Leach shocked by Aggie outrage over draft comments
BY DON WILLIAMS l AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Mike Leach signed his new contract two months ago and ended spring practice a week ago, yet the Texas Tech coach wandered into the headlines again this week in what’s supposed to be down time.
Leach said Wednesday he’s shocked that a comment he made about Texas A&M’s Stephen McGee stirred up a hornet’s nest in College Station.
“The remarkable thing is, all my life I’ve never been upset with the Aggies one time,” Leach said. “They get upset with me anywhere from every four to six months. However, of all the times they’ve gotten upset with me, our fans or anything I’ve ever said, it takes a heck of a detective to find something offensive in what I had to say about the draft.”
Sunday, after the Dallas Cowboys took the former A&M quarterback with the first pick in the fourth round, Leach told a reporter from The Dallas Morning News, “I’m happy for Stephen McGee. The Dallas Cowboys like him more than his coaches at A&M did.”
That perturbed A&M coach Mike Sherman, who addressed the issue each of the next two days.
On Wednesday, Leach said he can’t see what the big deal is.
“I never questioned the handling of the (A&M) players in any way and have always expressed the utmost respect for their coaching staff,” Leach told The Avalanche-Journal.
“I’ve always said that it is truly exciting to play Texas A&M – the quality of coaches they have, the great team and great tradition and, above all, the quality of players they have,” Leach continued. “I’ve always known A&M had great players. The fact that they have the luxury to put a third- or fourth-round draft pick on the bench, to me, identifies what a truly great team they are.
“It’s an honor for us at Texas Tech to have the opportunity to play them. There are numerous players on our team that will never get a look or play a down in the NFL, so you can imagine how exciting it is for me and them to go play a team the magnitude of Texas A&M and look over there on the bench and see third- and fourth-round draft picks.”
Leach has been a burr under Aggie saddles. His teams have beaten A&M seven times in the last eight years, extending Tech’s recent dominance to 11-3 in the series since 1995. Leach has mixed praise for A&M and its traditions with his wry humor.
After a narrow victory in College Station in 2006, he said, “Glad we got out of here with a win. This is a tough place to do it. Once in a while, a pirate can beat a soldier, you know?”
That was a reference to his self-styled team of pirates and A&M’s Corps of Cadets.
On Monday, in the Austin American-Statesman, Sherman responded that McGee was the Aggies’ starter until he got injured last year. McGee, who started three games as a senior, said he was hurt, not benched, as some believed. Sherman went on to say that Leach had no place commenting on Sherman’s relationship with McGee.
On Tuesday, Leach said he was sorry if Aggies were offended, but didn’t apologize. He then wondered aloud where Sherman thought McGee should have been drafted, given Sherman’s background as an NFL head coach.
Apparently, that prompted Sherman to release a statement sent out late Tuesday through A&M’s sports information office.
In it, Sherman said: “There is nothing Mike Leach could ever say that would offend me. I do find it unfortunate, however, that a college coach feels the need to question the handling of a player by a staff particularly without any knowledge of the facts or the extent of a player’s injury. It is equally bothersome that a football coach would question the draft status of a player. This doesn’t make any sense to me.”
Sherman added that, numerous times before the draft, he said McGee figured to be a late third- or early fourth-round pick – right where the Cowboys took him.
Leach said he was surprised the tempest had drawn as much attention as it had over several days.
“How can anyone not be shocked that they’re offended by this?” Leach told The A-J. “How is that possible? I mean, they’re the ones that keep issuing these official statements. I haven’t issued any official statement. I just answer questions when somebody asks me one.”
Leach is freaking awesome :)
A&M used to deny that a rivalry existed with Tech for years, and you know, they are right, Tech owns them. The Aggies actually booted Baylor out of the Big 12 South toilet, and all their third and fourth round picks can get used to last place for a while.

I love Leach’s humor sometimes.
How exciting it is to play a team like the aggies and see a 4th round draft pick sittin on the bench. Its priceless.
I have to feel bad for McGee, though. being “inured” and all.

Boneyard, nice jab; here’s one back 39-33. For a TU person to call anyone else a whiner is pretty ironic, since you have the greatest whiner on the planet as your coach, old Mack. You know, he agrees to rules, then wants to change them. Oh, did I mention 39-33?

