Tech interviews Tuberville, contacts Briles
Texas Tech’s search to replace former football coach Mike Leach heated up on Tuesday.
While former Mississippi and Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was interviewing for the position, Tech athletic director Gerald Myers moved the process along on other fronts. The Avalanche-Journal learned that Tech sought permission Tuesday to talk with Baylor coach Art Briles about the job.
“Gerald Myers did call the (Baylor) athletic director (Ian McCaw),’’ one source said.

Tuberville
Another source also confirmed Tech’s overture and said the ball is in Briles’ court with it being up to him whether to interview. One possible obstacle with Briles is his contract at Baylor, which contains a $4 million buyout.
Briles did not answer calls the A-J made to his cell phone, and his voice mail was full.
One source familiar with the search said former Tulane and Clemson coach Tommy Bowden and Houston coach Kevin Sumlin are “still being looked at’’ as candidates but had not been contacted as of late in the day Tuesday.
Myers did not acknowledge any contact with Baylor, but said, “We’ve still got a little work to do, possibly a couple more interviews, so we’ll just see where that goes.’’
Tuberville had separate meetings with Myers, Tech President Guy Bailey and Chancellor Kent Hance.
“He was good,’’ Myers said. “He’s got a record that he stands on that is good. I thought it went well.’’
Interim head coach Ruffin McNeill interviewed for the position Monday, five days after Tech fired Leach. Tuberville, 55, is the second candidate known to have interviewed.
“His visit was a little different,’’ Myers said. “We showed him the facilities, which, of course, Ruffin is familiar with all that. We just told (Tuberville) that we weren’t ready to make a decision just yet, and so we’d let him know.’’
Bailey and Myers said Monday they hoped to have their next coach nailed down by the end of the week.
“It may be tough to do that,’’ Myers said Tuesday. “It may be tough to reach that timeline, but it could happen.’’
Tuberville arrived on campus Tuesday morning and was taken to fly home immediately after the interview ended around 4:30 p.m. He wasn’t made available for interviews during the day and did not immediately answer his cell phone after the interviews ended.
“I was very impressed,’’ Hance said. “He’s an impressive guy. He’s got a good game plan. I’ve seen two excellent candidates.’’
Hance said he was impressed by how well organized McNeill and Tuberville were and that each was able to give specifics of how they would operate as head coach.
“Being a head coach gives (Tuberville) an advantage, just like Ruffin’s a local guy and he has certain advantages in that regard,’’ Hance said.
Tuberville led Auburn to five Southeastern Conference West Division titles and eight consecutive winning seasons from 2000 through 2007, including a 13-0 record and a No. 2 final ranking in The Associated Press Top 25 in 2004.
Myers said Tuberville is open to the idea of doing things to maintain continuity for the Red Raiders, who haven’t had a losing season since 1992.
“He did say that he would keep this offense intact, that he’d want to continue the offense,’’ Myers said. “He said there would be some things he would do differently on defense, things that he had success with at Auburn on that side of the ball.’’

Leach deserves better than Tech. Until Myers and Hance (and Adam “almost 22 and still can’t take care of myself” James) are gone it doesn’t make sense for the University’s best coach to put up with the fecal matter that’s stinking up the football program.
Good luck to the next coach … whomever it may be.

I am afraid they are going through the motions and will give it to Ruff. Do not get me wrong I like Ruff but I just don’t think he is a head Coach. I want Tuberville. If they are going to fire the winningest Coach in Tech history and a very popular figure on campus then the lest they can do is give us a great replacement – we deserve some one that will take us to the next level and Tuberville will get us there. AD office will take the cheap route on this one – hire Ruff for 2 years and replace him with Briles when Briles’ buy out goes down.

You might not like Myers’ decision, but then you’re not in charge, are you? This is the problem with young people today. They want to make decisions before they’ve paid their dues! Stop calling my university “el cheapo” or any of your other uneducated comments. TT paid Leach a huge amount of money but Leach started to act as if he were in charge of everything that went on. He also began to believe he was a pirate. Enough of the pirate nonsense. Leach needs to gro up, too. No CEO would stand for that from any employee.

