Former Tech players support suspended Leach
Mike Leach’s outspokenness, unconventional coaching methods and quirky behavior on and off the football field have been well-documented. He’s also been known to verbally criticize his players, sometimes publicly.
According to several of his
former players, though, Texas Tech’s head coach is not in the least bit a bully or a bad guy.
Several former Red Raiders vehemently defended Leach on Monday after he was indefinitely suspended by the university for his alleged mistreatment of an injured player. Leach’s punishment came in response to a complaint made by sophomore receiver Adam James and his family, along with the results of an internal investigation that Tech administrators said is ongoing.
“I’m privy to a lot of stuff going on down there, and I think the whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. I’m totally in support of coach Leach,” said former offensive lineman Cody Campbell, who was part of Leach’s first recruiting class at Tech. “I’ve heard Adam James was involved with it, he supposedly had a concussion and that Leach basically made him adhere to team rules and guidelines when it comes to injuries. And (James) was upset by that.
“Leach has unusual methods for doing things a lot of times, but he’s never cruel and never out of line in doing them.”
Former Tech offensive lineman Daniel Loper, who now plays for the NFL’s Detroit Lions, also was stunned and surprised by the allegations against Leach. Loper said the incident in question is nothing like the one earlier this year at Kansas, where head coach Mark Mangino resigned amid allegations that he abused his players verbally and physically.
“The whole time I was there, and as well as I know coach Leach, he would never do anything to publicly humiliate or endanger someone’s wellbeing, and he would never do anything unprofessional,” Loper said. “… I never saw him show any kind of favoritism or any kind of hate toward any singular person.”
Former players Graham Harrell and Eric Morris, who finished their Tech careers last season, said Leach handles injured players appropriately and equally. They said Leach and his coaching staff do not pressure players to return to the field before they’re healthy enough to do so, and Morris also said injured players are required to participate in practices just like every other Red Raider.
For example, a player with an injured leg would be required to do pushups during a workout so he could maintain his conditioning and continue to build strength. Former Tech offensive lineman Glenn January referred to the common practice as “Muscle Beach” and also said Leach “doesn’t deviate from the (NCAA) rule book at all and wouldn’t do anything to put a player in harm at all.”
“If you’re injured, you’re required to still participate in some form or fashion. You still have to be outside and doing something,” Morris said. “At times people have tried to get away with faking a little nag here and there, and to get away from people doing that, you always need to let everybody know they’re not going to stand around and do nothing. It’s a great thing to have in place. Some people want to get complacent and do different things because things aren’t going their way.”
Harrell, who finished the 2008 regular-season finale against Baylor despite breaking several bones in his hand during the first half, said Leach left the decision up to him and did not pressure the quarterback to play through the injury. Harrell also said he had the blessing of Tech’s trainers and doctors.
“He was hard on us,” Harrell said, “but it wasn’t like he ever threatened us or put us in a situation that was dangerous to us.”
Some former Tech players, who said they have been in contact with current Red Raiders and the coaching staff, questioned the validity of James’ complaint as well as his motives and intentions. They also said James has a reputation for being soft and somewhat of a prima donna.
“I think some people honestly are not tough enough to play college football, and (James) might be one of them, especially if he’s worried about being called out or humiliated,” Loper said. “… Sometimes that happens, especially at the collegiate level. It’s not like high school and Pop Warner, where everyone gets to play and gets a pat on the back. Sometimes coaches can be mean and yell.”
January said the shed in which James spent practice on Dec. 17 might have been the most appropriate place to deal with his concussion, because it kept him out of the sunlight. January said he and his teammates on the offensive line often retreated to the same shed during practices to rest and escape the heat.
“It’s not like it’s some dungeon,” he said.
January and some other former Tech players also suggested the incident wouldn’t have been scrutinized if James wasn’t the son of Craig James, a former SMU and NFL standout who now works as a television analyst for ESPN.
“It’s basically a non-issue,” January said. “The only reason it’s getting any attention is because of who his dad is.”
Neither Adam James nor any other Tech player was made available for comment Monday after Leach’s suspension was announced, and Craig James did not return multiple calls from The A-J seeking comment.
Regardless of what happened, many former Tech players said the timing of the Jameses’ complaint and Leach’s subsequent suspension is unfortunate. The Red Raiders face Michigan State in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday, and it’s also prime recruiting season.
Former players such as Harrell, Loper and Ryan Aycock said Tech administrators, recruits and even fans should not rush to judgement.
“Anybody that looks into this story should not be shied away,” Loper said. “I don’t know the whole situation with Adam’s father and his influence, and I don’t know if they’re thinking they’re being mistreated like the deal at Kansas. I don’t think this is a situation where (Leach) should be fired or even suspended. From what I’ve heard, I think it’s a little over the line.”

