Texas House honors ex-Tech QB Harrell

Former Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell added another honor to his long list of kudos.
On Tuesday, the Texas House of Representatives passed a resolution honoring him for his “stellar career that distinguished him as one of the top quarterbacks in the college ranks.”
House Resolution 876 was authored by Rep. Jim Pitts, R-Waxahachie, whose legislative district includes Ennis High School, where Harrell played for his father’s team. Reps. Carl Isett and Delwin Jones, both Lubbock Republicans, joined Pitts in the resolution.
“Mr. Harrell hails from a family with a strong gridiron tradition and he drew on the knowledge passed down by his father and grandfather, both of whom have been high school coaches,” the two-page resolution partly reads.
“Mr. Harrell chose to don the Red Raiders uniform for his college career and first took the field in 2005. By the following season he was emerging as a top-flight quarterback, throwing for more than 4,500 yards and 38 touchdowns,” the document goes on. “In his senior year Mr. Harrell helped engineer Tech’s bid for the national title and its dramatic victory over the number one-ranked University of Texas team at season’s end.”
The resolution also emphasizes that in the 2007 season Harrell tallied 5,705 yards, leading the nation in passing, and became the first Tech quarterback to have two 5,000-yard passing seasons. Moreover, he set the NCAA record for the most career touchdown passes at 134, and his 15,429 total yards made him the second most productive quarterback in college history.
A copy of the document was prepared for Harrell, who shook hands with a good number of legislators before leaving the chamber.
