Players hope Team Leach becomes Team Ruff
By Friday afternoon, Team Leach — which has a Facebook group page in support of the fired Texas Tech coach — had grown to almost 58,000 members.
Baron Batch isn’t one of them. At least not anymore.
“We need the fans to be behind the players,” the Tech running back said Friday. “We need the fans to be behind these coaches we’re going to have. We can’t have what’s been going on these last two weeks.
“Eventually, the ‘Team Leach’ stuff has to stop. What happens when they hire a coach? Are you still going to do the ‘Team Leach’ stuff? The ‘Bring back Leach’ stuff?’
“Eventually, they have to start supporting us again,” Batch said of the remaining players and coaches.
Team Leach is turning up the heat in its protest of Mike Leach’s firing. Three Team Leach billboards were unveiled Friday in Lubbock, and the group plans a rally at 1 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Circle on campus.
“They will not let us put up a stage or a sound system,” Team Leach spokesman Charlie Hodges said. “It’s going to be a nice little quaint affair with megaphones. But we’re very grateful for the fact we were allowed to be on Memorial Circle.”
Tech players continue to say interim head coach Ruffin McNeill is the solution — to mend fences and keep the program going forward. The Red Raiders won at least nine games in four of the last five seasons. In his college head coaching debut, McNeill led Tech to a 41-31 victory in the Alamo Bowl, three days after Leach was fired and five days after he’d been suspended.
“To tell the truth, I really didn’t think it was going to be this big of a thing to pick a new coach after how the players responded and how everyone was acting after the bowl game,” said quarterback Steven Sheffield, who rallied Tech to the bowl win. “I don’t see any reason why Coach Ruff shouldn’t get at least a one-year opportunity to prove what he can do with this team.”
Sheffield said 90 to 95 percent of Tech players share his opinion.
“No less than 90 percent,” he said. “I mean, there’s no way. And I talk to a lot of people on the team.”
McNeill and Tommy Tuberville interviewed for the job on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Tuberville was 110-60 in 14 years as a head coach at Mississippi and Auburn.
Middle linebacker Brian Duncan made an unsolicited call to The A-J, wanting his voice to be heard on McNeill’s behalf.
Duncan said McNeill has “changed the atmosphere” of the team in the last two weeks, adding the Red Raiders respect his leadership.
“I can speak for the entire team,” Duncan said. “It showed not only before this incident, but every time Coach Ruff would get up to speak. All eyes are on him. All mouths are closed. And after he speaks, things change.
“Bowl week, he completely took over. We had a different atmosphere in practice. It was just fun to be around him. He lit up the whole team, and it showed in the bowl game.”
Duncan plays directly under McNeill, who is both his position coach and defensive coordinator. But Batch says McNeill reaches players other than just his defensive guys.
“One of the biggest things he brings to the table is he’s a motivator,” Batch said. “He just really commands players’ respect and attention and effort. Effort is one of the biggest things. When you’re around him, you have no choice but to give everything you have.”
Sheffield fears bringing in a substantially new staff “would do nothing but lead to another rebuilding year.” He said with where the program is right now, it’s not the time for players to have to learn new offensive and defensive systems and a new way of doing things.
Sheffield said the Raiders’ time will be better spent continuing to do what they’ve been doing instead of learning a new staff’s schemes and “who we have to impress and how we have to impress them.”
“Nothing against Tuberville,” Sheffield said. “I’ve looked at everything he’s done. He’s a very good coach. He has a good track record, a lot of people in the NFL and all that. But I think it’d be an easier adjustment on the entire team, just because it’d be nice not to have to totally start over.”

If that’s how the players really feel about Ruffin, why not give him a one-year shot? It sounds like they could continue to play very well under Ruff. Can’t wait til’ the season starts! Wreck ‘Em Tech!

This confirms what my source tells me, once again. I know T-bone didn’t believe me yesterday. Maybe he will now. Sheff makes a very compelling point. Regarding healthy/winning programs, continuity sustains success while change degrades success. A struggling/losing program, typically needs the change. TCU, Wisconsin, Utah, Boise State, Oregon, Iowa, Nebraska and OU are a few who promoted within and sustained success. The model is tried and tested through the years. Change is more than O & D schemes. Personalities and chemistry also come into play big-time. Ruff is the best solution to this bad situation. Give him a two year contract. If he doesn’t cut it, go after Briles as he will be tired of losing at that point.

I support Coach Ruffin too. But I (and all the other fans who feel the same way) have the right to make our feelings known about the wrong Tech did to Coach Leach, and the fact that the Tech administration STINKS! Hey guys, I’ll cheer for you this fall but if you don’t like us expressing our First Amendment rights that’s too bad! Maybe you could take some courses in history or political science-after all, you might learn something. Meanwhile, I’ll suggest that you fellows learn to hold onto the ball this year during big games.
One of Tech’s greatest players, Zach Thomas, is cutting all ties with his alma mater because of this mess. Have you current players ever stopped to think about why he might be doing that? Zach bleeds scarlet and black, and most Tech people know this has to be a very painful thing for him to do.
My feelings about my alma mater, Texas Tech: “Patriotism means supporting your country all of the time, and your government when it deserves it.”

