Sheffield out two to three weeks with foot injury

The law of averages seems to have finally caught up with Texas Tech coach Mike Leach’s quarterbacks.

After not having a quarterback miss a start for injury in at least 12 years, Leach is about to have it happen twice in less than a month.

Texas Tech quarterback Steven Sheffield, center, took some punishment during Tech's win over Nebraska on Saturday, like when Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh, left, hit him with Larry Asante looking on. Sheffield injured his foot in the game, and will miss at least the next two games.

The Avalanche-Journal has learned Tech quarterback Steven Sheffield will be out at least two to three weeks with a foot injury he suffered in Saturday’s 31-10 victory at Nebraska. Sheffield had a medical procedure performed Sunday on the foot he was limping around on at the end of the game.

He’s expected to miss home games the next two Saturdays, against Texas A&M and Kansas before Tech has an open date. The earliest he’s likely to return is for a Nov. 14 road game at Oklahoma State.

Tech does not disclose information on the nature or severity of injuries.

“Tech has no comment,’’ media relations director Chris Cook said.

At his weekly Monday news conference, Leach said his quarterback choice this week would be a game-time decision.

If so, it might actually be between Taylor Potts and third-string Seth Doege. The call will go to Potts if team medical staff believe he has recovered sufficiently from the concussion he suffered Oct. 3 in a 48-28 win over New Mexico.

That set off a chain of forced shakeups behind center that Leach has never encountered at Tech. For that matter, he never had a quarterback miss a start in 1999 at Oklahoma or in 1997-98 at Kentucky. His good fortune with quarterbacks dated at least to his tenure at Valdosta State from 1992-96.

Potts practiced throughout last week, then suited up Saturday and took snaps with the full offense in pre-game warmups.

Sheffield played the entire game at Nebraska, finishing 23 of 32 for 234 yards. He threw for one touchdown and scored twice on quarterback sneaks, the second on Tech’s last offensive play.

The junior from Pflugerville Connally has completed 76 of 102 — 74.5 percent — for 1,014 yards, 12 touchdowns and two interceptions. Nearly all of that came in the last 2 1/2 weeks, which included his first career starts, against Kansas State and Nebraska.

Potts started the first five games and has 1,817 yards on 159-for-235 passing. He has thrown 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.

    URGENT MESSAGE! Please read…

All kidding aside, there are rumors going around that there is chance that Florida and Alabama could end up playing for the National Championship. Basically, the argument is that the BCS has them both ranked so much higher than Texas and the rest of the teams that even if they play for the SEC Championship(which they will), they could end up playing again for the National Title. Meanwhile, Texas has to stay undefeated and win more convincingly. We could perhaps afford to lose one game at the most, but either way at the end of the regular season, we need to have defeated as many ranked teams as possible. The more the better Texas looks in the eyes of the BCS people. So, we need you Tech to win the rest of your games and win big to ensure you get ranked in the BCS poll and stay there. The same goes for O-State, Kansas, and perhaps OU. Only then could Mack Brown make a compelling case to get Texas the BCS nod to play in Pasadena against either Florida or Alabama. So, we need Tech and the rest of these Big 12 teams ranked and winning so that Texas gets to play for the National Championship and bring the trophy back to Texas where it belongs. Right?

Wow, really! Sheffield has done a great job. But this is kind of funny. Potts goes out with a concussion, then Sheffield shines, now the roles are reversed. Tickles me to see a whorn wanting us to help them out. Maybe y’all should’ve thought about that about 500 troll posts ago. The only reason the rumors are flying around about Florida playing Bama is because UT is a distant 3rd in terms of quality. Don’t know why, but any fool can see UT isn’t the team they were last year. Why they would want to go to the NC game and get humiliated is beyond me. Maybe they ought to stick with Ohio St where they belong. Or one of the other undefeated but not very good teams like Boise State.

Its nice to see tech play as a team on both sides of the ball, makes me think of the days when tech’s defense was pretty tough when we had a linebacker named Zach Thomas. With a few breaks we definetly could have been undefeated this season but as in life it happens. Now everyone knows when you plat Texas you have to play the refrees as well. Its sad to see a UT fan in our website asking and begging for our teams help to make them look good. I thought you should be judged by your merit not your crying and begging. Of course you must of followed the Mck Brown 10 steps of cry, whine, beg, plead, lobby, and make excuses to make yourself look better, oh can we forget how to bail your players out of jail prior to a game
so if you want to look good actually get some class and a coach who can coach and not be a lobbiest, hell you sure hes not a congressman? anyway i am proud of our team, hope they beat the dreaded aggies and continue to improve.

