Carter reinstated, Potts doubtful for Saturday
Texas Tech offensive guard Brandon Carter spent Saturday suspended and in the stands at Jones AT&T Stadium, watching his teammates play New Mexico.
This weekend, he could be back in his old spot, and not a moment too soon with the number of players who got hurt in the Red Raiders’ 48-28 victory over UNM. Carter was reinstated to the team seven days after Tech coach Mike Leach classified him as indefinitely suspended.
He returned to practice Sunday night for the first time in more than a week.
The Avalanche-Journal learned Carter was suspended after Tech’s Sept. 19 loss at Houston for an outburst that included smashing his helmet and loudly criticizing the coaching staff.

Meanwhile, Tech quarterback Taylor Potts and backup corner-
back Nathan Stone were discharged Sunday after spending the night at Covenant Medical Center, a Covenant spokesman said.
The Avalanche-Journal has learned that Potts is doubtful for Saturday’s 6 p.m. home game against Kansas State, meaning it’s likely that junior Steven Sheffield will get his first career start.
Potts suffered a concussion Saturday when he was sacked twice in a span of three plays in the second quarter. Stone, a senior from Roosevelt, suffered a spinal injury after he took a knee to the helmet making a tackle on a third-quarter kickoff.
Tech coach Mike Leach rarely acknowledges even obvious player injuries, let alone discloses information about them.
Sheffield led the team to touchdowns on the first four series he played against New Mexico, and said he’ll be ready to go again when needed.
“I’m going to watch just as much film as anybody else,’’ Sheffield said. “When coach Leach is telling us the game plan for the week, I’m going to be taking notes and seeing what I need to do. The game plan we were told about what New Mexico does, they do exactly what we thought they did, and it worked out well. Kansas State’s a good opponent, but I’m ready.’’
Sheffield began his Tech career as a preferred walk-on after he led his Class 4A Pflugerville Connally team to state semifinals in 2004 and 2005. He earned a scholarship this year.
Though he’d made only two career game appearances before Saturday, he took advantage of the chance, leading the Red Raiders from a 7-7 tie late in the second quarter to a 35-7 lead. He wound up completing 16 of 23 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns.
Leach said the entire team fed off Sheffield’s energy.
“That’s the thing that coach Leach compliments me on a lot is bringing tempo to the whole unit and getting everybody excited to play,’’ Sheffield said. “That’s how I’m going to do whether we’re in practice … or come game time.’’
Though he got off to the hot start and wound up being part of six scoring drives, Sheffield hit a rough patch when, on consecutive series, he lost a fumble at the Tech 16-yard line, threw an interception for a touchdown and had a three-and-out.
“I did a lot of stupid things,’’ he said. “I created my own pressure a few times. That fumble, not having two hands on the ball, was just stupid. We just stalled three drives in a row when we shouldn’t have. We have more ability than that. We should have scored every drive, like we did the first (four).’’
Tech also lost center Shawn Byrnes and safety Cody Davis on Saturday, but their injuries are not thought to be serious.

Good to hear. I also hope Potts gets well soon. But Sticks seems to have the mobility we need with our OL not being what we are used to. And I wonder if Potts has gotten over the HELMET to HELMET non call from the UT game. He sure hasn’t been the same since.

Good job Redraiders . You beat A team that you were suppose to beat . That’s what good teams do . I hope Potts does not lose his confidence . Good job .

Sticks starts against Kansas State. If he runs the offense the whole game as good as the 3rd quarter this past week he stays the starter. Potts needs to sit out a week and only used in emergency situations. Get the cobwebs out. Go as long as you can with Sticks. Potts can then take over if Sticks stumbles and visa versa. A good two quarterback situation to be in. Just let Potts rest and get his witts about him
Get well Potts.

I am sure that the helmet to helmet hit at Texas affected Taylor in the Houston game he did not seem to be moving around as quickly as before. I hope that he is able to recover quickly, but ,please, make sure he has fully recovered before he is put back in to action. It was very exciting to see Sheffield come in and provide a fast pace, His ability to move around is very good since our offensive line does not seem to be as strong as last year. It will be a big bonus to have two quarterbacks as gifted as these two. Experience will help both of them. Looking forward to more wins.

