McNeill discusses job, impresses Tech president
Ruffin McNeill apparently aced his first discussions with Texas Tech officials about the football head-coaching job, and former Mississippi and Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville could be next on the interview list.

The Avalanche-Journal learned Monday that Tech’s short list includes four to five candidates: McNeill, Tuberville, Baylor coach Art Briles, former Clemson coach Tommy Bowden and possibly Houston coach Kevin Sumlin.
Tech President Guy Bailey and Athletic Director Gerald Myers said Monday they’d like to have a choice by the end of the week.
McNeill, the Red Raiders’ interim head coach, met for about 2 1/2 hours Monday with Bailey, Myers and Tech Chancellor Kent Hance, though not all at the same time, Myers said.
“First of all, I think he is a terrific guy,” Bailey said. “I love him, and I think he is a great coach. I think a lot of the success that has come to this program the last two or three years is because of what he did as defensive coordinator. The big difference in last year and this year and earlier years is really the defense, and Ruffin is really responsible for that.
“He is a guy that is fully committed to the program and the student-athlete, and he’s a student/family focused guy, and we think he’s terrific. He did a great job, he’s a phenomenal man, and I have the utmost respect for him.”

McNeill said his on-campus meeting lasted from 8:30 a.m. to around 11 a.m.
“We’ve known each other, but it was a good chance for them to know me a little bit better,” McNeill said. “I thought it went well. I’ve said it before: They’ve got to do what’s in the best interests of Texas Tech. I’d be honored to be the next coach here at Texas Tech.”
Bailey came to Tech 1 1/2 years ago, so while he said he knew McNeill “pretty well,” the two had never had extended football conversations.
“It was a chance for us to sit and talk football, his football philosophy, how he’d do things, how he’d run and organize things,” Bailey said.
On Sunday, Myers said the meeting would be informal with the purpose being for Bailey and McNeill to get better acquainted. Now he said there might not need to be the additional interview he had mentioned Sunday.
“I would say he had a thorough interview with everybody and spent quite a bit of time with everybody,” Myers said.
Tech is in the process of identifying a replacement for 10-year coach Mike Leach, who was fired Wednesday for what the university said was insubordination and a lack of cooperation toward resolving a complaint of improper treatment of a player.
McNeill, an original member of Leach’s staff, was named interim head coach last Monday and led the Red Raiders to a 41-31 victory against Michigan State at the Alamo Bowl on Saturday in San Antonio.
Bailey and Myers said for the first time Monday that they’d like to wrap up the search by the end of the week.
“If possible, that would be ideal,” Myers said.
After Saturday’s game, Tech players Baron Batch, Brandon Carter, Brandon Sharpe and Jamar Wall said they think it will be best for the program if McNeill is named the permanent head coach.
Tech players have said the 51-year-old defensive coordinator is popular with them.
Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio also gave McNeill an endorsement. Though he didn’t call McNeill by name, he said coaches’ relationships with players and continuity are important to winning.
Myers and Bailey both said the players aren’t the decision makers, but their opinions are valued. Bailey compared it to faculty meeting with job candidates if Tech were hiring a dean of a college.
“We want their voice heard,” Bailey said of Tech players. “Our team handled this situation in a phenomenal way. They did a lot better than any of the rest of us did. We’re real proud of them. We have a lot of great leaders there. We wanted to make sure their voice was heard.”
Bailey said Myers has the hiring choice. At that point, the new coach will be recommended to Bailey, who will take it to Hance and the Board of Regents.
“While the decision is Gerald’s,” Bailey said, “and I will either affirm it or not affirm it, by the same token, I want our chancellor and Board of Regents to have a comfort level with the decision. It’s more important than ever for us to be unified and fully supportive.”
After his sitdown on Monday, McNeill tried to briefly escape the whirlwind of the past eight days. He went home to spend time with his wife, Erlene, and his daughter, Olivia, who is a sophomore at Appalachian State, where McNeill coached from 1989-91 and 1993-96.
“Olivia leaves to go to college tomorrow,” McNeill said. “I won’t see her again until summer.”
In the meantime, McNeill also hasn’t had time to check much of his correspondence the last few days. He said he had about 160 text messages to go through.
“I think that’s all my phone could hold,” he said. “And there’s about 60 or 70 e-mails. I haven’t had a chance to open them yet.”

I’ll tell you why, Raider P. Because it would be ridiculous. We need a coach who can take us to the next level (if one is available). It’s not McNeill. He is a great guy and a great recruiter. Also a good DC who gets along well with the players. That doesn’t mean he is head coach material.
Tuberville is the best of all the names out there. He’s shown he can win in a tough conference over a 10-year period. And surprise, surprise! Tech hasn’t even contacted him.

I’m not sure the administration’s motives are right, but I think Ruffin is the best opportunity to continue the momentum we have going. Every head coach, no matter how smart or charismatic, was inexperienced when they got their first head coaching job. I also know experience is not a substitute for ability. If it was, Gerald Myers would be quality AD.
I had a friend who was the head coach at a Texas high school, his first head coaching job. At the annual sports banquet he got up and thanked the superintendant for giving him his first head job. True story.

