Leach indefinitely suspends standout lineman
Texas Tech offensive lineman Brandon Carter, the day after a frustrating last-minute loss at No. 17 Houston, has been suspended indefinitely by head coach Mike Leach, an athletic department spokesman said Sunday evening.
‘‘Brandon Carter has been suspended for a violation of team policy by coach Leach,” said Blayne Beal, Tech associate media relations director. ”His suspension is indefinite.’’
Beal said Leach would have no further comment.
A few hours before, Carter had told followers of his social networking account that he’d been suspended and stripped of his captaincy.

Carter
A Sunday afternoon dispatch on Carter’s Twitter account said, “I am not a captain anymore and will not be playing this week. Good luck red raiders ill still be cheering on my family from the stands!!:)”
Tech hosts New Mexico at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium.
Tech dropped to 2-2 with a 29-28 loss Saturday at Houston in which the Cougars scored the winning touchdown with 49 seconds left at the end of a 16-play, 95-yard drive. The loss was Tech’s second in a row, this one in especially hard-to-take fashion.
That touched off angst among some of the Red Raiders’ most prominent players.
Linebacker Marlon Williams, in a Sunday afternoon post on his Twitter account, wrote: “Wondering why I’m still in this meeting room when the head coach can’t even be on time to his on (sic) meeting.”
The Red Raiders normally have meetings on Sunday and a light workout Sunday night, but Leach called off the on-field practice.
Carter and Williams both are seniors. Carter, who made two all-America teams last year, was one of four players voted captain by his teammates before the season started. Once in season, when Leach restricts media access to players, Carter was one he called on often as a team spokesman.
Carter did not elaborate on why his captain status had been taken away or why he was being suspended.
“This is not how I saw our season,” he wrote on Twitter early Sunday morning. “I just cried like am (sic) idiot. I want us to be so good my last year and I feel like I’m letting everyone down.”
Williams, the team’s leading tackler, expressed similar sentiments in a tweet not long after the game.
He wrote, “I can’t believe what happened man my senior season isn’t goin (sic) anything like what I busted my (butt) for …. New week now.”

We need Brandon on the field and his team needs his leadership!

The truth hurts . Horn fan or not , face the truth . Tech cannot play with the big boys every year . Texas just re-load and that s what they do every year . Accept the fact that Texas get blue chips because they win every year and they send players to the NFL . It’s A free country and we can blog on any sight we feel free to . Tech is getting better , but they have to play their best to beat A team like Texas or OU .

well – they ran 2 running backs & then the quarterback over the same spot & never gained an inch. – when they stood Potts up on the last goaline debacle.
what a set-up to a “sneak”.
somebody should “de-coach” Leach as well as de-captain big boy carter.
(Report comment)
That’s a shame. He could hold with the best of em!
(Report comment)
Maybe we need to suspend Leach for a game or two and straighten him out.

I think it is time to replace leach. His bs is running thin.

The team needs Carter, no excuse to break a team rule. i like Leach, but the play calling, C’mon! Who didn’t see the the last minute quaterback sneak coming for the Coogs final score. everybody knew it was comin’ except for the defense. i hated to see them go down that way after bailing out the offense time and time again. why not go back to the stands at this weeks game a pull our new quaterback. Potts-@ things not worth persuing.1. quaterback position 2. lawyer- you couldnt plead your case for intentioinal grounding nor goal line sneak. Not everybody can play, stay on the side and cheer the team on we’ll all be better for it!

BS call by Leach…once again. We need Carter.

Rich & blue-chips don’t count.
Smart coaches and lines with REAL muscle do.
That’s what was lacking at Houston game for Tech.
(Report comment)
Mike Leach is losing control of this team. He tried leaving Tech with a decent record every year, maybe he thinks if he goes 5-7 or 6-6 he can leave by getting fired and receiving a nice buyout.
(Report comment)
We needed Carter the 4 times we ran at the goaline.
We don’t need him no more. ANYBODY can pull what he did at Houston.
(Report comment)
Oh, how losing brings out the worst. Tech was two TDs better than UH and botched it. Look at that schedule … at Nebraska, at Okie State, Kansas looking for revenge. How many bowl-eligible years in a row for Tech?
(Report comment)
When the opponent’s offense gets about 600 yards, you are going to lose 99 percent of the time.
Perhaps Marlon Williams should twitter about that.
Leach is a very good coach, and those Tech players who don’t want to play for him should try to transfer to A&M.
(Report comment)
I like Leach but maybe a good coach would know when his ’system’ he clings so tightly to, needs to be switched up. He lost Tech the game last night. Out coached.

When your offensive line averages 50 lbs more a piece than the defensive line, you should always go for it on 4th and 1.

