Texas Tech chooses Tuberville

Back in his childhood, Tommy Tuberville used to come to West Texas during the summer to spend some of his time off from school.

The mood won’t be nearly as relaxed and carefree this time around.

The veteran coach who not long ago led Auburn to five New Year’s Day bowl games was hired Saturday to take over at Texas Tech, where he’ll be asked to keep a winning program on the right track and unite a fan base bitter over the firing of Mike Leach.

“Coach Tuberville has got a proven record,” Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said. “He was highly successful over in the Southeastern Conference. We just feel he can come in and take our program and hopefully continue on the success we’ve had and even build it to a higher level.”

When reached Saturday afternoon on his cell phone, Tuberville said Tech officials had asked him not to discuss his hiring until the news conference. He made a few impromptu comments when he got to town, however.

“I’ve been out for a year, and I’m fired up to be in a new conference,’’ Tuberville said shortly after he arrived in Lubbock. “It’s exciting in our business when you’re at a new place.

“I’m excited about being here.’’

Tuberville, 55, will be given a five-year contract averaging $1.5 million a year, plus incentives, The Avalanche-Journal learned. Other contracts details are still being worked out.

Tech will hold a news conference to introduce Tuberville at 2 p.m. Sunday at United Spirit Arena, though it will be closed to the public, Tech officials said.

Last week, Tuberville told the A-J Tech would be a good place for him to resurface after a year out of coaching. He said he wouldn’t take just any offer.

“I’m going to get into one where they’ve got a chance to win and people are excited about it,’’ he said.

One of his first tasks will be to win over players who had their heart set on interim head coach Ruffin McNeill getting the job permanently. On Friday, quarterback Steven Sheffield said at least 90 percent of the team wanted McNeill.

“Some people might be wishing we would have Ruff more than coach Tuberville, but this might be the best thing for us,’’ quarterback Taylor Potts said. “I think everybody will make the most of this and play hard. All the young guys and the other guys coming back, all we want to do is win and play football and be surrounded by friends and families. I think coach Tuberville will do a good job of leading us in the right direction.’’

Another player who had lobbied for McNeill, middle linebacker Brian Duncan, said, “We can’t let it affect us.’’

“It’s time to get to work now,’’ Duncan said. “We’ve got a head coach, and we have to get to work and be able to adapt to whatever he brings in and play our game, play Red Raider football.’’

McNeill did not return phone messages or answer calls to his cell phone Saturday.

Tuberville was head coach at Mississippi from 1995 through 1998, where he went 25-20 with a program that was under NCAA sanctions. His Rebels teams never had a full allotment of scholarships.

From Ole Miss, he moved to Auburn from 1999 through 2008, his tenure highlighted by a run of eight consecutive winning seasons from 2000 through 2007. The Tigers won a Southeastern Conference championship and five SEC West Division titles or co-titles.

Though the Tigers went 13-0 in 2004, Tuberville’s tenure ended with a 5-7 season in 2008. He was forced out 13 months ago, with Auburn agreeing to pay the $5.1 million remaining on his contract.

Tuberville’s 10-year record at Auburn (85-40) was remarkably similar to Leach’s 10-year record at Tech (84-43). He has indicated he will try to strike a balance between doing what he knows and not upsetting the spread-passing offense that worked so well for Leach.

“It’d be crazy to change it,’’ Tuberville told the A-J last Sunday. “That’s a trademark of Texas Tech now. It’s helped put them on the map. It’s helped in recruiting, I’ve noticed.’’

Tuberville said he was first exposed to the spread passing game when Dennis Erickson went to Miami (Fla.) as head coach in 1989.

“Being a defensive guy, I really liked it,’’ Tuberville said. “It helps you on defense train your defensive backs.’’

Tuberville and his family flew in Saturday evening to Lubbock, which is not unfamiliar territory. Tuberville said his mother grew up in Seminole and he has an aunt and an uncle who went to Tech.

One of Tuberville’s first orders of business was to meet with Leach’s staff, none of whom had any assurance of retaining their jobs. The A-J learned late Saturday that the assistants weren’t immediately told who, if any, among them would be retained.

“I’ve built a relationship with all the coaches and get along well with all those coaches,’’ Potts said, “but that’s kind of the nature of the business. They come and go sometimes. It’s rare to be in one spot a long time. They know that, too.

“I wish they could all stay, but I understand that some of them might be headed a different way, onto a bigger move.’’

Although it wasnt my first choice, he is the best coach available thats willing to come to West Texas. Yes Mike Leach brought Tech to a new level here but he never took Tech to that next level (no big 12 championships and best bowl game the holiday bowl?) which is something Tubberville has done in the tough SEC conference. And yes I know if you look at the last years of his coaching at Auburn they were not good but coaches dont last long in the SEC. Hopefully he can build a strong sec type defense which is something Tech has always lacked. I think this will work as long as he keeps the spread offense here, otherwise we will be returning to the days of ol Spike D.

Now that a decision has finally been made, only time will tell if it was the correct decision. As it would have been had they hired Ruff.

Both had pros and cons to their resume and fit at Tech. I was going to be “satisfied” with either decision, since Leach was not coming back.

As regards, to Riley as OC, is he truly ready? He was the play caller at the Alamo Bowl, but that was just implementing the plan, system and preparation that Leach had put in place.

