Tech notes: Raiders host special guests
The Texas Tech sideline at Tuesday’s practice resembled the Champions Dinner at the Masters. But all the guys in green jackets were members of the Ropes Eagles’ varsity and junior varsity teams.
Ropes coach Lane Jackson said he brought over about 37 Eagles, counting players and ball boys. He said he brought Ropes’ team to a Tech practice eight or nine years ago.
“When I did it last time, we came back and practices were a lot better,’’ Jackson said. “They’d seen the best at their positions, and it helped practice and helped motivation-wise. The kids try to mimic the good things they saw in practice.’’
Ropes, which is 6-3 and 2-1 in District 4-IA six-man, is on its open week. Tech’s in-season practices are closed, so Jackson said he called and asked permission to visit several days in advance.
“The kids really enjoyed it,’’ Jackson said. “They’d say, I didn’t realize so-and-so was so big. They see them all the time on TV, but to see them at eye level … .
“Coach Ruffin (McNeill) came over and said, ‘Ropes is in the house!’ and shook the kids’ hands and was real personable with them. They liked that.’’
Injury update
Among those who didn’t practice Tuesday were safeties Will Ford and Brett Dewhurst and defensive end and special-teams player Jonathan Brydon, who was on crutches.
Ford and Dewhurst missed Saturday’s game against Texas A&M. Their absence creates some problems for the defense when circumstances call for six-defensive back packages, since both have played a lot in those schemes this year. When the Raiders went with six DBs Saturday, D.J. Johnson and Julius Howard were in.