Tuberville is a great guy and Coach. He did wonders for Auburn and is great at recruiting. A very good mentor for young men. It is a National name and I have no doubt he would take us to the next level. I hope that the powers at be are truly doing a National Search and not playing games. My real fear is they will settle, take Ruff (will give him a cheap contract which is not fair to him) and in a couple of years they will make another move for someone they really want now but can not get. Someone that has a big buy out now but in 2 years will not. They can give Ruff a 5 or 10 year contract but after what has happen it will not be worth anything. They have demonstrated how they value contracts with Leach.

Is Ruffs health good enough to take on a head coach job and to stress of Myers et al?

Ride Raider Ride, you are so correct. Hiring McNeill without conducting a true search would be compounding the mistake of firing Leach by having the wrong person come in behind him. Again, McNeill has many attributes and is a fine person, but it does not make him a head coach.

Pres Bailey and Chance Hance will likely hire whomever Gerald selects. We don’t want to offend Ruff, but since he has never had to deal with the head job stress of a D-1 school, man……I dunno. I’d want to pass that responsibility around too. His salary of $330,000 for a DC is pretty nice and not near as much stress as the HC job would bring. Plus the top teams normally seem to have a HC that has been an OC. Not always, but in college the offensive background seems to work better for the HC at this level.
No further word out of Waco is deafening!!!!!! Briles ain’t said anything – just been rather evasive in two sentences. Their paper ain’t said one thing cause they know we are “talking” and they are scared of losing coach Briles. They’ll get over it. Personally I think Coach Briles will come from what I’m hearing if we get the buy out done. He wants to come HOME! So come on Gerald . Find the buyout money with the alums and put this puppy to bed so we can save those recruits!!!!!

Coming home isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be, just ask Dennis Franchione. Not sold on Briles as a college coach. This isn’t Stephenville, and OU isn’t Brownwood. I don’t think you can judge him by the Baylor experience. They were in such a whole. Houston has done even better since he left, which you take as a positive or negative. He’s really an unknown quantity as well. I just can’t see running off one coach for largely financial reasons, and they buying out another for several million dollars — unless the booster calling the shots is willing to write the check for it.

McNeill and Riley will keep the bus rolling for awhile. Riley can drive it and McNeill can maintain it a bit, but it will become outdated and fall apart without the architect Leach.
The players love McNeill for the same reason students love a substitute teacher (hint: it’s not because they learn more).
Why do you think McNeill is not head coaching material? Why do you think we have to have someone with HC experience? Our last 3 coaches did not have HC experience on the college level when they were hired, and all were successful. Of course, the two before that did not have HC experience on the college level when they were hired and were disasters. I think McNeill has been around long enough to manage a team. He needs to hire a good OC and maybe a DC, but I think those are doable. If he is not the one, then I hope we can get Briles. McNeill or Briles, both would stay for a long time and would get along with the administration and players and fans very well. And both can recruit.

Don’t forget, Tech still has to factor in the money they are going to pay Leach. If we bought out Briles, we would essentially be paying three head coaches. Leach, Briles, and Briles’ replacement at Baylor. Wouldn’t it be a hoot if that was Leach. We pay Leach a settlement, then we pay Baylor to pay Leach. Longshot, but very ironic if it happened.

Houston’s success is due to the 5 yr program Briles built including 3 bowl trips and a Conf USA champ. Most all 99% of the starters were recruited by Briles. Remember the qb kid named Kevin Cobb (spelling ??) He is doing great in the NFL now. UH was a doormat when he took it over.
Money?? Really the buyout is no big deal for our athletic dept andor alums . The big deal is hiring the right guy with the right stuff cause it is the admin’s job to manage those type of hires. They are responsible and will make hopefully a good decision for Raiderland!

The story has been updated a little if you haven’t checked it in a while. Bailey says Ruff was phenomenal. Gives him credit for success last couple of years. I felt like the decision had already been made when I heard Bailey talking about the players’ opinions. I think he’s as good a choice as anyone else. He will be under a tremendous amount of pressure. An early season win over UT could help ease a lot of bad feelings, but a couple of early losses will increase the discontent greatly. It’s not really fair to the next coach, but that’s the atmosphere he will be stepping into, and doing so willingly. Good luck.

I wouldn’t call this season a break-out season for Tech and I did not think Saturday’s game was a real defensive show for Tech either. Who knows if he can coach with the big boys? History always repeats itself, please don’t do this to us again. Memo to Hance and Bailey; do not try to put this money saving move on Myer’s because everyone knows he can’t tie his shoe laces. This is on you. If you do not form a real search committee and look at proven HC performers you better do it with your job and legacy on the line. I am not a large money donor but I am a consistent one and I will not pay for tickets or donate anymore money if you do not take this serious.