Why not go for Dana Holgerson? He may jump at a chance to come back to Tech and get into the Big XII and BCS conference, thereby improving his resume for further coaching positions, or the Tech HC if Tuberville doesn’t pan our or plays the stepping stone game.

I am a season ticket holder (qty 4) and am still debating on whether to renew. A lot will depend on what they do with the pricing. If it increases like last year, I can’t justify renewing. The price was increased by 30-50% depending on if you add in the Red Raider Club requirement to the cost.

Texas and OU get the best players out of Texas not to mention LSU and other schools who come to Texas and recruit. If Leach would have able to get the recruits Texas gets year in and year out then he would have won some Big XII Championships.

Leach did an AWESOME job for Tech for 10 years considering the recruits Tech is able to get although he was starting to change that in the last few years. Too bad the 3 stooges got rid of him. Now we move forward into the Tuberville era. As long as he keeps the current offense system I think we’ll be good. We really need to strengthen the defense to compete for the Big XII South Championship.

“They” (and we all know who “They” are) finally got rid of Coach Leach and “They” got rid of Coach Ruff before he could even get started. “They” now have their CEO/Head Coach who looks just like all the other CEO/Head Coaches. Under Leach, Tech had estabished a unique identity in college football. Young people are drawn to that. Tech football was different and had become something special. If “They” think that hiring Tuberville is going to turn Tech into Texas or OU or Alabama or Ohio State…”They” are nuts. Tech is a great school. Tech can be very competitive in all sports. They have become more than just competitive in football. But it will take a couple of generations of success (and National Titles) to put Tech up there with the perennial powers. Tech’s beat Nebraska the last four times they’ve played, but most people in this country (including blue-chip high school football players) still view Nebraska as having a superior football program. But, I don’t care.
Tech has carved out it’s own niche. Their greatest strength has been the fact they just seemed to be a little different than other teams. Coach Leach was different. Their crazy good offense was different. Their fans were different. Lurking out there on the High Plains waiting to ambush Longhorns and Sooners. It was fun while it lasted.
I’m not defending the way Coach Leach treated Adam James. Leach and everyone else involved should have been able to resolve this without Leach going away. Tuberville is a great coach and from everything I’ve heard, a fine gentleman. But Tech football, as we’ve known it, is gone. Maybe Tuberville and company can make it better. Odds are against it.

Also about Leach I could care less that he is gone…..BEST coach in Tech history…yes when u plat 4 games a year against Sisters of the Blind and Girl Scout Troop 241 u are gonna get your 5 wins a year….people will say yes thats what all big schools do know so they can get bowl eligible…..so before you start that look at the facts from this year…..Alabama played Virginia Tech week 1 and Florida plays Forida State year in and year out for nonconference..TAM played Arkansas, USC played Ohio State, Nebraska played Virginia Tech……Tech played North Dakota, Rice, Houston, New Mexico and has for the past 6 years played mainly no names….also i dont think leach was that much better than dykes….facts are facts…the last 6 years of dykes stay in lubbock he had a better win lose record against OU TAM and Texas than Leach and also Leach has only 3 more conference wins than Dykes did during his last 6 years….so i really dont see the great improvements stat wise that everyone thinks he has done for the team…I will have to wait and see what he new coach brings to the table but i may actually go watch a nonconference game that isnt against Florida International, North Dakota, Indiana State etc……….. Like I said i am split here but I will wait and see what happens and go from there give Tubberville and chance the same way i would have had Ruffin got the job……..Tubberville is a proven winner and we will see what he can do here…he may be the puppet in all this but can he win…we will all wait and see

The things that you folks believe and write ar mind boggling. It is so sad to see people who are blind to anything but winning.

Tech seriously considered Coach Ruff. This was no race decision. It was a no-brainer. It was a closer decision than it should have been. Hopefully Coach Ruff will stay. He is loved by all. He has become a great recruiter.

If tou are faced with the decision of whether to hire one person or another, and if you are really torn by that decision, what would be the very best decision? What if you could get BOTH? That’s what Tech hopes for.

The Leech tortured a boy needlessly and put his health and well-being in danger. The current players heaved a collective sigh of relief when The Leech was fired. This was communicated to the administration by team leaders. The Leech had become an uncontrollable egomaniac who was abusive to the team. He never praised in public and criticized in private. His interviews were a disgrace.

Coach Tubbs has the pedigree to absolutely take tech to the ne3xt level, and Coach Willis is a superstar. You will see that Coach Tubbs will welcome Coach Ruff, Lincoln Riley, Clay McGuire, and Sonny Cumbie with open arms for sure.

As an Auburn fan, I will tell you what you are getting with Tuberville.

Pros- Will not ever embarrass university.
    Plays good defense.
    Special teams are solid.
Will pull an upset over a better team every year. (Here it was an LSU or a Florida. There it will be a Texas, Oklahoma, Ok St.)

Cons- Got very lazy in recruiting.
Extremely conservative. (Has no problem winning a 17-13 game)
Will lose at least 1 game a year he shouldn’t. (At Auburn, he lost to South Florida, Miss st at home, Arkansas several times as a favorite.)

