Tuberville: ‘We’re going to air it out’
Pdf: Tuberville news-conference transcript
Texas Tech didn’t toss out the “Air Raid’’ when it cast out former coach Mike Leach. Had Tech officials tried, new hire Tommy Tuberville would have retrieved the blueprint from the trash bin.
During his introductory news conference Sunday, Tuberville said he might add a few wrinkles, but promised that any changes in the Red Raiders’ passing game will be subtle.
“We’re going to air it out,’’ Tuberville said. “We’re going to keep the ‘Air Raid.’ I think it’s something that Tech has hit upon that gives them that identity to recruit and we all want to have.’’
Even if the former Auburn coach weren’t comfortable with the wide-open passing game, he said he’s smart enough to know it resonates with recruits.
“Most of the time, the good players across the country can recognize Texas Tech from one thing, and that is the ‘Air Raid’ — throwing the football, making big plays and being exciting,’’ he said. “And so we’re going to continue that.’’

Tuberville
Red Raiders watchers might be inclined to believe it when they see it. Tuberville’s worst — and last — season at Auburn was in 2008, when the Tigers’ conversion to a spread offense flopped and the team finished 5-7.
Tuberville’s past success was built largely on a strong running game — Auburn running backs Ronnie Brown and Carnell Williams were taken second and fifth overall in the 2005 NFL draft.
“Sure, I like to run the football,’’ Tuberville said, “but I like to win. I’ve looked at the players on this team, and I believe with all my heart, we continue to do what we’re doing and a few new wrinkles, it will continue to make it better. But we are going to be fun to watch.’’
The 55-year-old Arkansas native, who coached Auburn to an 85-40 record from 1999 through 2008, was hired by Tech around lunchtime Saturday and was flown into Lubbock with his family by early evening.
He hit the ground running, introducing himself to Leach’s assistant coaches and making phone calls to recruits. As soon as his news conference concluded, Tuberville and the assistants were off to Orlando, Fla., for the four-day American Football Coaches Association convention that started Sunday.
Who exactly will join Tuberville on staff remains to be seen.
Tuberville said he has several candidates in mind on each side of the ball to be offensive and defensive coordinators. Only after he hires coordinators, Tuberville said, will the rest of the staff take shape.
That’s because Tuberville believes the coordinators should have a major say in who works under them.
“As I told the coaching staff last night, the present coaching staff, I will hire those two coaches first, and then we will sit down with each coach here on the staff,’’ Tuberville said. “We will evaluate them and we’ll evaluate other people.
“If we think there’s somebody out there that may make this university’s football team better, we’ll go in that direction. If we think the people on this staff are the people that can get us to the next level … we’ll do that.’’
Tuberville said he will meet with the current assistants each of the next two days.
“I’ve got to get to know them a little bit better,’’ he said, “because then when we get into negotiations of who we’re going to hire, there might be somebody that might impress me in terms of football.
“I’ll just have to wait and see if anybody strikes something in me that I feel like, ‘Hey, I think they can get this job done.’ ’’
Tuberville has a firmer idea of what he wants to do scheme-wise. Though he coached 4-3 defenses for much of his career, Tuberville said he came to the conclusion seven or eight years ago that he needed to evolve to defend spread passing games. Thus, he wants to convert the Raiders to a 3-4 team, provided the personnel he inherits can handle it.
“When everybody started spreading it out, it makes it easier to play nickel and dime defenses out of a three-man front,’’ he said. “Replace a linebacker or two linebackers with two corners that can cover all these wide receivers that teams are putting on the field.’’
Tuberville said he’ll still run a four-man defensive front 30 to 40 percent of the time.
“You have to be multiple,’’ he said. “But we’ll be aggressive. We’ll attack the line of scrimmage. You’ll see blitzing. You’ll see zone blitzing. It’s hard to zone blitz out of a four-man front. But we’ll have to evaluate how much of three-man front we’ll put in depending on the personnel. I mean, we’re not going to force anything.’’

I understood it to be James Willis, a$$ociate head coach and linebackers coach.