Baron Batch , the Team Leach is about how Mike Leach and How he was fired and all the circumstances surronding it, Team Leach wants a accountability of the people behind this, regents, president and chancellor and the athletic director. I personally feel your former coach was railroaded and fired for no just cause and many others im sure would agree world wide, we would like to see Ruff, a lot of us around 70% or more this isnt about getting Coach Leach back that is not going to happenI wouldnt if I was him, personally, this is about right and wrong, this whole mess should have never got this far in the first placein a lot of peoples opinion, I am speeaking, posting on this, I do not represent Team Leach but Iam a member, and a lifelong fan 50 years, through good and bad. we appreciate what coach Leach hasdone for Tech and the fansand the businessesof Lubbock that have gained from the sucess of the program under Leach, sorry but we will not be Quiet and we will be heard come hellor high water, we belive in what we are doing and belive it is the right thing to do. this is again about loyalty, integrity, honor, truth and what is right, you and your team members may not agree with allof this and that is your right and I respect that, this is America…

Batch is a great football player but needs to do some homework before spouting off against the “Team Leach” effort. The “Team Leach” program is all about having the truth brought to light and giving Coach Leach his due. We all know that Coach Leach won’t be back on the sidelines and the true Red Raider fans will get behind McNeill if he’s chosen. But right now, in the court of public opinion, Batch is but a blip. Sheffield but a speck. That still leaves James as a jerk, but I digress.
The Texas Tech Administration has some explaining to do. There were far too many accusations without investigations; investigations without proof. Too many actions whose timing appeared to be more of convenience and urgency than of due process.
In the end, perhaps Coach Leach did warrant being terminated for cause. Until the facts are revealed, however, there remains reasonable doubt in many, many (at least 58,000) peoples’ minds as to what the motivation was behind the entire action.

I have watched with dismay as all this has transpired. I feel for Coach Leach because no matter what he does now he has become an abusive coach in many people’s eyes. I think ESPN was wrong in their slanted reporting, too. The politics of all this are so typical. If Zach Thomas is cutting all ties with Tech, there must be a reason! Why do all the former players support Leach? Because he was their mentor and inspired them to do great things. If Adam James didn’t want to do the work he shouldn’t be allowed to play. Also, the trainer Pincock–what is up with him changing his story? That’s just wrong. The whole thing is just wrong!

Nothing against Ruff, but Batch sounds like a puppet for the admin quoting the same ole party line they have written. Listen to Graham Harrel, Zack Thomas and numerous other former players who are allowed to speak the truth. The truth is the truth and it’s not what the party line is preaching. Where do the players think the money comes from to fund their scholarships? Duh……..from alumni and boosters, like Team Leach. If they want us to listen to them, they had best listen to us! We are pulling financial support until the truth is out and changes are made! WE THE PEOPLE ARE TEXAS TECH!

Baron Batch……Team Leach is a revolt against 3-5 people in the Tech organization/administration/Board Regents/boosters that felt their personal agenda was more important than the majority opinion of Tech alumnus, student body, and Lubbock community!
Baron, keep in mind your carrer will come and go at Tech…..The fans that are outraged at this will be stuck with whatever the result is for decades! And the saddest thing with how “sleazy” the chancellor and admin acted is that winning will not cure this frustration and anger!

How can the fans be behind the Red Raider football team and the players if the administrators who do the hiring and firing are corrupt? Team leach is behind the football team before, during and after the firing of leach. But we have set out to find the TRUTH. If certain people in the Red Raider administration have knowingly committed a crime of injustice to coach Leach we plan to let the truth be told. And let Mr. Batch know Team Leach is here to stay with no plans to give up until Justice is served.

Iagree Cigar, good post, the logical and smart thing to do would be to keep what we have intact even the Michigan State said that we do not want a coach from the outside at this time especially, to me you would be commiting suicide to hire anyone else at this time, plus it will save the recruits dont understand the delay either, dont like the idiots who fired Leach to have the right to hire a coach to me that is pure insanity, knowing what we know at this time. BUT, from what I have seen this past week nothing would surprise me, Im afraid these players are going to get a lesson in Lubbock Lunacy , first hand, hope and pray Im wrong, but I dont think so..

Ok I was at the news conference following the Alamo Bowl and Batch was the most anti Leach player talking . (The school chose 4 players 3 of which said nothing positive and “Sticks” would not comment either way.) Batch obviously has an ax to grind and an agenda to get Ruffin in as Coach and the media needs to recognize that.
I’ll answer his question of “Where is Team Leach gonna be when the new coach is named”
Batchee my friend we’ll be right on TEAM LEACH, still asking questions and demanding a shakeup of the Tech Administration, so go count your blessings that Leach is gone and you won’t have to spend time in the sand pit.

Why would Ruff be worth only a two year contract? as if he needs extra push to be good. Be realistic. How can the standards be different for RM? The only reason Tub has not been hired is because they can not decide if the mess with making the players upset is worth it in the long run.

I think I’ve almost come around to wanting McNeill over Tuberville. Big Cigar’s list of programs went a long way in doing that. TT’s record is impressive, but who knows what he could really do here. Loce Coach Ruf…but is he qualified to have our team competing on a National level?! We want a season like last year–every year. Can he pull this off??? Not so sure about that….

1. This article almost sounds like a press release created by Tech to say how great Ruffin is.
2. Tuberville is going to go to USF anyway (not like Tech was ever seriously considering him anyway) sooooo……..just like Adam James opened the last door for the administration to get what they wanted, USF just opened another one.
3. I don’t appreciate the players saying we need to end “Team Leach”. They are missing the point. I would say the great majority of us understand Leach is gone — and while we may not like it, we accept that sometimes change is good. That doesn’t change the fact that he was unjustly treated by the university, and many of us will stand by him on that.

For all the players, this is not just about a coach – but due process and the way things should work in a place like America where ideas of justice should bear fruit. This is a concept surely Coach Leach could have taught you – but not the current administration. The provisions of his contract were clearly violated. Grow up, get real and welcome to a world where a good ole boy system operates which would never care a bit about you or your opinion, if you didn’t carry a football. I dare say exccept for your status, you would not be accepted (or righlty feel uncormfortable) in the circles where the administration’s leaders move. Get over it and move on – naive and dangerous. I hope that when you enter the big boy world, you realize that moving on and allowing a corrupt status quo to perservere – is morally reprehensible.

Could any of the players that the AJ and DW interview, could they be asked to answer objectively…did Mike Leach put Adam James in any danger…did Leach risk players safety and health? Do they think that ESPN’s coverage….provided they have now had time to go look at it…do they think it was honest and not biased? Even if this particular team may prefer one coach over or another, or are ready to move on with Ruff, can they not at least acknowledge publicly that it is not just that Mike Leach’s career and reputation have been ruined, falsely? Doesn’t a 10 year coach with such accomplishments deserve to have a bad year with a given team and at least deserve more respect than he has been shown, by all involved, Tech Admin, players past and present and local medical like the AJ?