Let’s get a few things straight. The Board of Regents can’t fire the janitor at Tech, they don’t have the authority. The BOR are in place for policies and hiring/firing the Chancellor. Certain BOR members can influence the AD but ultimately it’s the job of the AD to fire the head coach. The AD reports to the President who reports to the Chancellor who reports to the BOR. The President and Chancellor will back up the decision of the AD. Sources are leaking out Sowell (former BOR chair) and Scovell influenced or offered protection to Myers to pull the trigger.

No one has answered my question yet. Why do you think McNeill would not make a good HC? Yes, Dockery and Moore were disasters, but Leach had no HC experience either when we hired him. No one was sure he would work out when he came. McNeill’s defense has improved each year since he was named the DC. The last 3 years, Tech has won at least 9 games, all since he was named DC. What exactly is it that you believe disqualifies him to be a successful HC? I doubt you can name anything specifically.

Hire Ruff and go get Dana Holgerson from Houston for OC. Forget Briles…do we really want to go to Baylor for a head coach?

Let me be clear, I am not disparaging McNeil or his possible HC ability. We got lucky with Leach at a time when we could not get a top coaching prospect. We were in that position because of previous bad decisions relating to money and probably (like now) ego. But now, thanks to what Leach has done we are in a position to interview some proven performers. We had this chance once before and blew it. That doesn’t gaurantee anything but it keeps us on the national map as a contender. The current players of course want Ruff, he represents not having any change. But I am concerned about future recruits. Good coaching is one thing, great players are another. I would not consider Mack Brown a great coach but he is a great recruiter. I am asking for a legitimate search committee. Tech has earned it, don’t blow it.

Very funny and smart Watchdog113!!! They just had a thorough investigation and now the Defensive Coordinator has a meeting to meet the Dean? So what they are saying is they didn’t need to talk to the DC about the James situation during the investigation? Obviously the Dean is just going on what the AD told him happened. Also it really reaks that the medical staff changed their statements the day of the game even though they still admitted that nothing done would have endangered James. In fact James was safer in the “shed” than on the field as he could have been accidently hit by a thrown ball or another player. Plus James said he shouldn’t have his eyes exposed to the sun.
I am also tired of everyone saying James was “locked in a electrical closet”. He was never “locked” in any room especially the electrical closet and the “Medical staff” choose where he was not the coach. At least that was “one” of “sworn” statement by the medical aid.

Gerald is treating the hiring of the next head coach as if this is a DIII football program. Leach has made TTU a top notch program and therefore the program deserves a nation wide coach for the best possible coach so that TTU can maintain there status as one of the top programs in the country. If they hire Ruffin, it will be a decision made with the heart because he is a nice guy and maybe he has a place at TTU, just not as a head coach. What does he bring offensively? West Virginia did this very thing a couple of years ago and hired Stewart because the players liked him and he won a bowl game, but he does not have the ability to keep WVU a top program. Coaching a major college program is not a popularity contest, but maybe Gerald wants someone he doesn’t have to pay a good salary – you get what you pay for.

Gary Patterson…I’d be all for it; but he ain’t available. Not saying there’s not better choices than Ruff…just saying not any available. Boise State coach would be good fit. Let’s face it Ruff’s going to get the chance to keep the “system” pointed in a positive direction. These other bozos mentioned don’t have what it takes to keep the “system” going. If Ruff can’t take it to the next level in a couple years, time to blow up the “system” and head another direction.

Question 1. Can any of the existing coaching staff be considered since they were aware of and did not report the accused wrongful actions? If wrongful actions did exist fear, loyality or monetary loss are not excuses for allowing wrongful acts- doing so is a dereliction of duty. Does the rules allow for an employee under disciplinary action to get promoted.
Question2. Is Craig James in a business relationship with a member or members of TT boosters club or administration?
Question3. Is it a retalitatory act to fire a person who is seeking judicial remedies to a suspension?
Question4. If the action in three is not retalitatory then why not continue with the suspension rather than a firing while the investigation continues?
Question 5. Is filing a legal challenge to an employment action insubordination?
Question 6. Do you think the faculity and staff of TT will want to know the answer to question 5?

Thanks……. but if you remember when Spike had arrived we had had a line of disastrous coaches and a couple of even worse AD’s. It was Spikes goal to stop the bleeding and he did. Wasn’t perfect but he was very respectful and got us to the next level which only Leach broke Spikes winning record. Numbers mean alot. Best thing about Spike was he was born and bred West Tx and wasn’t really interested in leaving until retiring. He stayed and did what was requested and expected. After he maxed out we went to the next level and now, ta-da!, hopefully we will continue to that next level. But when in Lubbock or Lincoln or Boston it does help to have your coach bein a local type native so you know he likes it already. Otherwise you might find a pirate who shops you every chance he gets (and in the papers to boot!).