50 pounds of blubber apparently – per lineman

Leach needs to re-evaluate his decisions on and off the field. Bring Carter Back
(Report comment)
4 times at the same point of attack??
(Report comment)
I’m a Raider, I bleed Scarlet and Black, and it’s a shame to lose Carter, but Leach is the coach and should be supported through this. When he wins with his “BS” we love him, and when we hit a rough spot, we say it’s time for him to go. Last year when he was in contract negotiations, we thought they should fire the AD, now two losses to ranked teams (i.e. teams that statistically we should lose to), and it’s time for Leach to go. I expect that from Short Horns and ATM fans, but Tech is supposed to be above all of that. Lets Go TECH!!!
(Report comment)
Leach is weird as usual, but I think what’s missing in the conversation is that we need a commitment to defense as strong as our commitment to offense. Leach has never valued this. If you can’t stop a 95 yard drive in the the 4th against (an albeit strong and ranked) C-USA team, then you might as well hang em up.
(Report comment)
We need Carter like we need a whole in the head.
ANYONE can do better – how about Pearlie Graves from Tulsa – true freshman taking his place??
(Report comment)
what a horrible way to deal with 2 straight losses…the Raiders will continue their downward spiral if they can’t find a way to get past the frustrations of such a disappointing start to this season. As for the fans, it seems that there is already plenty of backlash towards Coach Leach and this won’t help the situation either. Just months ago these same fans were praying that our Captain wouldn’t jump ship and now they turn their backs on him at the turn of a hat. Come on Raiders, let’s get over this hump and get back on track….Wreck ‘Em!

A sound thrashing of New Mexico would make me feel better.

Carter’s an amazing captain/player. Leach is a good coach. Keep Leach and Carter! Tell them to make up and take our team to victory! WRECK EM TECH!!!!!!!
(Report comment)
One thing I’ve noticed about whorn trolls. You don’t see them running their mouths at the sites of CO, Iowa St, K St, etc. They only attack the teams they’re afraid of. Thanks for the compliments, losers.
Leach has always made bad calls here and there. Name me a coach who hasn’t. The call to forego the FG ended up costing us the game, but that requires 20/20 hindsight. Who would’ve thought we would only score 7 points in the 2nd half?
(Report comment)
Does anyone know why Carter was suspended? It is too early to turn on Leach and the team. There is alot of the season left. However, I must agree that Leach got out foxed last night at UH. Let’s hope New Mexico and Kansas State can be games to help right the season!

I think he didn’t follow team policy – one of the policies is probably that you give your best effort.
In the case of the offensive line – that you actually block someone 1 of 4 times at the goaline.

Wow, Joe Ibarra definitely just summed up the reason why we hate UT…
(Report comment)
Man, I am neither a Tech or Horn fan, but these Horn fans are some really arrogant folks, sounds like they are still PO’ed for you guys ripping them last year. I would save your thoughts for a few weeks, I think these Horn fans will have some problems on their boards real soon, OU may just beat them by 30 points this year. I think Colt “Pony Boy” McCoy has problems heading his way. By the way, what is the definition of a “Colt” Colt- a young immature horse that has yet to reach puberty… LOL
Anyway, Leach and Co need to regroup and get back on track. The Big OL will be back and playing soon, Leach needs all of those guys to finish the season strong… Go Sooners, whip UT’s arrogant butts….
(Report comment)
Joe Ibarra is a total idiot. ut is not the # 2 team in the nation. We gave them all they could handle down in Austin and Taylor Potts was only playing his 3rd game of his career, and first road game as a starting QB.
OU will KICK your butts this year in the Cotton Bowl, with or without Bradford. Your team is highly overrated, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mack and Co. lose two games in the Big 12 this year.
You t-shirt whorn fans make me want to puke.
(Report comment)
The only reason Texas is still ranked #2 is because they are playing non-ranked teams that CAN’T give them a run for their money. UTEP? WYOMING? LOUSIANA-MONROE? They beat them by a wide margin, but TECH sure did give them a run for there money•• GO RED RAIDERS!!!!!!
(Report comment)
Houston game was Tech’s to lose, they did. Qback sneak worst call by Leach in years. For all you Texas bums you know what you can do and your day is coming.
(Report comment)
Admittedly a Texas fan, but I was strongly rooting for Tech last night. Big XII pride and SOS. I have always believed that Mike Leach was an offensive genius. That said, I could not believe the playcalling by Coach Leach.
It looked to me (40+ years of being a football fanatic) that Tech was not prepared for the heat and humidity. JMO, the buck stops with the Head Coach.
(Report comment)
Coaches call plays, not execute them. If you cant get a yard, is that the coaches fault?
(Report comment)
it should be a violation of team policy to run QB sneaks. When is leach gonna learn?
(Report comment)
Tech’s playcalling cost them the Houston game…pitiful…and if you cant get one yard against one of the WORST defenses in the country then you dont deserve to win! Tech is nowhere near UT as a football program…just look at the facts. Techs superbowl was UT last year (think david and goliath). Texas played bad and still dropped an INT that would have won it vs. techs best team they will ever have. 1 out of every 5 or 6 years on a fluke is about how often tech beats texas. 10 win seasons are a rarity for Tech…the norm for UT. By the way, UTEP is a legit offensive team and they were held to 56 total yards while UT gained 650+!!! UT is now hitting its stride with all of their young playmakers…lucky for Tech…
Enjoy the NM win next week…the big12 looms ahead