Agreed. I think once all the facts come out, Tech will have a lot of egg on it’s face. Hopefully, Leach will still be the coach.
I don’t know how much weight former players comments will have in the final decision, but it clearly shows this is NOT a Kansas / Mangino situation.
I’ve been to the practice field and if the shed in question is the one I have seen, then it’s hardly a shed at all. If it’s the same structure that I believe it to be, then this is really much ado about nothing and the James family is really playing this thing up.

This is sad. Leach is a great man who cares about his players more than many other coaches in college ball. He turned Tech’s football program around and into something Texas could be proud of. The previous coach ran that team into the ground.
This all sounds very fishy and stinks.
Coach Mike, the public trusts you and we are behind you. Get your guns up and dont give in.

Interesting…. Sounds like Leach is about to become AD. If my memory serves me correctly, Myers was in the dog house for raising a hand to a player. They moved him to the front office…then became AD.

I was just befuddled by the Tech administration “parental control” malfunction…before the investigation is even completed. The administration should’ve just swallow the James statement pill and kept quiet under the banner of “ongoing investigation” avoiding therefore the press going crazy and distracting the team from the upcoming game.
What are appropriate training methods and when the medical personnel should be involved to override coach’s orders? Where the coaching methods go from here and how coaches can protect themselves from medical and political correctness?
Was there a medical directive to rest James until further tests? Why did Leach pull Potts and let him rest when Potts had concussion? Why not with James? Investigation should determine the details but until then Leach, like any American citizen, should not be publicly spanked by mighty parent Myers. We, fans and former players, are not ignorant. Concussion is more serious than a broken leg, but we need to wait for the facts before making claims about coach or anybody. And as far as an “inappropriate” coaching, please tell that to Herb Brooks or Vince Lombardi or should we stop beat our chests about Miracle on Ice victory and our football legends and achievements.

Even in Big12 football where, who knows, how many shady things go on behind the closed doors…we see this happen to Tech. No matter what any single person’s opinion is, you have to take into account the fact that the head pirate earned a law degree from Pepperdine. The man knows damn well what is liable and what is not under the microscope of the media, as well as the administration of TT. This is not like so many other situations we have seen at other universities, even in our own conference. The man could have left us and did not. He signed a contract that was, at a minimum, what he earned. I am very pleased by the same day statements from former Red Raiders on this issue. If you believe in God my fellow Red Raiders, join me in prayers tonight for coach. Lets also hope this does not cost us the commitments of any of this year’s fine talent.

It’s really unfortunate that Coach Leach won’t be able to get credit for the Alamo Bowl after everything he has overcome this season. For a rebuilding year, it turned out very well. I hope less attention is given to James over the current allegations and that the Tech fans display their loyalty and gratitude to Leach in the Alamo Bowl.