Verdict- He did go undefeated in 2004, 9-3 2005, 11-2 2006. Then he got very lazy in recruiting and finished up 8-4 and 5-7. By the way, that “boring style of football,” as one poster said has won 4 straight national titles so I would welcome it with open arms.

Tech’s offensive coaches already know the spread better than anyone else, so it makes sense that he would keep many, if not all, of them I hope. Bring in Holgerson for OC! Not sure he would come, however. 3. Tuberville also has ties to West Texas – his mother is from Seminole. His sons are in 7th and 10th grades, so maybe he will not want to move at least until the younger one graduates from high school, giving Tech 5 years at least (if he is successful). All that being said, I am afraid this looks like the Tech hires of the 1970s – bring in someone from outside who will stay 3 years and be gone – see Jim Carlen, Steve Sloan….

I think Coach Ruff earned his shot, and has demonstrated his loyalty to TTU. Tuberville has demonstrated only his loyalty to himself, and if he (and/or his wife) didn’t like Oxford, Miss, then how long do you think they will last in Lubbock? And who couldn’t recruit to Auburn? Let’s see how he does recruiting as 4th banana against UT, A&M, and OK. The First DECENT season he has at TTU, he’s gone, I just pray that Gerald is gone by then for that hiring process. I think you hire the person with the best qualifications. Ruffin simply doesn’t have the credentials (like sustained success as a defensive coordinator) to be a head coach at this level. Since Tommy T. wanted the job, he was the logical choice.

Winning breeds excitement; not wide-open offense. If the Raiders had been losing a lot of games like they lost the U of Houston game, I can assure you the excitement level among the TT fans would have gone down rapidly.

I think Tommy T. will have to stay with the current offensive system until he gets a few new recruits that might be more suitable to his preferred style (probably more than two years away). By then, hopefully we will have been so successful offensively that he will incorporate a lot of Leach’s system into his own system. But as the head coach, he certainly has the right to run the system that he believes in.

And even though I love what Mike Leach has done for Texas Tech these past 10 years, anyone that thinks USC or the Oakland Raiders would have any interest in Leach has a hugely inflated opinion of ML. USC gets superior players, so they don’t need to be unconventional. And trying to coach in the NFL with a playbook that was has about seven offensive plays would make him a complete laughing-stock.

Tommy Tuberville “resigned” yesterday as the head coach at Auburn University. Unfortunately, no one bothered to tell his assistants, who were out on the road recruiting, completely unaware that they no longer had jobs. As you can imagine, their families are not too happy about that, so a couple of assistant’s wives did what anyone would do in that situation—call a sports talk radio show.

Donna Dunn, wife of d-line coach Don Dunn (Don and Donna Dunn?), called the local sports talk station to complain that her husband found out he had lost his job when the coach of a recruit he was visiting told him. Her son, who is a student at Auburn, found out when a classmate interrupted a presentation he was giving to tell him his dad was unemployed. All of the other coaches and their families found out from media reports or friends.

Tuberville wasn’t my first choice, but I can get behind him. Let’s see what he can do with the recruits. Save 5 out of the 6 big time recruits, and it’s a win. Lose more than that, and it’s a failure. Anything short of 9 wins and the Cotton Bowl, and it’s a failure. I’m wiling to give Tuberville a chance, but I’m not going to expect less from him than I would from Leach. No honeymoon, in other words.

And if the AJ and/or Tuberville is looking for a positive impression, don’t talk about Bum Phillips. He never kicked the door in, remember???

I was NEVER in favor of Ruff. Has nothing to do w/ his being black. I would have supported the UofH coach, who is black, b/c he has good bloodlines (OU) and HC experience (UofH).

And Ruff’s D isn’t great. It’s so-so. Admittedly an improvement. But they gave up 31 to an avg MSU team missing players, 50+ to TAMU, UNM (UNM?) moved the ball, UofH passed ‘em silly. They held OU in check, although OU was missing everal players. Best D performance was against NEB, which has a pitiful (non-existent?) O.

And in typical fashion they will hold a “closed to the public” news conference tomorrow. Why the Spirit Arena? If the public isn’t invited, they could have it in one of the closets the James kid was in. Hope Tuberville does keep the offense. The Raiders under Leach brought excitement to the game. Most of the coaches at the time came out and publicly supported him, and the other guy withdrew. He was not fit for the job then, and is not now. I did find it amusing that he then had a hand in firing or running off almost all of those coaches, that is, he’s not too concerned about loyalty.

Linc may very well be ready to be an OC.

What will Tubby bring? Better, more consistent defense; maybe we can play everyone as hard as we do Texas. Also, I’d like to see enough running game to be able to pound the ball from inside the 5 and to protect a small lead, and I think his SEC attitude will help there, too. The question, of course, is whether we can improve in these areas without falling off in others.

We are debating whether or not to renew our tickets; if the price jumps again, Tech will have made the decision for us.

We HAVE cut off our departmental donation, since the administration grabs OUR money, throws it into the general (slush)fund, and then THEY decide how to spend it, despite the fact that we earmark it for a particular department. Their contempt for us seems unbounded.