This is no longer about who is or is not coaching TT. I think just about all realize Coach Leach will not return. It is about exposing an administraton comprised, in my opinion, of individuals who are more concerned about power, personal agendas and placing their interests above those of the University. I have no respect for any individual or group that shows no remorse for attempting to destroy a man’s reputation on national television. Baron is absolutely right. He is just trying to do the right thing for Raiderland and that is to make a positive out of a negative. If you really knew much about this young man you know he is made of the “right stuff” and will go a long way. Team Leach is somewhat unnecessary in that Mike is gonna do what Mike wants to do no matter what. Gee aint that been the problem all along? Lets see: interviewing other jobs without informing the AD’s office, not communicating genuinely with the AD’s office and then just simply not managing our program so this type thing would not have happened at all!! I certainly do not think anyone would have wanted it to happen. Sure the majority of us liked Leach most of the time. But the people at the top have a responsiblity to manage and they did what they thought best for our school, not just the football team.
It will get better. We will very very soon have a new coach . It will be a new beginning and hopefully a better foundation for us to build our traditions on. Another easter bunny will come. another Halloween. another Christmas. another recruiting season. Most people will not forget (i wont) but most people will forgive (I will): Coach Leach, the James family, the administration. Team Leach is ok but not permanent……. TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY is permanent and demands respect.
Lets not get so bothered with this we lose sight of our goals. We have lost the battle to win the war. Life goes on – we MOVE ON – Lets get the new coach in here in the next day or two and go coddle our recruits and sell em again on Raiderland. Then lets go beat the hell out of Texas ! Maybe so, Every coach comes with risks though. Tuberville will be rather calm this year, changing little, but extremely competitive in 2011. And rightly so, as every one will give him a year to settle in then expect Big results in 2011.
On the other hand Ruffin will be expected to put up in a big way next year. Where does the pressure really reside at?
With Tubberville, Tech Admin will be able to sit back and relax a little bit from the chaos of Mike Leach for a little while.
With Ruffin, they will have to take a bigger stake in the outcome, holding his hand a little through the process, to cover for their mistakes.

Team Leach is a group of LEACH FANS. They realize he isnt coming back now but want Tech to pay him over 12 million dollars knowing this would greatly damage all Tech athletics. Most claim this will be worthwhile just to see Meyers leave. They proudly claim they will no longer give their financial support to Texas Tech. Some say they wont go to any more games. They praise former players for saying they wont have anything more to do with the university. Some say they dont care what the facts are because they like Leach and hate Meyers.
The courts will decide the case, Leach v Tech —- not Team Leach—-not Meyers—–not Leach
Maybe Tech fans cant agree about terminating Leach, but REAL, TRUE TECH FANS WILL GET BEHIND THIS TEAM AGAIN AND CONTINUE TO SUPPORT TECH.
The group says (about Leach) He should have been allowed to run things his way. Thats what a coach should be allowed to do. Then why not allow the A.D. to do his job now ? Thats what an Athletic Director should be allowed to do.
Is there no confidence in ANY of these board members ? Think Jerry Turner doesnt want whats in Tech’s best interests ? Tech needs and deserves our support !!

Team Leach does not exist to bring back Coach Leach. Team Leach members are outraged that the administration had plans a year ago to fire Coach Leach and when Adam James cried to his dad about being put in timeout, the Tech Administration used that incident to fire Coach Leach.
If Adam had not whined, Meyers and Hance were going to find some way to fire Coach Leach. Why? We don’t know and we want to know. If the Tech Administration had reason to fire Coach Leach what was it? The e-mails from a year ago support the fact that they had plans to fire him this year. Why? No Ruffin. My thoughts.
First, he has been a DC for only 1.5 years. And only got the gig b/c Sentenich was getting lit up. The D has gone from bad to inconsistent under Ruff. For example, gave up 31 to 6-6 Mich State, missing players, in a TTU home game. Gave up 50+ to TAMU at home. Even UNM had TTU worried after a half.
Has there ever been a case of a 1.5-year DC getting a HC gig?
Not trying to be a killjoy, but these issue of 8/9 wins are bogus. Most years, TTU pays 3-4 absolute patsies. The imp record is B12. Wasn’t TTU 5-3? Lost to UofH. Beat MSU. REAL record is 6-4.

I’ll be happy if either Ruffin or Tuberville is chosen, I’d prefer the later.
As far as program’s going from within, Stoops wasn’t from OU. Pelini spent time coaching in the NFL, but finally ended back at Nebraska. Ferentz spent time in the NFL before returning to Iowa. The other programs didn’t really have a choice at the time.
After watching how SEC defenses (or their coordinators) have dominated BCS games for 5 of the last 6 years (with the exception being USC thrashing OU), I find it difficult to argue against bringing in a SEC defensive mastermind, and I just hope he keep our offense somewhat together.
I think that Ruffin has done a good job in getting the defense going in the right direction, but I just don’t feel he has enough experience to take over a Big 12 program unlike the coaches mentioned above. Maybe if he proved himself in the MWC, WAC, or C-USA first.
This hire will definitely affect Tech for the next 10 years, I hope they get it right. As far as those of you who want to pull your support, nice knowing you. Maybe you’d have the dignity to shift your funding from athletics to academics if you were giving money before or even attended Tech.

I mean, he had something to do with their recruitment and matriculation. It worries me that so many of them adamantly lobby for McNeill. Makes me question his ability to discipline them when necessary. I don’t understand why they are all throwing Leach under the bus now. Not one single former player has spoken ill of ML yet. I guess some players just don’t like discipline. The head coach’s job is to be the coach, not their best friend.

It’s just not right, to break ties with him In this way !!!!! He deserves better than this…..From Us All !!!!!!