Gotta admit I was so upset with Leach continually interviewing with other schools (and not getting any offers I might add) last yr I was ready for him to go. But then things settled down and all seemed to be forgiven and it looked like we had stability and progress once again. I am now on coach Leaches side and feel the admin over-reacted over fear of the James family possible filing law suit, etc this very week. You really think ESPN would’ve allowed that this particular week? I don’t know.
Two things probably for sure:
We keep the pirate and APOLOGIZE to him, and-
Adam James transfers out of the state of Texas and even gives up on football.
With all the new freshmen receivers moving up next yr there is just NO WAY James would see any playing time. In fact, I think this is just between Craig James ego and Mike Leach stubborness. Adam James would probably not have allowed this to go public by any means, so too bad for the kid. What did Craig daddy want our Regents to do? Pay him off like SMEW – no way man! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out Craig James – hypocrit!!

I’ve been waiting for this report. I wanted to hear what some former players had to say about Leach, because THAT would be the absolute best source for determining if Leach has a problem disciplining his players, or not. NOTHING is more reliable than what his former players say about him….NOTHING! Current players really can’t say anything except off the record, but former players surely can…..and they are.
I wonder if Tech officials are thinking about the repercussions this will cause. Are they thinking about the magnitude of this? This not only affects Tech football, but the entire university. This is going to anger ALL students….the majority of whom are solidly on Leach’s side. And those students (and alumni) DON’T WANT another coach unless the coach they have has TRULY done something to DESERVE getting fired over. And THIS bogus event doesn’t even come close. I really feel sorry for Leach. He does not deserve this.
This whole story is bogus and sensationalized. Former players reportedly see this situation with James pretty much as all the people on this board do. It’s a case of a sissy player with a powerful dad making waves. This absolutely reeks of “much ado about nothing.”
I’ll side with Leach (our 10 year coach) and his former players ANY day of the week over some spoiled little slacker and his powerful daddy.
If Myers and the Board don’t do the right thing here, it will be a travesty. It’s clear what’s going on, and nobody knows what’s going on better than current and former players!
Fans of Leach and Tech need to make their thoughts known on this. They need to write emails and letters to loudly protest ANY negative action being taken against Leach.
This is going to hurt Tech, and all because of a few men who kowtow to the likes of Craig James instead of sticking up for their coach of 10 years. What cowards they are.
I’m so mad I could spit.

Ask his players, present and past, about his coaching methods. The administration should not presume guilt until proven, this is America. We are beginning to act like the current Washington government when one has no rights but are guilty until proven innocent.
Listen to his past players. Sports at this level demand a lot from the players and one has to make the decision what one will do for the team. We all underwent “punishment” when playing and practicing.
The James family action is standard practice in today’s world. The head of the placement office at our local university tells me of stories of parents calling the employers of their children to complain of bad evaluations rather than allowing their child to grow up and take responsibility for himself or herself.
We need to get behind Coach Leach and his staff along with our Red Raider team now. Tell Coach Leach he is the one we want to lead our team. Let the administration, including Mr. Hance (chancellor) and Mr. Guy (interim president) know how we feel. Do not let them mess up a good thing while they proceed with their investigation which should be done before any penalties are dealt out.

I am tired of the Myers’ being bigger than the good of the department and I will no longer support it. Tell the Pres and Chancellor and regents where your dollars will not be going in the future if Myers is still around. Any protest should hit them in the pocketbook. It’s the ONLY thing they understand. Boycotting the game would do that better than anything. If you were going to buy tickets, don’t buy them, and let Tech know why you didn’t buy them. If you have season tickets, tell them you’re going to cancel them if Leach goes.
The players should refuse to play if their coach is not there. He has done nothing to warrant a suspension, much less a firing. But Gerald Myers certainly has. He needs to pay the price for failing to support his 10 year coach and for responding so unprofessionally and thoughtlessly. Putting this in national headlines was the worst thing Myers could have possibly done….IF he’s interested in keeping a good name for Texas Tech. But that’s exactly what he and the Board did with their silly knee-jerk reaction.
Throwing your legendary coach under the bus while kowtowing to someone because he works for ESPN is about as cowardly as it gets.

