New coach wants to stay victorious and reunite still-divided fan base

When Tommy Tuberville took over at Auburn in 1999, the Tigers had been 3-8 the year before and last place in the Southeastern Conference West Division.

When he took his first head-coaching job at Mississippi in 1995, the Rebels were coming off a 4-7 season and, because of NCAA sanctions, he began with only 61 players on scholarship.

Tuberville’s new job at Texas Tech comes with a different, if no less daunting, challenge: How to keep a winning program winning while rebuilding bridges with an angry fan base. As Tuberville walked into United Spirit Arena for his introductory news conference Sunday, the Facebook page for those protesting the firing of Mike Leach was steaming toward 60,000 members.

Tuberville said that just means people love the program, but he convinced Tech officials that he was the one to unite them.

“I know a lot of people are disappointed in what happened,’’ he said. “A lot of people probably don’t care who I am. But my job is to get out there and sell this program over the next year. By the time we kick off, I think everybody will be on board.’’

Asked what he’d say to the disgruntled fans, Tuberville said, “I like that people are disappointed. They should be. I’m very disappointed when we lose a game, but it’s not the end of the world, because there is another day.’’

Tuberville will spend the next few days making staff decisions and conducting his first team meeting Wednesday, the day classes resume at Tech.

Beyond securing coaches and learning his players, Tuberville said he’ll make it a priority to engage the fans. The coach who won an SEC championship and won or shared five SEC West Division titles has been described as a CEO type of leader, and he calls himself a salesman.

“I listen to a lot of people,’’ he said. “I will be out selling this program many nights and many days over the next six to seven months until we get to two-a-days, and I’ll let everybody know exactly what we’re doing, exactly what we look like.’’

In addition to someone with 14 years of head-coaching experience, Tuberville brings the program a willing worker in helping polish the image.

“I think Tommy really enjoys that part of coaching,’’ athletic director Gerald Myers said. “He enjoys the public relations. He enjoys the fans. He enjoys the events that go with that.

“But No. 1, he’s a proven coach in the best conference in the country supposedly, arguably. He’s been highly successful in a very competitive conference, and we hope he can duplicate that here in the Big 12.’’

Increasingly over the past decade, Leach’s persona towered atop the program, even turning the Red Raider brand into his personal pirate ship. With the attention he received from “60 Minutes,’’ The New York Times, various ESPN interviews and a “Texas Monthly’’ cover, Leach became more well-known than the players he coached.

Ultimately, a clash with the administration led to his Dec. 30 firing.

Tuberville could be a contrast.

“You’ll never hear me say, ‘This is my team,’ or anything like that,’’ he said. “This is Texas Tech fans’, alumni, students’ and faculty’s team. I’m here, responsible to make sure it grows and gets better.’’

Tuberville said he’ll also try to make it an ex-players’ team. That might stem from the eight seasons he spent as an assistant at Miami (Fla.), where former Hurricanes players remained close to the program.

Growing up in Arkansas and watching Southwest Conference football, Tuberville said mid-’60s Tech star Donny Anderson made a strong impression on him.

“So I’m looking forward to meeting Donny and a lot of the other lettermen that have been a big part of this program and put it where it’s at today,’’ Tuberville said.

With all the hand-shaking and speech-giving Tuberville alluded to, he’ll need energy. But after 13 months off from coaching, Tuberville reiterated Sunday that now is the right time and place to get back in.

“Everybody knows I’ve been out for a year, and I’ve rejuvenated myself,’’ he said. “I’ve been going around trying to learn different things, knowing I was going to get back into the business.’’

Among Tuberville’s duties in the last year was being a contributor to ESPN’s “First Take.’’ He said his wife, Suzanne, asked if he was sure he wanted to take on a head-coaching job again. She reminded him how tough the job can be, especially the first year.

“Getting in, getting arranged, organized, getting people around you that you feel are going to be good for the program, getting everything started with the players and the fans and getting off on the right foot … It’s a long process, but we’ll do it right,’’ he said. “We’re not going to look back.’’

Tuberville was fired from Auburn after the 2008 season with a 5 win and 7 loss record which included only 2 SEC conference wins and a tie for last place in the SEC conference. He tried to install a spread offense with virtually no success, winning the 2 SEC games against losing teams by scores of 3 to 2 and 14 to 12.

The Big 12 will be weak in 2010 and there is no reason whatsoever that if the 2009 Texas Tech coaching staff had been left in place sans Leach, that they would have had an excellent chance of winning the Big 12.

Texas Tech is loaded and does not need to be rebuilt, so anything less than a Big South 12 division title will be an underachievement.

Talk is cheap, so now we will see if the Arkansas salesman is a contender or pretender!

Tuberville was 85-40 at Auburn. What was Tech’s record during that time? Tuberville was out of coaching one season – 2009. The Auburn program was not left for dead and went to a bowl game this year. Team Leach knuckleheads need to find out the real facts, get a life and bury the pirate persona forever. A professional like Tuberville will not stoop to wearing eye patches and pirate hats to gain personal attention.