Carter was suspended for smashing his helmet and speaking loudly about the coaching? Really? Down here a felony is more likely to get you a slap on the back (not the wrist) from Mack Brown. Surpised that Dan Beebe didn’t jump in and try to suspend Carter for the season. Beebe’s expected negligence in the Kindle matter not withstanding, there are reports that Kindle’s attempt to cripple Potts was not appreciated by some of his teammates. And some of the Longhorn parents apparently are concerned for kids safety in the football dorm whatwith Brown’s tin ear about the law. A lot of you reading this may not be aware of it, but Austin police and Austinites in general have had it up to here with Mack and his thugs. They are a threat to public safety, not just to private citizens but other UT students.
Take care of the head as long as you need to, Taylor and Nathan. There are fans and coaches at, ahem, other schools who consider players to be disposable items, but surely not at Tech. Everyone wants you and all of the players to have a good life beyond college. We also need all the (clear-headed) help we can get out here in the real world.

I was hoping that Carter had been suspended for failure to block anybody.
He should have been mad at his own performance. However I agree that there never should have been 4 plays in a row that called for him to block for their success.

TTU being a system thing should have two QB’s rotating. It doesn’t matter who the starter is. They should go with whoever sparks the team. This offense is only about being able to throw a football well which 1000’s of young football players do.
The QB position is not that important.

Garyout is right. Im sure that people who are getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars, whose job it is to watch out for the safety of the kids, overlooked something. All the medical personnel on the staff who are responsible for the kids well being must have missed it. Maybe you, a fan who has no knowledge or background of the situation, should be in charge….

I am still wondering why the Big 12 did not even acknowledge the Sergio kindle hit on Taylor Potts. I ask this, In a severely prone position as Taylor Potts was in that play, and he being 6′5″, and kindle having a clean hit on Taylor, wouldnt it make more sense to go for the ball? That right there clearly showed his intentions. Dont be suprised if something happens to Mr. kindle sometime soon.

Voice of Austin: How about some sportsmanship? It is always disconcerting to see a player take a hit like Potts did from Kindle in the Texas game. Legal hit or not it was brutal and had the potential to cause serious injury. The fact that you would brag about that does not speak well of you as a person. And I guarantee that if the situation was reversed you would be the first person complaining about an unfair hit on McCoy. It is not good to see ANY player take a hit like that.
Having said that, we Red Raiders need to move past the Kindle hit and look to the future. Let’s not be like the Longhorns who can’t let go – why are they even on this message board? It has nothing to do with them.
Great that Brandon Carter is back – THANK YOU Coach Leach!! Sticks seems to have a great attitude about learning from mistakes and has a genunine love for the game. Hope he is able to spark our team with his energy again on Saturday.
Hope Taylor Potts gets well soon – although I hope we don’t automatically put him back in the starting position. Let’s see how this plays out with Sticks and go with the best man for the team.
Also hope Nathan Stone is okay, we haven’t heard much about him. Anyone heard how Shawn Byrnes and Cody Davis are doing?

A Powerhouse Huh??? WOW….. you know your #2 ranked longhorns are such a “Powerhouse” that they played the likes of Univerity of Louisanna Monroe, Wyoming, and UTEP!!! Whohoo!! Man I would be proud to call my team a “Powerhouse” after playing teams like that!! Get real man…… That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard in quite a while. If your team is such a “Powerhouse” then they should be playing REAL teams in Non-Confrence games. Ohio State amungst many others are what you call “Powerhouses” because they actually play good teams in their Non Conference games.
As far as the hit on Potts in the UT game…… Yeah I thought it was a cheap shot, but as usual in Austin we DONT EVER get the calls. And we won’t ever get the calls. Heck even when we beat UT last season here in Lubbock the refs tried to let the Longhorns win the game at the end. Chalk it up to another great called game by the UT ref-ing crew.
Potts being affected by that hit in the Houston game I really didn’t see. I thought that he played his 2-best games of the year in both of the losses actually. I think that Tech didn’t come to play this past weekend at New Mexico, and the line just got whooped all day long. They are the ones to blame for Potts injury. We need to improve the play of our big boys on the OL and then our team will improve. Until then……. We will keep edging out victories.
WRECK EM TECH…….SCARLET AND BLACK FOREVER!!!!!