A Tuber hire will lose many committed recruits, cost several current staff /coaches and seriously hurt team morale. Tuber will keep the spread, but not the “air raid”. I assure you he will implement more run and reduce the o-line splits, both detrimental to the air raid. he won’t keep Lincoln Riley as o-coordinator. If he can’t get Dykes or Holgerson, then what? DISASTER OFFENSIVELY. Besides, Dykes and Holgerson have also implemented more run and reduced o-line splits. Tech will look more like UT and Mizzou. Be careful what you ask for…………

Not really sure WHY they’re even bothering interviewing anyone else…I still think Ruff is going to get the head coaching job of the Texas Tech Red Raiders but I might be wrong. IMO, winning ‘one’ bowl game doesn’t make a head coach. Ruff McNeill might be ready for the head coach position in several years, but I don’t think he is ready for it just yet. I’m anxious to see how this plays out.
Ruff is a great guy, great motivator, and I appreciate the win in San Antonio, BUT he is definitely NOT a disciplinarian nor presently head coaching material, which is what this Tech team needs. He’s also not the “right” guy for what is desperately required at this point in time. Tuberville may not have won a National Championship, however he does bring the experience to keep Tech (and I hate that I’m admitting this because I hate TU and all the whiny orange bloods out there!) in the No. 3, if not 2 spot in the Big 12 South. Not only that, he’s recruited in Texas and knows what it’s like to battle the likes of LSU, Alabama, Florida, Tennesse, etc.. Understand this Red Raider fandom, that what Leach has done in West Texas is unbelieveable – almost very ‘Gary Patterson Like.’ We’ve moved up the football food chain folks because of him. Now is not the time to have an inexperienced Captain at the helm. Let’s just hope the 3 stooges get it right. GO…FIGHT…WIN!!!

A lot of wishful thinking. We are a tier 3 school. We don’t have the same money as UT or OU. We will still need to pay Leach however many millions they settle on and then what can we afford? I doubt we will be in any position to do a buy out. We will settle for someone desperate or hire Ruffian at a discounted rate.

My “vote” still goes to Briles. He has done a good job at Houston and Baylor w/o top notch recruits same as Leach.
He’s a west Texas born and came from Rule, Texas.
He’s a Tech gut.
Already been a Tech coach.
Pay the money and get him now….our “Air Raid” will stay in tact.
I like Ruff, too, but am afraid he’s already too buddy, buddy with the players and could not be their disciplinarian.
And btw….goodbye Adam James.

So can you actually define 3 tier school and how you rank us in that catagory? There are lots of colleges that have more money. So what? Leach was paid hansomly for what he did and didn’t accomplish. But if we are so bad, then how come there are so many coaches wanting this position? There is not very many schools that can say that they are not stressed about the economy and how it effects them. Sure money is a factor in this instance. That is why I DON’T think we land Tubby. He had a bigger salary at Auburn then Leach did at Tech. He would cost more than Leach and that just ain’t going to happen. Plus I’m not sure what he would bring to the table if the Stooges make a it a requirement to keep the offense and defense the same. I think he can recruit which is important. But Ruff is getting better at that.

a lot of good comments here around the coach selection. i can’t say i’d mind having tubberville on board; auburn was a stout program under his direction, save the last year. i think sumlin would be a good choice as well; the guy is sharp. no way to i want ruff as the coach, he’s not the guy.
the situation with leach reminds me of that dave chappelle skit called “keeping it real”. leach kept it real alright and refused to play the game. i wish we still had leach and i think he was in the right but sometimes it doesn’t make a shi* whether you’re right, you’ve got to find a way to get along. he should have asked himself whether he wanted to be right or be the coach of Texas Tech. he chose to be right. maybe the three stooges we’re impossible to please, damm if i know.

Leach to Oakland. Well…they are Raiders, they wear black, they have suspect administration and very uneducated fans. Sounds like the job he just came from. However, the new Raider job has a total bust at QB and (with pro LBs who are faster that RBs) that system has no prayer of success. (What’s that buzzer? Is that the end of Leach’s 15 minutes of fame?)

Why are we not considering the Head Coach from Boise State??? He has lost 1 game in the last two years and the best he will ever do in that crappy conference is #2. He runs a wide open offense and actually play defence. Would have to throw Leach like money at him I’m sure but it would be worth it.

Thank you, Honest, for proving my point. You don’t have a clue! The only people making fun of Texas Tech are the people commenting on this site (and maybe the Dallas Morning News, but that newspaper is in serious trouble, anyway). Texas Tech has an outstanding reputation around the world. I know that from personal experience. Mike Leach was becoming a joke. Listen to the people who are saying that Mike Leach never won the Big XII South let alone a national championship. If schools such as Boise State and TCU can go undefeated then Texas Tech can, too, and it all starts with just the right coach. Mike Leach wasn’t it. Tuberville has coached an undefeated team.