If Leach hadn’t accomplished all he had, a coach of Tuberville’s caliber would have never given Texas Tech a second thought. He may not be perfect — every coach makes mistakes, but he has proven he can hold his own against the big boys. MAYBE he can do that here — we will have to see. He definitely has the best chance of those willing to put up with this administration.

People who think Ruffin was the answer are simply letting emotion get in the way of reason. How can a coach who was a DC be the head coach when he wasn’t that great at being a DC to begin with? His one win came with someone else’s team — and it was Riley reading Leach’s playbook — not Ruffin. The defense played horribly in the bowl game. A 6-6 team missing 14 players should not have even come close to scoring on us, but they did. And let’s be honest guys — the defense has cost us MANY times before.

I support TTU as an institution, I support the football team, I was in favor of Tuberville over Ruffian. All that being said, I am keenly aware that Tuberville made a pledge BEFORE being hired that he would not change TT offense. He nuanced that comment today by saying that he would add a few wrinkles. I’m all for that—however, he had better make DAMN sure that he keeps coaches from the offense that know what they are doing. HIS old cronies from Auburn did not know how to run the spread offense, and I’m sorry, Tommy, but your one year of trying to get up to snuff while unemployed is NOT enough to sustain what Leach has built.

Now, Tuberville claimes to be a salesman. Well, I want to say right now that all of the snake-oil and smiles that he may have will not blind me nor convince me that hiring outside and unproven offensive coaches is going to improve our team. He has stated that he wasn’t going to mess with the offense and intimated that there would not be many changes. I can understand hiring an OC, but the staff needs to stay…PERIOD!! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. One thing that I cannot stand, and which has riled up the Raider Nation, is the disingenuousness of this administration. They say one thing, back track, restate, and then ask us to believe them. I hope Tuberville does not prove to be in that same category. For SURE, he had better keep Lincoln Riley, because that local boy has got talent!!!

Timing of the firing is totally inconsistent with two other universities’ similar situations (Kansas and South Florida). They actually did investigations, actually found wrong doing, then acted. Unfortunately, Tech fired the wrong guy. They were looking for a reason since the contract renewal. Leach will get a big check when this is done, but like the Duke Lacrosse players, how long will it take for the stain to wear off his reputation? TTU just got blindsided. Tubberville will be running the ball out of the spread. He was on the FOX news today and Chris Level is quoted as saying he wanted to know how big the running backs are are how mobile the quarterback are. He also plans to hire his own offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. The leach air raid is finished. He is a “salesman” remember. The G.O.B. network just got what they deserved today. Salesmen tell people just what they want to hear. Before he was hired “I plan to keep the staff 80 to 90% in tact. At 2:30p.m today

“I’m a believer of having a great offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator,” Tuberville said. “But I also believe in letting them have the opportunity to interview coaches, to make sure that they fit into their beliefs and how they want them to coach, either receivers, running backs, quarterbacks, offensive line.

“So what will happen is my first order of business, as I told the coaching staff last night, the present coaching staff, is that I will hire those two coaches first, and then we will sit down with each coach here on the staff. We will evaluate them and we’ll evaluate other people.”

The new coach did hint that changes to the staff could be in the offing. When asked if any of the coaches currently on the staff will be candidates for the coordinator positions, Tuberville acknowledged that he’s “thought about that” before quickly adding that there are “four or five guys on each side of the ball that are not on the staff that I want to talk to first.”

TTU just got burned and Tubberville will not save the ded raiders. Tech will always be behind UT, OU, A&M. All this move did was give Tech a leg up against Oklahoma State and Baylor. Bob Stoops and Mack Brown do not fear the Red Raiders and the entire Big 12 is excited that they no longer have to play defense on their toes agains the Mad Scientist of Football. Leach will win BCS Championship if secures a job at any of the schools in the PAC 10. Tubberville will not be successful running his schemes will the lower level recruits that he will get at Tech. The SEC is a stronger conference than the BIG 12 and we saw that on Thursday Night at the Rose Bowl. It truly looked like Men amongst boys. TTU has officially taken a step backwards.

Riley did not even call the plays in the Alamo Bowl. Cumbie did. They just did not want to admit that the offense was being run by an unpaid grad assistant. The offense is not calculus. It is a good 5 back pattern offense with QB reads that dictate checks to runs. I like the offense just like everyone else. However, the morons on this site have not been national coach of the year and have no right to dictate what the coach does. If you like the team, buy tickets and come watch…if not, don’t. Tuberville and Tech do not owe anyone any more than that.

Tuberville will put together a nationally recognized set of coordinators. He has not even met with Ruff (who was not at the coaches meet and greet) Ruff is a good guy but the defense is going to change and it will get better. Tuberville has been a part of 10-11 defenses that were the best in the country during their years. Tech has not had one defense in the top 25 under Leach. This team will be hard to score on and I am excited.

