Tuberville, Bowden add outsiders angle to Tech search

Texas Tech’s hunt to replace Mike Leach could include two Tommys, both of whom have a resume item that’s hard to come by: an undefeated season.

Tommy Tuberville, who guided Auburn to a 13-0 campaign in 2004, and Tommy Bowden, who led Tulane to a 12-0 record in 1998, are on Tech’s list of four to five candidates to replace Leach.

Tuberville will get an interview with Tech on Wednesday, Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said. Tuberville declined to comment Monday, but he told The Avalanche-Journal on Sunday he’d keep the wide-open Leach offense in place.

“He expressed some interest in the job, and we talked and we’re going to talk to him,’’ Myers said. “That’s about all I can comment on.’’

It’s unknown whether Tech will offer the job before the search process winds around to Bowden, who is another of the four or five candidates under consideration.

“There has been some talk about him,’’ Myers said, “but we have not made contact with him. I’m not saying we won’t, but we haven’t at this point.’’

Bowden could not immediately be reached for comment.

The two Tommys have more than perfect seasons in common. Both are 55, and each’s last job ended badly in 2008 after a decade-long tenure. Tuberville was forced out at Auburn in December 2008 after going 5-7, his first losing season since 1999 and his second in 14 years as a head coach.

Bowden was forced out at Clemson in October 2008 in the middle of his 10th year. He’s never had a losing season in 11 years as a college head coach, going 18-4 at Tulane (1997 through 1998) and 72-45 at Clemson (1999 through 2008).

Bowden’s brother, Terry, interviewed for the Tech job 10 years ago before withdrawing from consideration. He’s now head coach at North Alabama. Myers said Terry Bowden is not a candidate this time around. Both are sons of Bobby Bowden, the former Florida State coach who just presided over his last game on Friday.

Baylor coach Art Briles, in a statement released Friday by his school, said he is happy at Baylor. Nevertheless, Briles remains on Tech’s list.

When asked Monday if he had been contacted by Tech or anyone representing Tech, Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw said, “We don’t comment on those types of questions.”

“Coach Briles said he’s committed to staying at Baylor,” McCaw added, “and I take him at his word.”

Briles’ statement said he is “committed” to the Bears, but did not indicate whether he would consider an offer from another school.
Briles is a Tech graduate and former Leach assistant at Tech from 2000-02.

A spokesman for SMU said in an e-mail Monday that athletic director Steve Orsini “has not been contacted by anyone at Tech” in regards to Mustangs coach June Jones, who released a statement through the university.

“Coming off our best season in 25 years and our win in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, I can tell you that I am fully committed to SMU,” Jones said. “I recently accepted a contract extension and am looking forward to continuing to rebuild this program.”

Over the hill? Get serious! Look at Bobby Knight! That was a brilliant move on Tech’s part. We were on ESPN every night, and people paid attention. As much as I like McNeill, he’s just not high profile enough. Tuberville or Bowden would fit the bill. The sports world knows them, and they’re not all washed up. With either one, Tech would still be on the map. These commentds must be coming from someone who’s either just out of high school or a freshman or a sophomore. Mike Leach, as much as he did for TT, was starting to get weird – and this pirate business was starting to get old – very old.

All things considered, Tuberville is the best option, as long as he keeps his word and utilizes Leach’s offense with someone who knows it. Briles would be ok as well, considering this may be his dream job, but I don’t like the idea of stealing a coach from within our own division. Rest of them, including Bowden and McNeill, don’t excite me. Really wish we weren’t in this situation to begin with.

Gary Patterson…he’d keep up recruiting, be able to contend with UT, OU, and OSU, and he’s one of the best college football coaches in Texas right now. I don’t like the Leach firing, but even he knows that his tenure at Tech is over. He’ll probably never get the chance to play in a national championship game because of the weak conference. If he had the same season here that he had at TCU this year, then Tech would be in the title game! TCU had THE BEST OFFENSE in the FBS this year! And their defence is very good too. I think we need to keep Ruffin as the DC, but I don’t know if he’d be able to beat UT or OU as the head coach. What does everyone else think?

Come on Gerald!!! Keep working on Briles and the alums. We don’t want what just might be on sale. We want quality! I’m tired of getting beat in Austin. Ya gotta beat both the horns and the refs. Get Briles and we can take it to em. Spike went 5-5 against UT in the 90’s. He built his teams back then around balanced offense with good passing , but mainly a defense with SPEED! Briles has geared that up 3 or 4 generations in the last decade! Look at Houston. Shoot – they beat us like it or not so……. And have you seen the 4 star D backs committed to BU this yr? Whoa!!! Heard of a QB named Robt Griffin!?

