Former Raider Parks among candidates for Texas Sports Hall of Fame
BY DON WILLIAMS l AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Former Monterey baseball coach Bobby Moegle and former Texas Tech football All-American Dave Parks are among 20 candidates on the ballot for the Texas Sports Hall of Fame’s class of 2009.
Charley Johnson, who grew up in Big Spring and was an NFL quarterback from 1961-75, also is a candidate on the primary ballot.
The Texas Sports Hall of Fame’s selection committee formulated the ballot at its annual meeting Tuesday in Waco. Six will be elected from the primary ballot of 20 candidates, and two will be chosen from a separate veterans’ committee ballot of 12.
The new class will be announced in October, and induction ceremonies will be in February or March in Waco.
Parks, a Tech end and defensive back from 1961-63, was among five candidates who were automatically carried over from last year’s ballot for having the highest voting support without getting in.
Moegle, Monterey’s coach from 1960-99, finished with a record of 1,115-266 and won state championships in 1972, 1974, 1981 and 1996.
The vote on the new ballot will be conducted this summer by the selection committee, which consists of 26 Texas sports media members.
The Hall also includes a fan vote component. Fans can sign up for the Official Voting Membership at $25 or $50 levels and receive the annual ballot and benefits such as free admission to the hall, gift shop discounts and name recognition in the induction banquet program.