The offense will be a little more balanced. (When Oklahoma added “wrinkles” (more run game) to Leach’s offense after he came to Tech, they went 11-0 and won the national championship. I think we are in for a treat.

The team leach stuff is ridiculous. Leach tried to interview for another job every off season for 3 years before he was fired. (Remember, Washington, Auburn, Miami…) I hope that those who want the truth can handle the truth. Rallies are very rarely supported by the truth.

I wish we still had Tuberville, but trust me, he won’t let your team down. He was forced out by an awful adminsitration and meddling trustees, not because of one sorry season. Under Tuberville, your team won’t make any headlines for having goons on the team that get DUIs and drug arrests like at Nick Saban’s Alabama. He’ll run a clean program with good people and plenty of wins. You’ll probably even beat Texas much more frequently – Tubs was 7-3 against Bama and has a winning record against Nick Saban. The new staff will need an offensive coordinator and a quarterbacks coach that knows the system. Hopefully, Sonny Dykes or Halgorson will be interested. That’s the best we can hope for.

I think the hiring of Tubby is a good thing, He is a big name coach that will continue to win and Tech will have the national spotlight, anyway next year because of this fiasco that our administrators, Leach and the whinny Adam James put us through. I do not think that Lincoln Riley will be our OC, but i do think he and Sonny Cumbie will be retained on staff. Tubby is too smart to let the two people who know this offense this well, go. Perhaps he will bring back Holgorsen or somebody of that nature. Maybe he will bring another coach in with a strong passing game resume’ to continue this offense and add a few wrinkles. With the players we have and the recruits coming in an aerial assault is imminent at Tech for the next several years and Tubby knows this. On defense, I hate to say this but Ruff is done, because his presence will bring controversy throughout the entire year among the fan base if the offense is doing poorly, especially since such a strong support for him was evident. No head coach wants this controversy. Tubby will most likely bring in his own D-Coordinator, and very few people in this country know defense better than Tubby, so there may be a few replacements with our defense, i am guessing he will try and bring Alabama linebackers coach James Willis here, but that may be tough since it looks like Alabama Def Coordinator Kirby Smart is going to be the new Georgia Head Coach which leaves Willis as the heir apparent to Def Coordinator at Alabama where he has a home and a national championship. But if we can get him, he will be amazing. If Willis doesn’t take this I hope he rolls the dice and sticks with Ruff, but i doubt it. Either way, i am a fan of the football team, and an alumnus of Tech and will support my team and root for the guys on the field that are here. I think most new coaches retain a couple of assistants to help keep current recruits and to provide some continuity with players and recruits already being pursued for following years. For these reasons and because he seems to be an up-and-comer, Lincoln Riley should get strong consideration. I can see CTT’s apparent concern for having any possibe lightning rods around. In that regard, I agree with Dennis Dodd’s suggestion of getting shed of “The Shed,” as well as Adam James.

If CTT can find an uncommitted SEC-style linebacker to commit to this year’s class, that would be a great PR coup. IMO, the linebacker position is the area of biggest need (despite the recent improvement), especially regarding speed.

    ps: Coach Tuberville:
I hear that OU is recruiting Tre’ Porter as a receiver. He has been committed to Tech as a DB. The guy is a solid 4-star at either position plus RB, IMO. Since he’s said to be waivering, I suggest that he be offered a shot at his choice of RB, WR, or DB. I think he is closer to being your type of running back than others “in the running.” I think his Okla championship team lost 2 games early before he was moved from WR to RB, then won all the rest. All the while, he was multi-tasking at DB and super returner. Hang on to the guy! But give Batch and Stephens a full chance. (For next year, take a long look at WR/athlete David Glidden of Mustang, OK.) This advice if free, and I don’t even have a kid on the team.

Tuberville coached in a conference even more competitive than the Big 12. Just as Leach knew how to beat Texas and OU, Tuberville knew how to beat UF, UGA and UA–no mean feat.

Could Tech’s offense stand some improvement and changes? Absolutely. If Tubs can also establish a strong and consistent running game–as he did at Auburn, Tech will be unstoppable.

Read that again–Tech will be unstoppable.

The icing on that cake will be a quarterback who can–and will–scramble outside of the pocket and is a threat to to pickup or gain ten/fifteen/ or more yards any time he does that. Opposing linebackers will become suicidal and depressed beyond salvation to face an offense that can do THAT. Imagine the horror opposing Big 12 teams would have had if Graham Harrel was also a feared scrambler and runner? Holy Cow!

Defense? Ruff made some nice improvements, but defense has never been a priority since Leach arrived. Look at the Alamo Bowl. It was Ruff’s team, and the defense had more leaks than the White House. Michigan State exploited the defense. MICHIGAN STATE!

