Cold reception

Texas Tech receiver Adam James was loudly booed as he left the field at halftime of Saturday’s Alamo Bowl. James is a key figure in the controversy that led to the firing of Tech coach Mike Leach three days before the game.

James, wearing his No. 82 Tech jersey and a stocking cap, left the field in the company of a few teammates after most of the Red Raiders had gone in. Fans next to and above the Alamodome’s southeast tunnel rose to boo him. He showed no reaction.

The sophomore inside receiver was on the sideline during the game.

His old self

Tech quarterback Taylor Potts had his last name back on his jersey during the Alamo Bowl after wearing “NICK’’ across his shoulder pads during the final two games of the regular season.

Potts did continue to wear “NICK’’ on his practice jersey during the week in San Antonio.

It was a vestige of the nickname given to him by former coach Mike Leach.

Dodging a bullet

All-Big Ten kicker Brett Swenson suffered a rarity when he had a 52-yard field goal attempt blocked by Tech’s Daniel Howard in the
second quarter.

The Michigan State senior came into the game 18-for-20 this season and 70-for-89 in his career. Though Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones was a first-team All-American and the media’s choice for Big Ten defensive player of the year, Swenson was named team most valuable player in a vote of teammates.

Swenson’s 70 field goals and 370 career points ranked second in the nation among active players in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

It was Tech’s first field goal block since Taylor Charbonnet got one in the 2008 season opener against Eastern Washington.

Trading places

Michigan State sophomore Keith Nichol made his first career reception in the second quarter. Nichol played in nine games this season as the team’s No. 2 quarterback, throwing for 764 yards and seven touchdowns.

MSU coach Mark Dantonio announced Friday that Nichol had practiced at wide receiver this week.

“He’s certainly a guy who can do a lot of things,’’ Dantonio said, adding that punt returner is another possibility. “We’ve known all along he’s an explosive athlete.’’

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound sophomore started his career at Oklahoma, where he played in three games in 2007 before transferring.

In brief
Tech S Will Ford apparently suffered an injury in the first half. He spent the second half on the sideline in windsuit pants and his jersey, but no pads. … Freshman RB Eric Stephens already set the Tech single-season record for kickoff return yardage in the regular season. A runback by Stephens in the second quarter established a new single-season team record in the same category. … Tech PK Matt Williams made a 42-yard field goal in the second quarter, but the Raiders were flagged for a snap infraction and moved back 5 yards, after which Williams missed a 47-yard kick.

Congratulations Raiders!!!! Way to come back and take the win over Michigan St. That was a fitting tribute to Coach Leach. You took what he installed in 10 years of coaching and converted it into a win tonight. The meticulous attention to detail that Coach Leach insisted on day in and day out during practice certainly paid off. You should be proud of your performace tonight!! Texas Tech has the most explosive and exciting game in college football today. I hope that tonight’s performance is not the last time we in Raider Nation will expericence it. Thanks to the Tech Administration for putting that into jeporady. More Importantly, THANK YOU COACH LEACH FOR 10 GREAT YEARS AT TEXAS TECH, THOSE OF US WHO COUNT WILL MISS YOU!!!!!!

I’m a Kansas alum-fan-explayer who has alot of respect for TTech football and for Coach Leach. Great win last night! Coach Leach has brought alot of excitement and recognition to Big 12 football. It’s a shame that he’s gone. I was disgusted by the way the ESPN announcer (who replaced Craig James) handled the game last night. He said the evening was all about the game and the team. But then, he bagged on Leach the entire time, as did other ESPN announcers during the last several days. It seemed inappropriate for ESPN to go out of their way to influence public opinion in favor of Craig James.
The James family said they called to complain after “praying about it”? So, God told them to complain? Did he tell them to make all their previous calls to the coaches and administration too?
Laziness is a four letter word to football coaches. It’s clear from Leach’s comments that his treatment of little James was the result of frustration that has built up over a long period of time. It’s too bad he couldn’t find a way to just take the kid’s scholarship away at the end of the year (though the administration probably would have interferred with this action too).
Also, Leach didn’t report directly to the Chancellor did he? Why no published comments from the AD?
Good Luck Red Raiders. You did the Big 12 proud in the Alamo Bowl.Despite the efforts of ESPN, your athletic administration looks a bit dull, but your football team will be fine. Please beat Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska for me.

Coach Leach may not have been on the sidelines last night, but the victory belongs to his preparations … carried out by coaches he hired and players he recruited and trained.

It would have been the ideal way to punish Mike Leach for not playing him. Craig and Adam James instead lied to media that he was “locked in a closet”, because they perceived that they would be charged with filing a false report to police, if they tried that. The problem is that this year’s team was ripe with megalomaniacs who did not like it when Leach disciplined them. He grew fed up with James’ antics and told the trainer to take him to a dark place. He did not expect him to practice, but he did expect him to show up dressed in team gear, which he did not, and be supportive on the sideline, which he was not. He simply chose to remove him and eliminate the distraction. Who brings a cell phone to practice? Apparently, Adam James does. I can’t believe the barbaric way Tech fans treated James. Can you really defend a caoch who treats players in such a degrading and possibly medically neglegent way? My daughter is a 6′4″ high school freshman star b-ball player who her and I loved Texas Tech until we saw the way James was degraded by fans, and Leach was supported for being a barbarian.

sportsfan has found what should be the true concern in this scenario. This could have huge impact on the women’s basketball recruiting. Y’all quit supporting Leach right now.

This video speaks volumes about Coach Leach, his character, and his methods. Coaching is a tough, high pressure, demanding job. Unfortunately, Leach has fallen victim to his own success which has led to an arrogance and haughtiness towards his players and anyone that questions him. No one doubts his football intelligence. But these controversies are getting more frequent and an indication that he is caving into the pressure. He could have bent, instead he made a choice and he broke. Simple acts of humility, admittings things could have been handled differently, and showing that he is capable of listening to others in authority would have saved his a*s and probably regained respect from his players and bosses.

Fans are usually rabid, insane idiots who never listen to reason when something goes wrong. There is blame to go around here but Leach just didn’t play his cards right and he lost this time. Will he learn? Can he resurrect his career? his reputation? Time will tell. My guess is he is smart enough that if he really wants to get back into coaching he will have to change his attitude and grow a little more emotional intelligence.

This ought to “shed” some light on expenses and cost-to-benefit ratio of Coach Leach. Mike Leach was a boon to TTU and brought in tons of revenue. This was all about personality clashes and power.

Check out the link. This ought to get your dander up.

no dummy, it shows that if leach would’ve at least helped, he could’ve increased revenue at ttu.

but, he spit in the face of the administration. he refused to solicit funds. he just walked around campus in his shorts, mumbling to himself and talking about pirates.

BV, that’s all good info and makes a valid point. I also checked out the Londonraider article and it was good info. But as others have said before me “that ship has sailed”. I am a leach fan but I am a Red Raider first. I will wait and see what the BOR does here. If they settle with leach, get a top notch coach, and Meyers retires then they have made chicken salad out of this. My concern is for Tech, Leach was insubordinate. I don’t blame him for his disgust with some, but we’ve all had a bad boss and when you are there he is still the boss. You have to at least pretend he is in charge.