Williams is and always has been such a homer.
I think some of those players are flat scared silly of a big time college football coach who is going to demand consistent effort from them.
Surely, McNeill is not of that ilk. If so, how do you explain the blowouts, especially to an inferior A&M team – at home?
Coaching college football is not all about who’s the nicest guy or who can pump up the team best with a 45 second pep talk. It goes much deeper than that, and for my money, I’ll take the proven commodity with the big name, big attitude, and all of the gold on his fingers to prove where he’s been and what he’s accomplished.

*Please don’t get confused about the purpose of Team Leach. We all know he’s not coming back. We accept that. We’re abhorred by the unethical and shameful method of his dismissal and the impact that it’s had on his reputation, our school’s reputation, and potentially, the future of the football program. I support Ruffin; I would be overjoyed if he were offered the head coaching spot, but I’m skeptical that the administration will make the right decision with him in light of their growing track record. Leach may have had some quirks to say the least, but his performance was not in question. He was a coach whose leadership completely revamped the Tech football program into one that’s respected, and made it possible to recruit more talented athletes than before, and he was tossed aside in an instant for reasons completely unrelated to his job performance. Who’s to say that the people in charge wouldn’t screw someone else over like that? The weak excuses from the admins and regents have only added fuel to the fire. It shows a lack of respect for everyone within earshot. They don’t care about the opinions of any of Tech’s supporters – not even enough to have made up a decent lie. I think that our concern over Leach’s firing is directly related to concern for the entire team, because we now have no idea which direction Red Raider football will go, and it’s frightening. Tech football is literally the life-force of this city – it has a huge impact on our economy and city pride. I hope for the best, but fear the worst. It would break my heart to see such a promising program go down the tubes. The impact of Leach’s firing will likely not be realized until after these players have graduated. Without a new head coach in place, it’s impossible to predict the potential viablility of the football program as a popular and even profitable entity in the future. It’s not just about the current team’s pride. It’s about the impact this could have on the future of Texas Tech and Lubbock, and all we’re asking is for people to at least be honest with everyone about what led us all to this point.

Mr. Batch does not understand the mission of “TEAM LEACH”. It would not make sense to call our coalition “TEAM RUFF”. This is not about controlling the Texas Tech football program. It is about saving the institution of Texas Tech University. Our goal is to make sure Mike Leach is paid for his work at Tech and for his potential loss of earning after being unjustly fired. Secondly we are adamant about making sure that our school is guided using democratic principles . Dictatorships aren’t typically accepted in this country . The “my school right or wrong” attitude is inconsistent with American values. We seek the truth. Team Leach is not going away anytime soon.

If the Tech football program is doing good, why risk changing what they are doing now? If most of the team agrees with what coach Ruff is doing, having to adjust to someone else could be a big mistake. The team’s true colors are coming out. They were unhappy with a coach who saw himself as bigger than Texas Tech football. Texas Tech football was there before Leach, and it’ll still be there without him now. As for the program, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

The cause Tech used to fire coach Leach was baseless, no one was locked in a closet. If Coach Leach made a mistake it was keeping a whiner and slacker on the team too long, aka Adam Leach. The emails published released by the Dallas Morning News shows evidence of a conspiracy to terminate Coach Leach as early as January 2009. The Tech administration was searching for a cause to fire Coach Leach and they pounced on this frivolous claim by a 21 year old young man with the maturity of a 2 year old in terms of behavior. One of Tech most famous Alumni, Zach Thomas, released a statement cutting all ties to Texas Tech and the “CAUSE” was the circumstances used to fired Coach Leach. Zach bled red and black and he smells a rat also. The heavyweight alumni are making their case now. The Tech administration severely mistook the popularity of Coach Leach and the excitement he brought to college football. Under Coach Leach Tech played the most exciting football in the country. I have been a Tech Fan for 50 + years and this is the lowest point in Tech history in my 50 year + years. The administration still does not understand the positive impact Mike Leach had on Tech’s popularity nationwide. I feel for the university and all the pain and loss of support, loss of funds and loss of popularity this firing has brought to Tech. The Tech administrators who played a role in all of this need to be terminated for being so shortsighted toward the future of Texas Tech. They put their own personal feelings and personal biased against Coach Leach ahead of what is good for Texas Tech.

I am shocked at the tone and direction of this article. I really hope and pray this is not indicative of the direction of Tech Admin. The three players quoted here in support of Ruffin are seniors who only have one more year at Tech. Are we really giving this much weight to 22 year olds who will only play for the new coach one year? Are we really weighing the opinion of kids who will only last one year under the new coach for a coach to lead us the next five to ten years?
I hope our administration is smarter than that.
I am a season ticket holder and a Red Raider Club member. I will continue to do so regardless of the coach. These kids need to realize we supported Leach as much as we supported them and it wasn’t the fans who wanted Leach gone. We will support the next coach and the next crop of players as much as Leach and the guys quoted here.

Could Baron’s attitude reflect the fact that Leach expected him to actually perform up to his ability and did not sugar coat it when he underperformed early in the year???
I think Ruff is the right choice at this time, but one thing he did do wrong in my humble opinion was by not telling the players to keep their personal opinions to themselves. This type of thing could divide a locker room. Any pro Leach players can’t be honest at this point for fear of retribution. Just be quiet and play football, and go to cla$s, something that wasn’t all that important for the football players before Leach got here. The administration was also wrong on this, in asking for their opinion.
The Players should also understand that Team Leach doesn’t mean anti-Ruff. From my perspective, it’s about holding the adminstration accountable. If you do not, then you let those stay in power who were responsible for this nonsense, and leave open the possibility that it could happen again, to Ruffin or anyone else. Team Leach will show up to support the Red Raiders, but we won’t let the administration off the hook for their actions.

Players don’t realize that this could come back to haunt them later in life. So they don’t make the NFL and decide to try coaching….poof, well some any player files a complaint…poof now THEY are unemployed! Better think long term. The Tech administration sure didn’t!

