to love being on TV, gets inter-
views regularly, but sometimes gets a vacant, deer in the headlights look, when asked about a compli-
cated issues. She’s smiling her great big UT Cheerleader smile, & as the question is asked, her smile
just slowly melts. I apologize to all. I’ll get off my Kay B soap-box RIGHT NOW.

Rugby is, indeed, a great deal more rough-and-tumble than American football.
As for whoever it was that pronounced Rick Perry as a grand governor, which planet do you live upon? Did you not watch him last evening on the televised debate? All he did was smirk and smile. Granted, he has a great smile. And he has great hair, too, but he also has the morals of an alley cat. Ask anyone on his staff. In short, he is a deluxe womanizer.
I know nothing about James and a drinking problem; all I know is that he is using TTU as a stepping stone to a highly prized Congressional seat. Trust me, I shall become politically active, as I never have before, in order to stymie his bid for a U.S. Senator. He has not done one single thing to earn that spot. I just quail at the thought of that totally immoral man trying to say that he represents Texas! I shall personally do everything I can possibly do to stop his bid for Congress, because he is not worthy of the seat.
I hope that cry-baby son sits on the bench for the entire year, without one single playing minute. I sort of feel bad for the kid, because he is only the product of his parentage. Still, though, he should have had better sense than to show up at practice in dress clothes when he had been expressly told not to do so. What arrogance; like father, like son, eh?

No more good-ole-boy talkin’ your way out of it either— HANCE! NO more COVER UP! I say people need to BOOOO hance whenever possible… anywhere he shows his shiny head. I’m disrespectful to him because he is disrespectful to employees... and Coach Leach was not only a great coach, he was an employee deserving respect and the benefit of being innocent until proven guilty.. Hance needs to help the person that was wronged by the Health Science center jerks too… over there, because that was an employee who was mistreated under leadership HANCE SHOULD HAVE RELEASED before the bad guy over there could harm anyone!… Hance needs to undo ALL OF THE DAMAGE that he caused Leach and Leach’s family.. OWN UP! and Hance needs to make things right for Ruffin too. The nerve of that “freak trio” allowing Tubbs to fire Ruffin after the Alamo Bowl. NERVE… did we need yet another huge angry crowd waiting to throw tomatoes on that stupid decision? HANCE… MAN UP and right the wrongs… to ALL, not just the high profile employees! BOOOOOOOOOO HANCE and the FREAK TRIO every chance you get. Show opposition to unfair administration who abuse their employees time and time again. It’s wrong and we won’t stand for it. We will keep writing to officials and keep writing about this until you make this right. You have an obligation to the kids at the school to show them what it’s like to backtrack and RIGHT YOUR OWN WRONGS so that when they are faced with mistakes in the world, they will not just pull the good-ole-boy talk and cover up all the lies at someone else’s consequence. Teach the Tech campus students what it means to go back and make things right. That could be the best lesson they learn at college.