In a capsule…He said the Air Raid stays with a more run flavor, change in the defense where the 3-4 becomes the basic defense with more zone blitzes, more emphasis on special teams and more emphasis on special teams..I believe these combinations are a improvement. You can’t win with offense alone. I can’t argue with the vision, now comes the hard part – implementation.

With the money they supposedly saved 800,000 and the contract that Tubervile signed 1.6 million, maybe, I think Ruff is gone, looks like, well see on feb. 3rd. national signing day the recruits that really are the future of Tech are watching this very closely, he will be playing with the players that the current staff recruited and the success of those players in the future..

First of all who said that TT would be keeping the Leach offense. I watched the news conference on texastech.com and I did not hear him say that. Second he said that he would be running the ball more than we had been. He is talking about hiring a new O-C. If it is not a Leach protoge then it will not be the same. So we will be starting over.

Holgerson is definitely the answer at OC. He coached under leach for 7 years and has the Houston offense humming right now…
I still think he may keep Ruffin on board as a D-Line coach. That was his specialty and our DLine has been fantastic over the past several years…
We will see

Read between the lines. Ruffin and Lincoln are gone. He’s going to hire some of his unemployed buddies for all the key jobs. He told the administration he’ll be keeping the offense, just till he got hired. The offense as we know it, is gone. This generation of coaches don’t change their spots. This is just another in a long string of sad days for the Raider Nation. It’s official, we’re now Texas A&M, I’m done.

Any chance Leach could get back on as Tuberville’s offensive coordinator? Keep Mike up in the press box away from the players.. and calling plays just might be a winning combination……

Coach Tubberfield said he will run the “air raid offense” with a few wrinkles, he asked if our quarterbacks were mobile. Now a mobile quterback woud be a “new wrinkle” wouldn’t it? You guys who are preaching doom and gloom for our offense need to pay closer attention to what our new coach has been saying. He knows that our offense is the key to the recuiting success and it has given us a lot of national exposure over the past 10 years. Take the mans word and give him a chance to show us how a coach of his caliber can tweek our offense and make it better. Weren’t we all hoping that Sticks would be the guys next year? Well there is one of your wrinkles, a mobile quarterback, now opposing defenses will have to account for the QB instead of just dropping back into coverage. Thats something we havent seen around here and a welcomed srinkle IMHO.

You guys need to calm down. He has said over and over he is keeping this offense. He said there will be some new wrinkles, some subtle changes that most fans would not even know the difference. The administration waited to hire him to make sure he was not going to change the offense. I believe he will keep most of the offensive coaches. He may very well go outside for a DC and OC, but the offense will be the same, with maybe more running. But that is when we had our best year – 2008 – when we had more running to go with the Air Raid. Tuberville would be an idiot to wholesale change everything when he knows this is a split fan base, a hard place to recruit, and a city and administration that wants the Air Raid. I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt based upon his history of rebuilding programs in difficult situations. Here, he has a set program and a set offense with recruits that fit that offense. A much easier situation than any he has faced before.

One of the many reasons Tech has never won a championship in football is because of the lack of a strong defense to go along with the passing game, I think the new offense is going to be more similar to a UT or Oklahoma type offense where its spread but still incorporates other aspects of football. Tech will be just fine as long as he can bring in some athletes.

Glad youpointed that out, Thrash, anyone connected with Leach is gone . . All you have to do is go back and listen to what was said by him previosly, I plan to keep the current staff in place, he did say inhis radio interview from Memphis he said the defense needed improvement and he and was not acceptable , he gave Leach credit in one previous interview but hasnt mentioned him since, no one has given Ruff crredit for the job he did in the alamo bowl lately. The Michigan state coach saidin his press conference that it would be best to keep the current staff forcontiinuity and the players would adjust quicker and be more comfortable, a lot of these current and future players were recruited by the current staff, what I WANT TO KNOW WHEN ARE THE STOOGES GOING TO GO AND THE ROACHES WITH THEM, oH, I forgot supposed to move on..ha. ha.