Former Auburn and Ole Miss football coach Tommy Tuberville would like to hear from Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins about the open KU job, Tuberville told The Star on Thursday. Tuberville, who led Auburn to a perfect season in 2004, said he had been contacted by some other schools about their vacancies but wasn’t interested. “Kansas is a good program,” said Tuberville, 55. “It’s in a conference that you can compete in. It’s really come leaps and bounds over the last few years, going to the Orange Bowl a couple years ago. Obviously, Kansas has made a reputation in basketball, and that’s great. But I think that can just help the football program. You can win in both sports.” – Kansas City Star

The 5-7 season Coach T had in 2008 came after academic issues as well as key injuries to offensive personnel. He chose not to coach in 2009….it wasn’t because of a lack of interest in him. The best advice I can give to the team is to hold on to your tails because you are going to experience extremely intense workouts!! Good Luck and Tech definately has the right person for this job.

does not come to Alabama, Tubs still at Auburn. The TT program is in pretty good shape now and Coach TT will make it better. I think Coach TT was waiting for the right situation to come along and I think Tech is a good fit for him.
I think there are a lot of other coaches in the Big 12 that did not want to see him at Tech. Word in Alabama is that James Willis who is presently linebackers coach at Alabama will follow Tubbs to Lubbock. I expect there will be other staff changes as well. I think he will pretty much keep your offense in place and let his OC run the show. He is a CEO type guy.
I hope Tech fans stay behind the program and support the hire. When you get an SEC type defense to go with that offense
Tech will be hard to handle. In my opinion a pretty good football program just got better.

I wouldn’t imagine it to be a secure and hopeful position, coming into a situation where someone was robbed of their coaching position for clearly political and financial reasons. Just knowing that the top dogs of this university would do this to such a beloved coach or to any faculty member or TTU employee is enough to make Tubbs wonder if he’s just leaped into the snake pit in Lubbock, I’m sure… I imagine knowing that puppeteers of Tech have recruited you, is also not something sweet to swallow as you board the plane for Preston Intl’ Airport. It must be an unsettling acceptance for him to imagine looking up above the strings, behind the curtains as Gerald, Kent and a few others work the marionette strings…. Tubbs, I’m sure you’re a great guy but you are walking into a situation where high level administration abuse their employees and look the other way when there is wrong doing. This is a school that has not always been in bad shape, but is most certainly, in bad shape right now because of mismanagement of employees all across the board, from all departments, down all of the lines. Tech trains their lawyers to first deny wrong doing, instead of ethically looking at the evidence and for solutions. This infiltrates the integrity of the university. That matters. They look the other way to wrong doing and frankly, thousands of people are tired of it. Leach was the LAST STRAW in a large expanse of deeply buried, broken backs. If this happened to Leach, it could happen to you… It is happening to other employees who won’t carry the national headlines to get justice. Think about it. Do you really want to jump aboard such a poorly managed school that doesn’t care about it’s own employees? Leach found out the hard way. Think on it before you leap. I urge the school leaders to humble themselves and correct the mistakes they’ve made. Own up to it and show the students of the school what it’s like to admit fault when it’s due. Maybe they will too one day when it’s required. Tech execs didn’t give Leach a fair hearing. They don’t treat their employees fairly.

One thing I can say for TT fans is that we are spirited! Too bad we take it out on each other.

I remember back when it was TT College and they tried to fill the stands by having all the local Jr and Sr High Schools bands come to a game. It didn’t work. Yet still everyone there yelled and screamed for our Red Raiders to win. They did. We need to support our team and cheer for them no matter the coach or how poorly Tech management has handled things.

For those who feel we have more to do than just complain about things, then we have to decide how we are going to handle it. I personally feel Leach should not have been fired, at least without due process. I feel the TTU admin handled this whole situation very poorly no matter the view of Leach. I feel this is indicative of how they handle all the schools and all the campuses including athletics. I feel there is a LOT more to be discovered regarding the James family; Spaeth Communications and political promises made. I feel I have only two ways to bring attention to the problems. 1) Support “Team Leach”, not from a get Leach back standpoint but to keep constant pressure on Hance, Bailey and Myer. 2) I have put my donations for Tech in escrow. Once things are settled I will then release them to the school. I will still attend games and wear my TT clothes (only ones I already own). I want the world to know what a great school Tech is and I want Tech to beat the world in ALL sports, not just football. I strongly believe the only way to achieve this is to replace at least Hance and Myers and ban Jim Sowell from any involvement in Tech management in any way.

TT is a great hire for Tech. Better than I thought they could do. Please remember, Leach never won the Big 12. Tuberville won the much tougher SEC and had an undefeated season. He is defensive minded, which will only help Tech. Coach Ruff seems like a great guy and good motivator. His defense though has never been better than mediocre. Hopefully Coach Tubbs keeps the offensive scheme in place. Hopefully Coach Leach gets a ton of money for the crap he has had heaped on him by the losers in the administration.

Tuberville is a great hire and he will make Tech a better football program, especially with the schedule he has in 2010.

The administration just has to be thankful that Tub was interested in Tech.
They were in no way ready to pay 2 mil per year, but they had to, that was the only way they could save face.
Tuberville is going to cost Tech twice as much and ticket prices will go up to pay for the difference.
The Leach process was handled terribly and without any thought on the administration and now it is going to cost all of us and the administration knows it, just like the govt stick it to the tax payers.