Don’t mean to say I told you so, BUT I told you so!!! Carter called the coaches out and “Coach” Leach’s ego got hurt.. Poor boy… I agree that Carter should have been suspended for “tearing up” the locker room, but everyone on the team should have been mad about the play calling, and especially about their failure to execute, It’s a team effort but “no block” Carter should be ashamed of his performance. Why was he singled out and not the whole offensive line?
Sincerely hope the two boys that got hurt- Potts and Stone- get better. Head injuries take a long time to heal (if ever). Tech should not jeopardize those boys future and play them until they are fully healed.
Tech needs to stay with Sheffield as long as he is successful. The QB is the most important position on the team. He sets the example for the whole team to follow. Casper– you obviously never played or don’t understand the game very well.
Watching the game Saturday night only confirmed my feelings about the defense- Tech has a very poor one. Is it the Coaches or the kids? I don’t think it’s the talent– only the application of the talent and the coaching of that talent that is to blame.

I’m glad to see Carter back. He’s definitely a value add on the line. He’s a great on and off the field and he wants to play, and win. I was excited to see him in the stands taking pictures with the fans and supporting the Raiders while not playing. He could have easily stayed at home…..
The hit on Potts was a cheap shot. If the roles were reversed and it was a TTU defensive player laying the wood on Colt McCoy it would have been ruled Helmet to Helmet. Heck, our player would have probably been suspended. Take a look at the hit Tebow took last week. That was a clean hit. If you can’t see the difference between the two then you need to quit watching football, and quit talking out your butt.
Sticks is needed while our O-Line gels. He provides the necessary pocket movement to “buy” time for our receivers to get open. The swagger of Sticks is also needed. When he stepped into the offense, we suddenly looked like the Typical Air Raid offense we have all been accustomed to. He was slinging the ball all over the place and seemed like he was having fun while doing so. The kid has wheels! That’s right, a few scrambles outside the pocket and those safeties will start to creep up and then its time to stretch them vertically. I think Sticks is the right fit for the Offense at this point in time.
Potts will be back soon, but until our O-Line starts playing like a unit I don’t think he should play. Potts makes all of the throws, but reminds me of Drew Bledsoe. Big, Tall, Strong Arm, Can take a hit, but is a pocket style QB with very little mobility. I also think that the shotgun formation may be hindering Pott’s throwing mechanics, more specifically throwing off his back foot. He’s getting the ball from the shotgun snap and often starts dropping backwards, and starts his throwing motion while moving backwards. This will make a QB float the ball short. The purpose for the shotgun snap is to give a QB an instant scan of the field with out having to drop. I think Potts will be a great QB, but I don’t believe this is the proper time to insert him into the system, unless of course we change to under center strong formation.
I already see it now, Jeffers will be more dynamic than CrabTree. And Jeffers please sign when you make it to the next level! :) Defiantly a play maker. I look forward to seeing more from him for the next few years. Its going to be great!
Which leaves me with one final thought…. why on earth didn’t we continue to run on UH. UTEP hung 300+ yards on them. We discovered the UH weakness, but didn’t exploit it…..Bummer….
I love Leach and what he has done for Tech! He defiantly knows what hes doing, and I can see his master plan unfolding. I’ve been there since the beginning. When we went from non-relevant to relevant. Keep it up Leach! We are so so close!!!
So we are 11pts away from having an undefeated record. Lets get our s**t together and Wreck Em Texas TECH!!!!

The second half of the game Saturday wasn’t that bad! I mean Sheffield did make some mistakes, but did a whole lot better than Potts. I think Potts does not need to come back until his head is completely healed. The thing I loved the most of Saturday is right after half time, the attitude of the OL was amazing! They were fired up and ready to go. I think that had alot to do with Sheffield’s leadership, then when they got fired up, so did the DL. It was just a good vibe coming from the whole team that I havent seen since last year.

