Tech notes: QB update

The depth chart that Texas Tech released Thursday for this week’s game at No. 17 Oklahoma State listed Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield as co-No. 1 at quarterback.

The two got all the snaps in the 11-on-11 team period of practice Tuesday and Wednesday, the Avalanche-Journal learned. The breakdown Wednesday, the last heavy practice day of the week, was about two-thirds to one-third in Potts’ favor, which is typical for how Tech coach Mike Leach breaks down the snaps between his No. 1 and No. 2 quarterbacks.

Sheffield’s workouts this week were his first since he underwent surgery for a broken bone in his left foot that he suffered Oct. 17 at Nebraska.

Mind on their business

Playing Oklahoma State this weekend in Stillwater, Tech not only has to deal with a ranked team but also a stadium setup at Boone Pickens Stadium that can easily distract visiting teams. The sidelines are such that fans are tight behind the visiting sideline.

Senior cornerback Jamar Wall remembers it from his last trip when the Red Raiders lost to the Cowboys 49-45 two years ago.

“I remember fans being right behind us, just talking so much trash it was ridiculous,’’ Wall said. “It’s like, you want to turn around and say something, but you can’t because it will make you lose focus and it will encourage them to keep going. So you just have to fight through it. If you just come out there from the start and put it on them, I don’t thnik they’ll be as hostile.’’

I’ve been to the games at Stillwater and must say that the OSU fans have got to be some of the friendliest fans I was ever around. Course I can’t say anything about what goes on right behind our team. Seems like their own security (OSU) could provide better crowd control like at a basketball bench area.

And, of course, the absolute worst fans I have ever been around is in Austin!!! Not only the student drunks but also the so-called adult fans can just be absolutely downright nasty and mean. I am an ex-Marine and got to serve in Nam and it just infuriates me that some drunk thinks by trying to pick a fight he is “winning one for the team”. What a jerk! And of course there has to be always a group of em as 4 or 5 or more! Don’t think I did not want to!! I’ve been around a few years and the closest I came to pounding somebody was the UH band in ‘76 as their fight- band actually marched up into the west side isles of our Jones stadium during the 3rd and 4th qtrs to play some of the Cougar fight song or whatever. Believe me I wanted to but it took all the restraint I had. That was just that year!
    .
The Whorns do em one better cause they are just down-right ugly in Austin each and every year!

Flash Lite, I’m glad there is a Raider Marine in the stands at UT. (Bring your friends.) The “adult” UT fans are a problem in and outside the stadium. They are a real embarrassment to an otherwise terrific city where the average Joe will give you the shirt off his back.
The only serious static from the Oklahoma State fans is usually directed at UT. And OU. (I don’t want to offend OK State fans by implying they go soft on OU just a day away from hosting Tech.) Like Tech, the OK State fans know the game is on the field for four quarters then it’s over. They have a lot more respect for the game than say, UT. I have a good time talking to OK State fans in the stands. I have so much family from Oklahoma that I always expect to sit down next to a cousin.

I agree about OSU and I have had great times at games at OU. As for Austin, nuff said here; the arrogance is real and pitiful.

By the way, Semper Fi Marine (Served as a Huey Gunship pilot with HML 167 out of Marble Mountain, RVN).

Does anyone know the rules on medical redshirt seasons? To my knowledge Sheffield played 2 1/2 games this year. Is it conceivable if he didn’t play again he could get this year of eligibility back?

good point. I mean if Jordan shiply can play 10 years at Texas then I don’t see why sticks couldn’t.
