it was a poor metaphor but it makes sense. the metaphor could have been better articulated but it was said with passion and honesty. if you want to be politically correct, they read their press clippings. but when has Leach ever been pc?? isnt that what we like about him? there, does that make you feel better you have got to be kidding???? Leach isn’t even in the top 3-4 in $ for a B12 coach, much less top 10 in the country. leach has ttu as – about – the 25th best program in the country, while rarely recruiting that well b/c ut, ou and tamu have always recruited better. I read recently that ttu’s 2010 class is projected #21, the BEST in Leach’s history.

Coaches must say/do whatever it takes to motivate their players and if all he did was use the phrase “fat little girlfiriend”, that is completely harmless. We got soft. Fat girls are soft. Girls, like mommas, tell us what we want to hear. Coach Leach tells us the truth. I really do enjoy the truth. I get physically sick hearing Mack Brown tell us how every week that they are playing the best team in the world and that Colt McCoy is sick or hurt that’s why they are playing average. Remember, when dealing with kids, you have to get their attenion and Mike usually does. That’s my teams coach and I like him. These type of comments should be made to the players only, and they should be made before the game. The coach is the leader, and it’s up to him to get his players motivated. Like reminding them how bad it would feel to be the first team to lose to A&M at home in 15 years. It really looked like this team didn’t practice all week or no film of A&M was watched. The defense stayed in base all night despite the aggies bitting off big chunks of yardage every play. Penalties, dropped balls, ten yard cusions and so on and so forth. Leach talked all week about not taking anyone lightly in the Big 12, the results, however, show something else, and that’s on the coach.

All you people who get on Coach Leach about what he says, should have played football in the 70’s. If you did, you would know what a tough coach said to his players. What Coach Leach says is nice compared to what they said in those days and all of us turned out just fine. These young people now have it too easy. I say call it like it is. If they can’t handle it, then go play at Slippery Rock or some other place. If you keep the touchy feely thing going, they will never make it in life. I say get tougher on them.

Those of you still admiring Potts arm strength or feel that Potts can still run Coach Leach’s offense have not been attending the home games this year. Potts cannot make the defensive reads. The two back-ups, both with very limited experience I might add, do a far better job checking off receivers and throwing to the open receiver. Unfortunately for Potts, both back-ups are also known as teams leaders (a must for the QB position). That all being said, the defense (particularly at stopping the run) was awful. TTU must become successful at recruiting above average linebackers.

I find it amazing, when Tech was 10-0 last year, everything Leach said was fine, even if it was a little stupid. Start losing a few games, and all of the “fair weather” fans start complaining. Leach is still the best head coach Tech has had in very long time. I liked Spike, but he did not have the results Leach has had. Tech has still gone to more bowl games than any other Big 12 school, and that is saying something when most of our recruiting classes are the players who don’t go to the National programs and the bigger Texas schools. If people think Tech is going to ever win a National Championship in football, you are dreaming. OU beat us like we stole something, and Florida made Oklahoma look bad in the National Championship game last year, enough said. Leach is great, so is Tech and support your team through the good and the bad. The team was flat last weekend, who knows why, maybe the 21 point favorite was a problem. The players need to play every game the same, with intensity and not take any teams for granted, or you get thumped like we did by A&M.

Some of these comments are unreal. We have one of the best coaching staffs in the country and a program that is improving every year. Those guys should have been up for A&M just because it was A&M and I do not see how the coaching staff could have changed their mindset as per the Bird quote. By the way the “fat little girlfriends” statement WAS funny since they do tell you how good you are. I know, I married one 47 years ago and she thinks the comment is funny also.

FDRaider, it is not the job of a coach to motivate players. It is his job to have them ready and focused but not motivated. If you are not motivated to come out and play at home in front of a record crowd against an in state rivalry, then someone needs to check your pulse. Coach Leach should not have to be a cheerleader in the locker room to get these guys pumped, leadership needs to take care of that.

What those of you who support Leach’s comments fail to understand is that this isn’t about political correctness or motivation – it’s about respect for women and responsibility for your own actions. Would you have supported him if he referred to another aspect of these girlfriends, such as their ethnicity or hair texture? It’s easy to use “fat girlfriends” as a lame, convenient excuse for your own failure – they’re one of the few groups for whom it obviously remains politically correct and acceptable.

This kind of tough guy talk, in a feeble attempt to motivate his players, is what will also lead to their abusing and disrespecting those girlfriends who are going to be wrongly blamed by frustrated players. True coaches create young men who are community leaders, good citizens, and caring husbands and fathers…..not trash-talking, irresponsible, disrespectful jerks.

Not only did I see students act like classless clowns, which is actually every year, but I saw older Tech fans doing the same thing towards aggies as well as Tech students. I forgot to add that I am a Red Raider fan, win or lose. We have fun socializing, tailgating, and going to the games. We stay to the end, whether it’s a bitter loss or an exciting win! I think it is sad that Mike Leach cannot just accept responsibility for his poor coaching skills. I bet he was a bully growing up! I wonder how he would feel if someone were speaking about one of his daughters that way, or maybe he wouldn’t care, maybe he’s as much a father as he is a coach. By that I mean maybe while his “little” girl was crying her eyes out about being insulted he would just tell her it was probably just someones way of getting her boyfriend motivated! Personally, as long as Texas Tech continues to employ Coach Leach my son will not be allowed to even consider Texas Tech as a college choice.