Bottom line: Tuberville adds a strong running game, mobile and wiley quarterbacks to the offense, and establishes a defense like those found in the SEC, Tech will be a PERENIAL BCS contender.

Nice thing is, Tubs is smart enough to realize he already has a whiz-bang offense with almost all of the major pieces in place. And nobody should ever doubt his defensive abilities.

He can recruit–and what Tuberville does is spreads our recruiting out beyond the Texas and our border states. We can now credibly tap into some Florida, Georgia, NC and TN talent as well as what we have right here at home. Tubs will also bring a lot more national attention–especially media and broadcasting–our way, which will help with subsequent recruiting.

Good hire. We’re going to keep moving forward and upwards.

    Take it to the bank.

Good hire. Leach spent far less time on defense and it showed. Now we have a man who thinks defense all the time. If he can keep the offense on track and grow from what it is we will be in good shape for 1010. I will renew my season seats!

As for the LEach supporters. You are going to go someplace to find him because he no longer has a parking spot at Texas Tech. It is time to move on; he has said little to the fans since he moved on.

I have seen a dwindling of comments from angry fans over the past couple of weeks concerning the firing of Leach. If Leach is smart he will learn from his mistakes and when he stops being a lawyer he will move on and coach again somewhere, probably with success. He will understand that it was his own actions that got him fired and he won’t repeat his mistakes.

Tech is lucky that Tommy Tuberville was in a position to be hired at this time. Even if he does not hire many members of the current staff, he will hire good people and there are lots of them not on our current staff. Don’t expect a Big 12 championship the first year he is here. There is always a learning curve even keeping the air raid because his new wrinkles and new approach are still unfamiliar to the players. He will be more of a father figure to the players than Leach ever was, more like Ruffin’s relationship with the players. I hope a place can be found for Ruffin on his staff. But Ruffin could eventually be hired as a head coach at a smaller college if he still wants to be a head coach. You can’t be looking back and think about what might have been in college football.

It sounds like Tommy was the right hire for Tech. Many go back to his losing season at Auburn and use that to make their judgment, ‘he’s a loser”. Too many very good coaches lose their job because of that and the main reason is the administrators at that school look for a reason to fire him. Case in point, a few years ago Joe Paterno, a coach, a scholar, and a man of age and longevity at Penn State had a bad season. Did he get fired, no, he considered retirement but stayed on for another year, then another, and I think you get the picture. On the other hand, A & M fired R. C. Slocum after a bad season, despite his past winning record at the school, and what has A & M done since then. “Fran was not the man”. Slocum was fired because of the new president who came to A & M and hired an athletic director from Nebraska. The President is gone, after 1 year, and their program has never been the same and will take a number of years to get back to the days of Slocum’s wining tradition. Tuberville comes into a winning program and will take it to the next level of winning. He is capable of winning the Big 12 and will be a thorn in the side for all other Big 12 schools. Give him a few years of adjustments and recruiting, he will make the unhappy fans happy.

Reading all these responses is uplifting to say the least. I am supprised that no one mentions the fact that Leach was a quirky nerd that had all of his interviewers laughing behind the scenes. They were not laughing at the wit of the man but more out of sympathy for this personality retarded individual and the misguided fan base and University that was stuck with a sucessful Head Coach who was unable to answer the simplest questions posed to him. It was obvious to all of us that had to watch our beloved University and Football Program suffer when this idiot was on camera that the TT Administration was on a mission to replace him as quickly as they could.
It was only our great fortune that the stupid jerk was insubordinate when called on the carpet to explain his handling of a health issue with one of his players. The Administration was able to then fire him for that insubordination and his subquent filing of a lawsuit to negate the suspension they had placed on him.
Texas Tech needs a good quaity Head Coach who has some decorum and ability to relate to the world outside his own little quirkly world. We now have such a Head Coach. We all hope that this new coach can put together a good program that can compete with the big boys in the big 12 South. If he can do that and surely he can, AND he can represent the University and the Red Raider faithful as a CLASSY and ARTICULATE individual, we will all breath a sigh of relief.

I have been a loyal Texas Tech supporter for more than 30 years. While my education didn’t come at Texas Tech, my wife and most of her family attended Tech. I had season tickets for football and basketball the entire time I lived in Lubbock and have kept intact a 15 year streak of attending at least one Texas Tech football game each year since we moved away from Lubbock. Anyone who knows me, socially or professionally, knows that I bleed red and black. My vehicles, home and office have proudly displayed the Double T.
No more, not until at least the athletic director is gone.
As someone who has handled public relations crisis that dwarf the Leach firing, I am in awe of the incompetency shown in the public handling of the Leach suspension and firing.
As for Coach Tubberville, he is polished and slick and I hope I am wrong in my early impression that he is more of a used car salesman than a sincere advocate for the future of Texas Tech football.
I am most distressed by his, and the administration’s, early claim that that the offense would be kept intact, teasing us into believing that while Leach might be gone, the soul of his offense would remain. His admission that he intended to interview four or five other people for the OC position before even considering anyone on the current staff, including Lincoln Riley, is ludicrous. With the possible exception of Dana Holgorsen at Houston, where are there four other coaches who have a clue about the Leach offense? Running a spread offense isn’t the Tech offense. It is more than Xs and Os.
Unless Tubberville hires someone such as Holgorsen, Riley or Josh Heupel from OU to lead the air attack, it is just going to be a disaster similar to his “Out the door” season at Auburn.
I am all for giving Coach Tubberville a chance, but for me the first test is the hiring of the OC and the offensive staff. Breaking faith here isn’t the way to “reunite” the angry fan base.
I wish the players and especially Xoach McNeil the very best. They are the true victims in this mess. I fervently hope that I am misreading the early signals from Coach Tubberville and the intends to live up to his promise to keep the offense intact.