Ideally, I’d like us to go out and get a proven D-1 head coach. Unfortunately, if that happens, the whole staff is usually replaced, which is not what the program needs right now. Unless you can go out and get a Tuberville or Briles and NOT replace the staff, I think you’ve got to go w/ Ruff, get a good OC (Holgerson from Houston?) and a DC and see what happens in the next couple of years….if it goes south, then you’ve got to blow it up and start over….
It’s definitely a gamble to go w Ruff, but it’s the only way we’ll keep any of the top recruits from this year (some have already rescended) and keep any sense of continuity with the team.

I totally agree with Raider Ride and Willie B. I’m sure Ruff is a great guy, but we need a coach to be innovative to take us to the next level. Tubberville would be totally awesome to have. He is proven and probably should have a national championship if it wasn’t for OU getting in instead of Auburn in spite OU losing in the Big XII championship game. He could really take our D to the next level and might get a bit of a running game going as well. Unfortunately, our cheap administration will go for Ruff to save a buck or two. I highly doubt our admin will pay what is required for a Tubberville or a Bowden. We will go back to being a mediocre team hoping to make it to a bowl game after a few years. It really is going to look embarrassing on national t.v. when we have this newly expanded stadium that is more than half empty at majority of our home games. I believe that scenario will come true if a thorough interview process is not done and we just “settle” on someone that is cheap. Classic example of the Peter principle with Ruff.

I like Tubberville the best; he ran helped run defenses for Miami from ’86-94 (they won 3 natl titles during this time). He was the head DC @ Atm in their ’94 season when they went 10-0-1.
If he’s smart, he’ll keep Riley & the other line coaches and we structure a deal to keep him here at least 5 years on the first contract; if he does well, we secure another 5 & then see where it goes.
I love Ruff but when the camera would pan to help on the sideline during the game & he had that glazed look on his face, especially when the O was on the field, it wasn’t good. Coupled with the fact that we had to score 41 to beat a 6-6 Big 10 team, another thing against him in his Saturday night job interview.
I wish him luck and hope he gets a shot but we need a HC with HC coaching experience.

I bet they can find a good 4A or 5A coach that has won or come close to winning district somewhere that they could get real cheap. After all, it IS about the money. Read the emails between kent hance, gerald meyers, jim sowell and company. They tell it all. They admit it is about the money.
Nevermind that Mike Leach guided this team to a point where the stands were full all the time, they were on television all the time because they were exciting to watch. Doesn’t that bring in money?
The “powers that be” didn’t want to pay Leach a comparable salary anywhere in the same vicinity as the other big 12 coaches. He was still one of the lowest paid big 12 coaches around. Jim Sowell was upset that he hadn’t won a national champeenship. He pointed to the fact that Mack Brown and Bob Stoops had won and won two of them. But, as someone said earlier, coaching at Auburn, OU, UT and other schools that have long standing traditions and are usually the schools where they simply “reload” the blue chip athletes and plug another batch of top recruits in and go again.
Heck, Mack Brown’s headsets probably are not even plugged in. He just claps after every play and nods his head. No offense to UT or the coach but that’s not far from the truth.
Mike Leach was definitely smarter than the people he worked for, aka Gerald, Kent & possibly Guy. Apparently, they didn’t like it that he was extremely popular albeit a bit quirky. He definitely raised the bar to another level. I’m not sure if Ruffin can fill those shoes even though the players like him as everyone says. However, how’s it going to be when he becomes the HC and the players don’t respond well when he tells them to do something and get more out of themselves than what they are giving? What will they say then? What will they say when he has to reprimand them as Leach had to do in certain instances when they either have negative attitude as Craig James’s daughter did? What will they think when he suspends a kid for tearing up the locker room after a loss?
HC’s have to do what’s best for the entire team and not always be a buddy. The HC has to be responsible for the team performance and sometimes that means making unpopular decisions.
I think that most of you who have said that Ruff will be the next Head coach are right. He’ll be cheap. He’ll do what they say. He’ll lick their hand when they rub his ear, as Randy Gallaway said of Jimmy Johnson’s replacement who was sitting at home on the couch when Jerry Jones called. What was that guy’s name? Barry Swtizer??? We saw what happened to Dallas with someone else running Jimmy Johnson’s team. Dallas did fairly well the next year and won but started down, down, down for a few years.
We all hate to see that happen to TTU. But, we shall soon see. I hope that Jim Sowell is happy. what a stooge.

I like Ruffin as much as the next guy, but lets really look at what he has done. Granted, the Tech D is better now then in recent memory, but lets look at the stats:
Out of all 120 FBS schools:
Pass Defense – Tech is 73rd giving up 225.6 yards per game (5th in the Big 12)
Rush Defense – Tech is 38th giving up 126.8 yards per game (7th in the Big 12)
Total Yards – Tech is 49th giving up 352.4 yards per game (6th in the Big 12)
Points Allowed – Tech is 42nd giving up 22.5 points per game (6th in the Big 12)
He is a “player’s coach” and all of them love him… but i do not know if he has what it takes to move this team forward… our defense is improved but is still only better then half of the teams in our conference, and those were the teams we were beating when we did not have a defense.
Just a thought…

Ruffin will be the next Texas Tech Red Raider head coach.
The whole Mike Leach mess has been about $$$$$.
The previous coaches Tech has hired to be head coach were not previous head coaches, the reason it would cost them mucho $$$$$.
If they bring in Briles, or anyone of the others on the list they better be willing to take less $$$$$.
They can make Ruffin the head coach and it will at least save them at least a 1/4 of what they are going to pay Leach when he is done with Tech.

