James family statement on events

Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach has been indefinitely suspended by the university for allegedly mistreating Adam James after the sophomore receiver was injured earlier this month.

The following is an account of how James was injured and diagnosed by Tech’s medical staff, according to Rebecca Shaw, a spokeswoman for James and his family:

Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach reportedly had receiver Adam James placed in one of these equipment sheds after team doctors diagnosed James with a concussion. (Geoffrey McAllister/Avalanche-Journal)

James was injured during a scrimmage on the evening of Dec. 16 when he suffered a blow to the head. He reported symptoms including dizziness, blurred vision and a headache to Tech trainer Buzz Chisum, who advised James to see team physician Dr. Michael Phy the next day. On the night of the injury, James experienced nausea and vomiting.

Phy performed diagnostic tests on Dec. 17 and confirmed James had suffered a concussion. Phy said James would need to be withheld from practice, avoid any type of physical activity for five to seven days, and undergo further evaluation after that point.

Phy’s diagnosis was communicated to head trainer Steve Pincock, who relayed the information to Leach.

Texas Tech…censoring what your coaches are saying? The kids own coach’s are saying he is soft, and the only reason this is an issue is becaue he is Craig James son. Other than that hes like your 10th best reciever, and anyone who can catch can play in your offense. Truth is, the people running your school/athletic department obviously are not huge Leach fans. So that added on to the fact the player is Craig James son makes this a perfect storm. What Leach, the coach’s, and ex players said about James should be on here. Did you guys decide to take after China and start censoring MAJOR stories for obvious political reasons? Those statements made by YOUR OWN COACH’S and EX PLAYERS should be a story on here, I don’t know how its not. I blame half of this on ESPN in the initial reporting of the story, they were so biased. However, as more facts come out, its obvious Adam James is a soft kid with a serious sense of entitlement, and a famous daddy. Tell the kid to man up, its football and there is NO CRYING. I came to this website to try and get some more perspective on it, instead of just reading bias ESPN crap. Im highly diasppointed in the quaity of the reporting on this website. I thought they took football matters serious in Texas? I don’t know what kind of education program YALL have down there, but hopefully it youre not a journalism school.

Anyone defending the coach has probably never suffered a concussion. The treatment of James is simply not how you treat another human being. I can understand the coach not wanting the player to treat the time off like a vacation, but that’s ridiculous. Defending the coach is asinine.

The concussion is not what this story is about, it’s just the cover for Myers and Craig James. It’s about a smart Alec kid who thought the rules didn’t apply to him. Tech overreacted, and now the entire football program is on the brink. This could have been handled so much better, but Myers put his personal vendetta above the well being of the University.

The question to be answered is did Leach’s action endanger Adam James’ health or did it endanger his dignity. This is why it should be brought out in court. Only Dr. Phy could say with reasonable accuracy since he is the only physician who examined Adam at that time. The court has the powers to reveal all of the facts to all of us. The court is the shield for all three parties and their actions. It may not side the way each individual wants it to. However, at least all of the facts will be out in the open for us to decide how we truly feel.

More Notes on Leach vs. James Family

    1. Statement by Inside Receivers Coach, Lincoln Riley-

“Two practices before Adam James claimed he had a concussion, Coach Leach and I were forced to discipline him for poor effort from the previous practice and poor effort during the early drills of that day. This has been a common theme about Adam’s work ethic and attitude during his entire career… He complained to me that we were not doing our jobs as coaches and that his effort was just fine… I have no doubt that anger from this led to where we are today with this situation and is his way of trying to ‘get back’ at us coaches.”

Thanks Tech for bowing to either pressure from a nobody sportscaster with a whiner of a son or from a AD who puts his own interest before the school. This put the the football program back 10 yrs. Leach will be gone becuase how could he ever feel the support of the school now? Jeers to the administration for making a ruling before the “on-going” investigation is complete and making a joke of our program.

I’m not sure anyone is disputing whether or not the kid was diagnosed with a concussion. That is irrelevant. The point is that they have an insubordinate player that they attempt to get to do something, anything, during practice while injured and can’t get him to do anything. So they send him, like a child, to the corner.

As I said before, standing in a dark room is “mistreatment” about like making AlQaeda prisoners build a cheerleading pyramid is “torture.” Our definitions of things today are all fouled up – bent out of all reason for ulterior purposes.

Thats what needs to be looked at, placing a kid in a shed, because if I had this building I would put a lawn mower, rakes, trash barrels, christmas decorations and not concussed players. Then placing him in a media room which no one frequents, it was obivious discipline but when a kid has an injury it grazes the brim of torture. Even if everyone thinks or knows that he was faking treat the kid, why let it get to this stage of Leach acting like his in junior high while damaging facts are presented on mistreatment, why not expose the kid before all of this stuff happened. The kid has a decision if he wants to be there or not, if everybody had a consensus about why was he still on the team?

How is this even news? Everyone knows the kid had a concussion. What difference does it make how it happened? The issue is he had to stand for about an hour and a half on two separate occasions while not being exposed to direct sunlight. Why don’t you talk with some physicians and report on the physical dangers that action poses to a kid with a concussion? I’m sure there are some lengthy medical journals out there focussed on the dangers posed to student athletes subjected to standing for an entire 90 minutes. That would actually be some news we don’t already know.

Of course not, so why the need for the embellishment? And just to keep facts straight here, Home Depot sells sheds, stand alone garages and outdoor storage. Tim, I liked the point you made earlier, why was he even on the team, or still on the team? First off, you can’t go off what any of the current players or coaches are saying at the moment. They are not allowed to say what they think, so it is next to pointless to listen to them. However the former players and coaches are not under those same restrictions and the link I’m pasting at the bottom of this is from many of those individuals.

Now back to what Tim asked why was he on the team to begin with? One of the letters from Leach’s former inside receiver coach, Dana Holgorsen, paints an interesting picture. I’m most interested in him saying, “After a conversation between Coach Leach and Adams father Craig, Coach Leach acquired a brief highlight tape of Adam and made the decision to take him as a scholarship student athlete. I was opposed to doing so in belief he was not a D1 football player.”

So if no other D1 schools were considering him and Leach is obviously a pretty darn good judge of tallent especially when it comes to receivers, why this kid? I can’t imagine Leach caring at all who Adam’s dad was, unless he was genuinely convinced by the guy his kid could make the necessary improvements to be a D1 player. The other possibility is Craig could have already gone over Leaches head to someone else in the administration and unbeknownst to Holgorsen, Leach was feeling pressure to sign the kid. I’m not saying it was Myers directly, but maybe some Alumn that Craig is buddy buddy with and then they were able to apply some pressure on the department… who knows. I do know for a fact that type of thing goes ALL THE time. I’ve seen it first hand, so I don’t believe it is some wild theory. I think both scenarios are possible, however, I believe the second to be more probable. That would be a nice piece of journalism to dig that story up.