Tommy Tuberville is an excellent choice for TTU. There are more than 30 former Aurburn players in the NFL, maybe 10 or 11 from TT – so much for Leach the recruiter. Prepare for bigger, faster, stronger teams.

Perhaps you watched the Alabama-Texas game. Defense won that game for Alabama. Auburn had defenses like that under Tuberville (beat Alabama SIX times in a row – equivalent to Tech or A&M beating UT 6 times in a row). It’s hard to say when the Big 12 quit playing defense, but TTU is going to have a defense. It will probably take a year or two, but you can forget about those 65-21 humiliations (when ranked #2 in the country).

Coaching staff is probably lucky Tuberville doesn’t have an intact staff. He would likely replace everybody, and he might anyway. You can also say goodbye to the cult of personality surrounding Leach. If you are a Leach lemming, just keep swimming – he’s already over the cliff.

    I respectfully disagree:

There was no formal coaching search.
Tuberville would not have been on the list if he had not come begging for the job.
We hired the only candidate not named Ruffin McNeil.

The firing was handled very poorly.
    Our administration looks like buffoons.

Think back to how this started- a misbehaving child was put in timeout, no other school in the country would fire or suspend a coach on the that basis.

Golfwoody has a conscience and is very methodical and rational with his plan….I like that Golfwoody feels he or she has the power to stand against the establishment for what is unacceptable but the honor not to bail from the support of the school in some ways. That’s what I mean too. It’s not an attack on the school you love to not accept wrong doings that occur in it. It means you truly love and support it, in fact and are not a FAIR WEATHERED TECH FRIEND. If you support the school, you support the way the upper level establishment treats the employees and you protest wrong doings in an effort to make things better for others… that means the guy in the parking booth, the student interns, the students, the receptionists, the teachers the administration support people and historic great coaches deserve fair consideration. Every one of those souls and more deserve to be heard. They deserve fairness. If Tech is wrong, then they should go back and make it right. The Snake Pit Puppeteer Club has allowed many buried cases of poorly treated employees throughout the schools, in many departments. Many of these people have fallen by the wayside. No justice for them. The school’s leaders and legal teams have looked the other way when people with less clout have begged them to correct mistakes and do the right thing. Some are fighting for their rights, right now… like Leach. And some employees never had enough money or ability to fight TTU’s unethical lawyers, leaders and instant execution-style posse. Support your school. Fly your flags high. Welcome a new coach, if you like, but do everything you can think of to JUST SAY NO TO POOR TREATMENT OF TECH EMPLOYEES, no matter what position they hold. Tech is only as good as it’s people. If we allow people to be treated badly, then we don’t love our school.

The reason the last 10 years of at least going to bowls is so pleasing for so many is the previous decades of not even going to bowls. To win the Big 12 we have to beat UT and OK in the same year. We are now in a place they actually have to take us seriously, not so for so long. We have to beat the champions by playing like champions – with a powerful offense AND a rock solid defense. I liked Leach. He took over a team that did not have a winning attitude. The talent we had could not compete with the other Big 12 teams by just trying to do what they were doing. He gave us something different. Yeah, all offense all the time, but at least it was different. Now other teams are copying Tech’s offense. His shortcoming was he did not know what to do about defense. Until he turned it over to Ruffin, there was NO defense. If we can maintain our offensive power and Tuberville/Ruff give us a champion level defense then we may have been upgraded. The good point about your statement is that you are looking forward.

Adam James will probably sit out a year. This ensures he does not do anything to shame dad’s senate run. He will claim it was because he was so mentally hurt by this experience his doctor recommends he skip a year. Then he will show up at a different school once the election is over.

If he stays then Tuberville is in a no win situation. If he plays Adam it will seen as payback for a “favor” or he has caved into the hovering dad (now senate candidate). If he does not play him, Tommy will be asked why . If it is because Adam was still not putting out effort, Tuberville will get hit with so many questions that will not be helpful to the team. He could also be fired for cause. (Just cause.)

I am reading many of these comments and see a lot of mixed reactions. I am an Alumnus, Athletic Donor, Former Player and season ticket holder at Auburn University. What Tommy Tubberville did for Auburn is remarkable. When he took over the AU program he was faced with TERRIBLE talent left from Terry Bowden. He immediately made a drastic impact in recruiting bringing in classes that were ranked consistently in the top 10. He is amazing scout for talent – Jason Campbell, Brandon Jacobs, Ronnie Brown, Cadillac Williams, Devin Aromashodu just to name a few. These are just some of the current players that you hear about every Sunday. Also under Tubberville, AU had the #1 ranked defenses in the SEC and Nation almost his entire tenure with the Tigers. He is also a remarkable scout for assistant coaches. He did make 2 bad hires, but those 2 can’t out weight the good. He introduced the nation to AMAZING coaches and developed these coaches into major names in the college football world. Names like -Bobby Petrino, Gene Chizick, Paul Rhoades, Will Muschap, Al Borges and Eddie Gran.

To say Tubbs is a 2nd tier coach is crazy. 1993 National Coach of the Year says alot. Tubbs was an outstanding D coordinator under Jimmy Johnson at Miami and RC Slocum at A&M.

But one of the most amazing stats from Tubberville ….6 straight wins over Bama and yep 4-1 against The Mighty Nick Saban.