Taylor, you’re right there with the question of rivalry with Tech. Afterall, how could it be much of a rivalry if you loose To the Red Raiders every year, lol. All of this BS about about McGee was stired up by the media over a mere little typical Mike Leach joke that wound up being taken the wrong way by a bunch of losers that they are, the aggies. Notice that i don’t think they deserve the right to have a captl A, lol.
Whats really pathedic is the aggie coach getting all upset over notrhing and trying to make himself look heroic, lmao! The aggies go and hire what they thought would be their savior, in coach mike sherman. Now theres a bigger joke to the NCAA world than the aggies themselves, lol. They hire a loser of a coach from the NFL that couldn’t keep a job and now are finding out that he’s no better of a coach in the college ranks either. I give him one more year of being a loser to the aggie fand then he will get the ole gigg’em thumb up his butt, lol.
Oh by the way, there never has been and never will be any rivalry between the aggies and the Longhorns. The only rivalry we at UT have ever had and still do, is with OU. We at UT have only tollerated the dumb butt aggies cause the’re not that far from us. There has been only two good aggie coaches at A&M. Emory Ballard and RC Slocum. It looks like the Joke is on the aggies yet again, lmao! I mean hey, we all need a good laugh every now and then and thanks to our college station windmill pilgrams, we have no problem finding a good laugh when we need one, hehehe. Come on mike sherman, cry us all another river of tears cause someone made fun of your pathedic ass again…..Yall know that i could keep goin here b ut im bored now, lol. Peace out Raider fans…..

To all dead ray duhs fans, go ahead and order 39-33 printed on your tombstones, because you are not going to be happy with the final score on September 19, 2009. 39-33 nothwithstanding, Leach is only 2-7 vs. UT and 0-4 in Austin (not to mention 0-5 in Norman). That will be 0-5 in less than 5 months. 2 wins (both in wubbick) and by a combined total of 10 points. Try this one on for size as well, Texas has won 43 times against tech and lost only 14. If you think that is a rivalry then keep dreaming!

Still, besides all this silliness, Harrell deserves a shot at the NFL, give him a chance I say, this is what has Leach upset in the first place, but don’t take it out on McGee, he didn’t do anything to Leach. Yes, Tech has ruled us for quite some time, hopefully this year will be the beginning of a change with that problem.

This is Deja Vu. Everytime an aggie gets “offended” they say the same thing: name calling, attack geographical locations, educations, “they are so much better than Tech”, ect…. Childish for someone that claims to be SO superior of a University. It’s a double standard. A&M has proved year after year that they STILL can’t beat Texas Tech in football which is the main topic of this conversation, remember? Just shut up and play football. Because so far that is the only argument that you can’t win, much like your once-proud football program.
As far as Stephen McGee goes, I WILL be rooting for him. Why? Because he is now playing for the Cowboys which is the only thing we can agree on. Best of luck to him, even though he may not get any playing time backing up Romo and Kitna.

Tech is the best team in the big 12…. they play the best football. Texas, OU, and A&M cheat, or bribe the refs… they do something after every game where the ref committee watches the game and points out bad calls. The average is 5 bad calls each game… and ussually it balances out with some being called on each team. In the last 5 years, UT vs Tech has had 10+ and almost ALL of them have been calls that helped UT.
Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a fair system? The fact that we beat you despite all this…. shows who is really the best team.

The fact that you guys are getting so sore about this (and I mean everyone here – the Raiders, Aggies, Longhorns and any Bears that might have stumbled upon this) shows that this is a rivalry. There will never be a better rivalry in the Big 12 than the Red River Shootout, followed in close second by the UT vs. A&M game. That said, the Big 12 is getting to be so tough that every game is important. It’s a shame that our coach can cause so much controversy with his off-the-cuff statements, but you guys need to settle down. I know everyone is going through football withdrawals, but this is getting out of hand. Everyone just admit that you want to beat us and let’s move on. You don’t even have to call it a rivalry, but if you imply that you don’t care what we do, you’re only lying to yourselves.