I spent eight years at Tech. I’m a huge fan of the football program, and I think Mike Leach was the best coach the school ever had. He did a tremendous job, and it’s a bummer that he’s gone. But the fact is, Leach (and his fat little ego) screwed up. The administration handled the situation badly, but in the real world, we all have a boss. Anyone with a job knows you aren’t going to be around long if you continually disrespect (and then sue) your boss. Even if you think they’re wrong.

All of you people so obsessed with Mike Leach should quit calling yourselves TTU fans. It’s clear you’re willing to tear down the institution and the football program to show your love, love, love of Mike Leach. You can build a shrine to him somewhere and worship at the pirate altar. Just remember: MIKE LEACH WAS EAGER TO LEAVE TTU EVERY YEAR. He surely didn’t love, love, love you back. If he did, he wouldn’t have added his name to almost every coaching vacancy that came up every year. He did what’s best for himself, which is fine, but he was never a die-hard, loyal Red Raider. He would’ve left at the drop of a hat if Washington, Miami or any other large university had wanted him. Remember that.

You can continue to insult your university and the players on the football team by refusing to support them. You can continue to root for them to fail, and refuse to go to games (although I bet you do). But you surely cannot call yourselves fans. You talk about wanting the truth. The truth is this: LIFE AIN’T FAIR and NO ONE IS BIGGER THAN THE UNIVERSITY. Leach is gone and he ain’t coming back. Get over it, and get on board. Or hey, go back to flaming the blogs while the rest of us have a life.

Its too bad that Tubbs will not be running the TTU offense. The Quarterbacks Coach he is interviewing from Troy knows nothing about Mike Leach’s offense. The only person that can run that offense is Leach. You say Ruffin’s defense got exposed which is true, but you fail to mention that the offense got exposed as well. Then ran 5offensive plays all game. Screen left, screen right, run, and pass on up the middle or down the side line. That was it. Michigan State should have won despite missing 14 key players which not only impacted the game but their preparation as well. It does not matter what offense you run if you don’t have the mad scientist calling the plays. That’s what made the air raid. Leach was smart. That’s why he was the offensive coordinator and not the Riley. Tubbs is a salesman he told sold you a Beach Front Condo in Lorezno, Texas. Get a clue!

Throw in the extra buddy who works for a sports channel who can help with pressure & press, &, well….you get what you got. Does anyone believe that Adam just started acting out this year or last? lluvpirates, I have no illusion that the Administration handled things well. They have not. I also am well aware that Gerald Myers and Mike Leach do not like each other. We (those of us outside the fray) will probably never know exactly what happened, or why things went down as they did.

Whether or not Mike Leach felt some people in the Administration wanted him gone, he was getting paid a huge salary, with very minimal expectations (compared to those of other big-time coached). He didn’t have to win 10 games a year or go to a BCS bowl every year. Eight wins and the Alamo Bowl? Everyone’s happy. (I don’t think that would happen at OU or UT.) He could be an oddball and do his own thing. He had incredible freedom, as far as I can tell. It was a pretty good deal, from my perspective.

And it sounds like (again, we may never know for sure) he had a chance to save his job. But ego got in the way. Yeah, we can speculate all we want about what was asked of him (because right now, we really don’t know), but for the sweet deal he was getting, one might think he could swallow his pride, do right by his TEAM and COACHES, and move on. He elected not to do that.

Look, I believe there is PLENTY of blame on each side. There are no innocent victims in this mess, other than the players still on the team. I guess my question is, how does it help TTU or the football program to be ripping into the new coach (who I happen to think is a great hire), proclaiming that the team will be mediocre (or worse), wishing for failure, and refusing to support the football program? A TTU fan isn’t going to do that. At least give the new program a chance.

I understand the passion here. Mike Leach brought the program to a whole new level. Believe me, I can appreciate that. I was at Tech during some pretty lousy football seasons. But as I pointed out earlier, Leach is neither a saint nor a hardcore Red Raider. He is a great, egotistical, creative coach, and a very intelligent, odd guy. He will be fine, and I promise, he cares far less for all the people screaming right now than they care for him.