The AU Nation has missed Tubbs, but we had to move on and support our new leader. I can understand the Texas Tech Nation’s anger towards the athletic department and they way Leach was fired. However, if you are truly a Red Raider and it’s in your heart, you will embrace this change.

But I don’t think that’s race related. lol Btw— I think you can run the company you work for and everyone has the right to rise up,… but you may not want to. A lot of responsibility comes when you are a leader over a huge entity, especially like TTU. That’s why I and others are upset with what I call the snakepit… the inner core of Tech that has the power to make decisions like… — firing Leach without a fair hearing and without facts. As a leader, you have to treat employees fairly and not violate policies just the same…. and when one steps forward and proves that they were wronged— it must be addressed if you CARE ABOUT THE SCHOOL/BUSINESS– whatever. — I’m keeping it to SPORTS, but I am also agreeing with several others on here that the lapse in personnel management is seen in other entities of the school, not just sports. I think it’s very fair to make that analogy because what happened to Leach and what happened to many other employees under the label “TECH” is relevant… and as#ociated with the inner core management of the school. IF Tech leaders and legal point persons are not caring to listen to facts or reason and are not repairing any brokenness laid out before them, then it’s no surprise that the Leach thing is one part of a greater systemic issue…

Auburn and TTU are very similar schools. They are both terribly underrated academically. Both schools have certain programs – engineering, architecture, ag sciences, ect. -that are the very finest in their respective states. Coach Tuberville will be something of a pain in our backsides – West Texas may be the only part of the country large enough to contain his ego. But what he will bring to the Red Raider table is this – speed on defense. Say what you want about Tebow and Ingram, the reason that the SEC has been so dominant the past several years is speed on defense – it intimidates other teams from all other parts of the country. If he will leave the offense in place, give him 2 years to recruit, and Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma will wonder when they are on offense “where are all these guys coming from.” Guns Up – National Championship (our first) in 2013.

Lee, I agree with you that at a university the students should come first. I also agree with Rob1910 that our administration is inadequate in handling many things and situations including the Leach fiasco.

For discussion sake let’s make Leach 100% wrong about everything and has been his entire life. The administration had their chance last year and failed. Maybe they could not get anyone good in February and Leach would not sign a one year contract, so they plotted a “give him whatever he wants, then fire him next year” plan. That is wrong. If they do this to Leach they will do it to the head of the English department, or the music department, or the engineering department, etc. In every case, it is wrong. There is question about whether they kept within the guidlines of their own contract. There should be no question. Either they approved a flawed contract or they abused it. In either case, this is not good. They rushed through due diligence to obviously save $800K and now has Tech in court. Wrong. Based on Craig James’ statement that he and Hance were in business together there is question about conflict of interest. (I do not trust James so this may have just been talk on his part.) If true, they again are wrong. Now dial up the possibility that Leach is 10% right, everything amplifies. If he is 50% right then the Tech admin has put us in a terrible position.

Of course if Leach had just let James stand around instead of walk (a privilege no one else gets) we would not be here. If Adam James applied himself then there would not have been a problem between he and the coach. If Craig James, when he heard his little boy was lazy and had a bad attitude back last year (or before) had been a dad and straightened out his kid, we would not have this problem. If the administration let Leach have the $800K he was due, let him coach the Alamo Bowl and did a complete investigation, then we would not be in this situation. Either he would still be coach (like it or not) or Tech would have had solid information to terminate him with cause, and no lawsuit.

Now if any of the rumors are true about this whole James thing being a setup to get rid of Leach and promote Craig James’ senate race by showing what a family man he is, then someone may be showing up wiht handcuffs. If Spaeth Communications is a part of a master plan and Hance and others knew about it, we will not have to woryy about them being fired, the state will take care of it for us. Sorry for ranting, but just these few things so upset me about the inabilities of Hance, Bailey and Myer.

For fear of losing one of only two candidates and looking as if he had no choices because no one wanted to work under these gurus, he pursuaded the decision makers to hire him immediately. Another premature trigger pull predicated on ego and perception. How embarrassing it would be for the administration to lose a candidate to lowly USF! Interesting thing is there was significant support for RM from one person in particular. Some believe that person will ensure Myers retirement after Tech settles the ML lawsuit. Can’t let him go before for fear of creating the perception he bumbled the ML incident. If TT keeps the current staff, Tech has a chance to sustain success. Did anyone note TT’s comment about not changing the air raid “much”. He destroyed three offensive schemes at AU by not changing them “much”. I hope he learned something.

I was pulling for Coach McNeill to get the job but,

    1) His lack of an offensive grasp (THAT’S WHAT SELLS THE TICKETS, NOT HARD HITTING DEFENSE ALONE!!); Tech would have taken a “GIANT” step backward and they would be right here again next year hiring someone else, Coach McNeill’s rep would be ruined and any chance to get a HC position where he could succeed.

    2) When you have a Top 25 program, this is not OTJ training. In college ranks, other than Turner Gill (Kansas) and Kevin Sumlin (Houston) most of the AA coaches are defensive specialists. Having a firm offensive grasp and philosophy is the way to go.