Many times coaches want to be the last one to make the last pitch to a kid who is teetering because he usually goes with the last one. It amazes me how little our fans know about D1 coaches outside of Texas. I am devastated about losing Mike Leach, but no one in Raiderland gets excited about a coach with the pedigree of Tommy Tuberville whom is interested in taking “OUR” university to the next level? He left the University of Auburn in 2008, he wasn’t fired. He left because of an incident with the Board of Regents… sound familiar??? He only coached in on of the premier conferences in the entire nation, the Southeastern Conference. In the ten years he coached at Auburn his teams won the west division “FIVE TIMES”!!!!!

How many times have we won the south division in the Big 12? Once, and we shared it with Oklahoma and Texas. His 2004 team went undefeated and was ranked #2 in the Nation at the end of the season, not for one week. He beat Auburn’s arch rival Alabama six straight season, not every other year at home.

He was tutored by the great Jimmy Johnson at the University of Miami and has recruiting ties in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and Houston.

People are telling him he is crazy for interviewing at Tech because it is not a high enough profile job for him. In other words he can do better than us. The statement was made on ESPN radio on Galloway and company in Dallas/Fort Worth.

Nobody wants to play for Tommy Tuberville. I am a SEC fan and student and the general feeling is Tuberville is a joke. Only reason he had a good run at Auburn was the level of talent that the school attracted.. even in the shadow of Bama. When he was at Ole Miss his record was average at best. Ole Miss could not attract the recruits that Auburn could. Put him in Lubbock and well…you get the idea.

Yes, recruits come to Auburn because its a competitive school. Historically, the Southeast produces some of the best football players year after year. Talent wise, the SEC is the best conference in the country. Of course I am very biased and I’m sure many people would disagree with me. Tuberville had a average record at Ole Miss and goes to Auburn and has a good run. I attribute this to a bigger name school attracting better recruits. I just don’t think he could have success at a school like Tech. BTW, I am a Tech fan and fan of Mike Leach. I respect people who are different and think outside the box.
With all the more talented recruits going to other schools in Texas I feel Tuberville would struggle. Mike Leach is famous for doing a whole lot with nothing. Yes they are 25th in recruiting this year , but it took him awhile to accomplish this. Tuberville is not known for being an offensive mastermind. He’s your average run of the mill college coach. I have no doubt he is a decent coach but I just don’t think he has what it takes to succeed at Tech.

    Pa Bear,

You’re spot on. Job is Ruff’s. All else is cover for the AD.

For those anti-Ruff fans, he did improve Tech’s defense in the two short years he had it. He did it with kids recruited by the previous coordinator. He didi it with a depleted secondary, unexpected player losses and numerous injuries. The facts speak for themselves. When he ws the sepcial teams coach, Tech had some of the best special teams in the Big 12. Does anyone remember Wes Welker? Our punt return stats were excellent during his time as special teams coach. Our kicking game was also very good. When he became the d-coordinator, special teams play fell off a bit.

Hire Rocky Long as the new d-coordinator. His philosophy is speed on the corners (DEs, OLBs & CBs) with power in the middle (DTs, MLB & SS). TCU’s defense is what it is because of speed. Coach Long also loves to blitz and blitz much from many different looks. Just as Leach believes in ball distribution on offense, Long believes in blitz distribution on defense.

I agree with you, Joe. If Myers were serious he would have published the names and there would be a transparent process. Before late yesterday evening Myers had said that he wasn’t going to divulge the names of the candidates. Why? Because there weren’t any. This is a done deal, it will be Ruffian. He wants a coach that can ride Leach’s coattails without paying the money. Of course there will be unattainable incentives that make iit look like Ruffian could have competitive salary wise on par with the Big 12.

After NUMEROUS terrible hire by Myers, he will finish his disastrous tenure at TTU with a terrible pick for coach. Art Briles is really the best choice from what is out there. The rush to “grab” a coach to save the recruits is short-term. We need someone who can continue and build on Leach’s success, but who also has a proven record as a head coach AND who can recruit.

Russ has shown that he is capable of improving one of the bottom five defenses in the entire Division 1 football. Yet, a severely depleted Michigan State football team still hung 31 points on us before a crowd that was 80% TTU fans. This does not look like great improvment or preparation to me. Ruffian managed this game on cruise control with Lincoln Riley doing the hard stuff….getting us enough points to win the game. RILEY has cajones and that’s a fact. He did not kiss baby James’ butt, he never put an ARM around him and hugged the little bugger, and he PUT in Sheffield and allowed him to ignite the offense in the last five minutes so that we won the Bowl.

GET US A REAL HEAD COACH. If Myers doesn’t at least do what’s right on this score, he should be railroaded out of town just like he did Mike Leach.

You would think that if he could hire Bobby Knight that he would be able to get along with anyone but
then again, maybe that’s why Bob retired like he did, own his own terms!!!!!(no one else would hire him)
    D) Tech will not be able to afford anyone after the lawsuit.