Leach just like Obama —Taught in law school direct attention away from yourself and blame the other person. Look it up in TT media guide, where did Leach play football, maybe junior high, said this coaching is a lot harder than you think after the A&M game, it darn sure is when you have never played it and ask someone to do something you have never done. Has a gimmick offense, any time TT plays a physical team and I don’t mean UT, they get their rears kicked. Re Ole Miss, A&M this past Saturday. It will be a great day for Tech when he is gone. Truth is no other school wants him.

I blame Mike Leach’s “fat little wife’. What a crappy thing for me to say. It’s not her fault it his, he is the coach not her. If the players didn’t play well it is his fault and not his wifes or their girlfriends, cop out Mike Leach. Shut your mouth, coach out the season and pray for some other University to come calling on you so we can send you down the road as a lack of class person. I would suggest to my son or daughter if he were considering Tech to consider another University just because of their support for such a lack of class coach. Ms Leach, I apologize for using you in some manner to make a point about your husband. Please do what you can to help him see the error of his ways.

I find it amazing that with all of the issues teenage girls face concerning their weight and appearance, it is perfectly acceptable by so many ‘fans’ that Coach Leach made this comment. It has nothing to do with the game – if he has a problem with his players and their girls that’s fine and he should address it. However, to call them out in public and refer to them in such a way shows lack of class and manners. Struggling with weight issues is no laughing matter and to turn it into such is unfair – I don’t know which of these girls he is referring to but I do know I have a 16 year old who is constantly checking her weight and wearing clothes that ‘don’t make her legs look fat’ – at 5′3, she weighs about 115. As adults, it is our responsibility to keep children’s focus and motivation moving in a positive direction; there is no reason to launch personal attacks to motivate your players – there has to be another way.

Mike Leach’s comment made sense? It was just a bad metaphor?

For one thing, the phrase “fat little girlfriends” isn’t a metaphor. He’s just simply calling people names like a spoiled 5-year-old would.

And yes, it’s offensive that he’s called his players’ girlfriends fat (meaning obese) and little (meaning insignificant, not worthy of note). Sexist, condescending, belittling. Definitely, in the abstract. Though I don’t think Leach meant any women in particular; he probably doesn’t even know his players’ girlfriends.

What’s most offensive about this comment is that Coach Leach is letting his players, and himself, off the hook. Again. It’s not the players’ fault they can’t get motivated. It’s not their fault that they’re lazy, that TTU football players have never and may never be consistent on the football field. No, it’s not their fault, or even their coach’s fault. Hell, no, it must be the women in the stands. It’s our fault.

Nice.

Get a grip, Coach Leach. Do your job. Tell your players to do their jobs. The jobs you’re all being paid handsomely to do. And when you lose in an embarrassing fashion again, step up and be a real man and take blame yourself.

Red Raider Football needs to concentrate on the matters at hand every game and every week and win the rest of the games this season.
The Red Raider Fans need to support the team and not abandon the stadium when we are losing no matter how bad the score.
The Red Raider Fans need to not be belligerent to other fans especially those of the opposing team.
Respect is earned. We need to earn it and then maintain it.

As a Tech alumni, I can tell you that Tech was given zero national respect or even national notice before Coach Leach arrived. When they won the occasional game against a ranked Texas or A&M, they might mention it as a monumental upset. Then Tech would lose to Sewanee Tech in the next game. In general, I believe they are treated fairly well in the national press now. They pretty much treat Leach as a standup comedy act, while at the same time admiring what he has done in Lubbock with less than elite talent. He finds guys that can throw and other guys that can catch and teaches everyone how to play the game his way. When he does get the top flight kids, he tries to get them to play within the system and still reach their full potential. Crabtree managed to get it. Some of the guys now haven’t realized they need to listen to him instead of being on twitter or being talked up by their friends and/or girlfriends.

I’m sure there is more to this story than we know and that Leach is probably calling out particular players and their girlfriends in his statements. He is definitely not politically correct

As far as the people saying, “My kid won’t go to Tech as long as Leach is there!”, it is probably not a huge loss. Generally schools with entertaining football teams get more press and more students attending. It is just a bonus if the teams actually win a lot of games. So, mothers with scale challenged little girls will keep their kids away from Tech. Maybe fathers with 6 foot 4 split ends that can run a 4.3 will send them to school there and we will end up at a breakeven on the numbers.

Mike Leach is a small man. Small men do not take responsibility for their actions. Instead of saying “we weren’t ready” or “we did thusandsuch wrong” he had to find someone else to blame for his shortcomings.

People like that don’t last in most jobs.

Weren’t you looking to leave Lubbock last year Coach Leach? What happened, no takers?

As for where that posters child goes to college – unless at 18 he can finance his education all by himself his parents will have a lot of say in where he goes.

I personally don’t give a rat’s a$$ whether Tech wins or loses. But Lubbock is a small place trying to grow and negative press about one of the largest institutions doesn’t help.