    3) You can not argue against the Tuberville hire. Mcneill vs. Tuberville is comparing apples to oranges. He has a tremendous track record and at his last stop he had the misfortune of being the coach of a program with unrealistic expectations. He has the experience of running a big time program, Coach McNeill does not. Please don’t make this a racial issue. I believe Coach McNeill will get an opportunity that is appropriate for him. He handled the team and himself well through this ordeal (that speaks volumes for him), gave good intgerviews, was very articulate (

    1) His lack of an overall offensive grasp (THAT’S WHAT SELLS THE TICKETS, NOT HARD HITTING DEFENSE ALONE!!); Tech would have taken a “GIANT” step backward and they would be right here again next year hiring someone else, Coach McNeill’s rep would be ruined and any chance to get a HC position where he could succeed.

He handled the team and himself well through this ordeal (that speaks volumes for him), gave good interviews, was very articulate (even the networks and other Head Coaches were impressed with him). Trust me he we get a shot in the near to lead a program.

The money they’re giving Tubs isnt that much less then Mike Leach’s contract. The the good ole boys felt intimidated by Mike so they moved him out. Don’t expect Tubs to keep the offense the same for that long. He can’t run the spread, unless he gets a offensive coordinator who really knows the system. Tubs runs the ball..That’s what he does. But he’ll fit right in with the good ole boy administration. We’ll see how he does…

To not be an insult to the fine legal minds on the Tech campus (not a sarcastic remark, I think the law school has many great lawyers), it is my guess there is either an outside firm that specializes in sports contracts who did the Leach contract, or they took a basic boiler plate and ‘told’ legal what to put in it no matter the advice legal gave them.

Of course there is the possibility – just conjecture – that Sowell, located in Dallas, after having lunch with Craig James, located in Dallas, contacted Spaeth, in Dallas, about the best way to handle this Leach problem. They devised a possibility and gave it to Sowell. He then takes it to Hance, Bailey and Myer who giggle and say “lets do it!” and Spaeth got a law firm of their choice to write it up. Now add in the side stories, such as Craig James’ timing for announcing his possible senate run and you get a lot of connection with all the same players. Or how it was Spaeth who released the Adam James cell video. A video that was NOT the room he was in, but they made sure they released it. Much like political people do when they want to insinuate something. And the story goes on and on.

If TTU officials had known a year ago what they know now, they would not have extended Leach’s contract. So they made a mistake. If Leach had still been their employee when he made that ESPN national interview where he called Adam James lazy and other things as well, then they would really be in trouble.

If Leach believed those things about Adam James, then why did he not throw him off the team? Why did Leach sue to coach in a game while he was suspended? I don’t think his contract gives him a right to coach – it’s an employment contract. The University suspended him because he had been accused of what might be considered abuse of one of his students. They could not continue to let him coach in the interrim. Such administrative paid leave during investigations is common, and it is possible he would have been cleared in such an investigation. Again why did he sue to coach that game? He’s a lawyer; maybe he knew TTU would be forced to fire him

From a distance it looks like he was 100% wrong in handling the Adam James concussion issue (I know nothing about other Leach issues). I believe he would have been fired after an investigation, but while the investigation was ongoing, I think a settlement of some sort would likely have been reached. His suit to overturn the suspension while under investigation forced the hand of the administration. They had to fire him. It looks to me like they would not have fired him before the bowl game, and he would have collected his extra $800,000 had he watched the game from the stands.

Just wanted to add a little information to this ongoing lunacy. Have just spent the weekend in Dallas at a convention with people from all over the country and world. Numerous people asked me where I was from and i told them I lived in Lubbock, Texas. NO ONE said anything to me or asked me about Mike Leach, TTU, Adam James, TTU football, Elmer Fudd, Porky Pig, Lady GaGa, or any other superficial topic. There was no ongoing coverage of the life upheaval that Mike Leach’s firing is believed to have caused to the universe. There are no protestors in the streets clamoring for his reinstatement, nor pictures of TTU administrators being burned along with chants of “”death to the tyrants.” The only acknowledgment of TTU football I saw was the running line on ESPN indicating Tuberville would be named the next coach. The bigger college football story seems to be Pete Carroll.

So, get some perspective and let’s go back to the things that are important in living our everyday lives. Unfortuantely, there will be plenty of stories about lawsuits over the next year or two to keep you from thinking about your own lives and responsibilities.

Never a fan of Leach (same winning percentage in Big 12 play as Spike) but he finally seemed resigned to ride it out with us, and I believe as a direct result was beginning to recruit like a viable alternative to UT and OU. So yeah, still bitter at Myers.

    >>>>> If they were so unhappy withLeach why would they have not just left the existing contract in place? Yes, Leach may have left but it would have taken care of their plan. Again as you said, a mistake.
    >>>>> Just one of many reports about Adam James being lazy – Texas Monthly reported that last March the reporter sat in on a coaching session and the discussion amoung all the coaches discussed James lack of effort and laziness. Why did they keep him – all I can figure is for either political reasons or maybe he was waiting until the end of the season.

If Leach believed those things about Adam James, then why did he not throw him off the team? Why did Leach sue to coach in a game while he was suspended?
    >>>>> $800K and he truly felt he had done nothing wrong (whether he did or not)

    >>>>> The coach at South Florida hit a player in November and they investigated it until this past week. He finished the season and coached them in their bowl. There is little question whether they had fully investigated it or not. In Leach’s case it was so quick there is question whether there was time for everything to surface.

