Tech notes: Initial bowl ticket allotment sold out
Texas Tech announced Tuesday that it had sold its initial allotment of 11,016 tickets to the Alamo Bowl, prompting Alamo Bowl officials to allocate more tickets to be sold through Tech.
Upper-level sideline tickets in the Alamodome, all priced at $55, are what’s currently for sale for Tech’s Jan. 2 game against Michigan State.
Dave Welsh, Tech assistant athletic director for ticket operations, said there wasn’t a specific number newly allocated.
“We can keep selling and selling and selling, and whatever we need we can get from the bowl,’’ Welsh said. “They’re all upper level, and we’re going to try to help them sell as many of those tickets as we can.’’
Welsh said the Tech ticket office at the moment is filling orders and not yet assigning seats, but he said all upper-level seats being reserved are sideline/yard-line seats.
Tech said it sold more than 25,000 seats through the athletic department the last time the Red Raiders played in the Alamo Bowl in 2001.
RRC adds hotel rooms
Texas Tech announced Tuesday that the Red Raider Club has added blocks of rooms at three more hotels on the San Antonio Riverwalk after its block at the Grand Hyatt sold out.
It now has blocked off rooms at Westin Riverwalk, Marriott Riverwalk and Hilton Placio Del Rio, all within walking distance of the Alamodome, where Tech plays Michigan State on Jan. 2.
According to Tech officials, more than 1,000 rooms were reserved by Tech fans after the pairing was announced Sunday.
Reservations are being accepted through National Travel Systems by calling 1 (888) 603-8747 or (806) 794-3135 or by e-mailing at sportsinfo@nationaltravelsystems.com.
Leach: Potts to start
Tech coach Mike Leach told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he’ll stick with quarterback Taylor Potts, who started the last three regular-season games, in the Alamo Bowl.
Late in the season, Leach faulted himself for going back and forth between Potts and Steven Sheffield.
“I’m going to start Potts,’’ Leach told the newspaper. “He’s steady, and I need to settle on one and quit pulling them in and out, and then in the spring they’ll battle it out.’’
Davis honored
Tech safety Cody Davis has been named to the first team of Phil Steele Publications’ freshman all-America team. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound redshirt freshman from Stephenville is second on the team with 72 tackles and has six pass breakups.
Several Tech players also were named to Steele’s all-Big Conference team. Guard Brandon Carter was on the first unit, and the second team included defensive end Brandon Sharpe, offensive tackle Marlon Winn and cornerback Jamar Wall.
Making the third team were running back Baron Batch, wide receiver Alex Torres and defensive end Daniel Howard, and the fourth team included quarterback Taylor Potts and running back Eric Stephens.

Great. Potts is starting. Another bowl loss for us.

If potts had more agility and peripheral awareness, he would be a great quarterback. His reads of the defense after the snap need to be faster. I got a great idea instead of being to quick to write him off, why not give him our support, I said it before, its not easy being a division 1 college qb. Believe it or not, Mike Leach and company are building a solid foundation for teams of the future. Lets all be patient and good things will come. Wreck em TECH.

Congrats to all who made the team!
Now…with that said, I wonder why its important to have third, fourth, fith, sixth team selections :) It seems like the ol “everyone gets a trophy day” scenario from little league. Does anyone care if you made 3rd team? Im not trying to be cruel or mean spirited, but what message is it sending. Anyway….have an awesome day. RAIDER POWER!

orange_tea_sipper, what slaughter of a&m? 49-39, not much of one win the margin is only 10 points. Alabama will beat texas. Keep dreaming t-shirt fan.

Yes Watchdog they will battle it out, but I don’t think Sheff and Potts will be the only two. Watch out for the in-coming freshman Scotty Young from Denton Ryan, his skills will give Leach and staff something to look at! He could wind up the starter!

tDog,
Potts deserves to start the bus. Sheff should be the go to man in the bowl even if MichST is decimated!
OrangeTeaSippsy,
You live in a dream world. McCoy will get to sit in the first row and stay there! The Bama Elephant will squash you flat.

Agree, Pott’s has earned the start against M.S., Sheff should get some playing time if he’s healed.
Next year it’s all up for grabs who steps up and takes the QB job, should be an interesting off season battle.

UT………….16
McCoy will be 5th in the Heisman vote!

Pejayy66,
What does it feel like to believe somebody deserves to be put in a spot you have never played or coached?
An outsider would say thats pretty arrogant for you to say that Potts deserves to “start the bus.”. But I will leave such judgements for you to decide on your own.
All though I suspect your mind is already made up. Which is fine, meanwhile Potts and Tech will win the Alamo Bowl and Potts record the last 4 starts will be 3-1. AND, I imagine will continue to win playing his “surround sound” he talks about so much while arm chair Quarterback’s such as yourself continue to speculate on a matter that you may think you have control over, but at the end of the day contribute only empy air.

Despite the above post, I enjoy a football debate as much as anybody. I am sure that Pejayy66 is a good fella, and enjoys football as well.
I am also fallible to mistakes (yes, I know its “empty” not “empy” HA HA!!!)
See, I don’t even take myself very seriously.

By the way, I hate screen names. My name is John, what is your name Pejayy?

John,
I realize you feel the only people who can have views on football are coaches and players. However, when one is a fan and watches thousands of games, plus listens to announcer pundits, you learn a bit about the game. even people who watch little football have commented that something is just not right with Potts. His games show it. As for control what are you saying, we have no control whatsoever. But, we can watch and ponder what’s up with Potts?
As for empty air, that is funny. You are just gassed because you bought Potts stock at a high price early and now use that paper for a coaster in your surround sound room because his stock has fallen not risen. He will get the start I am sure, because Leach bought the same stock.
Pejay66 was my call sign in Nam when flying gunships for the Marine Corps; the name is Patrick. Have a nice day…

“ruff ruff. Cat fight. ”
This is coming from a guy whos screen name is “watchdog.” *rolls eyes.*
When did red raider graduate? Although given his last couple of cute posts, I suspect hes either a 40 year graduate, or a college kid with nothing better to do, or hes really trying to reel in the funny lines as a recent graduate..
As for the real story, I wish I could create a thread on why some cats on these boards don’t want Potts to start. But im afraid all I would get is a load of hot air about “mechanics” and ” inspiring confidence.”
How much more inpiring can you get than the backing of the starting running back?
*waiting for the anti-batch haters now that the secret is out.* :)

yes ladies and gentleman, I know its “inspiring” not “inpiring.” My kid is on my lap as we speak! Makes it hard to type!!

This proves/shows as pertains to the Holiday Bowl: 1. Tech travels better than Nebraska. (Check recent Cotton Bowls.) 2. Holiday Bowl is still angry about the torching Tech gave to Cal when said California Darlings with Aaron Rodgers came in ranked number 4 against Tech and were victims of an atomic bomb blast. 3. It would be interesting to learn the connections/payments Nebraska had with the Hol Bowl Selection Committee. From the standpoint of cheating, it should always be remembered that when the NCAA got serious about steroids, NEBRASKA STOPPED WINNING AFTER 40 YEARS, AND IS 0-4 AGAINST TECH SINCE THEY HAD TO GIVE UP STIMULANTS.
