A new name, a new number and new uniforms
I’m checking in late from Jones Stadium, because it took me about half an hour to get online. Anyway, it’s a gorgeous day for a football game, and it’s always an exciting one when Texas Tech hosts Oklahoma.
The Red Raiders already have a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter, thanks to an impressive opening drive by Taylor Potts. He completed his first six passes for 49 yards, and Baron Batch had back-to-back gains of 11 yards – one on a run and one on a shovel pass – to set up a 33-yard field by Matt Williams.
Potts has had a tendency to hold the ball too long and force throws into tight coverage, but he made quick decisions on the opening drive and put the ball right where he needed to. Maybe it’s his new name.
The back of Potts’ jersey says “Nick” instead of Potts. I’m told it’s a quasi-nickname given to him by Tech head coach Mike Leach, and the rest of the back story isn’t clean enough to write in this space.
Also, Tech defensive end Ra’Jon Henley is wearing No. 40 today in honor of senior Nathan Stone, who suffered a season-ending injury during the New Mexico game. And Oklahoma is wearing all-white throwback jerseys for the first time.