He is not a head coach, yet anyway. Let him get started at a middle of the road school (that’s not us anymore if we don’t regress). K, you asked what defines a tier 3 school.
This is based on the amount of state money our school receives for programs and research. It has a domino effect. More programs equals more recruits, more students, more parent supporters, more alumni, greater fan base, and in turn more revenue for our football program.
Yes, Leach was paid handsomely but I believe we were making a stretch to do so. The defensive coordinator for UT makes double what Leach was making. They can afford him plus Mack Brown. Unfortunately our tier 3 status prevents us from having big name coaches. I am just pointing out that by the time we pay leach a settlement. We will not have the money to buy out contracts and then afford a big name coach. It will have to be someone that will take similar or less to what we paid Leach. I hope I am wrong. It would be great if we can afford to buy out Briles’ contract, pay Leach off and still be able to attract a big name coach.

Lubbock, Tex.—Texas Tech starts to interview candidates for the head coach position, and Team Leach is on the high seas of the South Plains. Armed with flags, eye patches, double Ts, and protest signs, these students have scheduled another stand-in:
The TEAM LEACH “Reach for Leach” rally will take place on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. at Memorial Circle!
School will be back in, so this will be huge! Bring your signs, cameras, your voice, come out in pirate attire, and be ready to make some noise!
Celebrate what Coach Leach did for us, and give him the send off he deserves! Be civil, respectful, and be positive!
http://teamleach.org redirects to this event if you want to share the link with friends!
As stated on their Facebook page, Team Leach has almost reached 54,000 members. This could fill the Tech Jones Stadium, and this is about 20,000 more members than there are students enrolled.
These students demand for their voices to be heard.
But I have some advice for Team Leach, and here it is.
Tech is getting a new coach, regardless if you like it or not. (My vote is Tuberville: War Eagle!)
Team Leach needs to start pushing for a change in how the Tech administration treats the student.
Get involved with Student Government and petition the university; demand that the administration should start listening to the student voice.
Think about it. Change has happened over much less circumstances.

Greetings from the state of Alabama! I am a lifelong Auburn fan and was curious to see what you guys thought about the possibility of Tommy Tuberville getting the HC job. I, for one, was sad to see him go — although Chizik and his staff seem to be doing a decent job so far. Tuberville would be a great hire for Tech. I truly believe that had the morons in power at Auburn not tried to immasculate Tuberville in ‘03, he would still be at AU. Even with the undefeated season in ‘04, that ‘end around’ that the Board of Trustees tried really left a bad taste in Tub’s mouth. He seemed to lose the passion for the job after that….can’t really blame him. Good luck in your coaching search. Hope you get whomever you want!

Well, there are some things that are pretty obvious (my favorite word). The current administration is desperate to hire a new coach in hopes of calming down the Red Raider Nation. The administration underestimated the effect of firing Leach, and the administration fails to understand that until Hance, Bailey, and Meyers are gone, it won’t make an iota of difference who is picked. It will not quell the anger until the three stooges to be gone.
Everyone should ask: What is the rush to hire a new coach? Football season is over. When does Spring training start? Well, not January or February, etc, etc. More smoke and mirrors…….
If you are a perspective coach hire, how do you put in the contract, I might consider taking the job if Gerald Meyers is not my boss? Only someone desperate for the job would leave that out of the contract.
So to all prospective coaches, I would say, simply hold back on your decision until a few folks get thrown under the bus.

Tuberville would be a great hire. You guys should get him. Leach got hosed I would have never fired Leach.
If you want a win at all costs guy who cares nothing but about winning Tubbs is not your guy. If you want a guy who will win the right way, be a class act, good guy, reunite the Tech family, graduate players, stay clear of the NCAA, compete with OU and Texas you hire this man. I will tell you he may not be a complete air raid you may see a little more balance on o but I am not sure that is a bad thing. At one point at Auburn he as like 8 or 9-3 in his last eleven against top ten teams in American. Quick name the only SEC school to beat Tebow twice??? That would be AU and Tubbs.
Also I know the knock against Leach in some circles was he did not really care to do the whole alumni circuit. Tubbs will. He is a very approachable guy. Hell I drove him around Birmingham at SEC media days one year myself. If you want a jerk and a–hole like Saban he is not that.
Frankly if I was an Auburn administrator I would have never had the brass to fire this guy and this is from an Auburn Alum.