If he truly was a gamer, like Sticks, we would’ve beat both UT and UH when we had ample opportunity. But we did not. He gets the job done for a 7 and 5 team, but Sticks OR DOEGE! go to 12 and 2. I’d love it if Potts could get us there and hope he does, but I would not bet on it. What I’d bet on tho is the Pirate will leave him in long enough to nearly embarrass us against the Ags and probably lose in the 4th with Kansas just agonizingly like at UH. Please go with the hot hand Coach Leach and if Potts stumbles after 3 or 4 drives please don’t get brain-locked on us and get DOEGE in there. We are a blessed team with several good QB’s. But just you wait til Scotty Ryan gets here and Doege grads – ooh – the field won’t be long enough for opponents and our stadium won’t hold enough people!!!

A&M has everything to prove and nothing to lose at this point. This is one of those trap games. I stated the same before Tech played Houston. This week has an eery similar feel to it.

This is one of those weeks that is real coaching challenge. Tech coming off a big win and being ranked for the first time this year. Starting QB gets hurt. A&M is reeling from a disappointing blow-out loss and is ready to prove something. Our Red Raiders better come out swinging their swords!

If Tech plays the way they have the past two weeks, they win by three TDs. If they revert back to a level of play as in Houston or New Mexico, you’ll see an upset.

This week will be an opportunity for Potts to redeem himself. And you know that he knows that! He has seen how the team rallies around Sheff and how their support seems to swing in Sheff’s way. But the main thing to remember is that Potts started the season as the starter! There is a reason for that. If Leach didn’t think he was capable then he wouldn’t have received the starting nod. Potts is going to come out and make things happen. He has been practicing hard and he knows there is a lot rinding on this. As Red Raider fans, we should all get behind our QB and our team. One guy doesn’t win a game. It takes a team effort….we’ve shown this year that we are capable and we can do it! Go TECH!

1st Potts, then Stick’s and now Doege. If we want to keep this going, I say give the ball to Seth. Nothing against Taylor but just cannot move in pocket. Leach has good eye for quarterback’s and Seth signed for a reason and the time is now.

Get well soon Sticks, and I truly hope that Taylor Potts is healthy enough to play and if he does the offensive line can protect him and he makes good decisions also, we are lucky to have good backups , L each will make sure that they are ready, theyll have to be considering Techs and A.M s history, makes no difference how bad they got beat last week Ill bet they will be up for Tech, Seth Doedge gives us a good backup also be ready to play , guys.. GUNS UP !!!!

Wrong! Alabama and Florida are so much better than that rag-tag team Texas has this year that I would rather see them play twice than see an undeserving TU team play in the NC. Heck, I’d rather see SEC vs. USC. You barely beat Tech, in Austin, and that was pre-Sheffield and minus a healthy Baron Batch. You barely beat OU minus their two best players. TU & Boise State are the most over ranked teams in the country right now. There’s no way you are going to get through the rest of the schedule.

It Potts is not 100%, we should go with Doege. Because Potts does have some strange looking mechanics, you can bet that he is being coached about it ……… and that has probably been most of his trouble. He is thinking about mechanics instead of just playing the position. Tech beats Aggie and Jayhawk regardless of who plays QB, and that gives us plenty of time to have the best man for the job ready to go for oakie lite. GUNS UP !

How would Texas getting cremated in the National Championship help the Big 12 look better? Have you not seen Texas this year? Let’s see, struggled with Wyoming up until the half, stuggled with Colorado until the half, struggle with unranked TTU the entire game (sorry, it wasn’t a blow out UT fans, despite you bragging about the net with the video that vividly shows a helmet to helmet penalty that didn’t get called), struggled with a #20 ranked OU & only managed to pull out a 3-point victory because Bradford was out for 3 quarters. Don’t worry, Texas, your days are limited at the top, despite whether or not Tech wins, and then you can go back to doing what you do best, have your boy Mack “make a compelling case to get Texas the BCS nod “. When did crying become a part of college football?

My prediction, OSU settles this unsettled Texas teams’ over-rating.

Getting back to football – this weekend is an extremely dangerous game for Tech. A&M is on a three game slide and ripe for a good rebound game just like KSU bounced back after the Tech thrashing.