I just think that idoit Leech needs to understand how many Cadets join our armed forces and defend our freedom before he takes any more jabs at the Aggies. I know it is difficult for a person that thinks pirates are cool to understand, but A&M is a place that should be respected, given our traditions and our blue collar ethics.
Leech has never played a down of football or even thought about serving our country… he should focus on not being drunk all the time instead of trying to belittle a tradition rich university or a coach that knows how to put his athletes in the NFL. Meanwhile his own “University” is having trouble even staying accredited or free of STD’s.

Look, A&M has been down and Tech has been up. Even though Tech owns them right now, it is still a rivalry. We need to win a Big 12 Championship (not a division, and outright). Tech is so bent on making sure A&M knows that Tech is their rival. Who cares right now? A&M has been down for 10 years and has won as many Big 12 Championships as Tech during that time. Leach is quite the comedian, but I will soon not forget what he did and will do. He is always looking to leave lubbock, and thankfully he does things like this, that other programs will stay away. The matter of the fact is Football is king in Texas, but don’t act like we compete with A&M in athletics. Sure will pull the upset in baseball, or basketball (not this year), but they are constantly going to the NCAA tourney and super regionals. And every other sport they kill us. We need to focus on becomming a better athletic program, and stop worrying about what A&M is doing.

Reality check for all of you TTU fans who obviously cannot see the forest for the trees: This story has absolutely nothing to do with the score of any game last season or what level you may perceive games between Ags and Raiders. It’s not so much a rivalry; just that some Tech fans imagine it to be at that level. But, you need to read this story. Mike Leach is accusing Coach Sherman of benching Stephen McGee; who would’ve been a 1st round NFL pick if he had not been injured. Yeah..did you see and read the last word in that last sentence? Stephen McGee sat out most of games #2 thru #10 because of the FACT that his shoulder was INJURED! His missing those games was not by the decision of Coach Sherman (except for the fact that he realized that McGee needed to heal). Stephen McGee was the #1 QB on the A&M team last season. Obviously, he would’ve played the other 8 or 9 games had he been physically able! HE WAS NOT BENCHED BY ANYONE ON THE A&M COACHING STAFF. The moral of this story is that Leach is not very bright; any Tech fan that cannot understand that and the simple fact of this story is not being too intelligent for believing whatever comes out of his mouth!!!

The record between teams is not a reflection of a rivalry. Yes, aTm always wants to beat Tech as they always want to beat OU, OSU, Baylor and any team they play. Texas remains their rival because of the history dating back to the attempt to shut down the first state college in Texas (Texas A&M) in order to establish a state college in the capital city (UT). Taking 15 years of a football schedule hardly matters. As an Aggie with several on the Tech side in the family, losing to Tech hasn’t been fun but I expect things will change over time. I expect A&M will show some improvement with a 2nd year of Sherman’s coaching and his recruits and I have a tough time expecting Leach to be able to maintain last year’s level of play minus Crabtree and much of his lines. Potts will step in where the guy before him was at QB. It would be fun to see A&M with the lead with only a few seconds left to go in the game and with possession of the ball. Maybe then the idea of lining up to score another 7 would be recognized by Tech fans as the classless act it was. By the way, as an Aggie that stands by the rivalry with Texas, it was a ton of fun to be in the stands at Jones Field when Tech beat Texas. It’s all talk now. It should be an interesting season.

Rock,
Nobody is saying that he is not a good QB. But what about the 2 or 3 years before his sr. year? He didn’t do anything then either. And are you really trying to put him against Sanchez or Stadford? He’s not that good. BUT, in his defense I think coach Fran ruined him. he could have been much better of a QB if he didn’t have to run the option all the time.
Should Leach have said what he said? Maybe not. But it’s so funny how mad everybody is getting over this.

Who cares about McGee or Harrell anyways? No Leach QB has ever done well in the NFL, they know that coming here. If Harrell can break the stereotype of system QBs then good for him. He was a good QB, but you know that he could have done better the last half of his senior year, that really hurt his chances. McGee used to start, yea, but what really helped him was that A&M now runs a pro-style offense, plus McGee will probably just be a backup at Dallas.
A&M only had 2 drafted anyways, while tech had 4, all in the top 4 rounds, thats the same as texas. Heck, TCU had 5 drafted. A&M just needs to focus on using their talent to win. A&M and UT always get the first pick of football players in texas, and UT is the only one of the 2 that can actually do anything with them. You have to admit, tech can stand with the traditional football powerhouses considering what we get.