In today’s politically correct world, you have to find creative ways to discipline players. You can’t run them to exhaustion like you used to could, you obviously can’t hit them (and shouldn’t be able to). A kid who has been a slacker and discipline problem shows up to practice with an attitude and sun shades, so you put him in a dark place. I think it is interesting that the family waited until 6 days prior to the bowl to make a formal complaint! If this all turns out to be blown out of proportion, Adam James and his family should make a formal apology on ESPN!! Lou Holtz even stated he put players in a dark place when they had a concussion.
I sincerely hope this is resolved and Leach is still with Tech!

I find it interesting that G Mo-Money Myers never managed to grow a pair and stand up to a proven abusive bullying Bob Knight while he was running the men’s b-ball program into the ground prior to his skulk-away for ESPN departure.
NOW Myers chooses to act on allegations?

I don’t think we know everything thats going on. When Mike Leach had contract problems we never knew the whole story until everything was done. I know Kent Hance does not like his school being on the national news about something negative. Hance runs TTU like a company town. ESPN said TTU will have to pay Leach 800 hundred thousand dollors if he is the coach after the 31st. So we should know soon what will happen.

I support Leach 100%. He has done more for the image and popularity of our university than any coach, chancelor, AD, etc in our history. We haven’t heard one single former player come out against Leach or even talk about any mistreatment of players. This has been handled very poorly. Do not bow down to Craig James and ESPN. TTU had better keep Mike Leach and lose Adam James. Myers is upset that football continues to be more popular than his beloved basketball. Get rid of Myers!

This is DUMB. Tech gets a great coach and then lets some crybaby mess it up. James needs to go back to high school so he can get the attention he wants. His dad sounds like a whimp on espn and i guess he is following in his footsteps. If you want attention, do something on the field to deserve it instead of crying. Tech needs to get a gag order against the James’ family to keep them from whinning about their poor little son that should not be at a top of the line school. Wonder if he should have considered Jr. college to get ready for real football.

Former players standing up for Coach Leach speaks volumes,no we really dont know right now what really happened, hopefully the investigation will be over shortly,in the next day or so or before, hopefully, the people that made the decision to suspend Coach Leach made the right decision, and would know the repercussions of their decisions, if not then the leadership of Texas Tech and the athletic department needs to be seriously looked at and changes made if needed. Also Espn needs to look at the involvement and broadcasting of a players father. If rules were broken then guidelines need to be set up so this never happens againas it has cost the reputation ,status of Texas Tech athletics for years to come and their loyal fans, players, and especially the seniors this year and especially Coach Leach ,whose reputation has been harmed also, personally speaking I think recruting will be greatly hurt by all of this and more than likely Leach will be gone and I wouldnt blame him one bit , Tech football will not be the same and will have a black eye for a long, long, time and Lubbock as a whole will be greatly hurt by it all my 60 years tells me this, its a sad, sad, day for us Raider fans..

While I recognize Leach has brought a quality and excitement to football at TTU, I’ve never been a Leach supporter. I’ve been in the camp of believing Leach was a quirky, out of control, moron, and a poor representative of the university. And, more than likely in this situation, he once again used some poor judgment with the James kid and was wrong – but technically how wrong – was it wrong enough to indefinitely suspend him?
For the life of me, I can’t understand why this accusation wasn’t investigated while Leach continued to coach the team? Unless there is something ginormous underlying this issue, the Administration overreacted by indefinitely suspending the pirate. Now they bring needless attention to a program that, once again, appears to be out of control and the administration looks like the Panhandle nitwits. I don’t see anyone being a winner in this situation as Leach isn’t the only one damaged. Tech’s recruiting, the team attitude, the program stability, the James’ clan, and the universities’ standing will all suffer.
Unless this accusation is a slam-dunk, the Administration now has their hand on a “tar baby” and the stickiness is only going to get worse as the plot thickens and there will be NO COVER AND NO WINNERS.