Sheffield can’t play so Potts is our guy. We will find out how resilent Potts is coming off a concussion and benching (NU game). Sometimes a break like he has had pays huge dividends. Other times it destroys the athletes confidence. We’ll see this weekend.

A&M is a rival and badly wants to beat Tech since we’ve owned them the past decade.

THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS GAME FOR TECH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that Potts is going to suprise a lot of people this Saturday. He has a point to prove, and that is that he won the starting QB job at the biggining of the season. He was doing fine until he got helmet butted by Kindle in the TU game. I feel that Potts has had plenty of time to clear his head. Tech is superior to A&M on all 3 sides of the ball. Tech will handle A&M with no problem. I am usually afraid to talk like this before an A&M game but we are playing in the Jones, and Tech has a very talented team again this year. Those are two things that the present day Aggies can not handle. This is only a dangerous game if you let yourself believe it is. As Leach often states “we need to go out there and just worry about doing our job”.

everybody who hates mack brown please raise their hand. damn that man gets on my nerves and i know that he is going to do the things that everybody says he is which is crying to the BCS committee about how his team should be in the title game and ponyboy should be the heisman winner. like TTU Raider said, when did crying become part of college football? I most certainly hope that texas does get upset by someone on their schedule so we dont have to see crybaby mack doing his whining on tv. I would rather watch something more interesting like Celebrity Death Match.

Leach should have never gigged the Aggies about their injured QB (last year). Now he has two injured QBs. Good chance that Potts is not going to be right. Hand off, run the football and beat the Ags.

I agree with you East Techsan. Tech is better than A&M on all sides of the ball. However, the best team doesn’t always win. The team that plays the best wins. I believe Tech is better than Houston. I remember when a better Tech team lost to Navy because Navy played better. I also remember when Tech beat a better Texas team several years back when Kingsbury was the QB.

If A&M plays like they did against OSU and Tech plays like they did against New Mexico, A&M may well win the game. As Coach leach says, if Tech goes out and worries about doing their job (and actually does so), we win w/ whoever starts at at QB, but it is a dangerous trap game none-the-less.

This sounds crazy, but I’m more concerned with the A&M game this year than KU. Too many variables to discuss here, so will sign off. Looking forward to discussing a big win this weekend!

A light bulb just flashed on in Potts’ head. It’s the miraculous, healing promise of redemption against A&M. He’ll be there all right, throwing off his front foot. And Rev. Carter will be in the pulpit giving a sermon his line mates can tell their grandkids about. They’ll be busy on all of those draws, counters and screen plays Leach will call between homeruns.

As for the defense, they are probably camped at the 40 yard line waiting for kickoff. Talk about a 12th man, it’ll look like 15 or 16 out there on Saturday.

Special teams: there are strangers in the house. Sick ball! Erxleben: take an extra step, make the Muttleys run and fetch.

Fans: It’s Halloween and the Aggies will be wearing the masks, so let them know how normal people feel about them. Do it for Rodney Allison, do it for all of the vandalism A&M feels entitled tp leave behind in Lubbock, and for still believing that Tech isn’t good enough to be in THEIR conference. Oh, and for hiring “The Village People” as cheerleaders.

Win the game so that when Texas loses two down the line Tech will go to the championship game. Because right now, Texas Tech is the best team in the Big 12.

Figures…we get a little momentum and this happens. One of two things will happen: (1) Potts realizes he’s a marked man and plays lights out; or (2) Potts realizes he’s a marked man, panics, and forces too many throws resulting in a very poor performance, multiple INTs, and Heaven forbid, a loss. He just needs to realize that there are more receivers than just Swindall and Leong. Make your reads, spread it out, and dominate! OL, keep em clean!

Tech needs to worry more about the O-Line injuries rather than the QBs’. With a weak O-Line you’re going to need a lot more back ups at QB and not all back ups will be as good as Sticks is.

Tech has a great defense and a real good offense with Sheffield. Potts has no pocket awareness or mobility, but he can throw the ball pretty well. Tech should hang on the next two games with Potts making smart decisions and not forcing anything. Sheffield gets back by OK State game and we should win out. BTW if Sheffield starts the season, Tech is undefeated and going to BCS bowl if not the Nat. Championship. Ruffan is doing a fantastic job with the defense. Got em running to the football and making plays.