Tuberville rules! Open you minds, commenters, and pay attention, and quit focusing on your narrow little world. This guy is the best thing that has happened to Texas Tech EVER! Frankly, as a grad, who lives a couple of thousand miles away, I got tired of looking Leach’s big stomach and his rumpled clothes and listening to his pirate nonsense. We need an IMAGE, too, as well as a good coach. No coach is going to stay around, no matter how great he is, if he starts acting as though he doesn’t have to pay attention to his superiors. It doesn’t make any difference if you don’t like Myers; he was Leach’s superior.
I’m looking forward to the 2010 season. Anyone who’s unhappy should leave. We don’t need your grumbling.

Hope he keeps to the same Offense and improves the Defense. Implementation will be the key. The OC and DC will need to be good since he said he delegates his power to them and the other coaches. He coaches coaches is what he said.
Best plan is to bring in the best Offensive Coordinator we can get.
My choices: Dana Holgorson or Major Applewhite.
Then do what the Longhorns have done; make the Offensive Coordinator the Head Coach In-waiting and as soon as Tuberville retires Tech has their Head Coach and there is not any turmoil – fans will know the plan, the players will know the plan, and the recruits will know that there is a smooth transition and plan in-place.
Tech can not afford to look this bad in the National Press ever again.
The University needs to plan for the next transition when it occurs and have everything up front so that the Students, Alum and Fans know what to expect.

Dear Fellow Raiders:
I’ve been following this saga on RedRaiders.com since Leach was suspended. I’ve seen a lot rancorous exchanges between Team Leach and the supporters of TTU. I’ve even been a part of it.
In the interest of unity, I am not going to post anymore messages. The nature of these messages mostly divides us. I’m sure A&M, TExas and the Okies are having a good laugh.
I sincerely hope that the Team Leach folks will return to the fold after they have been heard. I understand your hurt feelings. But hurt feelings usually get better over time. Besides, for those fans committed to leaving Texas Tech, I’m sure Mike Leach will welcome you as fans of his new school when he decides on which offer to take.
TTU is bigger than any one person–Leach, Hance, Myers, etc. I hope we can all agree that the coaches and guys on the team need our support to win and reflect positively on the institution we love.

There is a difference between a quarterback who runs and one who can scramble. If we are going to a running QB, we don’t have one aside from the red-shirt Karam (spelling?). My prediction is there will be major changes within the year, and we will be set back a decade.

My heart said Ruffin. But once I eliminated the emotion I realized that Tuberville was the right choice. An improved defense is necessary to win at the next level. Sheffield is a mobile QB and the team definitely plays at a different tempo when he is in the game.

Ok, let’s look at the big picture. Understand who’s coming back, what we have, and any new recruits that are coming in that might be able to contribute. We’re losing a lot on defense after this year, but the offense should still produce. That’s good, and that’s our bread and butter. After next year, which will be a building year on defense, now we have to consider who will be on offense. After next year, we lose EVERYONE of substance on offense…equally important, who will Tubbs recruit to replace the offensive deficit during that time? Can he do as well as Leach and his staff did for 10 years running? Can he maintain what has become a very high standard? Remember, Leach never had a losing season. I have my doubts. In my humble opinion, the only way he can do it is if he successfully melds the existing staff with any new personnel he wants to bring in. If he can do that and establish chemistry, it could very well be the last ingredients needed to build a championship program. If he can’t, well, then the great winds we have ridden on will fall flat, the recruiting mill will dry up, the end of the Tech football program will be realized, and we will once more be relegated to meaningless bowl games every four years or more and struggling to make it a 6-6 season. Three words, people, “We will see.” At a minimum, Ruffin and Riley MUST stay to have any hope of success.
All of that said, I want to go on record as saying I totally disagree with the firing of Coach Leach and I wish him fair winds. He will no doubt be snatched up by another school in short order and turn that team into a winning institution…I have no doubt. For me personally, though I have adamantly supported Texas Tech athletics since 1989, I cannot in good conscience, support the administration’s unjust actions. Although a loyal supporter physically and financially since then, as a reprisal, I have decided to not financially support Texas Tech athletics for exactly 5 years since that is is the exact amount of time Leach had on his contract. He wont be paid, so I won’t pay the administration as well for 5 years. It may seem petty, but it’s my own private silent demonstration. Physically, I will remain the staunch supporter I always have been, but to continue to financially support a group of people who does that to a coach who made Texas Tech a household name makes me feel cheap and dirty. Any way you cut it, it was wrong. God willing, in 5 years time, that administration will have been replaced and I can once again feel good about sending my alma mater funds to support it’s athletes. Until then, I say, “Good luck.”