I have a feeling the players know more about the situation and how they feel than a lot of the people turning against them on this forum. Sure, you have the right to be heard. And now that you’ve been heard why don’t you zip it up and start supporting your school and your team. How long are you going to whine about what happened? A lot ot these “Debbie Downers” are the same ones who would want to get rid of Leach next year if he lost 3 games in a row. BTW, Leach’s lawsuit, and the allegations it contains, is a double edged sword. Does he really want everything out in the open for everyone to see? That might be more damaging to his reputation and future than anything else. Get over it and move on.

Baron and Sticks – I have a huge amount of respect for what you do on the field and I love watching you play. Nothing changes that. Here’s to a great 2010!
Baron-cut the fans some slack. Most of us have been around for many years and have been Tech fans through the good and the bad. Mike Leach brought us the good and it stuck for 10 seasons. First time we ever experienced that in my 25 years of being a Tech football fan (I graduated in December of ’87).
I am a proud member of Team Leach. We are not about getting Coach Leach back, that is not going to happen. We are about holding the administration accountable for its actions, which many of us believe were not in the best interest of the university. This goes way beyond football. It is difficult to understand why, if Coach Leach and the university needed to part ways, it couldn’t have waited one week until after the bowl game. And that it could have been done quietly out of the glare of the media. After all Coach Leach has done for Tech, Lubbock and the community, letting him walk away with his reputation intact would have been the right thing to do. And keeping the university and its role out of the media would have kept its reputation intact.
The people who lead and teach young people at universities should have the highest ethical standards and integrity and should lead by example. We need and deserve answers. I would think our student athletes would get behind this movement for honesty and accountability.
Hang tough!

They TTU players (i.e., Batch) have to understand that Team Leach is not about them or a reflection on them. It’s about this school’s corrupt administration’s bad judgment that needs to be addressed. It’s about the Administration’s pride and arrogance to believe that they are bigger than Texas Tech University – FROM HERE IT’S POSSIBLE.
TTU is a PUBLIC INSTITUTION of the State of Texas. As students, alum, and tax payers of this State, we deserve a more competent admin running our school.
Hance, Bailey, and Myer’s action will cost the University millions of dollars in compensation, legal fees, and court fees. Not to mention the bashing to the school’s reputation – which will reduce the amount of students wanting to attend TTU, student athletes, sponsorships, alumni contributions, etc. In the long run who will suffer – Texas Tech University will. This administration’s legacy will be and should be “they damaged and tarnished a our school.”
I hope as a result of TEAM Leach, there is a shake up at all levels and we right this entire mess! Outside of publishing letters to the Raider Nation, and giving sound bite interviews to ESPN and other media outlets, they have yet to publicly address to Tech graduates and fans and feel Raider Nations displeasure first hand
Secondly, do you really expect the young men on this football team to feel any differently about Coach Ruff, than expressing the support they have for him. It is human nature to resist change. There is no doubt Coach Ruff is a good man, whom the players have a great deal of respect for. They know having him as coach is the least disruptive thing that can happen for their lives.
There isn’t any way a one year contract will work. Why would a great recruit come to Texas Tech when the head coach only has a one year contract? Would you?

TTU will hire Ruff as coach because he will come with a cheap price tag. That wiil be the only reason they have. He is probably a great guy, but that doesn’t qualify him to be a head coach. He would never even get an interview at any other Division I college for a head coaching job. Leach has taken this program to one of the top programs in the country. One year with an unqualified coach hired on the cheap could ruin it. The revenue that a winning, successful football program brings to a school is tremendous. Most of the athletic department budget is funded by the football program, so all programs at Tech could suffer from hiring the wrong coach. When a team is winning at football, alumni donations are up, which fund academic programs at the school. When football teams are successful, the school as a whole is seen as a winner and applications to the school go up. Having a larger application pool allows the school to admit better students and raise academic standards. Believe it or not, all of this comes from a successfull, winning, football program, and it is all at risk if the wrong coach is hired.

he’s soooo new he is just doing what Hance says. Think he’ll be OK in the long run. Hance is the Chancellor and
should leave his nose out of any personnel matters unless an action comes up from the actual grievance process
as stated in the Policy & Procedures Manual. Leach’s firing totally went around that process and did not afford
him due process. But his lawyers will attend to that. It was all wrong from the start for Hance to even be involved
in Leach’s contract last year. Should have been Myers and Bailey’s job. The Chancellor’s job should be all about

My Texas Tech friends: First, let me say that I respect your program and I am huge Leach fan and I like Ruff very much and your Admin was wrong to fire Leach…but this article gets to me a little. IMHO your players are contributing to this mess: Adam Jones brings down the coach by complaining, you had a player this year being critical of Leach on Twitter, you have players contacting the AJ and talking to the press about who the next coach should be, despite the fact that a search is ongoing. The fact that the players are lobbying in the press for Ruff shows that he does not have control of the players. I am not saying they are bad kids or anything…it just appears to me that they should be uniting, looking at the some of the things their teammates have done that was not reflective of the team’s interest this year and thinking about how they can be a better team for the next coach, whomever that will be—regardless of whether its the coach they want or not.

A good example of the mishandling of this situation is the statements made by the admin that “You don’t sue your employeer” (that statement just gift wrappled the court case to Leach–it is great proof of wrongful termination).
Another example is the statement’s administrators made that Leach put James at risk for additional injury. I doubt they have medical proof of this statement, so that, good folks, is slander.
If the admin had just watched their ego and mouth, they MIGHT have gotten away with this, but they didn’t and Leach is going to win millions, no doubt about it.

Coach Ruff is a good man. Lets say it like it is, His overweight appearance gives off a perception that he’s undisciplined. The Tech teams of the past few years have been some of the most undisciplined looking groups that I’ve ever seen on a Texas football field. Think WWF! They were # 3 out of 120 Division 1 schools in penalties. Surely the administration wants to get somebody here that will hold players accountable and will require them to cast a better light on the program and university. I’m not sure Coach Ruffin is going to be able to get that accomplished or even wants to tackle that elephant.

