In wake of Leach firing, Tech pledge contacted by rival schools
Texas Tech pledge Beau Carpenter, a 6-foot-7, 275-pound offensive tackle from Sulphur Springs, said Oklahoma and Oklahoma State coaches called him the day after Mike Leach was fired.
“I had OSU and OU calling me, saying it’s not too late (to switch) because you haven’t started classes and everything,” Carpenter said Tuesday. “They said we can still work it out and everything.”
Carpenter’s father, Jeff, said Arkansas and Miami (Fla.) coaches also have tried to make late pitches, but Beau Carpenter said he remains solid to Tech. He signed a financial aid agreement with Tech in December, allowing him to enroll at midterm, and he plans to move to Lubbock on Sunday and start classes on Jan. 13.
Carpenter said his only concern is that Tech’s new head coach employs a spread offense similar to Leach’s.
“That’s one of the reasons I committed to the school, because they run the spread so well,” he said. “I would have loved to see Leach stay and everything, but I didn’t commit to him. I committed to the school.”
If he had a choice, Carpenter said he would prefer to see Ruffin McNeill, Tech’s defensive coordinator and interim head coach, named as Leach’s successor.
“He’s a real nice guy and seems like he loves the players and everything,” Carpenter said. “That’s the guy I would want to stay, for sure, and be the head coach.”
Carpenter said he’s been in contact with two other Tech commitments: defensive end Kedrick Dial, his high school teammate at Sulphur Springs, and offensive tackle Denton Simek of Prague, Okla.
“(Dial) said he’s still staying,” Carpenter said. “He said he would like to see coach McNeill stay, but either way, he said he would stay.
“Denton Simek, I had him on Facebook and I said, ‘Are you staying?’ I saw something on (Rivals.com) that said he was reconsidering. He said, ‘Well, it just depends. Are you?’ I said I’m solid either way.”
Another Tech pledge, defensive back Russell Polk of Dallas Carter, told The Avalanche-Journal last week he remains “100 percent” committed to the Red Raiders. Linebacker Fred Harvey of Memphis, Tenn., said the makeup of Tech’s next coaching staff would determine whether he sticks with his commitment, as did the father of Denton Ryan quarterback Scotty Young and the guardian of Lakeland (Fla.) receivers Ben and Javares McRoy.

Mike Leach has a law degree. The contents of any “apology” the administration asked him to sign have not been released, to my knowledge, but I think his refusal to sign was the smartest move he made. Not arrogance, my friends, just plain common sense and foresight, attributes sorely lacking in the TT administration.

Those players who are “united” took the night off vs. a poor Aggy team this year and could have been 10-3 instead of 9-4. So they need to man up and quit being ready to play when they feel like it.
Leach cost Tech the 29-28 loss to UH or Tech would have been 11-2.

I like Ruffin because of his spirit, but I don’t think he is HC material. I would hope that recruits will be come because of the opportunity to be on a team that has a consistent chance of winning the Big 12. I think the adminsitration has killed that chance for at least 2-5 years, no matter who they bring in. In checking Rivals.com, it looks like Riley was more responsible for getting the recruits. I hope that, even thought the adminstration lacks any sense of morals, intrigrity or love for the school, they understand the widespread and lasting damage their self-absorbed interests and arrogance have caused. I can only hope that justice will find them by their firing.
Regardless…Always a Red Raider!

How Leach was set-up by Hance!!
I know this is no suprise but it shows the depth of deceit that this admiinistration will go to for their own personal gain rather than that of the unniversity. Read how Hance set-up Leach to take a fall. Also, why has the AJ not reported on the fact that the affidavits revealed the day of the game(or the day before) had been taken on the 21st a full 10 days before Leach made his statements based on what those same people had told him in contradiction to their sworn affidavit. This should be pretty easy to check since any sworn affidavit must be dated and witnessed.