Ruffin, will be the choice, (but he is not Head Coach Material, but tech has to save face)
if not he will be out of there,
There would be a lot of teams interested in getting him as a DC.
Which I hope will happen! He deserves better!!!

No more defending Tech where I live until Meyers is gone!

    Mike,

Provide examples of player’s coaches who didn’t win. Be specific and not just one bell curve flyer, but several coaches. Also, give us Webster’s definition of a player’s coach.

Do you need me to explain a bell curve? Probably so after reading the idiotic statement above. Did you ever play football above Pop Warner level? Can you even throw a football? Do you know what a football is?

Ridiculous comments as such should be subject to removal!

Head Coach: Kevin Sumlin – Former OU assistant (Tech did pretty well with the last one), knows how to beat OSU in Stillwater (Leach couldn’t quite figure that out) – If he can recruit/win at Houston, he can sure as heck recruit/win at Tech.

Offensive Coordinator: Dana Holgorsen – knows Tech spread offense; knows Tech players – recruited several.

Keep Ruff as DC, and most of current staff.

“Why would Briles come to Lubbock?”

Because he graduated from Tech and it is a terrific school.. Because he has MANY friends here. Because it is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Because it has given major universities “fits” over the years winning against them – some consistently. Because he is smart and realizes he could jump from a 500 hp race car into an 850 hp car and have FUN! ! competing with the big boys like he was meant to do. Because we asked……

    Red Raider 76,

I didn’t ask Briles to come to Lubbock, I mean why did he leave in the first place? More money?
Not hard to leave the friends behind when money is not to good, or was it because of Leach?
And he was nice enough to say he was not interested in it!

How Come We Never Get Any Alumni to come back and Coach?

Don’t you think that there is a reason for that?
Is it that are Alumni are not capable?
Or did they find it greener on the other side?

MAYBE THEY Know what they would have to put up with if they did come back, Meyers.
He is the one thing that has been consisted at Tech, (not beating major universities, which ones aTm and who else?
If you mean consisted on beating a major university every year than I would agree with you, but we have not been consisted on beating the same major teams year in except the Aggies, except this year.

I was just giving you the True reasons he would not come back to Lubbock.
Lubbock is a great place to raise a family, and Tech is a Great School!! I do agree with that.
    We also have Great Alumni!!
But we need to get Meyers out of there! He has had his time and he has done some good things for Tech, but
    he’s reached the end.

Wait until you pink raiders see QB Gilbert. He’s had an incredible year learning from McCoy. He’s been phenominal in practice. The Big 12 South won’t know what hit them next year. I can’t wait to defend our Natioanl Championship!!!!

How about we take Major Applewhite from UT. We keep the same style of Offense and gain a coach that knows UT inside and out so he will know how to beat them. Also, he will be able coach Tech to beat OU and OSU. He will maiantain the stat of high graduation rates because he coached at Rice. He also coached under Nick Saban at Alabama so he knows the SEC teams too.

Whoever the next Head Coach is I hope we can continue our winning Seasons and improvements.

Always and forever — Texas Tech !!! — Go Red Raiders!!!

Major Applewhite has no where to move up in the UT football program.

    Mack already has his replacement.
The UT administration has already promised that Will Muschamp gets the Head Coach position when Mack Brown retires or moves on as AD for UT.
They announced that at the end of the 2008 Season.
Will Muschamp is currently the Coach Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers and UT already has Greg Davis as their Offensive Coordinator.

Texas Tech has the rare opportunity to replace an excellent coach, who brought our program to national prominence, with a candidate with an even more accomplished, stronger resume, Tommy Tuberville.

During his 10 years at Auburn, he led them to 5 SEC West Division championships, 1 SEC Conference Championship, 2 second place finishes, and 1 third place. With the exception of his first and last years at Auburn, the Tigers finished with a winning conference record the other 8 years, followed by trips to 8 bowls, including the Sugar Bowl, The Capital One Bowl, and the Cotton Bowl. His bowl record at Auburn was 5-3, including 5 of the last 6 bowls.

The unanimous view around the country is that, if Texas Tech wants to take that next step as a serious national football power, it must hire a coach of this caliber (and how often is one available?). Otherwise, we will stay where we are (or regress), fighting A&M, Ok. St., even Nebraska, as the leader of the 2nd tier in the Big 12. Tuberville has proven himself in the toughest conference in America, in a state where most attention goes to Alabama, against perennial national championship candidates like Florida, Alabama and LSU.

Ruffin McNeil is a fine person and worthy of consideration. Under most circumstances, he would probably be the best choice to lead the Red Raiders. However, a chance to grab a coach with the pedigree of Tommy Tuberville doesn’t present itself very often. We have NEVER had a candidate like this ask for the job. We cannot afford to pass up this opportunity without recognizing the consequences. Not only will we miss the opportunity of a lifetime, but Mr. Tuberville may be visiting Lubbock in a few years as head coach of the Aggies!