If you like Kristy Curry, then you are going to love Tuberville. “I’m a salesman” stated Tuberville and Myers, Bailey and Hance bought that hook, line and sinker.
I find it quite amusing that Tuberville indicated that Texas Tech needs to improve the offense, but he is not going to change the offense. Based on Tuberville’s statement, he is going to hire a new offensive and defensive coordinator. In Tuberville’s 10th year at Auburn in 2008, he hired an offensive coordinator, Tony Franklin, to run the spread and it turned out to be a disaster causing him to get fired.
The recruits are not going to fall for the snake-oil salesman from Arkansas.

Hey voice or reason, ironically your facts don’t live upto your name. Did you see why Tony Franklin was fired from Auburn? Was it Tuberville or was it the boosters at AU that wanted both Tuberville and his spread offense out? Check your facts before you make pessimistic comments like that. But I see your concern about the Air Raid, but I think he is going to retain it and add a little bit of running game to it, just as Lincoln Riley did in the Alamo Bowl and I believe he is retaining Lincoln as the OC and I see nothing wrong with the offense that we ran in the Alamo bowl (just as long as it’s not Potts at QB).

I don’t believe that Ruff deserted his friend…after 10 years, Ruff wanted to keep everything the two of the developed in our football program. Ten years is a lot of work to just push to the side and after a 10 year investment, why not Ruff. I hope Tuberville makes us successful.

at least when TT gets hold of TTU and tuns us into a 5-7 team these comment sections won’t take so dang long to read through. that’s the closest to a positive I can see in the whole fiasco.

@ Lynda, after reading all the Auburn comments, most fans think he became lazy in his last three years of coaching. I imagine he is using TTU just to get back into the door of coaching. I really dont imagine he will be in West Texas long!!!

Tweaks = not running the same offense
My guess is that he thinks he knows how to win with a different offense – the current players have been recruited and coached to do something different – Mark it down, the news conference is coming when he says he needs different players. This shouldn’t be a rebuilding effort – but is obvious that it will be one that never ends. The other big 12 schools are rejoicing – welcome back to the “You all don’t matter” status…… When do Meyers and Hance lose their jobs? The not so funny thing is no one will care after next year.

TTU just got blindsided. Tubberville will be running the ball out of the spread. He was on the FOX news today and Chris Level is quoted as saying he wanted to know how big the running backs are are how mobile the quarterback are. He also plans to hire his own offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. The leach air raid is finished. He is a “salesman” remember. The G.O.B. network just got what they deserved today. Salesmen tell people just what they want to hear. Before he was hired “I plan to keep the staff 80 to 90% in tact. At 2:30p.m today
“I’m a believer of having a great offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator,” Tuberville said. “But I also believe in letting them have the opportunity to interview coaches, to make sure that they fit into their beliefs and how they want them to coach, either receivers, running backs, quarterbacks, offensive line.
“So what will happen is my first order of business, as I told the coaching staff last night, the present coaching staff, is that I will hire those two coaches first, and then we will sit down with each coach here on the staff. We will evaluate them and we’ll evaluate other people.”
The new coach did hint that changes to the staff could be in the offing. When asked if any of the coaches currently on the staff will be candidates for the coordinator positions, Tuberville acknowledged that he’s “thought about that” before quickly adding that there are “four or five guys on each side of the ball that are not on the staff that I want to talk to first.”
TTU just got burned and Tubberville will not save the ded raiders. Tech will always be behind UT, OU, A&M. All this move did was give Tech a leg up against Oklahoma State and Baylor. Bob Stoops and Mack Brown do not fear the Red Raiders and the entire Big 12 is excited that they no longer have to play defense on their toes agains the Mad Scientist of Football. Leach will win BCS Championship if secures a job at any of the schools in the PAC 10. Tubberville will not be successful running his schemes will the lower level recruits that he will get at Tech. The SEC is a stronger conference than the BIG 12 and we saw that on Thursday Night at the Rose Bowl. It truly looked like Men amongst boys. TTU has officially taken a step backwards.