As for Craig James…. I saw him and Eric Dickerson play at Jones Stadium. They were highly paid running backs for SMU at the time. My level of disgust with those cheaters matches yours, I believe. I watched SMU win on a heartbreaking final play kickoff return (I think it was 1983). I listened to all the SMU fans screaming “GO PONIES!” and wanted to puke. I don’t know Adam James, but if he’s like his Dad, I suspect he’s spoiled and unfamiliar with ethics. Maybe he’s just a whiny baby who deserved what he got.

But even if that’s true, I am not willing to punish the rest of the guys on the team by rooting for them to fail. I don’t care what people say about Craig James, but I DO care what people say about MY university and MY football team. And if you are a fan, you will care, too. Be mad at the Administration, but don’t take it out on the new coach or the team.

Be cool, support your Raiders, and demand success in 2010.

If you know anything about College football you would know the story about Tubs and Auburn. Tubs was loved by Auburn fans as much as Leach and Ruff are loved by the Raider Nation. They were equally upset when he was released.

Yes he did try to introduce the spread at Auburn however as the Raider Nation knows all to well it takes 2-3 years to get it up and running. You have to have the right players for the spread. Remember Leach’s first two years he still had Spikes players (which were mostly geared for the run game). Leach went out and recruited pass blocking linemen, a lot of receivers, running backs that could catch. Something that can not be done in a year. Kingsbury got killed that first year. And if memory serves me correct Tech in 2000 and 2001 (Leach’s first 2 years at Tech) Tech finished 7-6 and 7-5 / 3-4 and 4-4 in conference respectively.
Leach is THE spread Coach and I feel that the first two years we did as well as we did was because of Leach and we all know he improved Tech each year.

TT is going to keep the spread and tweak it a little, which I personal think a few (not many) running plays would help.

That may get us several BLUE CHIPS this year alone!!!

For those of you who say he cannot recruit in Texas…He was not from Florida when he coached at Miami (they did ok), he was not from Texas when he coached at TA&M (they did ok), he was not from Mississippi when he head coached Ole Miss while under NCAA sanctions and he turned the program around and he was not from Alabama when he coached Auburn to a 12-0 season in the SEC. But, I will let his actions this month speak for themselves.

Also, I agree with Jim. Leach tried to leave every year he was here. Some of you try to implicate the administration for this but none of the coaches in any of the other sports are having the same problems. This certainly does not look like a systemic problem.

Also, it does not appear to be a money issue. The 5 yr. contract that Tuberville reportedly agreed to will end up costing the university about the same as it would if Leach had stayed. We need to face facts. Leach is gone. He will be fine. He is an excellent coach. Once he settles his lawsuit for something amounting to a severance package under the liquidated damaged provision of his contract, he will immediately go find another job. Lets keep our eyes on the ball. FOOTBALL!!

One other thing, Tech was on scholarship reduction up through 2002. Leach inherited a program with a bum leg. Allow an extra year or two for the full effects of those reductions to matriculate through the system and he didn’t have a full team until 2004/2005. I’m just saying. Leach did very well with what he was given and what he was able to take.

TT must retain a couple of o-coaches if he sincerely intends to keep the current scheme. Probably Riley and Cumbie. He may keep 1-2 other coaches, but that’s it. RM is gone along with most d-coaches. RM recruited big DEs and power LBs. TT will recruit speed over size, which I agree with. Look at TCU. Therefore, the defense is of no concern.

However, everyone who enjoyed the “air raid” should be worried. It is a style of offense that can’t be tweaked much at all without changing it effectiveness. This why you see lots of spread offenses, but only one “air raid”. UH has tweaked ML’s system. They use standard line splits, QB under center twice as much as Tech and not near the number of crossing routes.

An outside OC will add a few wrinkles and TT will add more running game. If the offense runs a few QB draws and zone reads per game, great. If you start seeing more QB under center with I-back, it is only a matter of time and Tech will evolve to a balanced scheme and a 6-6 ball team, regardless of defense. In fact, how many 7-5 or worse records did TT have? If his defensive prowess is so great, why did he have lose so many (about the same as ML). Someone in an earlier post alluded to Mizzou and OU. That is a perfect analogy of where we are headed. If Riley or Cumbie get the OC, we can survive. Otherwise, the air raid is extinct in 2-4 years.

Tear it up on Defense with all your new coaches Tuberville, but you CANNOT destroy the offense foundation of this offense. DO NOT TWEAK our offensive coaching staff and fundamentals which you do not KNOW.

Total record against Big 12 teams 52-36 (60%)…not bad at all..considering we are the third or fourth stop on any recruits wish list

Question I would ask is, “WHY are we the third or fourth stop on any recruits wish list?”

Could it possibly be because of fans who are more loyal to an image (ie, Leach) than to the program itself?

