Tech notes: Dallas game near sellout
Next week’s Texas Tech-Baylor game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington is nearing sellout status, according to Dave Welsh, Tech’s assistant athletic director for ticket operations.
Welsh said a Dallas Cowboys representative said a few hundred remained Friday, and those were mostly scattered singles.
“I think all that’s left is basically singles on Ticketmaster,’’ Welsh said.
Somewhere between 65,000 and 70,000 tickets will be sold for the game, Welsh said, depending on how many Dallas Cowboys’ season-ticket holders retain their suites for the Nov. 28 game.
“Sales have gone really good,’’ Welsh said. “It’ll be a really nice crowd.’’
Sales for Tech’s home finale Saturday are slower with about 49,700 moved through Tuesday, Welsh said.
Receiver bumped to scout team
Jacoby Franks has been one of Tech’s top two at flanker all season, but he ran with the scout team at Tuesday’s practice.
“When you’re in the doghouse, as others have been, that’s where you go,’’ wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons said. “It’s a variety of reasons that I don’t really care to go into right now.’’
Instead of wearing his usual jersey No. 8, Franks was in No. 85, meaning he was simulating Oklahoma receiver Ryan Broyles for the Tech defense.
Franks has 24 catches for 294 yards this season, but had only one reception in Saturday’s 24-17 loss at Oklahoma State.
Simmons said Lyle Leong divided his time between split end and flanker in Tuesday’s workout, so it was starter Alex Torres and Leong at flanker, and Edward Britton, Leong and Brik Brinker at split end.
In Saturday’s loss, Torres and Britton delivered touchdown catches, but the group as a whole struggled with dropped passes and route-running errors.
“I fault myself, because they’re a direct reflection of me,’’ Simmons said. “If they’re not playing well, then obviously I’m not doing something right. I need to fix me in order to make sure that they’re fixed. That’s what we’re doing. We’re fixing each other right now.’’
Two starters out
Outside linebacker Marlon Williams and cornerback Jamar Wall didn’t practice Tuesday. At the end of the workout, Williams was in a protective boot, and neither he nor Wall were in pads.
Both got hurt late in Saturday’s game at Oklahoma State, Wall in a violent collision with OSU quarterback Zac Robinson.
If Wall were unavailable this week, senior Brent Nickerson would be the likely starter. He started nine games last year. There’s less experienced depth behind Williams, whose longtime backup, Blake Collier, quit the team earlier this season.
Sophomore Riley Harvey, who plays mostly on special teams, is listed as Williams’ backup now.
Other options might include senior Julius Howard, who has experience at weak-side linebacker, or moving Brian Duncan outside and having Sam Fehoko play middle linebacker. Duncan began his career at outside linebacker, but played the strong side. Williams plays the weak side.
Award list adds Sharpe
Tech defensive end Brandon Sharpe has been added to the Hendricks Award midseason watch list. Sharpe, a senior who played sparingly last year, is tied for second in the nation with 101/2 sacks.
The Hendricks Award goes to the nation’s top defensive end. The list will be trimmed to five or six finalists later in the season. The winner will be announced on Dec. 9.

that will be the last near sellout of a tech/baylor game at jerry’s world!
The thrill is gone!

i didnt think of that, but to be honest i see it very unlikely that me or any of my friends will be going to the game in the cotton bowl next year, even if it was in cowboys stadium again probably not. next thanksgiving we’ll want to all be with our families more. One year is fun, but I don’t see us as regulars.

Torres should be in the doghouse. This last was by far his worst game as a Red Raider.

If Wall does not play, we will be torched continuously thru the air. Remember the UT game last year and the one reason UT got back into that ballgame…Nickerson.

I bet 80 percent of the attendance at the Baylor game are people just wanting to see the Billion-Dollar Stadium.

The Tech Baylor game next year is on oct. 9th during the state fair. The game after Thanksgiving will be Houston in Lubbock.

Only 50,000 for a chance at payback on the arrogant Sooners. That’s pitiful!

And a lot of those will be yanks!

to eddie, I had the same thoughts about Nickerson playing this year, however in the playing time he’s had this year, he has been much improved. this season may have been much different without all the injuries we’ve had this year. we need to finish strong, and next year should be great.

all the recievers did not do well not just franks.
Alex had 4 receptions and a TD, third most for all of the receivers that game. He averages 5 a game.
franks had one catch and lots of dropped ones.

I’m not too impressed with this year’s receiving corps. Other than Detron Lewis, it seems to be a bunch of average receivers. Torres has played well at times but he has too many drops at critical times. Yes he catches passes really well but not when it’s really needed. He’ll improve and someone we can count on in the future but I just think some of our QB troubles is receivers who can’t get open or drop passes. I look forward to the two stud receivers from Florida coming in next year. They may not start next year but I’m sure they can push the rest of this receiver corps to be better.
Tech should be looking for blood after the debacle in Norman last year. I hope this team pours it on Saturday.

Watchdog you’re so ignorant. Get a life. Does your boss know you sit on the internet all day and blog about Texas Tech athletics? Or do you even have a job?

Just got word of this little tid bit…
“Baylor, being the home team, decided that alcohol would not be sold in the stadium. The stadium Club boxes and Suites will be the only place where alcohol will be served.”
So when Tech is the home team…do we keep all the beer revenue? We better not have to share it with them since they decided not to let us have the cut from Jerry’s Palace. All those people that bought tickets didn’t know this I am sure. Might as well be at Jones!

Home team or not, I can’t imagine Jerry going along with the no alcohol sales thing. I’ll believe it when I see it.

I will just have to bring my flask binoculars. good to know.
(Report comment)
Jerry will not allow binoculars in. You’ll have to BUY Cowboy versions of them there like everything else (food, drink, etc.). And they will not be hollow. Next probably have to go in nude and buy Jerry’s clothes there too!