“After a mediocre career at Texas A&M, McGee has been the Cowboys’ hot-button selection. He started only three games his senior year, but the Cowboys contend McGee was miscast with the Aggies and that he’s a strong-armed, mobile, pro-style quarterback with potential.”
I think this is what the Coach was commenting on. For McGee first four years at A&M he was in the wrong system. Also I think McGee himself made some comments that if he had run a pro style offense during his college career he would have been drafted higher.
I guess that what happens when your just a product of the system.

The thing that drives me insane is the level of arrogance of the a&m fans. What Leach said was true. McGee came out of highs school as a great throwing QB and was then put in a system where he ran the option. He was beat up. This contributed to his being hurt his senior year. I think McGee is a great kid and I hope he does well for the Cowboys. I graduated from Tech in 1980. I am a medical doctor and I have not been unemployed. Tech is a great university. What a&m fans cannot understand is that we love our university, too. Not all soldiers went to a&m. Not all a&m students were in the military. Tech has had many graduates in the armed forces. a&m has the advantage of having the PUF fund. Tech has done more with less resources than any other university in Texas. I can’t believe some of the things that you guys are saying. Leach is a great coach, but he makes all of us look like fools with his idiotic comments. Why can’t he just keep his mouth shut and just let the on-field results speak for themselves? He better keep up his winning ways. If under him we ever have a season as bad as A&M endured this season, he will be gone in a heartbeat. We won’t put up with this embarrassment if he’s not winning.

A new oracle from the Football Prophet
Oh sons of the northern plain, thy colors(red and black) are signs of the what is to come. In the season when the leaves fall, thou will battle and bleed with honor and valor, but will nonetheless fall to greater warriors(indicative of the color red). Your offense will no longer be the aerial attack it once was. It will rely mostly on the one called, “Baron Batch”. He will be your greatest weapon. And though sometimes he will lead the raiders to victory, even he will not prevail against those greater foes, who shall conquer you. The color black represents lack- lack of talent…lack of confidence…lack of fan support. For you see, little by little, the roars of the crowds shall diminish with each time you lose a battle. Many will smote their chest and say, “Surely, this is not the team from yesteryear”.

Leach is a brilliant offensive mind. But that does not excuse his lack of class. He clearly is the one with a chip on his shoulder.
And as for Aggies winning any battles, know this: A&M sent more officers into World War II than all the military academies combined. 55 trees at the drill field represent those who died in World War I. The entire Class of 17 graduated early to fight the first world war.
If you want to crap all over those who serve this country, that is your right. But it makes you as classless as a certain coach on the high plains.

Leach is just toying w/ the Aggies…and the Tech fans & media eat it up. However, know this for a fact:
Proven National Champs Stoops & Brown are in a different class than Leach – in more ways than one.
I feel the need to spell it out for the high plains drifters…Stoops/Brown would never make that comment because they have too much class. Leach is brilliant but, lacks class. Sadly, that’s a formula for success in 2009 Lubbock.

Tech wasn’t around when WWI was fought Eric in Austin. You think that Aggies were the only ones to graduate early and fight in that war?
The truth is that the vast majority of the military is made up of people who didn’t attend college…they joined the military instead. To argue about who did this or that is insane.
My two friends who died in Iraq did not go to college…does that make them less important? Their wives don’t think so.
Don’t come on our site picking a fight and then describe us as classless.
The thing that you can’t seem to understand is that everyone who has ever played aTm can’t stand you guys….not because of the games either. The lame ass “traditions” and chants and yells and kisses defy everyone else’s logic. You are a mindless cult. You are the ones who say, “You have to be an Aggie to understand.”
Tech doesn’t need your approval for anything so stop commenting about how we should act or what we should do or not do.
As for the jabs at Lubbock…have you ever objectively looked around College Station? Really? Do you have ANY room to speak about college another town?
The friends I have who went to aTm don’t act like the fools being represented on this site. Perhaps that’s because they actually earned their degree and realized that they are no better than anyone else.

Just look at Leach’s grand tour at numerours schools during the offseason. All these schools kept calling coach (Auburn, Washington, etc) yet he turned themall down because of what he has built in Lubbock. He loves Lubbock just like we West Texans do. There is no finer patch of dirt in the world.