Brandon-
Whatever you did to create this mess is not as bad as the coaching of the game. But you are a player and a leader and not a coach. Coaches coach but players must play and execute. Everyone seems to be taking all of this way too serious. Unless you are the one playing or working for the school, this should only be entertainment for you. Many of you sound like this is life or death. Regardless of the outcome, the sun will come up tomorrow, people will go to work and school, and the day will roll on.
Relax, watch and enjoy the game, root for your team and when it is over, move on. Life is too short to get your blood pressure up over a game you aren’t playing.

I love all the hatred for t-shirt fans. I graduated UT with honors and then went slumming when I opted for UNT’s grad school. Back to the point: we have a team that intrigues people, not just our own current students and the hundreds of thousands of former students. Most years we have loads of talent (I go back to the ’70s) and we have an organization that manages to take advantage of that talent–usually. When you guys get a disproportionate number of t-shirt fans, you’ll know you’ve arrived. And “arrogance”? That’s the oldest manifestation of jealousy in the book.
My girl friend went to Tech. We don’t hate y’all; that’s reserved for the Aggies and the Sooners. I love Leach’s irreverent ways, and not in any b.s. ironic sense.
Hook ‘Em!

We all realize that Texas fans don’t hate Texas Tech. Well, except perhaps for Joe Ibarra. It’s fine to (yes, even publicly) be a fan of a college team regardless of whether you attended the said school. The thing that annoys most people is not that a non-student/alumnus is a fan, but that the non-student/alumnus acts as though they are in fact affiliated with the school in some way… i.e. putting stickers on their car, referring to the school in first-person (”We…”), etc. There isn’t a problem when the user “quogga” colloquially refers to the University of Texas with “we”, but is when someone like Joe Ibarra does so. It sounds and looks unintelligent, denigrates the university’s prestigious image, and transforms the sport into everything many people hate about professional athletics by commercializing it.

Culver, as far as it being a free country and having the ability to blog on any site that you want is not true. Just ask Billy Zane over at Burnt Orange Nation. He did not like my comments (they were not vulgar) about the way Tech ripped ut last year and I was banned from their site. You can only comment at burnt orange nation if you are sipping the longhorn koolaid. so feel free to make your comments here. but remember this it is easy to win when you spend more on football then most other schools spend on their whole athletic budget.
So with mack brown graduating less than 50 percent (the bottom of the big 12) of his players at least all those ut football alum can talk about their “glory days” as the push fries at McDonalds.
(Report comment)
As far as Brandon Carter is concerned, I love his individuality and his ability as a football player. But at the same time I have to respect the authority of our coach, so if he violated team policies then it is up to Brandon to fix his errors. We will deifinitely miss him if he does not play but the respect for the people in authority is more important.
As far as the bad mouthing of Leach is concerned, I wish that all the fair weathered fans would keep their comments to themselves. We knew this was a quasi-rebuilding year. As a fan we are not going to agree with every desicion he makes, but they do not pay us millions of dollars to coach the team from our couch. The prognosticators picked us to go 8-4 this year and they said we would lose to Houston and Texas. We came close to proving them wrong. Give the team credit for that. We still have a lot of football left.
Go TECH.
(Report comment)
Why all the hate because the Texas Longhorns sell more t-shirts than any university in the nation? I think ND is second in sales. Not being ugly or snide but if Tech could manage to win a few bowl games when they are on the national stage they could increase their t-shirt sales too. After all the Red Raider and black and scarlet are cool and would look nice on someones back in say Chicago or California.
Don’t hate Texas and OU for the national hype they get. Oh yeah and as far as Texas being a rich school you are right. Some is from the oil wells in West Texas but most is from their huge attendance at games. When you can fill 105,000 seats at all your home games you can afford to do things with the money. But having said that remember each team in college football gets X number scholarships so no one has a money advantage on that.
Good Luck the remainder of the season. I want the Big 12 teams to win because it makes us all look better. But when it comes one on one I want Tech to beat OU and OSU.
Hook em Horns.