So regret the reality of the current state of affairs regarding Mike. What a great ride to observe these past many years. He deserves a great shot with another program, especially considering the circumstances that have come to light.
Life isn’t fair, and it is full of nefarious people trying to rip and connive their way to solve their selfish agendas. People are what they do.
Reality Check:
Don’t do like Alabama did and suffer through a gajillion coaches over a ten year period to nowhere before hiring Coach Saban. By the way, the AD and President at UT eventually got the boot after people got fed up. The public pressure never went away after they mishandled the program when Coach Stallings resigned after winning 70 games in 7 years and winning a national championship in ’92. Yeah that’s right, those morons ran him off and Alabama got EXACTLY what it deserved. Remember the name Bob Bockrath…yeah, he came from Texas Tech, so I have read the book. Must be in the TT Admin watercooler. Thought the Tide would never recover.
Bring on UT, and hopefully we can all get a little relief if BAMA can beat their tails.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/andy_staples/02/18/leach/
Here is an excerpt:
Apparently, Myers and company think the program can continue on its current path without Leach. They’re wrong. It’s hard enough to find a coach who can recruit players to Lubbock, Texas. It’s impossible to find another coach who will have SI, 60 Minutes and The New York Times scouring Southwest flight schedules for the least inconvenient path to Lubbock so they can bring the world the story of a well-read, pirate-obsessed former attorney who never played college football but who still managed to devise a mind-bending offense that has befuddled some of college football’s brightest defensive minds.

All you folks think you have it figured out. Tuber or Ruff. Well, you are about to get the surprise of your life. These interviews are cover for the administration. The new coach was interviewed in San Antonio the Friday before the Alamo Bowl game. Much like Bobby Knight was before James Dickey was fired. It was very discrete in order to protect everyone. I suspect he will slip into Lubbock tonight, tomorrow or Friday morning. My guess is the announcement will come on Monday so as to appear there were serious discussions. Let’s put it this way: the administration apparently wants to rid the school of everything Leach, including the air raid. This is a good coach, but Tech will lose its identity. Recruiting will take a huge defensive focus at the expense of offensive skill players. Think of one of the best defensive coaches in the game and you have it. This is a sad time for Tech football. I just can’t believe what is about to happen.

Well, I’ve been quiet for a while and will pipe in now. I know, from my coaching connections, several top recruits will abandon ship if Coach Ruff departs. If we’re lucky, Coach Ruff will take the assistant HC and special teams job. However, I don’t believe he will do so. I believe Tuberville will keep the spread, but change the air raid. He will implement more running game as did Dykes and Briles. We will look like a hybrid cross between Baylor, Arizona and Mizzou. We should know soon!

However, I honestly think that Myers, Bailey and Hance have never understood the value of a football tradition. I give them no credit for bringing in Leach. They never expected him to have the success he had. Leach gets the credit for proving to Raider Nation and the world that the “mad scientist” wasn’t so mad after all.

Good for the players that remain committed. Very respectable. Hopefully, McNeil can stay whoever is hited as head coach. But it takes more than a nice guy to be head coach. I am sick and tired of players leaving Texas for programs outside of Texas, like Zero U. I refer to Texans who play for non Texas programs as Texas traitors, sometimes jokingly, and sometimes very seriously depending on different circumstances.
If you could only recruit players from your own states then I’d love to see how some of these programs like Zero U would do because actually there are enough recruits in Indian Territory (and I’m Indian so I’ll say that if I want to) for Tulsa, Okie State and Zero U.

Reasonable men can disagree.
Lots of people are looking at only one side of issue and seeing only the materials to reinforce their opinion.
To get to the truth you must look at both sides of the issue without bias and seek out only the facts.
In any litigation both sides manipulate the stories to assist their desired goal and ignore facts which help the opposing side.
Take Sowells email. Conspiracy or not?
In reading Sowells emails to Hance was he planning to fire leach at the end of the year? We do not know. Could it appear that way?
Sowells email about firing Leach was written before the new contract was signed, while the contract was still still being negotiated. A 6-foot-7, 275-pound offensive tackle says, “That’s one of the reasons I committed to the school, because they run the spread so well,” he said. “I would have loved to see Leach stay and everything, but I didn’t commit to him. I committed to the school.”
No offense, but unless he is a one or two star 6-foot-7, 275-pound offensive tackle why wuold he want the spread if he is aiming at pro football. It is a great offense because it does not require high quality pro style splits run/ pass blocking tackles. OU, OState, Neb, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miami, most of the Texas teams.

“Believe Ruff has said he would hire an OC and an new DC and only be the HC”
hmmm…I would like to know your source, but if true, I am guessing he could and would promote from within; maybe Sadler as DC and Riley as OC. That would leave an opening for a LB coach, given they continue with their current duties. Any ideas there?

