Sulphur Springs OT joins Tech pledge class

BY DON WILLIAMS l AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Beau Carpenter, a starting offensive tackle for Sulphur Springs’ state championship football team, has made an oral commitment to Texas Tech, Sulphur Springs coach Greg Owens said Sunday.

Owens said Carpenter is 6-foot-6 and about 250 pounds. He’s started 27 games the last two years.

“He’s done a terrific job for us,’’ Owens said. “He’s a big body that can run. At a 6-6 kid, we’ve got him at a high 4.7 or a low 4.8 in the 40.’’

Sulphur Springs went 14-2 last year and won the Class 4A Division II state championship. Carpenter started at right tackle for that team. He’ll be moved to left tackle for the 2009 season, his coach said.

Carpenter has a lengthy list of scholarship offers, the biggest schools being Oklahoma State, Missouri, Kansas, Vanderbilt and Northwestern, Owens said.

“Every year he’s continued to improve and get better and stronger and more physical,’’ Owens said. “He’s bench pressing over 350 pounds. He’s a good-looking kid with a lot of upside. I feel like he’s going to have a great college career.’’

Oral commitments are non-binding. The national signing period begins Feb. 3.

Just one more piece of the puzzle! He will even more effective on the left side due to great lateral motion–picks up the pass rush with great results…..Great acquisition!!!!

I would love to see him work a bit at TE, either from the Y or the H. The big guy is always a little bit open…if he is agile as well as fast he could wreck havoc from the Y spot.

I think we will end his career at TTU as an OL, he needs a few more pounds to get to Div1 weight. He could play reciever till he got close to OL weight as far as I am concerned.
