Tech notes: Four starters out of practice

Three Texas Tech starters — center Shawn Byrnes, defensive end Daniel Howard and safety Cody Davis — missed Tuesday’s practice recuperating from injuries.

Byrnes, Davis and Howard being out was in addition to the expected absences of quarterback Taylor Potts (concussion) and cornerback Nathan Stone (spinal injury), who both suffered severe injuries in Saturday’s 48-28 victory over New Mexico.

Byrnes and Davis were in protective boots. Howard has left each of the last two games with what appeared to be stingers.

The three did conditioning work inside the Tech football building while their teammates were on the field. They could be considered questionable for Saturday’s game against Kansas State since Tuesday and Wednesday are the team’s two heavy practice days of the week and players who miss those workouts often don’t play.

Tech does not disclose information on the nature or severity of injuries.

On a favorable note for the Red Raiders, safety Franklin Mitchem appears close to a return after he missed the last three games. Mitchem is practicing in pads for the second week in a row.

Ticket update

About 5,000 tickets remain for Saturday’s Tech home against Kansas State, according to Dave Welsh, Tech assistant athletic director for ticket operations. All are priced at $55.

About 47,800 have been sold.

About 48,600 have been sold for the next home game after that, the Oct. 24 date with Texas A&M. That’s the first game for which Jones AT&T Stadium’s new northeast and northwest upper-level sections will be opened.

Welsh said about 10,400 tickets remain for the A&M game, all priced at $95. Workers are busy this week putting seat numbers on the new metal bleachers, Welsh said. He said they will bring capacity between 58,800 and 59,000.

News flash chopper. ( i think in england that means penis lover.) ut is not as good as you would think, just wait and when it does happen that they receive a much needed annihilation i hope that you crawl back under that pile of bull crap from which you came from. That game in austin was only a few dumb mistakes away by our coaching staff and we would have walked out of there with a win. unless of course the refs had something to do with it. I may be a little optimistic but, we can still win the big 12 south division, and some kid called “sticks” is gonna take us there.

Chopper must be unemployed. Sad. Red Raiders are young-and will continue to improve. They will compete for big 12 championship next year. Poor chopper-maybe he will be employed in 2011.

I believe Tech will protect their home field this weekend against KSU. Tech’s story this year is about youth and inexperience. Tech barely loses to #2 UT in Austin, a game that Tech had numerous chances to win but could not capitalize. The same story repeated itself the following weekend to #17 Houston. Funny how Tech is unranked after 2 losses to Top 20 teams while OU, who opened their season with a loss to #20 BYU and just came off a loss to #17 Miami is still ranked in the Top 20. Just goes to show how much bias is in the ranking system.

Now, if you want to ask me who is the better team between Houston and Tech, I’d still pick Tech. Houston barely won the head to head match up on their home field. Then they lose the next weekend by 17 points to a UTEP team who lost to UT in Austin 64-7 (a team Tech had numerous chances to beat on their own field).

What is frustrating watching this year’s Tech team is knowing just how talented they are and falling short in 2 really close games. The thing I’m watching for is not how many wins we end the season with because once you lose one game then the big dream of a title is out of the question. However, does this team learn and improve week to week? Are there signs of obvious growth? With only 4 games under our belt it’s hard to say.

The thing that excites me is thinking about the next couple of years as the overwhelming majority of this year’s team will be back next year (and especially thinking about how UT will lose most of their team & have to play us in Lubbock. Plus, UH won’t lose most of their team and we get them in Lubbock.)

    Wreck’em!

chopper knows chopper is an idiot and the remainder of us, whatever “the remainder” is, agree. chopper’s an idiot. Now, as to chopper’s case for the Red Raiders’ pending “mediocrity”. Just about any ‘Horn alive would strive for the Red Raiders to wallow in “mediocrity”. What they don’t consider is the probability that “they” don’t probably realize as much as “they” should, for “their” own good, Mike Leach and Company would undoubtedly resign, not be forced to resign, once they were convinced that only “mediocrity” was attainable…………at Texas Tech University, and such. I do the very BEST I can in ignoring the ‘Horns and pitying the ‘Ags. Frankly, one is much the same as the other…………….whomever “they” are! In keeping with the above stated guideline requesting that I keep to the subject matter at hand, the three to four injured, ailing players will get better and return. Mike Leach’s Staff will be sure of that, chopper. nmredraider1 in Albuquerque
