Tech announces 2010 schedule

Just like this season, Texas Tech will play Texas in September again next season, according to a tentative 2010 football schedule the Tech athletic department released Wednesday.

The Red Raiders’ home game against the Longhorns will be on Sept. 18. Tech officials initially reported that ABC or ESPN will televise it, but Tech later removed the announcement from its Web site because ABC was still finalizing details.

“We are pleased with how this schedule fell into place,” Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said in a statement. “We were able to work some things out with our league schedule to accommodate a network opportunity, while also bringing our fans an attractive non-conference schedule as well.”

To make room for the Texas game in September, Tech officials said a scheduled game against TCU will be postponed to a later season.

The 2010 schedule has another twist: The Red Raiders will end the season with two consecutive non-conference games for the first time since the program joined the Southwest Conference in 1960. Tech will host Weber State on Nov. 20 and Houston on Nov. 27. The last time Tech played two non-conference games in November was 1964 against Washington State and West Texas State, now West Texas A&M.

weber state on 11/20 ?! please explain to me the imporatnce of playing a cream puff that late in the season. we’d be better off with a bye week. and how convienient that TCU has been “moved to a later season”. that would have been the best non-conference team we would have played, and a great look for the program and the conference.

BC we don’t want to play TCU at the end of the year at the risk of creating what could potentially be our only loss of the season and keep us from a BCS game or even the NC. Next year is a big opportunity for our program. UT will lose almost everybody and be rebuilding, as will OU and OSU. That leaves it up to us and TAMU for the South. I think this was a smart move because as we’ve seen before, if you go undefeated in the Big 12 South, you have a HIGH probability of going to the NC and you are almost guaranteed a BCS game.

Think the weber state on 11/20 will be televised? NOT!
That could have been Boise State and nationally televised with no cost to Tech’s athletic budget and a chance to fill the stands and make money to pay Leach’s high salary. How much is Weber going to COST us?

Looks like they threw the games in a hat and tossed it in the air…

All season ticket-holders may boycott that one. Probably a nice aftn for golf anyway . But placing UH as our last game. Somebody must have been on cool aid to even consider that!!! Bad Bad Bad decision!

“while also bringing our fans an attractive non-conference schedule as well.” What? Substitute Weber State for TCU? I know this was about money, and not about selling season tickets. Just another example of where Myer’s priorities are. Not selling season tickets, thats for sure. I have emailed him numerous times about questions or concerns without a response EVER. I have emailed KENT HANCE, our CHANCELLOR, and he has responded both times. Myers doesn’t care. Regardless of how this decision turns out, his true colors are showing. As a 3 year season ticket holder between the 40s on the west side, I am for the first time seriously thinking about getting rid of them. Its not worth it to see these sad teams. And my decision has nothing to do with us taking a step down this year. Our program’s future is bright and we can still make the Cotton Bowl, it just is hard to spend all that money to a place where the athletic director does not care one BIT about YOU or YOUR opinion. Why not run this by the program’s loyal fans/season ticket holders to see what the consensus is? Oh wait, that would mean he would care about what we think. The good news is is that in one of the recent, “Texas Techsan,” magazines I believe I read Bill Dean wrote that after all that contract squabbling last year with Leach that Myers was likely coming close to the end of his tenure. Thank God. Wreck Em.

Does not make any logic playing Weber at the end of the season, except for Weber that is. There is already time off before bowl game to heal injuries….only plus is game time practice for the following year players.

Wonder if we would really get in the top BSC game if we had such a schedule….And TCU would love to “prove” themselves once again (similar to what Boise State’s wanting).

That said, he truly makes very few decisions – certainly not the biggest ones. However, with regard to scheduling, I believe he DID make this one. The administration (University) generally gets a severe case of tired-head over that sort of thing and, thus, they leave it to him. It did not make sense to play Texas early this year (as far as being in the best interest of the football team). It does make sense to play them early next year. We will have more returning starters in key positions then them next year unlike this year. Things like that should go into the reasoning of a schedule.
BUT TECH PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE start scheduling teams that matter. I dont mean schedule a run through the SEC in nonconferance begining with Florida then Alabama, but stop scheduling teams that make people say (Do they have a football team, or when did they start playing sports). Maybe schedule a couple like SMU and New Mexico to get new players adjusted, but dont finish it with the Southeastern Westchester Northstars. Do the great minds that run this not get it that beating a team lke the Northstars is expected and you gain nothing from it but cheap ego, but losing or not blowing them out is an embarrassment. What looks better to polsters ( beating TCU or Boise State, or any decent team by 3 or beating Northeast southern christian university by 40. New mexico almost had us if we didnt have sticks come in, what would that of done to the season. Be more like the Fresno State Coach and Play anyone, any real sportsman would be willing to. GO TECH

From what I understand ABC pays $325K for TV rights, the lowest is Fox Sports @ $175K. So our wonderful brain trust in the AD dept did all this to make at best $150K more? All we would have to do to make more than that would be to fire a few of the 23+ asst/assoc ADs.

What a pitiful schedule. After the ut game on Sept 18th, we get two home conference games the rest of the year. I can’t believe Gerald is doing this on top already moving the Baylor game out.

How does Tech expect to keep someone like Leach around with stunts like the ‘10 schedule? Seems pablum is the order of the day, and Leach, no doubt, was never shown the menu – if indeed he was allowed a seat at the table.

On the other hand, the ’safety first’ attitude of TT’s administration reflects the culture surrounding it. To prevent hyperventilating itself breathing free air or polluting itself at the sight of reality, the very correct and self-ordained leadership of the school and broader community seems to have donned a bag as headgear. Even the hamburglar’s hat and mask permit more exposure, but then he’s mythical.