Man, lot of negativity on this board. Everybody wants to talk about how cheap Tech is and how average we will always be with the current administration. Are you kidding me. We were lucky more than 10 years ago to get into the Big 12. We could’ve been TCU who while playing in a BCS bowl game and having a better record than Tech the last few years still can’t turn a profit in their Athletic Department. Tech has quadrupled it’s revenue and spending since entering the Big 12 in order to build a program that fans, students, and alumni could be proud of. While we may not be able to spend the dollars on a coach that the likes of TX, OK can, our administration has done a great job of creating a program that we can be proud of. I think expecting a little bit of loyalty when you’re putting 90% of your football revenue back into the program from your coach and fans shouldn’t be too much to ask. I, like most, didn’t like the way that it shook down, but I’m sure we’d all like a redo on how we’ve handled situations in our life. Bagging on Tech, any coaching candidates, or worst of all canceling your season tickets isn’t doing anything to help anybody that’s a part of Raider Nation. Lets show everybody online that we know how to rally behind the Double T instead of outsiders seeing a group that considers themselves second rate. That’s just weak.

Hyperbole? I think not! If he managed to stay a few more years and get his degree, would you hire him? Not a chance and neither would anyone else. Daddy calling and showing up at the job wanting to know why Adam didn’t get a raise or promotion. How dare you give him a bad review? Daddy James is going to the president of the company to have you dealt with expeditiously.

Good call DP. I didn’t like the way everything went down but my loyalty is to Tech. I have already sent my thoughts on the hiring to the Admin., I will wait to see how they handle this. Leach was a great coach for Tech to this point but we may be at a crossroad now. Do we go up, sideways, or down? To me anything less than up is down. This is a good time to be a RR and I would like to keep it that way. It is nice when I travel and I do not have to explain what Texas Tech is. It used to be that way.

Let’s see,
TT who has experience as a head coach and skins on the wall from the SEC and will retain the spread offense vs
Briles who has an 8-16 record in our own conference AND has a $4 million buyout vs
McNeil who seems like a great guy and solid recruiter and would retain most of the staff but has no HC experience.
TT looks to me like the hands down, common sense choice with McNeil a close second. Based on that I fully expect Briles to be hired even with the $4 buyout though we can’t find the money to finish the inside of the East side building. The BOR at it’s finest.
Of the candidates interviewed, I’d hire Tuberville, but only if he keeps the Air Raid offense the way that it is. Tuberville, a defensive coach, may not want to keep McNeil. I’d like to see McNeil stay as Defensive coordinator and implements the things that Tuberville thinks will work.
Everyone who thinks Pirates are great to look up to or to invoke are not seeing things right. Priates are criminals who do things like steal, rape and murder etc.
And to respond to another comment, no it was not wreckless for Texas Tech to fire Leach according to my understanding on the firing because Leach broke rules and laws.
Adam James was a patient with a concussion. He was to be in view of the other players to practice whatever his doctor allowed.
If he were my patient, I would not have stood for him being treated the way he was according to my understanding on the entire matter.

I just saw some of the previous comments from our Auburn friends and I like what I hear. Thanks for your input. Again I have nothing against Ruff, and would be good with Briles. But Tubbs, he may just be exactly what we need at this point. We play Texas the third game next season, and open with TCU on the road in 2011. We better have a good coach that knows the job he is in for fast and can get the recruits we need in the future. Coaching is important, but without the recruits you end up with…..well you end up with a 6-6 big ten team that lost 14 players and puts up 31 points on your defense.

Isn’t it odd that Myers and Hance are commenting on the candidates and the process during the process? Why the sudden openness in the HC search, a matter which is traditionally kept secret at most D1 schools for competitive reasons and out respect to the candidates? You often get the rumors from the media as to who is interviewing where, but you rarely hear of the AD and other officials confirming actual candidates, making comments after each interview and discussing plans for other candidates. Makes me think that Ruff is the man, the rest is just for show to appease the students, disgruntled alums and fans. The comments are so many this is not likely to be seen, but here goes.
Leach did a lot of good things, but he really rode the coat-tails. The Lady Raiders first put us in the national spotlight with their national championship. I said then that egos being what they are, other sports–especially football–would benefit by trying to match. Then came Bob Knight, and he gave us added exposure.
Leach was not a head coach when he came here either. He was ‘in the right place at the right time’ and benefited greatly from the others with some good (not GREAT) effort on his part.
We will survive, and let’s look to ‘bigger & better’ things to come.