TTU fans – think next level.
Tuberville is going to be bringing in NFL quality players by the double handful. High quality recruits are not dumb. They know Leach’s playersdon’t usually make it in the pros – but dozens of Tubervilles have. It’s obvious that Tuberville can offer great young talent early playing time, because Leach either didn’t sign NFL quality players or couldn’t coach them to that level. Tuberville does both – and recruits can see his record as proof.
TTU defense is ok by Big 12 standards, but really pretty weak. Tuberville will bring in great coaches and players. TTU offense is woefully one dimensional. Harrell couldn’t win a conference championship with it and even McCoy and Bradford with MUCH stronger programs could not win national championships. The next level means stopping all sorts of offenses, so 65 point catastrophes are not even remotely possible. Balanced attack offense means you can’t be so easily shut down like the SEC has routinely done to Big 12 passing only opponents for the last few years.
Tuberville was not hired to keep the Leach team, or the Leach offense in place. He was hired to win championships – championships against the big boys Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska. The great Leach and his team came close once in 10 years. Based on his record, Tuberville will have TTU finishing 1st in their division about half the time. Some of those times they will lose out on tiebreaks for the championship game, but sometimes they will win and also win the championship. He is used to that level of competition facing Alabama, LSU, Florida and more week after week. Get ready for higher calibre football.

TT used the UCF opening to pressure the administration and they caved in panic. Who said we have a few others we’re interested in interviewing and then TT is hired without any further discussions. This is an iept AD and he lets his emotions cloud decisions. For those who remember, there was one person in the administration who said they loved RM, but they chose otherwise. Hearing that GM was adamant about the hire and one key person finally succumbed. Keep your ears to the ground after the ML law suit is final. Those who want a new AD will be happy.
On the bright side, I personally have been saying for several years Tech needs to move to the 3-4. This will put more speed and blitz options on the field. It allows for speed on the corners and power in the middle. On the dark side, the air raid will be tinkered, tweaked and chiseled away in three years. Tech will look more like Mizzou, Boise State and BYU than the old Tech. I promise!!. TT said he will keep the air attack before hired. After being hired, he says he won’t change “much” and they will be subtle changes. Sounds like what he told the Ole Miss faithful. “They’ll have to carry me out of here in a pine box.” He immediately took the AU offer. It is integrity folks or lack thereof.
If he hires Dana Holgerson and keeps Lincoln R. and Sonny C. as o-coaches, we have a chance. Otherwise, you will not recognize the offense in a few years. He destroyed three o-schemes and coordinators at AU by throwing in a wrinkle here and there. The new OC will throw in his wrinkles or mark, if not the aforementioned, and we loose our identity. Beginning of the end folks! The first thing you will notice is no more wide o-line splits. The other thing you’ll notice is the QB draw and zone read, which is not bad. Then he will slowly implement more running game. If your looking for an example, look back at OU under ML, then under Mangino and now there is no resemblance of the air raid ML implemented. Hello Tech – we’re next in the evolution of the air raid to a balanced offense. I for one am going to miss the excitement. We have about 2-3 years before it is unrecognizable.

