Tech notes: Sales brisk for Tech-Baylor
Ticket sales for Texas Tech’s Nov. 28 game against Baylor at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington look to be around 45,000 after good sales through both campus outlets.
Tech has sold out its allotment of a little more than 30,000. Baylor has sold about 12,500, university spokesman Nick Joos said Tuesday. The Dallas Cowboys retained some tickets to sell to their season-ticket holders.
“This game is easily our best seller on a single-game basis,’’ Joos said in an e-mail, “and has sold more than UT.’’
Dave Welsh, the Tech assistant athletic director for ticket operations, said www.TicketMaster.com will begin selling tickets next Tuesday.
“We sold everything,’’ Welsh said. “I really thought that was phenomenal.’’
Capacity at Cowboys Stadium for the Tech-Baylor game will be a little more than 60,000.
On another front, Tech’s final count on season ticket sales is 39,681 — about 2,000 less than the school record total sold in 2008.
“I don’t think that’s a very disappointing number, to be honest,’’ Welsh said. “We felt it would go down a little bit with a little bit of (a price) increase and areas expanded for donor-based seating purposes. I think it’s actually a pretty good number.’’
Walking wounded
Three Tech starters — inside receiver Detron Lewis, defensive end Ra’Jon Henley and safety Franklin Mitchem — appeared to have not practiced Tuesday.
As they left the field from the closed workout, Henley (ankle) remained in a protective boot, Lewis (hamstring) wasn’t in pads, and Mitchem had his left arm in a light sling. All three got hurt in Saturday’s 55-10 victory over Rice.
Tech doesn’t disclose information on the nature or severity of injuries.
Lewis appears closer to a return than Henley. The latter continues to move stiffly on his injured ankle.
Mitchem made his first two career starts this season at safety. If he were unable to go in Saturday’s game at No. 2 Texas, the next safeties on the depth chart are Brett Dewhurst and Will Ford, who play in five- and six-defensive back packages.
Linemen battling
Offensive line coach Matt Moore praised sophomore guard Lonnie Edwards several times in preseason practice, but never mentioned him as a candidate to start. But Edwards made his first career start Saturday and did well enough that Moore is leaning toward using the same starting five this week.
“He’s gotten used to the speed of the game,’’ Moore said. “He’s really moving around well, and he’s freakishly strong, which makes that position a lot easier. He’s strong like (former Tech guard) Louie (Vasquez), that kind of pure strength.’’
In the season opener, Moore started Mickey Okafor at right guard and returning all-American Brandon Carter at left guard. Last week, it was Edwards at left guard and Carter at right guard.
“It depends how well Lonnie performs and how well Mickey performs as to where Carter’s going to play,’’ Moore said. “They’re really close right now.’’