Tuberville is good choice. How many of you had ever even heard of Leach before he became our head coach? Leach built our program to the point that we were at least able to get a coach that has experience being a head coach in a big conference. The last time that Tech hired a coach with any significant head coaching experience was Steve Sloan—too long ago for many of you unloyal bellyachers to remember, that was the last time until last year that we were in the national limelight. After Sloan left, we suffered through Dockery, Moore, McWilliams and the early years with Spike before he learned that a football team needed to have an offense and not just all defense. I loved Leach while he was here, but he’s gone so get over it, get on board with coach Tuberville, or jump ship, we don’t need or want you. I’m not a Tech grad … so some unbiased outsider thoughts …

Tech should be proud now since they have something in common with ‘Bama (the FCS champs with a BIG FAT ASTERISK because Texas lost its best player very early and ‘Bama still had to hang on to win).

What is the thing in common – Tech is just as RACIST as ‘Bama. Few years back, Sylvester Croom (played at ‘Bama under Bear Bryant; coached under Bryant) had the pedigree that a ‘Bama coach needed … but he is BLACK so he didn’t even get a sniff. Ruff should have gotten the job … but he is BLACK. Don’t kid yourselves. Do you think Ruff would have been passed over if he was WHITE?

And what a class act Tuberville is. When he skipped out on Ole Miss for Auburn, he didn’t even have the class to say goodbye to the kids he recruited to play for him!

That is something else Tech and ‘Bama has in common now. Saban is a LIAR and Tuberbill is a JERK. Yes two really “classy” coaches. A couple of guys you can really “believe” when they open their mouths.

If Tuberville succeeds and a better opportunity comes calling, maybe then he will at least say good-bye to the kids he recruited before he skips town.

First of all, James Beard… I think I busted out, laughing at your post… I don’t know why, but the dry, randomness of that thought was cla$sic.

Secondly, Golfwoody, once again.. I bow down to the details and thoughts you explore. Your observations based on facts and then others based on possibilities is informative and interesting to think about. I hope the reporters are picking up on some of your ideas. There’s a site that maps political figures and who they are connected to in work, organizations and philanthropies. And it’s very interesting to see the relationships of people and their interests. Your last post reminds me of that site’s purpose. The connecting of the dots here in the Leach firing timeline of events and people involved, just from an exploratory angle, is fascinating. You know when things don’t make sense to us… and departures are abrupt and without warning, or without fairness… or seem to leave a trail of tears behind… this is what happens…. Human nature tends to want to explore the scenarios and rightly so. It’s only natural to wonder why and how things went so wrong. If things were handled with protocol and common sense regarding Leach, there would not be so many unanswered questions and mysterious aspects here worth probing. There are politically fueled things going on here and to what extent, I can only hope that we are allowed to get to the bottom of it. But the mere fact that we quest to get to the bottom of it at all is because of how senseless and ambushing things actually were when Leach was fired before Tech officials and lawyers cruised off for the holidays. It was downright trashy, to be frank. I’ve seen Tech strike a match and run on several shameful issues. But I believe this particular situation has detonated a much larger-targeted, nastier, career-killing bomb that will have shrapnel flying for months ahead, taking all out in the strike zone, legally speaking. And all of this… could have been avoided if people in very fortunate places of power could have simply made… a fair and just decision, not a decision that shot from the hip or more tragically, one that was layered in premeditation.

Leach was successful because he was able to recruit good players to execute and believe in his system. Football is about beating the guy across from you whether its wishbone, spread, razorback or whatever. Hopefully the defense will improve- it will have to to beat the big boys

This reminds me of when OU won the National Championship with Leach’s offense (after Leach was gone) and Bob Stoops defense. The spread system is in place here and is the best in the country. Mix that with Tuberville giving us a strong defense and we should be contenders for a while. I think our recruiting will improve by leaps and bounds now too.
We were #2 in the country last year and then had the #25 recruiting class. That has to change.

Coach Tuberville: The formula for packing the stands and winning over the alumni is to win the Big 12 conference and go to a BCS game. We have never been to a BCS game because we have never had an elite defense. An elite defense would give this team the National Championship.

From a neutral point of view(OK I’m a bit off I am a Notre Dame fan in Oklahoma……I know dumb moves) this really seems like a lateral hire. Your defense should get better. Your offense should decline. I don’t care what TT says about running the offense. In the end the puppet master is gone and every time a little change is made it will be away from what you do now.

TT had ONE great year at Auburn and the rest not quite there….as is normal for them. Don’t think he will just run circles around others recruiting. He recruited as well as he did at Auburn because…..He was at SEC Auburn. He will not recruit as well in Lubbock because he is at Big XII Texas Tech (no offense), Most kids chose other Texas schools or OU first.

That said you had a chance to hire a FORMER SEC coach with experience. Most schools would have done the same whether its right or wrong. You will hopefully stay about where you are. Age withstanding I do think he is on the market right now he could move in a couple of years. Keep him for four or more and you might have him for the long haul (be careful what you wish for.

But here is the rub……Can’t go to the press conference and you are upset. How much do you love your school and hate what happened. Forget the cold show up outside tomrrow. Show up in droves.