A travesty, I have worked at Gerald Myers hoop camp, and know that because basketball gets short shrift
in this state, Myers has a grudge against the whole football mentality. It has chafed Gerald like any other
basketball coach who had his program unrightfully quashed by grid coaches (left to make a choice, kids
would pick hoops over football any day of the week, but Texas football coaches are always the ADs, and they
make the schoolboys play football, a sore point to this day. At the college level, hoops again takes a back seat.
So with this axe to grind Myers should not be in the position of power. Anyone who is a Knight apologist/protector
to the degree Gerald is should be likewise protecting his great football coach if he has any integrity.
Instead he is trying to ruin a coach who is every bit the eccentric genius in his sport that Knight is in basketball.
I understand Gerald’s misplace ire. Texas IS Football, and this is exactly why Myers should not be an AD.
Basketball has NEVER got a fair shake in this state and never will, but that ain’t Mike Leach’s fault. Get out, Gerald.
You’re a bitter man trying to destroy a coach that Lubbock needs more than anything in the world: a guy who can

I think it has not been brought up, but doesn’t Texas Tech have a very high graduating percentage for football players since Leach became the coach? Would that happen if he was an uncaring person? I think it shows he is a caring person and wants each players to do the best they can be.

Thank you, Sue, for your post.
The current/former players parents angle is what I was interested in hearing(or reading) about. I wanted to know if any current/former players have ever told their parents about any mistreatment by Coach Leach to either themselves or another player. If after ten years of being head coach of Texas Tech Football the only issue with Leach is putting an injured player in a place that better suits his injury, BUT, makes him stand while the team practices then I say, WOW, this guy has run a pretty clean ship and does NOT deserve the treatment he is receiving from the TTU system. Making him stand the whole time he was confined, in my opinion, would be a way to make that player understand that he is still part of the team and although he may not be able to put on a helmet and take some hits, he is still a team player and shouldn’t feel like he can just be lazy and do nothing. I hope more parents will log on and share some of their opinions and stories about their son and about the treatment he received from coach Leach. Unfortunately, I DO NOT see a silver lining to this cloud or a light at the end of the tunnel or any other cliche for Texas Tech University, the sports department, its current students or alumi.

I feel sorry for the seniors that don’t get to play their last game in a Red Raider uniform with their head coach coaching from the sideline because of the selfishness and untimely bogus accusations of another player. I would have to say that Tech officials will have to make a decision very quickly as Coach Leachs lawyer is trying to get a injuction so he can coach the Alamo Bowl as reported on espn and he will be the coach after the 1st of the year and be entitled to 800,000 ,so I would bet that Tech will Fire Coach before that happens so they wont have to pay him, and with espn backing on the James incident , good cause,to fire him, they also probably knew that Coach would not apolgize, when they asked him too, probably , this was all planned out ahead of time, get media attention with a high profile player, suspend the coach, make him make a move to save his pride and use finances to justify firing him, hire a another coach at a lower pay that will cower down to the administration and say well Tech fans will forget eventually, theyll support their team, life moves on,who cares what they think anyways, were in charge annd espn and the national media will love us because we protected a player who had a concussion, which by the way gets a lot of press, L each will get another job and well look like heroes, remember times heals everything , that make sense, thats the only sense I can make out of this whole Fiasco. expect the unexpected…

Did I read right on another site that Leach’s lawyer has a letter from the Doctor who diagnossed Adam James’ concussion supporting the actions that Coach Leach took? It seems like this is a case of a player thinking that he is some kind of super star, but then realizes his skills are not up to par with in coming recruits and red shirts who will further reduce his opportunity for playing time. A few of the games I attended this season I would notice the hissy fits James would throw on the sideline when pulled for a sub and when his number wasnt called to sub for others. If the picture posted on the link above is in fact the “shed” he was confined to I would say James greatly exaggerated his story. I think we all should throw our support behind Kay Baily Hutchinson for Governor, maybe she will enact positive changes in the Tech Board of Regents.