When you attach yourself to an image, ie a COACH, that’s all you have and it becomes pretty shallow. No tradition in that whatsoever.

Tradition-laden programs, on the other hand, such as Oklahoma, Texas, A&M, Penn State, Florida, etc, have little trouble attracting top-shelf, blue-chip recruits. It’s about PROGRAMS, not coaches.

Otherwise, Bob Knight would’ve had a myriad of blue-chip high school recruits lined up at his door. Say what you will about Knight, he graduated his players and there are FAR MORE former Knight players who speak highly of the man than there are ex-players who speak otherwise. Flaky, hotheaded and immature? Absolutely. Knight was–and is–all of that and more. But he also built a TRADITION at Indiana that made it possible to not only recruit, but keep the boosters strong.

Tuberville comes from a conference that probably has more tradition than any other conference. He understands tradition. He understands recruiting. So what if he only had one Texas player/recruit in 2007? How many Alabama or Florida or Georgia players did Tech have that same year?

Local schools get local recruits. National schools get national recruits. Lubbock has a hard time realizing that there is a world–a successful one–out there beyond Loop 289. Apparently so do a lot of the naysayers here on this forum.

    Well, JamaicaBetch,
A decade ago, enter Mike Leach. Mike Leach since has taken Texas tech to bowl games every year and his UNIQUE style offense quickly gained national acclaim. Approx 3 years into his term, higher quality athletes began coming to Tech. The national exposure grew and finally blue-chippers DID INDEED appear.
Five to six years ago with Tech winning as much as losing to the power houses like Texas and Oklahoma and A&M it became that….ALL the QUALITY high schoolers who were coming to Texas Tech, were coming SOLELY because of Mike Leachs’ Unique, high powered EXPLOSIVE offense…WOW We have national recognition and are as apt to beat TEXAS or OU as not!!

Anyone here ever been to Purdue? I remember when they used to have a very respectable sports program. What about Louisville? Talk about a stinking, nasty, backwards town–yet their basketball program is otherworldly. Baton Rouge? Not what I’d call a mecca for ANYONE, let alone a young person going off to college. Bryan-College Station? Not exactly Texas meccas either. Nebraska simply isn’t fit to live in, yet recruits from all over head there to play football. Ever been to Manhatten or Lawrence, Kansas? They’re about the size of Plainview on a good day (slight exaggeration, but hopefully you get the point). Columbia, Missouri? Just a boring little stop on the road a haul from either Kansas City or St. Louis.

Stop trying to blame geography on lack of recruiting prowess and start placing the blame where it belongs: A program shallow in tradition. No doubt that Leach was beginning a tradition of winning and of exciting football and of getting tongues wagging. But he’s gone.

We have two choices–we can either continue to build upon success and do with a swagger in our walk and a chip on our shoulder, or we can fall back on the old Lubbock idiom of always blaming someone else and something else for our lack of success.

I know what my choice is. It’s also clear what many others here’s choice is. Too bad.

Have you been to Tuscaloosa, AL, yes the little town whose school has one more National Championships than anyone else. Jamaica Beach is right. It’s been a tradition with people in Lubbock and former coaches have fed on this inferiority complex to blame it on Lubbock. I have been to far worse hell wholes called college towns that don’t have any problem recruiting. You give the example of Austin and Oklahoma City. Well how many towns the size of Austin have powerhouse college football programs? and I am not aware of any powerhouse program in Oklahoma City, they reside in the little town of Norman and a far inferior specimen of the same lies in the little village of Stillwater. The reason that we did not have good programs was because our AD was not capable of hiring good coaches and co-ordinators, either intentionally or unintentionally, the inept coaches fed off this as ready made excuses for their not being able to recruit in Lubbock. All that changed, once Leach and Knight came and suddenly Lubbock was not an issue and we started getting recruits. The floodgates have now opened and we will have good recruiting classes from now on. If you have not been there, please have a visit at College Station Texas, and you will realize why Lubbock is better destination.

Team Leach is AT LEAST trying to accomplish something. Trying to do something about the corrupt administration! We can’t just keep on saying…”It’s over, let’s move on: if we EVER want to get that tradition built!! They fired Leach because of money…period!

It doesn’t matter if it’s Tuberville or who it is, if we don’t make changes in this administration, we WILL NEVER get that tradtion built and this viscious cycle will NEVER end!

We need a more modern administration, one that, when we get a good coach, they will LET him coach and PAY him competitively and perhaps he will WANT to stay here and we could develop! Any other administration would have told a parent that they would investigate any complaints! Because of tension, OUR administration didn’t take that avenue and WON’T take it in the future!

We had a GREAT coach who was JUST on the edge of beginning to recruit TOP NOTCH players and we NEED TO BE SURE WE CAN KEEP THE NEXT ONE

southernbillionairees be quiet…i’ve lived in Lubbock as long as you and have been everywhere! I was expressing my opinion to JamaicaBeach and trying to prove a point !