lol I forgot why I got on here. What did Carter do? I know he is suppose to have broken a team rule but what rule was it? Just wandering if Leach is over reacting because he needed to have the heat for a badly call game on his part taken off his back.
I am not crazy about Carter but I am an old lady and old ladies don’t like tattoos and face paint. He is an excellent player and I hate to see his chances of winning honors taken away if he didn’t do much to deserve the suspension.
(Report comment)
The coach calls the play because he has faith in his line to get them a YARD!!! Don’t blame the coach for having faith in his offensive line, blame the offensive line for not living up to that faith that Coach Leach had to call that play. As for you so called “loyal tech fans” I remember all of you crying for Leach to stay and now two loses to teams in the top 25 you want him to go. Give me a break you love him when he beats UT and OU but can’t stand it when he loses by a combined 13 points to the No 2 and now No 12 teams in the country.
(Report comment)
Wonder if Carter’s suspension had something to do with blowing off steam at Leach after the game? These aren’t bus boys or choir boys playing out there. They cuss, spit, bite and bust each other’s head for three hours on Saturday then get over it, so Carter may be back next week…….. I’m from Lubbock but have lived a long time in Austin, and Tech players are far better citizens than Mack’s all-county teams. It seems there is no crime serious enough for Mack to take the same type of disciplinary action Leach does. Mack is turning out too many half-educated thugs who keep getting into trouble even after their eligibility is over.

I wonder what kind of insecurity or small man syndrome someone must have to thump their UT chest in a Lubbock paper after a Tech loss (to a school other than UT)? Not a man of character.

Everyone always comes down on Leach when something goes wrong. I don’t see any of you out there on the field trying to call the plays. Are you coaches? I don’t think so. Just shut up and let the man do his job. Besides, football is just a game. I am a big Tech fan, but whether they win or lose, my life is not going to be affected one iota. It is nice to see them win and last year was a great year, but that was last year. Let’s get over what has happened so far this year and move forward. Geez, I never heard so many complainers!

Another week in a row that playcalling has cost us the game, very, very bad decisions by coach leach. The defense was great as far as the grit and heart of the players but, why dont we have some sort of blitz package. To all those texas fans. It takes an extrordinary effort to beat ut at austin cause from the onset the officials have been paid off. Look back at film and see that half the penalties called were highly suspect. And yes money and blue chips do have something to do with it but, there will come a day when all the tides of battle will turn and we will see burnt orange turn into bright pink.
(Report comment)
On the outside looking in after watching the game on tv, it appeared that Tech was out coached and under motivated for the win.
Why did they play zone instead of man to man?? A good quarterback (like Houston’s) will kill the opponent playing zone. Tech’s defense was pitiful. Now I realize why they are not rated– undercoached or undermanned???
Tech should concentrate on defense like they have the offense. The offense is good, but the defense gave it away. Undermotivated and out played (again)…
(Report comment)
Tech got beat. They’re not a Big XII or conference powerhouse, they are a young team with inexperienced players at key positions. Fact of the matter is they will be lucky to be bowl eligible this year. I mean come on Tech fan, did you seriously think your team was going to run the table after losing a multiple year starter at QB and your best offensive weapon? Get used to this feeling, it’s going to be happening a lot this season.

to joe who just moved here from clovis, why didnt you just move to austin. If you love the longhorns, you should already have a ut shirt. and if youre into just blowing money on ut go to the mall at any sports shop where you will undoubtedly be given the opportunity to support your team. to jean from brownwood, it is true that the scholarships are equal but money from private donors is happily accepted by all schools. Look at okie state and what T boone pickens does for them, you tell me that they are going to turn down the 100 million dollars that he specifically stated would be used for stadium expansion. I know that Ut has that same kind of support from their alumni. Tech has their support but does not match ut’s probably cause ut is a school that has about twice as many students. Yes we are pissed about losing the last 2 weeks but we will be dancing on the streets every time that texas loses this year. We need Carter, if he is going to be the leader that we know he is. We need Williams to be a leader too. Houston was a tough loss, but we have to move forward as a team and overcome that loss. Of course we would all rather win, but losing comes with the territory at times. Let’s use this to build our character and come together as a team. Pretty sure none of us agree with the calls that Mike Leach made during that game, but the guys on the team need to try to respect him. Obviously, he thought he was doing what was right and what would gain the win. I am praying that Carter gets to come back after the UNM game. I am also praying that the team will use this week to refocus and realize there are still 8 games left this season. A lot could happen in 8 games. Seniors…all is not lost! Put this behind and you move on! We still have time to have a 10 win season! Wreck ‘em!