Team Leach…Mike Leach University…Mike for Mayor…Mike for President…Mike,Mike,Mike!!!
Who the heck is all this about? I cannot believe what I am reading. Everyone seems to have forgotten who this is really about…the TEAM. If Mike Leach were a TRUE LEADER…A TRUE MAN…he would step up and end this non-sense. If he really CARED about his TEAM, he would hold a press conference to tell the world to quit mudslinging, let the lawyers duke it out in court, and put the spotlight back where it should be…THE TEAM. If anyone thinks that Mike Leach took this team to promince completely by himself, then you are an idiot and insulting the numerous players and Coaches that put their heart and soul on the line every day. Sure, under Mikes direction, but with their own talent.
Mike is so wrapped up in it all, even he is losing sight of what it is about. I ask you…if you were a business owner and was interviewing Mike for a job and all he did was talk smack about his former employer, would you hire him…Hell no! If Mike had half a brain about PR, he would be a TRUE LEADER, tell the world he is moving on, say good things about his former team and the coaches, lick his lips toward the BETTER opportunities that lie ahead and go get them. He is about to mess up any chances to have a better career. All he is going to end up with is a larger settlement from the F***ups in Tech’s admin. and a huge black mark against him. The Admin will have their day soon.
TEAM LEACH…WHAT FUTURE DO YOU EXPECT TO CREATE WITH YOUR PROPAGANDA NON-SENSE? DON’T BREAK YOUR ARM PATTING YOURSELF ON THE BACK…THE ONLY REASON YOU ARE 58,000 STRONG IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO BECOME A MEMBER JUST TO CHECK OUT FACEBOOK TO READ ALL THE STUFF WE ALL CRAVE…YOU REALLY DO NOT HAVE 58,000 SUPPORTERS…DUMB***ES.

Hiring the coach because the players want the admin to is like hiring the dean of the business school based on what the SGA wants. Not the best decision. Opinions are welcome but shouldn’t necessarily be followed. Ruff needs to tell the players to shut their trap and let the process run it’s course.

That will make it ALL BETTER. Just ignore the truth and mabey it will just go away. Great logic. Wouldn’t be nice if Zach Thomas could come back to the expanded Jones that Leach built for some practices? He could light up Batch and Sheffield a few times and the other players who are short sightedly serving as puppets, knowingly or unknowingly, for the Tech Admin. Maybe Zach could jar their minds back to reality that coaching is not a popularity contest. 10 years of work building something for Leach, tacked on to the fantastic body of work and program building by Spike and a great Tech tradition before that, only to have a small few not only bring it to an end, but destroy it so thoroughly and publicly. A sound bite politician/lobbyist in charge of Tech makes this happen, it brings tumult like Alberto Gonzalez, it caters to Bobby Knight out of one mouth and runs off non-conformity and brilliance out of the other. Shame on the AJ, on Tech and the commenters who short-sightedly miss the moment in Tech history. Is Tier 1 for sale…can Hance’s friends buy it?

I will support Tech athletes, and I am not going to let Hence, Bailey, and Myers keep me from loving the Red Raiders. Our players deserve our support. With that said, they are now bumbling the search for a head coach. Are they trying to see how many candidates they can get? Tuberville will take any job right now, and he will not stay more than two years. He will leave for the first SEC job that comes open. Briles is a no go, and Kirby Smart isn’t ready at this point. In West Texas, where we do business on a handshake, loyalty means something. We need to get Ruffin McNeil in here to lead the program. He will be loyal, loves the fans, and will stay here as long as well will have him. He will keep the continuity going and cotinue to lead us forward.
This proves we need a change in leadership. We should have named Ruffin the head coach definitively on January 4th. He fits the current situation. The longer they wait the less confidence it shows in Ruffin. Hire the man and let’s move forward!

If these football players are either too illiterate or too lazy to read Team Leach pages and understand that its fundamental purpose is to seek justice then that is their problem. They HAVE a team because alumni and students support TTU and hence the football team. We have paid millions of dollars to expand the football field, they have state of the art workout complexes, tutoring facilities, etc. I think that it is safe to say that WE SUPPORT TTU football. We do not support lies, deception, and nepotism.
In my entire life I have never seen such overt campaigning by a coach for a position (that his “best friend” had and illegally lost) or seen so much emphasis put on what players wanted. The A.J. and Lubbock media continue to lobby for Ruff with their biased coverage. (How many news organizations have contacted alumni groups to see who we want or have reported on all of the good that Tuberville did at Auburn other than during the day of his visit? Equal time for BOTH CANDIDATES?) With all due respect the football players are looking at the short term. Has the media gone back and looked at Ruff’s entire body of work? He has invited us to do so several times. With Leach he was the special teams coach and defensive coordinator among other things. At best, Ruff has done a mediocre job with Tech’s defense. While it has undoubtedly improved from being one of the very worst in the entire United States, it is no where near an elite defense. The defense’s ineffectiveness was evident in giving up 31 points to Michigan State.
As fans we should be most disconcerted by the fact that TTU is perennially a top twenty-five team. This team has continually improved over the last decade, but because of the poor planning and unfair treatment of Leach only TWO people were even interviewed for this job. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? One is an in-house unproven and mediocre coach (mostly Division II experience) and the other is a great (unemployed) coach from the SEC. I think that this speaks volumes about our administration’s lack of preparation and precipitous actions in firing Leach. They continue to compound Tech’s problems. They really have to go!!!! GO TEAM LEACH!!! and WRECK’EM RAIDERS.