For years I have held my tongue on the idiocy of Gerald Myers because for various reasons. However, it has become apparent that we as fans and alumni of Texas Tech University must come to a decision. Do we want the leadership of Gerald Myers or the coaching of Mike Leach? Gerald’s over-sized ego has finally made it too apparent to ignore that he puts his own vendettas and self-importance in front of the universities. Putting a kid who had a “slight concussion” and was released by doctors in a room previous players go for conditioning when not participating in team workouts is HARDLY a cruel and unusual punishment. It certainly does not even begin to border on ABUSIVE.
The fact that Kent Hance has supported Gerald Myers in this ridiculous investigation of trumped up charges makes me sick! I practiced law for years myself, have taught at Tier 1 universities, and I cannot understand how this administration could handle the situation so badly. HOW has a player been endangered or grossly mistreated in the circumstances alleged by Adam James and his father? So what if the kid was made to stay in the equipment room??? The sunlight aggravates a concussion? Well, the kid was put in the darkest place possible.
This really boils down to a disgruntled family with an over-developped sense of importance. I am glad that Leach stood up to James, ESPN, etc. The man has integrity and that is hard to find these days. Myers has made one crappy decision after another…look at the hiring of the last two volleyball coaches (yeah, that’s right they did not have ONE win this year) or at the women’s basketball record (yeah, in four years from elite status to number 10 in the conference.)
Leach should not have been suspended on these flimsy allegations. Leach merited the benefit of the doubt after such a spotless ten years at Tech. Myers has made it clear that he cannot be just and impartial. It is TIME for him to go before our football program is ruined.

Adam James sucked anyways. even if he was in a closet, Leach did the right thing by making the team better with james not being there. im sorry but i never did like the kid. Maybe im just used to guys playing football and i never thought i would see brittney spears wearing our jersey.

Your allegation is silly.
As a former b-ball player, I can tell you I’d never want Adam James as a teammate. He is one of those players who’s always looking for a shortcut or a way to slack off but then expects to be treated like a superstar. But considering who his father is, I’m not surprised. I’m no Leach fan – I can’t abide people who don’t know when to shut up – but considering that the “facts” initially reported have turned out to be exaggerated, and considering his former players aren’t providing additional “fire” for the supposed “smoke” of this incident, I think TTU administration looks foolish. This is what happens when you allow a doddering and apparently vindictive old man to continue to serve as Athletic Director. The documents attached in support of the Motion for A Temporary Restraining Order make clear that this is a Myers-driven action. Process was due, and Leach should have been afforded the chance to mount a meaningful defense before the University took action. Hance needs to step in and resolve the situation and prevent Tech from looking even more ridiculous– perhaps by rescinding the suspension and delivering Myers’ resignation/retirement announcement as a sweetener. As stated in the Texas Monthly Article, if Leach goes as the result of this debacle, the alumni will be in full-on revolt and heads will roll. Hance needs to fix this or his run at Chancellor will be about as fondly remembered and past tense as his run for governor. BUM STEERS WILL BE AWARDED AS THE RESULT OF THIS INCIDENT- HANCE DONT LET THEM BE YOURS.
As for Craig James– I wish Leach would produce an affidavit about James requesting more playtime for his son (and/or other Little League Dad incidents). Utilizing his position as a media personality to interdict in coaching decisions and then simply making things up about Leach when it didnt work will no doubt not sit well with his employers. This is on top of the hatemail they are already likely receiving. This has become a national issue– i.e. helicopter parenting, and James will be raked over the coals plenty as the result of this.
As for Adam James– I simply feel sorry for him. He is just a kid whose dad wasn’t a decent enough parent to tell him to quit crying and man up. His father’s poor choices and bad parenting have tainted any prospect of a football career for him.

Isolating people — putting them in a room by themselves — is in just about every other context known to mankind a punishment. Posting an “attendant” outside the door simply reinforces the perception. Doing this because of a concussion diagnosis? That’s beyond insane. Leach could have accomplished what he claims to have intended in a thousand ways that would not leave his intentions open to this sort of speculation.
In other words, it’s what we already knew — the man has a gift both for running a dynamic offense and making a horse’s patoot out of himself in highly visible ways. I think there are dozens of qualified men out there who can provide the former without the latter. It’s time for Leach to go. He’s just not smart enough to warrant $2.5 million in TT resources. I know, private dollars. Those are still TT resources.