Interesting how the Bowden brothers continue show up when Tech is looking for a coach. Terry apparently wanted the job when Spike was fired, and now Tommy is applying for the job. Seems Tommy was fired by Clemson for failing to win the SEC title after 10 seasons. He’s probably being given a courtesy interview.
If Tech is going to stay in the family with Ruff then they better move quickly or risk a raid on coaches and recruits by Leach or some other school like Baylor or Houston. That may happen anyway. Briles carries the cost of a hefty (and hypocritical) buyout but he is a known quantity who would bring some promise of stability. Sumlin is the dark horse and the most interesting of the applicants. If a raid on the staff is imminent then Tuberville has the advantage. If not, then he might balk if the Three Stooges pull a Jerry Jones and try to make him keep the current staff.
Most here seem to think Leach was canned because of money. If that is the case how will they justify paying a $4 million buyout to get the Baylor coach? Also I can’t see Tuberville really being satisfied with a job on the west Texas plains. Yes, I know he wants it now…… but he would bolt in a nanosecond to get back into the SEC.
And back to Leach…. If he hadn’t put Adam in the slammer (aka, the shed) he would be concentrating on Tx Tech recruiting at this very minute.

What laws were broken? How much more pain was sissy boy subjected to by being in an enclosed place? (For the last time, It was not locked.) Pirates are criminal, but how many times does hollywood glorify famous outlaws and our guilty pleasures of being them is revealed? Mike simply liked pirates. Also the treatment of wussie boy i admit was weird, but, he was not hurt. The offense that Coach Leach started might be carried on but, let me ask you this, Would you rather have the painting of the Mona Lisa or a print? The print has very little value. Yet everybody is entitled to their own opinion no matter how dumb it is. This search for a replacement is being made in such a haste that the stooges think that the Mike Leach thing will go away. Well, its not going away. The cries of “fire gerald” are still as loud as ever and i personally will walk him out of town. I remain committed to going back to being a Miami Hurricane fan like i was before i was a tech fan, 30 years ago, until the day i see gerald meyers die or fired. Either one will be satisfactory. And to badams, your mention of coattails is out of line, Mike Leach brought the football team to the heights that it is with the help of his staff. If your logic is correct, then we could have put bobby or marsha as head football coach and win until we puke from too much of a good thing. I hope that tech wallows in mediocrity for a very long time, and lastly, i hope that Coach Leach receives a substantial settlement and does become coach of the Oakland Raiders. The problem in all this is the timing. There is not time for an adequate search, proper interviewing, or anything else. I had previously tought the job was Ruffin’s, but yesterday I heard Briles was in Lubbock the day after Leach was fired. I’m not too sure about Briles, I don’t like the running that the quarterback does in his offense. One thing that made Tech tough to face under Leach is that noone else did it quite the same. I don’t think Tubberville was a serious interview. Just cover for an unprepared administration. It’s Ruffin or Briles. I’m leaning towards Ruffin. Keeping the recruits we have will go a long way towards a successful clas next year. We have slowly built our way up from clases filled with two star recruits and a few three stars to one mixed with three and four and last time I looked not a single two star recruit. Those top players pay attention to that. If you’ve got top talent ahead of you, and are likely to have top talent coming behind you, it’s an easier sell. While those rankings aren’t everything, I’d rather be closer to the top than the bottom.

That’s rather misleading don’t you think? He took over a Houston program that was a doormat and in five yrs took em to 3 bowls and a conference USA championship!! He recruited the starters on the UH team this year that BEAT us like it or not.
At Baylor they were expecting first bowl team in years until starting QB was injured for season. Didn’t you notice a 2nd class Baylor team (as he inherited) well he took them and defeated Missouri in Missouri this yr. Plus he gave us fits these both yrs we played em and with a 2nd class team almost defeated us last yr!! He had the 4 Tx State high school championships at Stephenville and is a highly respected recruiter. Also was president of the Tx Hi School coaches group and that aint easy to attain politically. Looks like he will be the last to interview and hopefully there’s a reason why……… :)

I am a Red Raider “homer” just like most of you on this blog, however I’m also a realist. Art Briles of course sounds like a good choice, ex-grad, productive @ Stephenville HS & U.of H., coached with Leach and also is rebuilding a poor Baylor program. What you’re not taking into consideration is how much more experienced Tommy Tuberville is and everything he brings to the table. The SEC, and many of you will argue with me on this, is still the strongest NCAA football conference in the nation. The fact that he was able to stay competitive there for so long speaks volumes. If you want Tech to continue to stay on the “uptick” as they say, and to remain competitive in the Big 12, he currently is by far the most qualifed and best candidate for this job. Period.
P.S. Go Tide and proove what a big fraud TU is!!!