I could get mighty used to watching the tceh road rabbits get thrown to the pit bulls at Lincoln and Stillwater later this year. But do not worry I just know those independence Bowl folks are all giddy as you dead ray duh fans over the very inpressive home wins over North Dakota and Rice and probably the New Mexicans who just lost at home to the New Mexican Staters who are consistently one of college football’s worst. My 6-6 prediction for this bunch is beginning tio look like a gross exaggeration. 5-7 would be an awesome season for tceh this year. I say BRING BACK JERRY MOORE AND LYLE SENTENCICH! LOL! The blame for this loss is squarely on Leach. First: Only allowing starters to set during the game was a bad idea, it separates the team into two groups and created a fatigue factor during a humid hot long game. Second: Wasting time outs continues to be a huge mistake that is made over and over. Third: The quarterback sneak seldom works on this team and to squander an opportunity to put the game to two or more scores was just dumb. Fourth: A real coach would have put the loss on his back and promises the team and fans that he will do better in the future. I suspect the Cater suspension is a result of mistakes Leach made in this game.

Wow… you UT so called fans…. did you guys not read the article in which we are blogging about? Leave UT out of this. The article is about Tech’s player being suspended and the loss last weekend against Houston. It’s morons like you that only go for who is winning and not really care about the school. If UT was not winning this year you would be buying shirts for another school that is winning… you guys are pathetic. This is not a UT subject. Williams is a solid player, he proved that last year against Texas and this year as well. There is no telling what he did to get the suspension, but if it was calling Leach out for the 4th down goal-line decision to go for it and not kick the FG, then I agree with him. But no matter what he did I am sure that it Leach is justified, he is a good coach but gambles WAY too much. This is a Big Twelve Matter and therefore a UT matter. And I did graduate UT 05 and I was at the TT@UT game this year and three years ago in Lubbock and two years before that. I love the rivalry and cheer for Tech anytime they are not playing UT, even after last year.

I agree that bonehead Leach needs to be the one suspended or maybe stay off Pirate Brew a bit more. HOW disrespectful of him to be late to his own meeting. Lead by example, you idiot! I’m getting sick of his erratic and eccentric behavior—perhaps his label as the crazy scientist has gone to his head. What I do know is that one of the best players on the team is not captain nor is he playing; yet, he was not the one making idiotic calls on Saturday night. Brandon Carter plays his heart out and ALWAYS brings it to the table. I wish that I could say that about Leach. Two weekends in a row, TTU has lost because of Leach’s compulsive gambling habit–take it to Vegas and not to the field. Talk about screwing up team morale–Leach really knows how to do it! We should’ve, could’ve ….had two wins.

Check that meant, Carter not Williams.

We’ll have Carter back for the KSU game. Leach knows the alumni and season ticket holders paid too much money to see Tech lose a homecoming game and when Carter comes out of the tunnel, the house will go crazy. It has been a couple of years since this team lost two games in a row. They are all frustrated and want to blame someone. We’ll get it worked out. The game is over and we can’t take it back. Move on and focus on New Mexico.

I do not see enough balance at QB. Sticks needs a shot. When you have a game on the line the ball needs to be put in the hands of the ve=terans or at least an effort of some sort. Britton nor Lewis or Leong, Batch touch the ball in the final drive. Potts bails out to the right 80% of the time. Keenun is a balanced QB, and the Houston OFC left for that similar reason. No balance and no effort to change the offense to be more balanced. Britton did not get one touch, with Lewis out Leong should be placed on the other side and he and Britton in the game at the same time. Stephens is not ready for crunch time situations ( fumble ) in critical situation turns the ball over when we needed to put the game out of reach. Tight games require a cool calm demenor, a little known statistical fact Britton has shown up in big games, this offense does not see it, Houston got the ball in the players hands with speed in the open field, all we do is roll to the right or have the receivers run to the right. It is a mental retardation tendancy, leaving us playing with half a field and the opposing defense with the advantage. That the way I see it. Change or DIE!!!

It is one thing to lose a game to a better team…but to lose because of “Oops! Maybe I should have kicked the field goal.” The Players are out there every day working their tails off and then giving their all in the games only to lose by “In hindsight…maybe I should have kicked the field goal!” Mike…do you not understand how that can cause animosity among the players. This game seems to mean more to them then it does you! Clearly Brandon voiced his opinion a little to loud and paid for it. If I were the remaining Captains on the team…I would show it by making a stand until Brandon is back. A whole team against one man is a powerful statement. Angers apparently flared up and now an ego is in the way. The ego needs taken down! There is no room for that at Texas Tech!
I think Leach is forgetting that these are kids. The sad part is…the kids are showing more maturity and learn much quicker then Leach does.

Guys we as fans got to be supportive right now. We have a young team and its still early in the season. I think we are only going to get better from here. Two tough loses on the road to the number 2 and number 12 team in the nation…not bad for a bunch of young red raiders. They could have won both if not for mental errors, so give them some time. And let’s cheer for our guys! Wreck’em tech!