I don’t know if it will make much of a difference, but if Leach is fired, Texas Tech will never receive another dime from me as an alumni. I might reconsider if they get rid of Gerald Myers.

I just emailed the Chancellor, President, and Exec. Secretary to the Board. I suggest you do the same. Tell them, respectfully, that you support Coach Leach and will NOT support Tech athletics if the inappropriately fire Leach. MAYBE Coach did something wrong, but I doubt it. If he didn’t…SHAME ON THE ADMINISTRATION!!!
I hope Tech gets this right…SO MUCH depends on it.

I think that Adam James did perhaps have an axe to grind regarding playing time
Concussions are serious.
Unfortunately Leach is over a barrell
The university will save 800K if Leach is terminated b4 the 31st …. It is next to impossible (famous Dad or not) to explain away sticking anyone with a concussion (not a jammed toe broken leg its a serious brain injury) in a well lit heated or unheated shed …) “because [Leach] thought James was faking a concussion he’d suffered during practice the previous day. Leach had him watched, and when James sat down, Leach had things removed from the shed so he could not sit. …” It is not sadly Leaches call whether someone has a concussion he is a football coach and lawyer not a medical professional …period
That coupled with his “fat little girlfriends” comment the man has repeatedly made Tech look unprofessional. Tech alumns and fans of which I am one are more interested in wins than apparently truth or health
Spring recruiting is about to be an issue and …if it were my call …. regrettably …i would say terminate him and get another coach that can execute a spread offense. candidly it is not rocket science nor does it require a law degree. Leach is lucky he wasnt incarcerated and held on bond.

Not one of these posts has mentioned the “quote’ on “raiderpower.com…forums..football titled “can’t wait till Friday when this comes out”…
This person seems to know some facts that most of you do not…
Several weeks back, Craig James(being unhappy Adam was not playing much) approached Coach Leach about letting Adam transfer out to SMU. Since it is Leach’s and Tech’s policy not to let a scholarship athlete transfer to “another Texas DIV I school”, and not to one on Tech’s schedule, Craig and son were told no.
So then Craig James goes to AD Meyers and is again told no! Then all HELL breaks loose and daddy James writes his letter and distorts the facts.
Ok so now Adam comes to practice complaining of a “concussion”…Coach Leach is skeptical; but, sends the kid to a dark room with a trainer to supervise..not once but twice….seems the proper thing to do to me?
How can the TT administration not back Coach Leach in this situation? Does ESPN have that much power?
I personally have e-mailed ESPN and complained that they are not stating the true facts either.
As for now I’M SUPPORTING COACH LEACH……until someone shows some “facts” that are more damaging!

Wake up folks. Several former KU players praised Mangino also. Try having a concussion and standing in a dark small room for three hours without getting dizzy and sick. Why was the stool ordered out of the space by Leach if not for punishment? If he (Leach) was so concerned about James not being subject to much visual and auditory stimulation, why not have him in stay in his room? Why did Leach tell an aide who was watching James that if James left the room he (James) would lose his scholarship? Is it helpful to have a student athlete sit outside on the football field to study because the kid missed a study session when the temperature was in the 30s and it was snowing , or does it Jeopardize the student’s health. This is enough for censure at least if not dismissal.
The bar has to be raised. The culture of the drill seargent coach should come to an end.

