Ready for another wild weekend of college football?
We’ve arrived at the penultimate weekend of college football’s regular season, which means it’s time to put up or shut up. Several conference races still hang in the balance, and many teams, including Texas Tech, are scrambling to become bowl eligible.
Others, like No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Alabama, might as well have byes. The Gators host Florida International, while the Crimson Tide welcome Chattanooga.
I’m pretty sure those games won’t go down to the wire, but several others figure to be much more competitive and meaningful. Here’s the rundown, with all games on Saturday, all times Central and current BCS rankings where applicable. I went 15-3 last week – my best record yet – and am 121-55 for the season.
North Carolina (7-3, 3-3 ACC) at Boston College (7-3, 4-2), 11 a.m., ESPN2: The Eagles have more to play for, because two wins and a loss by Clemson to Virginia would make them Atlantic Division champs. But the Tar Heels are playing better, having won three in a row. Two of those wins were against ranked opponents. … UNC 21-17.
No. 10 Ohio State (9-2, 6-1 Big Ten) at Michigan (5-6, 1-6), 11 a.m., ABC: The conference championship, and subsequent Rose Bowl berth, is the Buckeyes’ to lose. All they’ve got to do is beat the rival Wolverines in the Big House, which is much easier than it used to be. Michigan has lost four in a row and six of seven after a promising start. … Ohio State 34-10.
Chattanooga (6-4) at No. 2 Alabama (10-0), 11:21 a.m.: Can the Mocs of the Southern Conference slither into Tuscaloosa and bite the undefeated Crimson Tide? There’s a better chance of Nick Saban being honest about a prospective coaching job. … Bama 52-7.
Florida International (3-7) at No. 1 Florida (10-0), 11:30 a.m.: How about we spice this one up a bit and let Tim Tebow play for the Golden Panthers. The Gators will be remain unbeaten anyway, and the almighty quarterback will get some good practice against a real college defense. … Florida 49-10.
Oklahoma (6-4, 4-2 Big 12) at Texas Tech (6-4, 3-3), 11:30 a.m., FSN: I said before the season that the Red Raiders would win this game, but now I’m not so sure. Their offense is suddenly average, and it might not even score against an outstanding OU defense. But I have a strange feeling the Sooners’ struggles in Lubbock will continue, and Taylor Potts is long overdue for a breakout performance. … Tech 27-24.
Memphis (2-8, 1-5 Conference USA) at No. 24 Houston (8-2, 4-2), noon: For all they’ve accomplished this season, inexplicable losses at UTEP and Central Florida have the Cougars trailing SMU in the C-USA West Division. But this one should be cinch for Case Keenum and company. … UH 55-21.
Iowa State (6-5, 3-4 Big 12) at Missouri (6-4, 2-4), 1 p.m.: Both teams are bowl eligible, so this one really doesn’t mean much. Look for the Tigers to build on last week’s upset win against Kansas State with a convincing win at home. … Mizzou 38-17.
No. 4 TCU (10-0, 6-0 Mountain West) at Wyoming (5-5, 3-3), 1 p.m.: Last week’s game against Utah was the last remaining test for the Horned Frogs, who passed with flying colors. Could they be ripe for a letdown against the so-so Cowboys? It’s certainly possible, but I’m confident they’ll find a way to win. … TCU 34-21.
No. 16 Wisconsin (8-2, 5-2 Big Ten) at Northwestern (7-4, 4-3), 2:30 p.m.: The Wildcats handed Iowa its first loss only two weeks ago. Can they similarly stun the Badgers, who are locked in a three-way tie for second place? I vote yes. … Northwestern 23-16.
No. 14 Penn State (9-2, 5-2 Big Ten) at Michigan State (6-5, 4-3), 2:30 p.m., ABC: The Nittany Lions also are tied for second place in the Big Ten, and just like Wisconsin, they’ve got a potentially tricky road game. And since the Spartans are tied with Northwestern, I’ll go ahead and give them the edge, too. … Michigan State 35-31.
No. 8 LSU (8-2, 4-2 SEC) at Mississippi (7-3, 3-3), 2:30 p.m., CBS: The Tigers almost lost to Louisiana Tech last week, while the Rebels put a whipping on Tennessee. After some serious calculating, I’m guessing that adds up to a close win at home for the Rebels. … Ole Miss 31-28.
Baylor (4-5, 1-5 Big 12) at Texas A&M (5-5, 2-4), 2:30 p.m.: The Battle of the Brazos could very well determine last place in the Big 12 South, and both teams’ bowl hopes also hinge on the outcome. The Bears and Aggies both got stomped last week, but A&M seems to be a little better at bouncing back. … A&M 45-35.
Air Force (7-4, 5-2 Mountain West) at No. 22 BYU (8-2, 5-1), 2:30 p.m.: One of the nation’s best running games meets a high-flying attack led by Max Hall. I’ve got to give the nod to aerially inclined Cougars, but only because they’re at home. … BYU 28-21.
SMU (6-4, 5-1 Conference USA) at Marshall (5-5, 3-3), 3:30 p.m.: Because the Mustangs lost to Houston earlier this season, they likely need to win out to remain ahead of the Cougars in the West Division. They’re in great position to do so, but narrow wins over UTEP and winless Rice the last two weeks have me a little skeptical. … Marshall 35-27.
No. 25 California (7-3, 4-3 Pac-10) at No. 17 Stanford (7-3, 6-2), 6:30 p.m.: The Cardinal are 3-0 against ranked opponents this season, and they scored a combined 106 points in wins over then-No. 8 Oregon and then-No. 9 USC the last two weeks. After another win Saturday, Jim Harbaugh should be a lock for Pac-10 coach of the year. … Stanford 42-28.
Kansas State (6-5, 4-3 Big 12) at Nebraska (7-3, 4-2), 6:45 p.m., ESPN: The winner is the North Division champion, and it’s all or nothing for the Wildcats. A win makes them bowl eligible and puts them in the Big 12 title game, while a loss ends their season. Look for the latter to happen, but regardless, K-State coach Bill Snyder has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround. … Nebraska 24-17.
No. 11 Oregon (8-2, 6-1 Pac-10) at Arizona (6-3, 4-2), 7 p.m., ABC: The first-place Ducks control their own destiny in the Pac-10, but so will the Wildcats if they win this one. It’s already been wild and wacky out west, so why not create some more drama? … Arizona 41-38.
Kansas (5-5, 1-5 Big 12) at No. 3 Texas (10-0, 6-0), 7 p.m., ABC: With all the controversy swirling around Mark Mangino this week, the reeling Jayhawks could do one of two things: play their most inspired football of the season, or completely fall apart. I have a feeling the former will be the case, but it still won’t be enough to beat the undefeated Longhorns in Austin. … Texas 38-30.
Let the games begin!