Well, since we (UT) already beat Tech this year, I was hoping Tech would win against UH, for strength of schedule purposes. Coach Leach gets high marks for his offensive acumen, but, dang it, there’s a time to put aside the gimmicks, and Leach missed it when he didn’t kick the field goal. He could have done better clock management in the 4th quarter, as well, but, IMO, the non-FG was what really screwed ya’ll in the game.
I’m sorry to read that Carter is suspended- he brings a good does of color to the game, and just seems to really “fit in” with Tech. I hope that whatever problems they are can be resolved.I hope ya’ll get back in the mix of things and win out the rest of the season.

Okay you all say you’re Tech fans, then stand behind the coach who put the team together. Everyone knew this was going to be a rebuilding year. And Leach made the right decision by suspending him because he VIOLATED TEAM PLOICY. You think Leach wants to hurt the team? If a player breaks a rule, he has consequences.
And UT fan, you have no room to call anyone a drama queen. Why the hell would you come to a Tech website in the first place?

Ex TT football fanaic, you’re dumb. What Leach does works, the players just need to commit themselves to his coaching style. I think he probably made that clear to all of the players their freshman year. Debunking the coach is just like blaming the refs for the loss. I’m only 18 and I know that’s stupis. I have close connections to Coach Leach, and he may have a different personality, but I know that he loves this college and this team, he wouldn’t be the HEAD COACH otherwise. He does not drink before the games, that is the most ridiculous, inconsiderate thing I have ever heard. Good thing you’re an EX fan, we don’t need people like you having anything to do with this program.
And have you ever met Gerald Myers? He is a very, very nice man, and has been at Tech for almost 50 years. Myers is responsible for hiring Coach Bob Knight, the most winingest coach in college history. My father also played for Myers when he was at Tech and not only had a very successful season, but learned a lot from him that he, as a successful coach, uses in his own techniques. Myers has also recieved the Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award, and the Metropolitan award for his contributions to college baskeball. He is also reognized in the Texas Tech Athletic Hall of Honnor. He has EARNED some of the most prestigious athletic awards there are out there.
Pull your head out of your butt and recognize that they are a TEAM, they follow the COACHES rules.
(Report comment)
Noel, same goes to you. I know for a fact that Mike Leach wouldn’t show up to a game drunk. First of all I’m sure there’s some NCAA rule that prohibits that and second of all he wouldn’t be around anymore if that were the case. He’s over 21, he can drink at a bar if he wants to.
“if we can get our frat boy, drunkard of a coach to act like a man and grow up”
…really?
He has a wife and kids at home, he has done something with his life thats better than siting around on a blog all day talking trash about people he’s never met before.

There is a lot of good going on at Tech these days. Not to down play this issue, but Leach has already taken ownership. Bottom line, Leach is the Coach and noone on the team should call him out on his decisions in public. This is true in business too. You simply do not call your boss out in public. As far as I am concerned, a bad situation was handled correctly. Leach acknowledge he should have kicked the field goal, and Carter was suspended for insubordination. Carter will make right wth the team and with Leach, and we can move forward.
(Report comment)
It seems as a ton of folks have seen Coach Leach drunk… hmmmm… not true. It seems that there are tons of football geniuses who know how to handle a team and coach for victories only….again… untrue. And lastly, a Longhorn fan calling men, “queens,” unbelievable.

Tech is a second tear (oh sorry) team and when they are winning, they have the best fans. When they lose, they cry about everything officials, to weather, to players, to bad pirating.
If you want to succeed with schools like OU, UT, OSU, NEB, UK etc… take your punishment for poor coaching judgements and lack of desire to win and work on it. Find better players and/or coaches. Just look at the fool you have on the line and the friek show he intends to be instead of being a ‘team player’. Any normal Coach and University would not put up with the wannabes at ttu. Become leaders, not friek show winners. Maybe you will get some national coverage about what a great program you have versus the tiny little college that couldn’t.

You can’t talk about self-expression when you’re talking about sports, none of that crap matters. If you’re saying enough, then don’t post a comment that you know is controversial. Get to know the person UNDERNEATH the face paint.
If he did something wrong – then yes punish him. But then again if what they are saying is true – then why wasn’t a certain coach also punished for doing the same thing? I’ve seen someone else posting the same thoughts on different boards.
Yes Leach is the coach – but he has to lead by example as well and well sometimes he just doesn’t do that.