You can’t possibly be serious unless you know absolutely nothing about the situation or you have some other motivation for posting.
James has a long history of interfering with coaches trying to do their job:

Adam James’ high school coach said that he was never so glad to have a player graduate. He said the team had 2 head coaches one for the team and Craig James for Adam. One of the reasons he was not widely recruited was because his high school coach wouldn’t recommend him.

At Tech Craig James was constantly taking up the coaches’ time at practices and calling them on the phone to tell them that the best receiver was on the bench. Coach Leach reported that Craig James took up more time than all of the other parents combined.

Craig constantly left voicemail messages and at one point the coaches threaten to start playing them in team meetings if they didn’t stop.

Adam James was a cancer on the team and when showed up late for practice, out of uniform, hat on backwards, and wearing dark sunglas$es claiming he had a concussion, he was asked to walk back and forth up and down the field. He made a joke out of that by taking baby steps and that was when he was put in timeout.

If Craig James was so concerned about his son why was his first call to a PR firm with instructions to as$as$inate the character of Mike Leach. His second call was to the Board of Regents to demand the firing of Mike Leach and more playing time for Adam.

I could go on and on about the James Gang but I doubt this will help you.

Leach told me to place James in a dark place near the practice field. Leach further said something to the effect that he wanted me to tell James that I was to lock his f—— p—- a— in place so dark that the only way he knows he has a d— is to reach down and touch it, which I repeated to James. Leach further told me to have him stand in the dark during the entire practice. He did not want James on the field, and he did not want James in the training facility. He did not want to see James. He wanted James to be uncomfortable.’’
Pincock said James was taken to the “sports medicine/athletic training shed,’’ and that objects were removed so that James could not sit or lie down, in keeping with Leach’s orders. Pincock said when practice ended two to three hours later, he let James out of the shed and apologized.
“I told James that I was sorry for having to place him in a dark shed but that these were Leach’s instructions. I do not agree with this form of treatment for anyone, and I discussed this with James.’’
Pincock said James reported Dec. 19 wearing appropriate attire and that Leach instructed that he should be returned to the same place. Because the practice was in Jones AT&T Stadium and not at the team’s grass practice fields, trainers found a closer area – a room that media use to interview visiting teams after games.
Pincock said anything a person might sit on was removed from the room except for two tractor tires. A student trainer monitored James to make sure he was standing the entire time, Pincock said.
“The media room was very dark and cold,’’ Pincock said.

“I think it could hurt them in recruiting,” Propst said. “There’s no offensive identity there. Why would you want to go there? There’s definitely reasons why coaches have left Auburn in the last six months. There’s some major unrest going on down there, no question.”

He hired former Troy offensive coordinator Tony Franklin to be his offensive coordinator at Auburn in 2007. That relationship lasted less than a season as Franklin was fired midway through 2008.

Since then, Franklin, who completed a successful first season as the offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee, has been outspoken about Tuberville, his coaching practices and his interactions with the Auburn staff.

Brown played for Franklin at Kentucky and Franklin brought Brown with him to Troy. Brown replaced Franklin when he left for Auburn and the two still talk regularly.

    Greetings All,

All this talk about not supporting the team is bad folks. I really liked having Leach as our coach, but he is gone now and will not return.

Not supporting the athletic program only hurts the student athletes that are playing for Tech.

Tubby will do good things with this program and we will WIN many many games.

Think about the 18-21 year old kids that are coming to Tech to learn, play sports, grow as individuals, have some fun, develop a solid love for Texas Tech and obtain a first rate education. If we as fans and alumni pull our support we only hurt those young kids currently at Tech or who are coming to Tech.

It is fine to be angry about Leach being gone, but it is also time to know that Tubby is here and he is staying.

Let’s don’t get caught up in angry in-fighting and look like silly school kids to the rest of the country. Love your university and think about the future for those who have chosen to make Texas Tech their University of choice.

Did Tommy Tuberville step aside to let someone else have a chance at coaching Auburn as he stated in his introductory speech at Texas Tech or was he fired?

“I’m a Salesman” as Tuberville introduced himself may have an issue regarding telling the truth which has been a trait of his in the past.

Numerous media accounts, articles and interviews clearly quote Olive Tuberville, Tommy’s mama, and she states that Tommy told her he was dismissed and Olive said he did not retire, but he was fired. His contract provided for $5.1M if he was fired and $0 if he quit and he was paid $5.1M to leave. Olive also stated that “heart problems run in the family” and she was concerned about Tommy’s stress.

Ears said he was dismissed, his mama said he was fired and his contract provided for $5.1M if he was fired and $0 if he quit.

There are numerous reports and stories that document these facts. You need to do your homework if you are capable and you owe me an apology for being doubly wrong.

By the way, Olive also stated that heart problems run in the family and there are numerous other stories about Ears’ family regarding alcohol abuse and infidelity.