AMEN to TTU86—I agree with everything that you wrote. Here is one double alum whose family has been going to TTU since the 1920s. I’m more offended by the lack of transparency and the good ole’ boy dealings in this matter. The conspiracy to fire Leach started almost a year before the James “incident” and smacks of collusion between rich boosters and the Administrators. Hance was hired because he is a politician–not because he is a genius or has a great legal mind. Texas Tech board chairman Rick Francis stated when Hance was appointed that:: “The regents believed Hance could further the goals that we had for our chancellor, in terms of energizing our alumni, and those legislators in both Austin and Washington, D.C., and provide the vision that we need for the future.”
Well, it seems that what Hance has brought is a maelstrom of bad publicity for the university. He has supported an out of control AD who is fueled by his own sense of grandeur and ego. This university is becoming less and less a “public’ institution but a playground for the good ole’ boys to let their friends come and make a buck. We have Alberto Gonzales making one hundred thousand dollars a year to teach ONE political science course? Most tenured professors who have published several books do not make that kind of money at Texas Tech. Gerald Myers hires his good friend, Bobby Knight, whose son then becomes the coach in waiting, and now they all are supporting Ruffian McNeil? Texas Tech should be a meritocracy where ability and experience are the standards NOT who you know and who you are beholding to.

I spent eight years at Tech in the 80s, and I love my alma mater. I’m a huge fan of Tech sports, and I believe Mike Leach is an amazing, pioneering coach who brought the football program to a higher level than I ever thought we’d reach. I also agree with those who think the TTU administration handled this situation badly.
But I’m an old guy, and I haven’t been to Lubbock in a while, so I have a bit of a different take than a lot of others on this site.
First, for those of you talking down your own school because they fired the coach… what are you thinking? Sure, disagree with the decision if you want, but calling your school third tier and all that… seems pretty counterproductive. I agree that the Leach firing has created a mess, but I’m not going to slag my own school because of it. Like it or not, these people represent you, so making them out to be a bunch of idiots (which just isn’t true, even if you dislike them and their decisions) makes me wonder why you even attend Tech.
Second, hiring Ruffin McNeil would be sort of like hiring Spike Dykes again. I was at TTU when Spike was coach, and I love the guy. He’s just as sincere and devoted and cool as he seems when you hear him speak. I have nothing but respect for him as a man. But he was never going to coach Tech to the level they’ve reached now. I have similar feelings about McNeil. Awesome guy who has done an excellent job with the defense. I great representative of the school who we ALL can admire. But if you want to keep the program moving forward, you need a bigger fish (whose vision meshes with the current approach)—and someone with a proven record as head coach.
Third, Mike Leach got too big for his britches, as they say. Great coach, incredible service to TTU. Thanks forever. But we ALL have a boss, no matter how many television appearances we do, and even if we’re the highest paid person on campus. That’s real life. A lot of people believe the administration didn’t want to pay the money and was simply looking for a reason to fire Coach Leach. That’s an easy solution to reach, assuming you think the administration are a bunch of morons. But you don’t get to that position by being an idiot. Mistakes were made, certainly. Bad approach to a difficult situation, sure. But it seems to me that if Leach had a little less ego and a little more willingness to compromise and listen to his bosses, he would still be coach. I love his unorthodox style and will always be grateful for what he did for the Tech program, but no one is bigger than the school.
Fourth, are you a Texas Tech fan or a Mike Leach disciple? It’s easy to be a fan of the Pirate. All swagger and weirdness. I certainly was. He’s cool. But he’s gone. Quite honestly, he wanted to be gone sooner. He chased every decent coaching opportunity every offseason, and there’s no guarantee that he wouldn’t have been talking to every school in need of a head coach this year, either. So while you’re slamming your school, remember, Mike Leach had wandering eye and always placed his own interests first. Nothing wrong with that, but quit making him a martyr.
Fifth, do those who now want to slag TTU and the football program think the players suddenly have lost their talent and will to win? Do you respect those guys so little that you want to predict their imminent doom and relegation to irrelevance? Do you think they suddenly are going to turn into a bunch of third-rate players? Really? Are you that eager to give up? Not me. I think Tech needs to hire the right coach, and if they do, the team can be as good as ever. This surely isn’t the end of the world. Be mad if you want, but support your team. This is YOUR university, and Mike Leach is no longer part of it. A new coach will be named and Tech will play football next fall. I suspect they will do quite well for themselves, especially if Sheffield is the starter. Crap happens. Deal with it. Stop whining. Move on.
Finally, I saw Eric Dickerson and Craig James play at Jones Stadium as highly paid running backs with SMU. Regardless of what Leach may or may not have done to Adam James, there’s no question that the James family legacy is one of privilege and cheating. But you still have to move on.
Be cool. Go Raiders.