ESPN isn’t behind Leaches problem nor Tech decision to suspend him ! The story is nationwide it wasn’t buried … the fact that other news agencies other than KCBD or KLBK reported it doesn’t mean there is a conspiracy … as incredible as that may seem. Tech was ranked last year and this on the heels of the KU thing … struggling with th perspective that ESPN is the conspirator .. They have reported all that is on record thus far. Trust me IF the James family conspired eventually it will come out and Adam wont play anywhere nor will Craig be working for ESPN and then … they will be the ones under the gun.
Right now my concern as selfish as it is …Spring recruiting ….THAT is the game right now as far as I am concerned… and trust me A&M UT Baylor OU …are all high fiving each other with this story now bc of …Spring recruiting

Third string on TT?????
transfering to SMU?
who cares
Not much else to say other than let’s see:
Daddy James took payoffs and got SMU screwed up from everything I have ever read
Junior is not really D-I player from what I have seen and heard
Daddy is mediocre announcer but Leach has been great coach – jealousy ???
Daddy thinks his little boy is great player – probably was able to demand “daddy ball” at lower levels
Only thing I don’t understand – why would SMU want another James…didn’t they learn the first time????

The investigation is going to be bias given who is conducting it. It’s obvious Meyers doesn’t like Leach and would LOVE to not have to pay him $800K.

As a Texas Tech grad (have 9 years and several degrees from Texas Tech) my only question (since I’m a psychologist) is what is the real issue, and as some say “How is that working for you”. As a former Lubbockite and now a Houstonian we smell some politics from here that might be saying we don’t want to pay Mike an $800,000 bonus that he has earned.
Who brought 10 bowl games to Texas Tech aka Lubbock and their economy? Who brought a new stadium addition to Texas Tech, aka Lubbock and their economy? Who helps pay those taxes in Lubbock that everyone moans about? Where would Lubbock be without Texas Tech and professionals such as Mike Leach?
Coach Leach can go anywhere and get another job…the facts appear not to be at all about this particular incident— but just some itty bitty small minded folks who don’t believe in making young football players accountable and whatever happened to consequences for foolish behavior?

As a Tech grad and a parent of a current Tech student I am outraged at the actions of this administration in not supporting a coach that has brought so much pride to the school. The fans that know him as a fair and decent man do not understand how those in power do not put forth an investigation before taking action that has done so much damage to the man , the program he has built, and the school. Shame on you! Perhaps those who jumped to a negative conclusion to suspended a man who has proved to be worthy and taken the word of a youngster that isn’t happy with his play time and his Daddy whose pride is hurt should be suspended.

Right on Pam,
The only thing I would like to see is a firing of Myers and Hance. Why? No balls to stand up and tell Craig James to shut up and tell him if he doesn’t like it he can transfer

Coach Leach, Sue them to death. Take the money and run. Then come to Florida. We have many good Div 1 schools. Surely one of them will find a spot for you. Maybe Urban Meyer could enjoy a long vacation and you can help relieve his stress.

Wow,
It doesn’t surprise me, being from the panhandle and all, that all you belligerent Tech fans support that fat wanna-be lawyer you like to call a coach.
You’re already relegated to 2nd and 3rd tier recruits in the state of Texas. Tell me what recruits will want to come to a place where, if another incident occurs, and they make the “mistake” of speaking out on it, they will be burned at the stake out in windy Lubbock by rabid, STD-infected meth heads that make up the majority of the Tech fan base.
Way to represent Tech, way to represent!

Craig James is an idiot. ESPN is NOT much better. Texas Tech administration…you are a disgrace to the school. This entire situation was made up to get rid of coach Leach.
FACTS:
1) Craig James is the father and analyst at ESPN. ESPN picked up on the story because of Craig James. Craig James should be fired from ESPN!!
2) Baby James got hurt and wouldn’t be able to play in the bowl game.
3) Tech players go to the shed to hang out. Baby James was never locked in. The YOU TUBE Video is a sham!!!
4) Baby James IS NOT a Division I player. He is terrible. Get over it Father James!
5) Texas Tech was supposed to pay coach Leach $800,000 in bonus money if he was the coach for the bowl game.
YOU figure it out!!

I don’t know all of the facts but it sounds like Leach should not have been fired over this. Texas Tech is going to lose a great football coach. Some other university will gain from this because there is no way that Leach will be out of work for long. I really hope the University of Maryland hires him.