Oh, forgot to mention my discussion today with an AU source. He told me Tech should get ready for 5-7, 6-6 & 7-5 seasons within a few years. This guy is one of the best football minds I know. He believes with all his heart that TT will ride the ML wave and current recruitng classes for 2-3 years before the slide. TT did the same thing at AU. Rode the momentum and wave and Alabama decline for several years and then as he began losing recruits he destroyed the offense and went through three OCs to cover his failures. The pendelum is now swinging back to A&M, OU, UT & NU dominance over Tech. We’ll be competitive against BU, OSU, KU, KSU, ISU, MU and CU. Well, CU until they fire Hawkins next year and hire ML. I’m not a pessimist, but I am a sad RedRaider alumni and ex-athlete. I do not believe the future, beyond three years, is bright. There’s a track record here if the TT ding-bats will dig deeper than 2-3 good seasons.

Unless “Balloon Dad” James pulls another stunt and locks his son in Tuberville’s car trunk then the obvious will be written in cement when the offensive coordinator and staff are chosen. That’s to say there is no reason to doubt Tuberville’s word about keeping the current offensive scheme. Tuberville is no fool, he knows a great equalizer when he sees it and he’ll have the right horses coming back next season. Adding a stronger ground game is gravy. As someone here mentioned earlier, Tech’s offense was never better than ’08 with Woods and Batch. Depending on recruiting, over time (a few seasons) the offense may evolve into a more wide-open Rodney Allison-style, but that’s not shabby either. Tuberville will be bringing his own defense – good – so It would seem to be a given that he will hire a new defensive coordinator. In due time Tech’s defense will be as feared as the offense. It will be sad if Ruff goes, but it is hard to see him taking a demotion. His defense put Tech in a position for a national championship in ’08, and his performance at the Alamo Bowl under such difficult circumstances was one of the best jobs of coaching in the nation this past season. This is not the last we will hear from Ruff. His star is on the rise and other schools are noticing.

Our new coach has a fine track record. I appreciate the work Ruff did, but we can do better. I enjoyed the Leach era to a certain degree. He was an odd person. However, he put together a great offense and in doing so put Tech on the football map.
As a Tech employee I often spend hours in meetings with my Dean. I would be long gone if I “cussed” him out or treated him with anything but respect in spite of differences.
Mike Leach was full of Mike Leach. However, Texas Tech did not handle this situation well and now the powers that be need to take a long look at themselves and make changes where necessary. Way too many chiefs with input and alums with power ran all over us indians (no disrespect to native americans intended)..

I seriously doubt you even know where SE Asia is. Try doing the Google Earth thing to find it. . .
Tuberville coached in a conference even more competitive than the Big 12. Just as Leach knew how to beat Texas and OU, Tuberville knew how to beat UF, UGA and UA–no mean feat.
Could Tech’s offense stand some improvement and changes? Absolutely. If Tubs can also establish a strong running game–as he did at Auburn, Tech will be unstoppable.
Read that again–Tech will be unstoppable.
The icing on that cake will be a quarterback who can–and will–scramble outside of the pocket and is a threat to to pickup or gain ten/fifteen/ or more yards any time he does that. Opposing linebackers will become suicidal and depressed beyond salvation to face an offense that can do THAT.
Defense? Ruff made some nice improvements, but defense has never been a priority since Leach arrived. Look at the Alamo Bowl. It was Ruff’s team, and the defense had more leaks than the White House. Michigan State exploited the defense. MICHIGAN STATE!
Bottom line: Tuberville adds a strong running game, mobile and wiley quarterbacks to the offense, and establishes a defense like those found in the SEC, Tech will be a PERENIAL BCS contender.
Take it to the bank.

Ruff was treated like a old newspaper,he wasnt news anymore,. there has not been any acknowledgement of the job he did at the Alamo Bowl , keeping a team focused in extreme circumstances, lately by the ad or the current coach a coach that was highly thought of in the community, not a thank you, nothing, but that does not surprise me any, the man had class, Just goes to show you..

Coaches like Leach are behind us, gone like the dinosaurs. It has nothing to do with the “new and spoiled generation”. It’s just that no one wants to be associated with programs that punish student athletes for reporting injuries. Don’t believe me?