1. Meyers is not the problem with this issue. He was only doing what he was told. Before this season began, he told Admin that he will be retiring next June so those of you that hate him will not have to wait long for his departure.
2. Leach was not fired for his treatment of Adam James. Technically, he was fired for refusing to sign a letter of apology to James and for also refusing to sign a reprimand admitting to wrong doing. Less than technically, he was fired for telling Hance to go F himself when told to sign the two documents.
3. I have mixed emotions about Ruff. He is a good man, a good recruiter and a good motivator. However, our defense has been the weak link and is responsible for most of our losses since Ruff became defensive coordinator (as was Setencich’s D before him). We easily scored enough points to beat Houston and A&M and should not have to outscore the other teams offense to win games. Once we get a consistently good defense to go with the offense, we’ll really have something. That said, the defense has continually improved under Ruff and if he is head coach he will bring in a defensive coordinator (rumors have it that he has made contact with someone with NFL experience to lead the defense) and he will bring back Holgerson as OC. Maybe it will work out with Ruff, but we are stupid if we do not conduct a national search and spend the money to get to the next level.
4. Apparently some folks are withholding money from the Alumni Association in protest of Mike’s firing. Please don’t do that. The Alumni Association is not part of the problem. If you are going to withhold funds from Tech in protect, please target the groups responsible and/or related to the issue (RRC, Athletics, etc). A better choice would be to divert funds from the other groups to the Alumni Association (I am not in any way affiliated with the AA – I just think it’s unfair to hit them and their small staff with this issue).
5. It’s all about the benjamins! Let Tech know how you feel.

He is my choice since we ran off mike……no one will fire myers since he is retiring soon. So we can just scream all we won’t but no will allpw us to fire him in a booster group, they got his back. Last thing to say is why does no one say anything about the windmill farm james and our chancellor are in together. That is why mike was canned so quick, james went straight to him to complain after adam called home to cry to daddy. Mike screwed up but could not swallow his ego enough to admit he did anything wrong so as we know, his ego and geralds came to a head and no one would give in. Okay… I’ll be serious for a second. It makes no difference who we hire as a coach. The Tech program will not move forward with current leadership in the AD’s office. It will also not move forward because our administration has a Jerry Jones complex. They all want to be the BIG MAN of Texas Tech. There is no way they will allow any successful coach to remain in Lubbock, Texas. One way or another they will drive out all who dare to make become more popular than they are or be paid more than they are. There is the simple truth. Meyer’s needs to go, Bailey needs to either stay out of it or go, Hance needs to be put back in the hole he crawled out of. Has anyone reported on the business connection between Craig James and Kent Hance? Just asking… now back to… “Night of the Living Shed”.

It amazes me how little our fans know about D1 coaches outside of Texas. I am devastated about losing Mike Leach, but no one in Raiderland gets excited about a coach with the pedigree of Tommy Tuberville, whom is interested in taking “OUR” football program to the next level? He left the University of Auburn in 2008, he wasn’t fired. He left because of an incident with the Board of Regents… sound familiar??? He only coached in one of the premier conferences in the entire nation, the Southeastern Conference. In the ten years he coached at Auburn his record was 85 -40 and his teams won the west division “FIVE TIMES”!!!!!
How many times have we won the south division in the Big 12? Once, and we shared it with Oklahoma and Texas. His 2004 team went undefeated and was ranked #2 in the Nation at the end of the season, not for one week. He beat Auburn’s arch rival Alabama six straight season, not every other year at home.
He was tutored by the great Jimmy Johnson at the University of Miami and has recruiting ties in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and Houston.
People are telling him he is crazy for interviewing at Tech because it is not a high enough profile job for him. The statement was made on ESPN radio on Galloway and company in Dallas/Fort Worth.
PLEASE GERALD MYERS AND MR. HANCE, YOU ALREADY SCREWED US OUT OF OUR COACH. DO THE RIGHT THING AND BRING IN A HIGH PROFILE COACH WHO CAN TRULY TAKE US TO THE NEXT LEVEL… COACH TUBERVILLE!!!!

