Bettis gives Tech doubleheader split with OU

NORMAN, Okla. — Sophomore right-hander Chad Bettis tossed his first career complete game, holding No. 11 Oklahoma to a run on four hits, and the Red Raiders managed a split of a Big 12 Conference series-ending doubleheader Saturday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Bettis, whose career long going into the game had been eight innings at Baylor three weeks ago, needed 154 pitches to dispose of the Sooners (28-8, 8-4) for a 5-1 victory. He carried a shutout into the ninth before OU struck for a run on a sacrifice fly. He walked four and struck out a career-high nine.

He got all the offense he would need in the third inning on a Scott LeJeune sacrifice fly and a double steal with runners at the corners. Those were the first runs scored by the Red Raiders (16-22, 7-8) in the series after being blanked 6-0 on Friday and 4-0 in the first game of the twinbill on Saturday.

Tech’s offensive woes in the first game wasted a solid performance by right-hander AJ Ramos. Ramos, who was hit hard in a loss to Texas A&M last weekend, held the top offense in the Big 12 to four runs on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in a complete-game performance.

It is the first time Tech has had consecutive complete games since Miles Morgan and Colt Hynes both went the distance against Baylor during the 2006 season.

Tech took the 2-0 lead into the ninth when it got three big insurance runs, two of them coming on a two-run, two-out double down the right-field line by Taylor Ashby, who then scored when Mason Macnoll reached on an error by shortstop Bryant Hernandez.

That offensive effort would have earned Tech a Saturday sweep and a series win, but for the second straight game the Red Raider offense lacked punch.

Sooners starters Stephen Porlier and two relievers blanked Tech for the second time on the weekend. It was the first time Tech had gone scoreless in consecutive games since Oklahoma State closed out a series sweep of the Red Raiders in 2007.

Two mistake pitches were basically what kept Ramos from earning a win as well.

Porlier scattered a pair of hits over five innings, walking one and striking out five in his first start after missing all of last season with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He had just one threat from Tech, getting two popups with runners at first and second and one out in the fourth.

OU took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run home run by Matt Harughty, his sixth of the year.
Two innings later, Bryan Hernandez crushed a two-run triple to the gap in right-center field for the final two runs of the game.

Tech’s only other threat came in the eighth as Mike Reed singled and Chris Richburg walked one out later. But reliever J.R. Robinson came back to get Scott LeJeune on a popup and struck out Nick Hanslik to end the inning. Robinson and Ryan Duke combined for three scoreless innings of relief, giving up three hits and a walk with seven strikeouts.

Tech will be back in action Monday in Fort Worth to take on TCU at 3 p.m. at Lupton Stadium.