Longhorn fans come here because Texas Tech is the best team they’ve played to date. They’re not over having Tech dash their hopes last year. Despite their repeated attempts to claim superiority, they understand Texas Tech can beat UT in any sport, on any given day, despite their ability to recruit three deep at every position. It would really irk me too, so I understand their frustration.
Potts will be fine. State and federal judicial systems will eliminate many Longhorns from the team this season. Leach needs to review football 101, and Carter needs to work his butt off to have the senior year he has been imagining. And that has nothing to do with Facebook, Twitter, or anything else besides being the best he can be and making his team better.

Sorry Candice. I only went to Tech for 6 years to earn my Degrees. Thanks for your arrogance and rudeness too. Way to “practice what you preach”. I am old and cranky. What’s your excuse?
I have been a Tech fan for 45 years since the Donny Anderson era. I have seen Tech go from nothing to “almost” the best. It is frustrating to see a defense so inept and a coach that continues to try a game strategy that does not work anywhere else in the country. Sure it’s exciting but will not ever be something that will win conference or national championships.

TTU-ex: I hope you understand that most of that post was sarcasm. I just think that we are all on the same team and are here to talk football. Pointing out grammar and spelling mistakes and belittling others is not what we should be about. I have not been a fan as long as you have simply because I have not been alive as long. I am one of the biggest fans you will ever meet, however, and have been since I was old enough to watch the games. I agree that it is frustrating to have a bad defense! I also agree that Leach can be irritating. I do think that we have to take his offense for what it is though. You can’t really take conventional football wisdom and put it on that system. Does that mean we will never be a conference or national champion? I don’t know. It is a discussion that I have been in several times lately and one that, in my opinion, deserves some attention from the athletic department. I love Leach, but I love Tech more and want to get to the “next level.”

Hey fortyacres — you really should do your research before you post.
I just searched “longhorn carpet” and you will NEVER guess what came up!!!! Up pops a whole list of companies named “Longhorn Carpet (Distributors, Cleaners, etc)” from Austin and the surrounding areas. Frankly there were too many to count.
Secondly, UT athletic apparel might be marketed by NIKE, but so is Texas Tech apparel; however I see UT items for sale in nearly every gas station I walk into. (I live in Central Texas.) Longhorns must be so proud when they see “one of their own” walking down the street wearing a longhorn hat sideways with his pants drooping to the ground.
In regards to Texas Tech football, we have struggled a bit this year as we all know, but I really don’t think this season has been all that bad. While it has been disappointing, I just think after last year that feeling may be heightened a bit. Both games have been close and could have easily gone either way. If it wasn’t for last year, we all would be so excited that we are heading in the right direction. We are still building and still making a name for ourselves. We are slowly earning the respect we deserve — not only from the media, but from our rivals as well.

Viva–yeah but TTU lost to a ranked team by ONE point at their home stadium…and UH went to UTEP–WHO WAS UNRANKED–and got slaughtered.
If anyone was made to look like a beginner at any time during the season it was UH last Saturday..I mean, c’mon..how do you beat TTU and then lose to UTEP??? Did UH simply ”overlook” UTEP? If that’s the case then both OSU and TTU can logically say they both ”overlooked” UH. Simply put.
Everyone knows UH got lucky in their win over TTU. However, UH played a great game in the end and capitalized on the mistakes and bad playcalling on TTU”s part. I said on various boards that in order for UH to keep up the momentum they have to build on the success of that game–and it looks like UH failed to do so.
So I hope UH players and fans enjoyed the Top 25 ranking while it lasted because it will be a long time before UH sees 1-25 next to their name in paper or on screen.

The hit was helmet to helmet, and you know it. TU has alot of pull in the Big12, and will therefore always get away with cheap shots. Its very strange that there are always issues with the Refs when the game is played in Austin. As for the undefeated power house. Your only hope to get to the NC is to get past OU. You better hope to God that Bradford is still out. TU can not beat OU with Bradford in. Even if TU should luck out, and get past OU, TU can not play with the likes of Florida. Another waisted season for TU. You talk about being the best, but very seldom ever achieve the feat. You are obviously a loser, and like alot of TU fans you follow TU because you have very little self esteem, and rely on the success of TU to make yourself feel better.