Bailey seems to have a Robert McNamara or Jerry Jones approach to management, i.e., to micromanage. He says the decision will be Gerald’s, but if so, why does he need to talk football with Ruff? What is Bailey’s football background? Has he ever been a coach? A head coach? A coordinator? A player? Will he want the players to vote on who quarterbacks the team? On what plays to run? Does he take votes on matters for which he is directly responsible? Why did he only consider Hance’s vote on Leach’s contract terms?
Ruffin is not the best choice here but is the smartest. He will be the cheapest, most liked by the players and able to hold on to most of our recruits. However, he talks about is body of work. He has been d-cooridnator for only a short time and I go to everygame and find the defense is hardly worth watching they are so bad. Yeah we have players with nice stats like Sharpe, but fact is we couldn’t hardly even slow down not to mention stop MSU except for intercepting 2 terrible floating passes. Ruffin had a full 4 weeks to get his defense ready and they were completely taken apart. How is he supposed to ready offense, defense and special teams from week to week if he can’t do 1 of 3 in 4 weeks.
PS when he was special teams cooridnator all of Tech nation closed their eyes during field goals, kick and punt returns. So overall he is a decent coach, a great guy, but not head coach material. At least not at this point.
There is a role for Ruff within the football program, but it is not head coach. Our program is situated for a very solid 2010 season, but it will be another 2008 if the program is left on cruise control. The current staff is not deep enough nor experienced enough to elevate the system and schemes for another season. Do not mistake an Alamo victory as validation of the staff’s competence; we beat a 6-6 team that was missing MANY key players by 10 points. These boards are filled with people applauding Leach’s many accomplishments for our program, yet those same people are now calling for a coach that will sacrifice those accomplishments. If the current staff is left to man the ship, we will follow a good 2010 season with successive years of mediocrity. Someone along the lines of Tuberville (or some other bona fide program builder) is the only choice to avoid a plateau and continue our ascension in the national spotlight. A failure to recognize and appreciate this difference is a guaranteed trip to the bottom quartile of the Big XII.

This is all about money. Jim Sowell said so. They were looking for a reason to get rid of Mike Leach. I’m surprised at how many have turned on the winningest coach in TTU’s history, the coach who produced the highest graduation rate in the country, bar none, for his athletes, filled the stadium more than any other coach, raised the recruiting level by increasing the drawing power at TTU, etcetera.
We’ll see how Ruff will be loved when he has to discipline some of the kids. The only kids speaking out against Mike Leach are the ones who he had to discipline or did not start. i.e….adam james, chris whatsisname that ESPN kept quoting and Brandon.
Don’t get me wrong. I think Ruff is a great guy. I doubt he’s got what it takes to take us to the next level. But, he would definitely be cheaper. Jim Sowell will like that. He will tell Hance, Meyers and Baily to hire him.

To all who want mike leach back. He is gone and bringing him back will not help. Melbourne Football Club sacked their premiership winning coach back in 1965 the year after he won them a premiership. He was reinstated later that week. They have never won a premiership in the AFL since. The coaches name was Norm Smith he coached Melbourne to 6 premierships. After a successful coach is sacked and re hird they lose their magic.
Texas Tech NEED to hire the best coach they can who will look after the programs best interests.

Tubs would be a great coach at Tech. Rumor is that family matters affected his performance the last year or so at Auburn. He is a players coach. Don’t forget he did win a NC at Miami as Jimmy Johnson’s DC back in the 80′s. My wife went to Tech and I went to Auburn. The personalitities of the schools are very similar, interstate rivals are similar (Alabama is hated by us as much as A&M and the Horns are by Tech).

Are you guys kidding me. Being a great guy does not make you a great head coach. Please, please, please do not hire Ruffin as the head coach. We just put this thing together. We need to build for the future, not regress to mediocrity!! If we hire Ruffin we can all feel really good about ourselves for about half a year and then when the wheels come off and we are back to square one within two years, then what? We start over with bottom 50 recruits and an empty stadium and it takes us until 2020 to get us back to where Leach had us? Nothing is fail proof, but lets get a figure head like Tuberville with great coordinators (maybe even Ruffin) under him and take this thing to the top!

I don’t understand the love affair with Ruff with regard to being a HC. He seems like a great guy. But he is 51, didn’t get a coordinator position untill 2yrs ago (and only after the DC was fired mid season). There is a reason he hasn’t risen through the ranks. Most great coaches become coordinators early in there careers and become HC by mid 40s or so. How many great coaches have a resume as thin as Ruffs? How many were promoted to HC at 51 with only 2 yrs as a coordinator?

Lemmings. Too many “Hire Ruff lemmings” on this thread. HoustonRaider, you are 100% correct.
If we hire Ruff, his first task should be improving the defense and hiring a better Defensive Coordinator. So why again are we hiring Ruff? Do we think he put together the offense that looked so impressive against the Spartans? No, he coached the defense that yielded 400 yards to a depleted Big 10 offense.
Ruffin is a good coach, good for the program. He still needs development.