2007 season: WINNING SEASON
2008 season: LOSING SEASON
2009 season: LOSING SEASON
So, when I add up the losses its 4 losses and 2 wins. Even if you consider 2005 season a tie, still 2 winning seaons. Also, this coach is yet to win a bowl game in his career! He does not inspire much confidence at least as I see it.

Tommy Tuberville was on our local (Birmingham, AL) sports talk radio station this a.m. He’s been a regular all year giving his weekly insight into the big games. His primary reason for being on the air today was to break down the Nat’l Championship game. But, of course, talk turned to his Tech interview. There is a podcast of his conversation on http://www.wjox690.com/ . Nothing mindblowing or new to report, but thought you guys might like to hear it anyway.

It will be Briles. I like Ruff but he is not head coach material. Since the three stooges have already made overtures to Briles, it will be him.
Anyone heard any more news about Kadron Boone?

I am glad everyone is finally seeing Jim Sowell for what he is. However, you also need to know that past regents John Scovell and Allen White were just as involved in the Leach firing along with the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the current BOR.

Southern Billionaire:
You sound pretty good at twisting numbers to make look better for your cause. Did you learn that from the locals at Washington DC or just get creative? I guess you’re just another one of the “negatives” that keep puking on our site. Fact of the matter is Briles took over two “doormat” programs at the time. He definitely turned UH around making them respectabe again, winning a Conference championship, and making a bunch of MONEY for the UH athletic dept. And the team in which HE had recruited the starters managed to beat our Raiders this yr. And, his second class Baylor teams gave us fits. He has not yet had time to totally turn em around cause it is the Big 12, but he is going in the right direction: ie. he beat Missouri on the road this yr!!!
So go figure the numbers. Maybe you are the kinda guy that says when there’s two minutes left in the game and we’re down by 8 it is over. But me and coach Briles are the type that looks our buddies in the eye and says we’re winning this stinkin’ game right here right now.
And that is what we are doing here at Raiderland. We may be down but we are certainly not out and we are gonna now win this stinkin’ game! Like it or not!!!

I’m glad you brought up Allen White OKRAIDER. This is the guy that gave us the Plains Capital Bowl (dead, and is now the Armed Forces Bowl) in Fort Worth. At the press conference announcing this bowl, which had lower level conference tie-ins (Big 12 and whatever TCU was at the time) he almost wet himself with how exciting it would be for Tech vs. TCU to play in this bowl. Thanks for having a vision of mediocrity. What a twit. And those dumb PNB commercials “Let’s ride!” What a waste of good leather on his BOR chair. I love Lubbock and TTU and only hope they do the next best thing because they have undone the right thing.

Tech deserves what we get if the people in Lubbock are stupid enough to pass on a chance to match a top defense with our Air Raid offense.
The same naysayers will be crying and moaning next year when aggie hangs 52 again on Ruffin’s D.

Leach’s contract, http://lubbockonline.com/pdfs/leach122909.pdf , Termination clause on page 13 states he should have been given 10 days notice.

Thanks 2 Cents. With all of the finger pointing I think everyone should know it all started with the “dallas mafia” and their desire for power. They really don’t care about Tech. It is all about power and always has been. Thay finally got their way and look what it has cost us. Little men.