Have any of you talked to a coach? I love Tech and enjoyed seeing so many of the games on TV because of Leach’s success and his offense was one the networks loved to air because of the points scored and the Cinderella aspect of the West Texas school that could. I immediately suspected foul play when the first news of this incident was Suspension instead of Investigation. There was obviously an agenda going on. This administration has committed a crime against Tech even if not against its coach. No doubt the James family used their notoriety as leverage to try to get favorable treatment for little Adam boy. I liked Craig until this. What a mess. i support Team Leach only because we need to know more about whose rights were ignored. I do not support anyone who withholds their allegiance to Tech (ZT). Tech is my school no matter what.
The coach I talked to said “no way you can treat any player differently than all others = same treatment for any injured player no matter their family’s status or name or how irritating they have become”. Leach may have done just that. James family may have provoked it. No matter the outcome – Tech is still my school. I just hope i get to watch as many games from my home in San Antonio as I had enjoyed with Leach at the helm.

People, am I the only one that sees what is going on ,the foot ball team that says supporting Leach is wrong, does anyone really think that people, fans are going to change their minds 58,000 people and climbing, that want the truth and care about Tech and its future, they are not going to change their mind. We as fans do not have the say so of who gets hired no more than the players do , The very same people that started this mess are going to decide who is the next coach and we will not at this time have any say of who it will be in the mean time lines are being drawn in the sand, neither side will budge a inch because they belive they are right , that is division and there is no explainable reason for it, We are losing recruits every day and becoming more and more divided and Techs reputation is suffering every day this madness continues. Solution? very simple, all of this is uncalled for and has completely out of hand now, for the good of the university andd its future ,persons involved in the decision to fire Mike Leach need to resign immediately or face the consequences of further and continued harm to the fans the uniersity and its reputation, but this is only my opiion , isnt America great!

I was initially impressed by the “hire from within” argument until I remembered Green Bay after Vince Lombardi and Dallas after Tom Landry. And do you think the Packers would vote for Lombardi to coach them? It depends on the particular situation and individual. BTW, one of my favorite quotes of all time is Danny White’s comment about his coach at Arizona State: “he gives you someone to turn to when you are sick and tired of everyone being nice to you.”
Also, regarding Ruff’s getting credit for switching to Sticks, I don’t know but doubt that was his decision. The “wazzzuuppp” expression on his face (when it appeared that he learned of the switch) makes me think he was not involved. And if he is such a great motivator, why did it seem that Leach had to call time out many times to personally pump up an underperforming defense? And giving up 31 points to a 6-6, unranked team with 14 players suspended (as well as the Texas A&M debacle) does not make for a good resume for a guy applying for a head coaches job. Would any other D-1 school bother to interview a coach with Ruff’s resume?
Never-the-less, Ruff has some outstanding qualities and seems to be a good guy. I wish him well in his career at Tech or elsewhere, but I don’t think he’s the answer as Tech’s head coach other than to pacify current players and recruits. The team would probably do pretty well next year but would slowly slip after that, IMO. And my vote for my boss is for the guy who will let me spend my time reading and responding to InterNet posts. I won’t worry about the long term success of the company because I.eave soon anyway.

Just to make a comparison. What happened with the Mangino incident at KU. There were a number of players coming out against Coach Mangino. Yet the KU administration took the proper action and investigated the matter. Mangino was not immediately suspended as was Leach. Mangino was allowed to coach out the season while the investigation was on going. He was then allowed to resign in a respectful manner even though it was quite apparent that the allegations against Mangino were much more severe then the claim against Leach. This was a conpiracy, and is an out and out travesty. I have discontinued my season tickets which I have held for 27 seasons. I will not be making any more 4 digit yearly donations to Texas Tech. I may continue both if this issue is resolved in an ethical manner. I want Meyers, Hance, and Bailey’s a$$ the heck out of dodge.

I think we really need to pay attention to the article KCBD published regarding the NBC investigation into Spaeath Communications’ involvment in getting Leach fired. IF this is true, there will be a lot of questions to be answered! Was it all about the James’ family getting Leach fired? Was it ‘”he buisness” Craig James claimed he and Hance were in together? Sowell may have a lot of questions to answer. It will not matter who is coach if TTU and/or James family is allowed to get away with things like this.

I wonder if the players bother reading the e-mails from a year ago showing these idiots conspired to get rid of Leach? How about the fact Adam James didn’t report this “incident” for two weeks and they fired Leach without giving him 10 days to ‘cure’ the allegations as REQUIRED in the contract? Notice USF waited TWO MONTHS before firing their coach and even then gave the coach praise for what he did for the program.
How about…oh who are we kidding? They are scared and/or they are enablers to stand up for Leach because they are afraid of losing their scholarships. Pathetic to see.

I have a hard time getting on the Ruff band wagon. I’ve said it before, he is a good guy, but that doesn’t make him a head coach. These kids are viewing things without historical context. They are looking at this emotionally. I fear Ruffin will set us back to the pre-Leach days. I hope that if they end up picking McNeill that it is not a complete disaster but I fear that within the period of this so called one-year or two-year contract or opportunity, that the program will have been damaged and the new coach (in two years) will have to start all over.

You don’t pick your buddy to be your boss. McNeil is not the answer and by no means at the level of Leach. Tech needs a coach that is at Leach’s level or higher. Preferably someone who can take Tech to the next level.
So far Tech has interviewed one coach outside of Tech. Tuberville. Beyond that nothing. They new Briles had the 4 million buyout before they even called him. If you weren’t willing to pay it…why call? It was a courtesy call. Nothing else. So in reality Tech has talked to two coaches. McNeil and Tuberville. That is called a formality not a coaching search. Tech needs to make more of an effort when it comes down to a coach.
If Tech does not do equivalent or better then Leach…then the Administration might as well pack their bags. Because the Alum will have them tossed out on their fanny’s.