My blog did a debate on this topic yesterday. I thought and still think Leach got hosed. Tell me what you think.

Leach is gone. Let’s move on.

Yes, let’s move on and forget the debacle that the administration put upon the alums and fans. I don’t think so. I don’t care to keep harping about Leach as a coach, but I will not quit speaking about the incompetence of Gerald Myers, etc. He must go. Get a coach hired, and give him the option to retire or be retired.

I’m from PA, the second generation of a 3 generation Penn Sate family, daughter of a sports editor, and a rabid football fan. Next to PSU, I always cheer for Texas football, all your teams, as I feel that the heart of football in this country is in Texas. That being said, I know nothing about your Ruff and his chances for the head coaching position, but he lost my vote when he never even mentioned Leach in his post game interview. A simple acknowledgement, a simple thank-you would have sufficed, would have been the mark of a man of character and dignity. His silence was deafening.

babs, good observation. Ruff should have defended Leach and stood by him, instead of stabbing him in the back. the Tech defense was their weakness – he should have been glad Leach kept him on and didn’t fire him like the last defensive coach!!

@garyount, where did you see the interview of toomy at? I want to see it. Thanks

Tuber will destroy the air raid within three years. He went through three o-coordinators in 10 years and the offense just continued to slide south. One of those o-coordinators went to Louisville and set the field on fire. He commented that Tuber couldn’t keep his hands off the offense and tinkered it unsuccessful. He allowed his QBs very little audible flexibility and two of them were nationally ranked coming out of high school. Yes, he said he would keep the offense and understands the spread. Well, there are many spread offenses, but only one air raid. I assure you he will modify the offense with more running. Dana Holgerson has even modified it at Houston because Sumlin wasn’t comfortable with the wide splits. Stoops told Dykes he wanted a tad more balance than Tech so Dykes modified the scheme. If Tech is serious about Tuber, we are teetering on losing the identity that earned us a national seat.

The regal threesome have decreed that Ruffin is the new coach.
All the rest is show and pomp and dotting the I’s, and checking the boxes.
Tech is an el-cheapo place and will be for a long time.
Myers will really have some fun micro-managing to his heart’s content.

Any guess how many kids will NOT go to Tech now after verbally committing given the Leach fiasco? My guess is Tech will lose every one of the top tier commitments. Who would blame them? Not me..

I would like to know if all of the people who are as upset about this mess as I am, are going to stay angry and continue to let this foolish administration get away with it, or are we all going to continue to let them know we want Myers, Hance, and Bailey fired. Please tell me we are all going to continue to fight and support Leach! I am sure they all think this will just go away. I for one am not willing to do that. Watchdog, I am in Lubbock, born and raised here, and I have only talked to one person who agrees with the firing. Everyone else, different ages, making different amounts of money, rich or poor, support Coach Leach!

No. No no we are the Matadors! The “Red Raiders” came about from a sports writter writing about our red uniforms. If you have a problem with Pirates which the student body liked then you should not like the “Red Raiders” because some outside unassociated person decided to call us by that name.

Sum up if you can’t see…we are the Matadors and go read up on our history if you do not know the facts!

HEY Prof ! Who appointed Hance, who can fire him??????? Not asking the Gov speak to Leachs’ guilt
or innocence, but complete & utter foolishness of TTU Adm handling of this matter. Did you hear Hance’s
prepared statement during half-time of the Alamo Bowl? Were you not embarrassed by same? Did you hear
his remarks, made to espn, played over and over in the days leading up to the bowl game. I can’t quote,
but something to the tune of, GROWIN’ UP IN DIMMITT TEXAS, IF YA SUED YUR BOSS YA PURDY WELL
KNEW YA WERE GONNA’ GET FARRED’ (intentionally misspelled). Good Lord, take out your wrath on the
man at the top, who sounds like the TOP DOG HICK of all time to me. I AM a country hick & damn proud of it.
I grew up in the same county as AW SHUCKS KENT, and I can assure you, we’d just as soon he quit talking
about where he came from. If you’re from the Panhandle/South Plains you’re a hick too, in someones view.
Embrace your inner Hick, it’ll feel good, once you quit “putting on airs”. You’re not fooling anyone but yourself,
anyway. I aspire to be the best hick I can be & encourage you to do the same.
As always I remind everyone,
KENT HANCE IS A SNAKE IN THE GRASS & ALWAYS HAS BEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