THX SALLY, for posting the link for Rick Perrys’ offc. I had been meaning to look that up for a few days,
you made it easy for me to request that the Gov have Tx Atty Gen investigate or appt Govs comission. The
comment section was very limited. Condense your message to the bare bones before you log on. I
had 3 handwritten pages before I logged on. I’ve always heard brevity is the soul of wit.
You guys who are arguing the money angle, read London Raider@ DoubleTnation.org, very good, heavily
researched short article. Lots of numbers, had to read it 3 or 4 times, conclusion, TTU COULD afford
Leachs’ latest contract. As always I remind you;

I think we saw mediocrity sail out on his pirate ship on Wed. Dec. 30th. I guess were happy with being the number three in the Big 12 South, not too mention Mike and his fat little girlfriend not preparing are players for the butt whooping we took by the SCRUBS in Collegestation. Mike gave us a 11-1 season (getting embarrassed by Oklahoma on national TV), we gave him a contract that he fought hard for and we get an 8-4 season. Why are we still talking about this GUY, the offensive football genius that couldn’t take us to a National Championship! Roll out the red carpet for Tommy Tuberville, Fire Gerald Myers, and Mike have fun trying to teach DeMarcus Russell your offense.

Gary that’s no illegal if ESPN wants to do that. They are not on the public airwaves. They are cable franchise. If it was on ABC you might have a little something to bark on.

Actually, Turner Gill at Kansas is the first minority coach in the Big 12.

Briles was very innovative at Stephenville. Took a long time for other schools to catch up to what he was doing. That was then, this is now. I don’t like the running the QB does, and I don’t like the teams that run up to the line of scrimmage and then look over for the coach to call the play. Go with Ruffin, keep the recruits, and keep building on what we have going.

Briles will be named the next HC.

You may be right about that red and black. Does anyone have any more info yet about who may be the next head coach?

All of you people who are favoring Ruffin may want to go to bleacher report and do your homework on Tuberville. This guy has Great head Coach written all over him. He may be coaching at A&M in a couple of seasons if he is not here. see “Texas Tech interviewing Tommy Tuberville to replace Mike Leach”.

Looks like Ruffin going to get by default.
Could not work a deal out with Briles. Two things one buy out of 4 million plus and second they wanted him to keep Ruffin. For pete sake don’t they know that any new coach is going to want to put his own team together. What would Bobby Knight have said if he was told “we want you as HC but you need to have this person as an assistant” ……you know what the General would have said! They now fumbling the hiring.

THEY knew there was a 4 million dollar buy out on BRILES……if that was a problem , why did they bother to interview BRILES.
Going through the motions. Ruff by default …Ruff Coaches 1 – 2 years then they go back to BRILES. Cheap way out.
UNBELIEVABLE from start to finish more fumbles then the team had in the last ten years.

TAKE THE TIME TO LISTEN TO THE TOMMY TUBERVILE INTERVIEW ONTV THAT WAS CONDUCTED ON A STATION IN MEMPHIS, HE DOESNT WAIST ANYTIME STICKING A KNIFE IN COACH RUFF OR SAYING WHAT HE WIILL DO, WONDER HOW THAT WILL FLY WITH THE MEDIA AND THE TECH PLAYERS OR THE RECRUITS AND THE MAN HASNT EVEN BEEN HIRED YET.. HILARIOUS..
I didn’t listen to the interview but if he was just talking about making changes to the defense then I am happy. We just gave up 31 points to a 6-6 big ten team minus 14 players. We need someone in here that can recruit for and implement a defense.

Defensive recruits are catching up to the offense, headed in the right direction. Ruffin is the man. No sense in waiting. Time is of the essence. Let those recruiters know their status so they can lock up this great clas.

Techex what are you talking about? Does 40 sacks even make a dent in your post?

I think that even if Art Briles is interviewed and if he takes the job (if Tech can afford him), they should give Ruffin a big raise and keep him as DC and lead recruiter. I do not know Art Briles, but Ruffin seems like the kind of coach that is easy to like and easy to listen to, and he is who the players want right now. Ruff can do the job, give him a chance and some $$$ to retain his asst. coaches and hire some good replacements where needed.

The Knights want Ruffin – (that would help the basketball program get more bucks and perks and stature).
Football would be de-emphasized due to poor attendance and losing.
Myers wants everything dragged down to build Basketball up.

it still doesnt matter who they hire as a head coach, the problem is still the upper level administration. People will be singing zip-a-dee-doo-dah out their bunghole when they are gone. Trust me.

Still think Craig James would be the best HC. Look at the way he talks to the media.
Adam would be a natural as strength & conditioning with his drive.
Daddy Craig could bring in Eric Dickerson for fundraising.
Who else do you think would fit in with this group?