The administration would love to characterize Team Leach as opposed to the team and its players. That’s their strategy and I hope the players and the coaches don’t fall into that trap. Team Leach is demanding transparent due process so that the truth in its entirety comes out come out. That’sthe last thing the admin wants to happen.
Two things to consider:
1. How would any of the coaches or players feel if their careers and reputation had been destroyed based on a set of events, some of which have been proven patently false (the electric closet). Wouldn’t you hope that someone would stand up for your rights?
2. I 100% agree with the players on this point: Ruff should be coach! Forgetting all other issues, if Ruff and the staff are not kept together, they become another casualty of this fiasco and therefore they deserve the same support as Mike. That’s the purpose of Team Leach. I know Ruff and there is no better man, period.
If the players and coaches fall into the trap of Lubbock media, ESPN, etc., who is going to step up for them when they find themselves in the same place?
By the way, it speaks volumes when the most decorated player in the histiry of Tech, Zach Thomas, splits with the school administration over this. Man up players!

You do what you do because you like being a part. No one forces you to contribute. You are someone outside looking in. These young guys are the ones that would know. They are in there day in and day out trying to make a difference.
I think those young men have more wisdom than all the critical nay-sayers put together. If they are ok with this, then you really should respect what they say, because whoever takes over, those players will still be there to make this happen, more than you will be as a speck in the crowd, cheering them on.
You know, politics is a nasty playground that no person with morals and intregrity should have to play on, but this world we serve spits at those trying to do right every chance it gets. So hopefully, more people will stand up for what’s right before they all fall for anything.
Stop bashing these young guys and encourage them to be there best. One of them may be the one you have to depend on in your old age. This is just a short stop for greater things to come.
By the way, how would you appreciate it, if it was one of your kids the world was trying to hold back from saying something that will make an impact in their lives? Think about your child or grandchild being verbally abused. And this is to everyone who has commented negatively about these young men…you don’t know what kind of damage you do when you single out these young men and talk down to them. Each one of them have done what has been asked of them. Someone is holding a card on each and everyone of them, and all they want to do is the best for their future. Unfortunately we can probably all predict the future. Ruff is the coach for 2-3 years, mediocrity sets in again, Tech searches for another superstar and ends up paying the money they should have just paid in the first place, then we rebuild for 2-3 years and the “superstar” moves on to another school and we start the next era of mediocrity.
I just wish Leach, in the process of doing what he has to do, would figure out a way to do it and not harm the kids or his future chances at success elsewhere. Maybe it’s not possible, but it just seams like he is losing respect every time he points another finger. The James Gang, needs to all disappear and raise emus on their Celina estate. :)

Time to settle and get on with this. It is one thing when it effects TT and the micky mouse club but now it is effecting all amateur athletics. My opinion is ESPN has injected itself into amateur sports in many ways to influence outcomes on awards, schedules, rankings now employment. They appeared to step over the lines of sports broadcasting to playing advocate and agent. Sure they are a sports channel not a news channel but the blur is becoming more obvious. We may be entering an era of lawyers on sidelines and coaches keeping a bell of contact to be placed over coaches and staff. Next step non contact football, soccer and flag football. Although Leach brought Tech football to another level, hes never been able to take it to the NEXT level. I mean 10 years and Tech has no Big 12 championships, the biggest bowl win was probably the Holiday bowl and people are so content on mediocrity. Yes I know that it is hard to get players to come and play in West Texas but hell even mark mangino has gone to a bcs bowl.
As far as Ruffin I think hes a good man and good motivator but was Techs defense ever really that good? I mean giving up 30 whatever points to a team that had 14 players suspended is not very good, and the offensive plays were beig called by a 26 year old. One thing I question is his health, is Ruff going to be able to make through an entire season let alone seasons afte that if he were to remain.
Tech needs to bring in someobdy who will improve the D and has been a proven winner, all while keeping the same offense.
Although I wasnt the biggest fan of Tubbs he can bring Tech to the next level defensively as long as he keeps the spread offense here at Tech. If he goes to the old Auburn SEC offense its not going to work.

The endowment grew by hundreds of millions while he was there. Kent Hance may want to claim some credit for that, but that is pirate gold. Mike Leach was suspended after a 2 day investigation. In fact, almost all of the claims appear now to be blown out of proportion. Player abuse is not tolerated. Mike Leach abused no one, but was badly used by the Tech administration.
Tuberville has been hired as of today. He will bring his own defensive coordinator. Coach Ruffin will be looking for work along with Coach Leach.
Bet that our recruiting class will be affected. I have sworn to offer no financial support to the University while Meyers, Bailey or Hance remain. If Team Leach just fades away, Tech will recover over the next 10-15 years. It will take that long. Guys like me may not make a big difference to Tech. I probably provide $500-$600 each year to the university. I have a son there now, so the number is a little higher. Over the past 15 years, I probably averaged $200 in direct gifts, and that much again in other support. That will stop.
We all have to make that same commitment. My action will not matter. But similar action by 10,000 alums will. No attendance at the Jones or at USA. No licensed products. No membership in alumni organizations. No support to our individual colleges. Our action has to reach beyond the athletic programs and has to threaten to affect academic programs. We need Tuberville insisting to the administration that the Coach Leach debacle be ended, that the case with him be settled fairly, and that administration changes necessary be made to encourage healing so that he even has a chance to repair the damage.
This is not about the failure of Coach Leach to properly discipline a spoiled brat. This is about the failure of the Tech administration to approach the issue with any kind of reasonable perspective. Kent Hance and Guy Bailey failed catastrophically. Gerald Myers’ “little man syndrome” must be retired. All the comenatry the past few days has been about not tolerating coaches who abuse players. We need to make sure at Tech that it is understood that no university community should ever have to tolerate administrators who think that gamesmanship is more important than fundamental fairness.

i have been around coach ruff every summer at football camp and my aunt is best friends with him so i see him alot and i think if tech lets him go they will lose tons of fans and recruits and i think the stupidest thing tech has ever done is let leach go and i think tommy tuberville is the type of coach that will make tech have a losing season. the way coach ruff talks to me at camp makes me feel like he loves me more than anyone in the world he has taught me ton of life lessons and life rules he thinks i should follow, and one of them is abc avoid bad choices and avoid bad company since then i have done better in school and on the football field coach ruff has had an affect on my life for the better and on his players. im am 12 years old, and thank you for reading this.