It seems to me that a lot of the members of “Team Leach” should identify themselves more as members of a “Leach Mob”. They want to tar and feather (or worse) Adam James, the chancellor, president, Board of Regents, and gee, why not throw in another few 19 and 20 year old players who might dare give an unfavorable opinion of Mike Leach.
Having graduated from Texas Tech, it was my understanding at the time that I was attending an educational institution. I expected the administrators to devote most of their time to matters involving improving the quality of the education I was receiving and that future generations will receive. I now find out that the only thing that should matter to the administration is whether our football team has Mike Leach as its head coach. If he’s not, maybe the entire administration needs to be taken out on the darkest night and chained for three hours to the back end of Will Roger’s horse.
Although I don’t personally think that Ruffin has the credentials to be a head coach of a football team of Tech’s standing, some of the comments being made about him for seeking the job are downright offensive and make me want to throw up. He owes his loyalty to Texas Tech; not to Mike Leach. I believe the same is true of the fans.
Mike, you did a great job these past 10 years. I was shocked and saddened upon hearing of your dismissal. But you were hired to coach the football team; not to run the university. Further efforts on your part the ruin the university will greatly diminish your magnificent legacy.

The Hance, Meyers, and Bailey crowd need to decide how a team is to molded and guided with no rules or discipline.
We’ll have a nice, family team that enjoys playing, but not a winning team that will fill the stadium.
A winning team needs rules and a coach that is allowed to enforce them without being micro-managed into ineffectiveness.

Not everyone who is criticizing the administration is a Leach junkie. I liked Leach, but I’m not looking for a bridge to jump off of or anything. However, I am disgusted with the administration which took a Mickey Mouse incident and turned it into a nation-wide incident that made Tech look foolish. That’s the sort of thing that won’t soon be forgotten. The timing could not have been worse, and none of it had to happen if not for a knee jerk reaction from the administration. It was simply unneccessary and the people responsible for mishandling the situation need to be held accountable, starting with the Director of Athletics.

Obviously, you can tell that I am an OU fan from my name. I wish we had been able to keep Mike Leach at OU for a few more years, but it’s apparent that he was ready to be a head coach. Texas Tech’s administrators will regret the day that they got rid of Mike Leach. He, no offense intended to Spike Dykes, put Texas Tech on the national football map. He made Tech a destination desirable for some very gifted players who wanted to be a part of his “system”. The way in which Leach was run out of Lubbock will make other coaches wonder if the same will happen to them if they somehow fail to live up to the expectations of the administrators.
In my opinion, Tech is in for a few turbulent years.

TTUstud08 is spot on the money. Ruff is NOT head coach material. When he says look at his body of work he invites some serious criticism. He may be a nice guy, good recruiter and motivator, but he is NOT head coach material at this point. He has only done a mediocre to fair job with the defense. The Alamo Bowl win did not prove anything to me. It was Mike Leach’s plays and Lincoln Riley’s offense that one this game. Ruff just stood on the sidelines and took the credit. His record as special team’s coach was less than stellar. Ruff has nothing on his resume that says he can compete with Bob Stoops or Mack Brown–NOTHING, except an Alamo Bowl win that had been prepared for by Mike Leach. I’m really not interested in what Baron Batch, Jamar Wall, or Brandon Carter have to say on the matter. They will be gone very soon. No one can deny that Ruff is well liked by his players, but as one poster accurately described him: he was the mamma while Leach was the disciplining dad. WE MUST HAVE SOMEONE WITH SOME NAME RECOGNITION and a commitment to Texas Tech. Art Briles should be first on the list and Tommy Tuberville should be second.
I hear all this stuff about hiring Tommy Tuberville, he did a great job at Auburn, Auburn, bigger stadium, bigger budget, higher profile, look at what his record was at Ole Miss, that is going to be more comparable to what he would be able to do here and the recruits he would be able to get. Art Briles, oh yeah, what has he done, oh Baylor won 5 games this year, yeah hire him that would be great. You can say all you want to if he only had Robert Griffin then they would have won more, well they didn’t. Plus the school will be entangled in a huge lawsuit and will not be able to pay a buyout, contract, and a settlement all at the same time. The smart choice is to give the job to Ruff, let him show the world that he is a class act, a great ambassador. And all you guys saying he can’t recruit, THESE ARE HIS AND LINCOLN RILEY’S RECRUITS. Leach was not in the homes until after January. WRECK ‘EM!!! Oh yeah Leach is gone move on, we will play football next year.