Okay, this is exactly why we can’t win any games right now and why we have won 3 out of out last 7 (going back to last season). Last year Carter pissed and moaned any time Leach atually decided to punt rather than “go for it” on 4th and 5 from areas like our own 45 yard line; this year he wants to second guess again (after not scoring and not “doing his job” to move people 3 feet). Which is it? What do you want you want-to-be wrestler?
Additionally, this “which is it” applies to our entire season so far. For years, I have heard over and over that Leach’s “system” is so easy. If that’s the case then why do we have players like Carter that, again, can’t do their easy job??? Now people, including his own “players” (if you want to call them that at the moment) are saying it’s Leach’s fault and his “system” is flawed!?! Again, you (Carter) you can’t have it both ways…
IF, it’s an easy system and Leach “simply doesn’t have it anymore,” then why can you not do your easy job? There is no consistency at all (in this “easy” system). If there were, then maybe you’d be right to question Leach. If you did your job, like your paid to do (I might add), and we still lost then you’d be right; however, you haven’t.
Perhaps, it’s not so “easy,” and perhaps our team (Carter is only one) sucks this year. No one does their job, but wants the entitlement of “champion” like UT. I hate UT; always have. Perhaps this is what Tech needs though to finally wake up, quit seining (a fishing term for fishing with a net) the lower end of the gene pool for talent (definitely where Carter was found), and recruit some players that simply want to play, block, catch, and tackle (something we also seem unable to do as of late). Perhaps next year, after what I predict will be a 6 and 7 or at best a 7 and 6 season (including a loss in the Independence Bowl to a SEC team), we’ll finally get back to those that simply wanted to go to Tech to prove to everyone else that they were worth a damn, could play with the best of them, and represent a mistake when overlooked for other talent (e.g., Wes Welker, Ricky Williams, and even Michael Crabtree).
Good luck Carter finding a job beyond one where you hand Tech grads fries and ask if they’d like a shake with their meal. Good riddance. I think it’s time to change your diaper “Mankind”…

I will no longer support any sports at this college, until the BAN is lifted and Coach Leach is removed. This kind of Kingdom like behavior is unacceptable and should not be tolerated. Football is a game folks, looks like the game now is the coaches who think they run and do as they please.. Well I say no more. My support is gone.. And untill the players, the twitter pages are back, and this coach is removed, im going to urge everyone else to do the same. Time coaches show more respect for the college they represent, the team he represents, and state he represents. After all there are many coaches that like to have this guys job.. just as players.. I wonder how many players hes helled at for being late.. What a fake coach this guys is.. Do as i say dont do as i do.. So anyone who says this coach cannot be replaced is living up in space. These players did the right thing, and i urge other players to do same. Speak out.. Your coach is doing something wrong, say something.. Hes not your god, or your master. This guy is a joke. No cooling fans for players in Austin. Benches only for starters in Houston. Onside kick down 7 points in the 2nd half against Texas. QB sneak on 4th and goal when up by 5. Only 7 points in entire 2nd half against a smaller UH defense. Suspending Marlon Williams.
This guy may be a genius when it comes to designing plays, but he’s a moron when it comes to being a field feneral. He should be an offensive coordinator somewhere, not a head coach.
Maybe they can have Alberto Gonzales find someone to waterboard this clown so we can find out what’s really going on.

Word is that Carter tore up the locker room in Houston after the game. If that’s the case, he should have been given the game ball, rather than being suspended. At least he cared enough to be p.o.’d.
Then again, if that story is true, how did Houston know it was torn up? Given that sewer they play in, anything he did could only have improved it.
Fire Gerald.

Bob in Austin Says: Most, if not all of the so-called Longhorn fans on here are, as my daughter (a Tech senior) calls them – convenience store Longhorns. They buy their fake Texas Longhorn crap at their local 7-11 and proclaim themselves Texas Longhorn fans. None graduated from UT and most have never set foot on that campus except to attend a football game and pretend they’re the real thing. Go Red Raiders
I guess this is different than convenience store Raider fans, as in ” your future employer”.

This is so funny. If you are a Horn fan, you must not have gone to UT, according to some people on this board. What does that have to do with the price of rice in China?
Tech is teetering on the brink of total collapse. A loss to UT is understandable, but to lose to Houston?????
C’Mon Raiders. You’re hurting UT’s strength of schedule.

Hey Cajun Techie: Since you dislike Tech, why not go get on another blog and never come back?

One last remark: Tech has two road losses by a total of 11 points to two teams who as of Tuesday morning will have an average national ranking of 6. It is fair to say that if the games were played in Lubbock. Tech would have won both. SO WAKE UP FOLKS. This is another good Tech team.

“It is fair to say that if the games were played in Lubbock. Tech would have won both”
…if you can’t win road games, then you’re not a good team.

FOR THE UT FANS ON HERE:
we wear our Texas Tech shirts cause we went to school there. You wear your longhorn shirts cause you went to walmart.
WRECK EM!!!