I think Ruffin would be the best choice for the job!!!! And for those of you who think Tubberville is the best choice you have the same amount of intelligence as Gerald Myers, which isn’t much. My grandfather was heavily involved in Tech athletics for a long time and knew Gerald Myers, Spike and others in the athletic department and I think he is rolling over in his grave right now over the way things have been going. Myers and Hance, who if you haven’t heard, have been planning this since last season. There are email proof of this. Anyway, you have to have players respect as a head coach and Ruffin has the respect of the players. We need that to move forward. Get a guy in there who knows nothing of the players, the program, etc and you will take several steps back in all respects. HIRE RUFF, GO RUFF and GO TECH. FIRE HANCE / MYERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lubbock, Tex.—Texas Tech starts to interview candidates for the head coach position, and Team Leach is on the high seas of the South Plains. Armed with flags, eye patches, double Ts, and protest signs, these students have scheduled another stand-in:
The TEAM LEACH “Reach for Leach” rally will take place on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. at Memorial Circle!
School will be back in, so this will be huge! Bring your signs, cameras, your voice, come out in pirate attire, and be ready to make some noise!
Celebrate what Coach Leach did for us, and give him the send off he deserves! Be civil, respectful, and be positive!
http://teamleach.org redirects to this event if you want to share the link with friends!
As stated on their Facebook page, Team Leach has almost reached 54,000 members. This could fill the Tech Jones Stadium, and this is about 20,000 more members than there are students enrolled.
These students demand for their voices to be heard.
But I have some advice for Team Leach, and here it is.
Tech is getting a new coach, regardless if you like it or not. (My vote is Tuberville: War Eagle!)
Team Leach needs to start pushing for a change in how the Tech administration treats the student.
Get involved with Student Government and petition the university; demand that the administration should start listening to the student voice.
Think about it. Change has happened over much less circumstances.

Apparently, Mr. McNeill is truly a nice guy. Popular. Everybody loves him. All that is good. But, are we talking about a winning team or not? McNeill might very well be able to come through — who knows? And that is the exact point: He is an unknown. He led the team through the Alamo Bowl, but not too gloriously. And the game plan had already been prescribed by the man-we-shall-not-mention. Right? So, what do we really know about Mr. McNeill except that he a genuinely good man?
Most of us want a winning team — again.

Everyone thinks that there are no winners here but it seems to me that the Tech administration seems to be winning, ESPN gets a huge win, the James family looks like it has won, the kid was at the game with a huge smirk on his face and the only real loser here is Coach Leach. The players seem to have turned away and even the coaching staff. It seems to me that the Leach band-wagon has gone away.
I love Raider football and I will continue to watch because I am a Raider till I Die. I wish Coach Leach the best, I hope that in the end justice will be served. I hope that he lands another coaching job and you can bet that I will watch his team win.
The administration gets to do what they want whether you like it or not. Let’s face it, you’re still going to attend the games and give them as much of your money as possible. Unless the stadium is empty come next season, we have lost and have allowed the administration to run over us as well. If MIke is innocent, I say we boycott next season in his support and do so until the administration is forced to resign. This is the only way we will get our voices heard, otherwise, you have all failed to show your real support.
I would love to see an empty stadium in honor of Coach Leach. WE HAVE MORE POWER THAN THE ADMINISTRATION AND WE MUST MAKE OUR STAND by NOT ATTENDING OPENING GAME. THIS WOULD BE HUGE!!!

What makes any of you believe that a majority of the Tech students give a flip about Leach? They come to get an education, spend most of their time (hopefully) studying, and try to find a job after graduation. How many of the student population actually attends the football games? They are just, for the most part, a Saturday afternoon (5-6times a year) diversion from academia as it should be. When I was in college, the football team had 2 coaches in the 4 years I was there and the team was pretty successful. Most of the students didn’t really care; they had too many other things on their mind, namely to graduate and contribute to society and not be a burden to it. Most of the hate-mongers who have been posting on all of these sites the last week, need to relax, step back, and figure out how important the lost of this egomanic Leach is to the grand scheme of things. Needless to say, Leach is gone forever and the sun will still rise in the East tomorrow morning; back to life.

WHOA never new a Raider could be so negative. I think you are missing the points. Leach deserves his due, he elevated the football program to a National Level. People from across this country who are not Raiders enjoyed watching our games. There is a lot issues going on here.
Leach has endeared himself to the Student body and Alums. He was very popular with the young and old.
His Football teams filled the Stadium. $$$$$
Some people are upset that he was fired especially before a National Bowl game.
The emails are sooooo embarrassing to our University!
People are upset with the way this went done.
Many are upset with the way the AD and Admin are handling the issues.
Furious that no one will step up to the plate tell it like it is.
People care about Tech and are upset how this has damaged our University.
They know it will impact fund raising on the academic side.
We matter and we deserve to be treated better, we care don’t blow us off.

My focus was on the students (now) at Tech. Previous comments, by alums(maybe) and otherwise fans keep talking about how the students were let down and how disappointed they are. My question again is, just how “hurt”, disappointed, etc. is the everyday student. How many of the 11,000 or so alloted student tickets are taken, week in and week out. I still say this ordinary student, trying to get an education and graduate before he runs out of money, cares little about the drama surrounding this whole affair. When McNeill is hired, and he will be, those same students will fall back into their regular habit of game attendance, or not. If the stadium holds 65K and 11K students show up, that’s only at most 17%. I’d wager that on game day, there won’t be 17% in student attendance. The same holds true of the basketball games. Wouldn’t it be interesting to know how many of the 100′s of posts on these sites are actually Tech students.