Big12,
I never said I was a teacher….I said “even my 3rd grader knows that” meaning that my child who is in the 3rd grade knows the difference between “your” and “you’re.” Congrats on the English degree….it’s obviously serving you well.

Why don’t you take that so-called team down to El Paso and see if you can handle UTEP THIS year. Probably be a close game.

I am so happy that Texas Tech and Texas are NOT bitter rivals. If they were, we would really have a lot of Horn fans dogging a Lubbock Avalanche Journal web blog who would really show some dislike for our Red Raiders. As it is, the few that do show up make enough noise to have one consider the Tech/Horn competition as a RIVALRY! Of course, according to ALL of the Horn fans I know in Austin, Tech is NOT a REAL RIVAL, not like A&M and OU are. Right! So, just because a few mouthy Horn fans come here to brag about UT and try to drag Tech down, please remember: WE ARE NOT RIVALS! LOL!
Now, I am as disappointed as anyone with Tech’s losses the last two weeks, but it is not the end of the world. Tech will live on to play more football games, and they still have the opportunity to learn from their errors and improve enough to have a legitimate chance of winning most, if not all, of their remaining games. There is no reason to disrespect what is going on with the team. Things like this has happened in other sports aat Tech and many other universities. What I appreciate about Mike Leach is that he does not shy away from disciplining anyone, even an elected captain of the team. I am sure all will come to grips with the situation and will settle things accordingly. Until then, I plan on continuing to support the Red Raiders as much as I can. I hope all Red Raider fans will do the same. These kids deserve our support, as does the coaching staff.

I’m glad they suspended the guy. Comes out looking like a moron before the games. Needs to play football or go to the WWE.

All this talk. How the hell is this crap considered a “News ALERT” Lubbockonline??? JEEEs, glad it’s not really something of “News ALERT!!” status or we’d would have overlooked a real “ALERT”.. ALERT….Football gossip Alert!.. What a joke!

Tech will get back! Longhorn fans are mostly fans…….. probably never participated in any sports………. probably can’t spell football, The horns will lose too and soon to: OU, OSU, and KU!!!!!!!!!

Carter was uncontrollable and literally destroyed the visitor locker room after the loss to Houston. That’s why he was suspended.

Too bad TT. Your gimmick offense wasn’t quite as good as UH’s gimmick offense. Enjoy your 8 or 9 wins this year and your predictable slide back to mediocrity.

This is ridiculous. Toughen up Raiders! We got hit in the nose twice. So what! Get up and quit whining about it. We need to earn some of that respect we crave. You earn respect for being tough not for being weak. Quit the hysterics, UT does it better anyway.
Anyone can support a winning team. It isn’t as easy to support a team when it struggles. It was fun last year; everything came so easily. Easy to us fans anyway. The team is having to work just as hard only with lessor results this year. We will find out about this team if they still are fighting to win in November without the grandiose limelight. We are finding out about Red Raider fans right now. And it isn’t pretty.

Come on guys, keep your heads up. We can still get a chance to win our first Cotton Bowl.

I don’t understand why he is being stripped his captaincy and being suspended. Can any coach or fellow player or fan disagree with the statement thathe is upset that they are 2-2? So that’s not where he saw his senior year going, that is a truthful statement.
THEN, he follows it up with acceptance of responsibility, “I want us to be so good my last year and I feel like I’m letting everyone down.”
He is owning up to not being better.
Doesn’t a captain lead by example? What better way than having your all-american say he needs to be better. The message should flow through the locker room to every player.
I wonder if he said that at a post-game news conference, or interview would he stil have been suspended.
Shame on TT!

I hate to see two outstanding seniors to be suspended but lets face it,publishing your ill feelings on TWITTER is not a good display of an intelligent decision! We need to develop other plays for short yardage other than aQB sneak(everyone in the stadium knew what play was going to be called DUH!) Potts definitely is not the QB that Grahmn Harold was and he will NEVER be able to lead this team to a 10 WIN SEASON!! He does not have the ARM,SPEED< SMARTS or LEADERSHIP to lead this team to the GREAT year we had last year.Potts continues to make BAD decisions!!!! He has to be able to get out of the pocket and he continues to throw off his back foot.He never sees his secondary or third receiver. Harrold constantly saw the secondary receiver and other options. Potts only sees the primary receiver. Also, that last second Hail Mary was only 30 yards short!!! Pretty bad when your receivers have to change their routes and come back up the field to catch the long ball.Coach Mike is a GREAT COACH and he will lead us again to national prominence!!!The RED RAIDER OFFENSE needs change NOW!!! NOT after we have 5or 6 more losses! TECH is loaded with great athaletes and talent.Lets try something new.Potts has not played against a great defense,it wont be pretty when he does!!!!I am sure we will bounce back against New Mexico( BIG WHOOP)Hopefully Carter and Williams will be back soon.
