Denton Ryan gunslinger Young commits to Tech

Denton Ryan quarterback Scotty Young came close to breaking one of Graham Harrell’s most prestigious high school records last season. Texas Tech can only hope it’s not the last time Young draws comparisons to Harrell.
Young, who made his varsity debut in the fall by throwing for 4,495 yards, has made an oral commitment to the Red Raiders. Young threw 65 touchdown passes, two short of the state record 67 set by Harrell, Tech’s starting quarterback the last three years, when Harrell was at Ennis.
“In high school, we both ran the same offense,’’ Young said Tuesday. “I would think that we’re pretty similar, because we’ve always thrown the ball a lot. There’s a couple of similarities.’’
Young said he’s 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds.
Ryan went 9-4 last season, and it ended in Lubbock, where the Raiders lost 38-35 to Frenship in a Class 4A Division I regional semifinal at Lowrey Field. In that game, Young threw for 495 yards and five TDs.
What does he do for an encore?
“I’ve got a lot to work on,’’ he said. “We lost a lot of seniors, and we’re going to have a really young team next year. I’ve just got to work hard … and be a better leader on the team next year. Hopefully, we can get back to how good we were last year.’’
Arizona, SMU, Baylor and Houston also have offered Young scholarships, but he said Tech was first to do so, early last season.
“They have a really good offense, and it’s how I played quarterback,’’ he said. “It’s a pretty similar offense to what we run at my high school. All the coaches were real great. They were the first school to recruit me, and that kind of helped out a little bit. It just seemed like a good place for me.’’
Oral commitments are non-binding. The national signing period begins Feb. 3.

Scotty, you should go to A&M. Stephen McGee will be drafted in the NFL before Graham Harrell and McGee ran the option for most of his time at A&M.

Jeff, what does Stephen McGee getting drafted before Graham Harrell have to do with a blue chipping coming out of high school? Vince Young got drafted ahead of a lot of good QB’s and he is now riding the pine. What’s your point? Seems to me that if I was a gun slinging QB coming straight out of HS, would you want to go to a once-great football program or a team that will let him throw the ball 60+ times a game and beat A&M every year? He is making a decision for college, not the NFL.
Oh and just for the record Scotty, A&M hasn’t won in Lubbock since 1993 and has only won twice since then. We won’t waste your time practicing cheerleading yells on Friday nights nor make stupid noises from the football stands.
I would love to see the next Harrell. He was great to watch. And since you put up 495 yards against my old HS (Frenship) in a loss, you must be a bad ass. Guns up Scotty!

jeff you’re an idget. mcgee throws like my sister and would be a terrible selection for an nfl qb! graham simply doesn’t have the arm strength to be a starter in the nfl. this kid will be bigger and stronger. take off you maroon glasses and get a clue!

Jeff, keep your head up son. I know how much you a&m fans must love Graham Harrel for beating you guys all three years that he played. Must be your worst nightmare to see Tech getting recruits with Grahams talent and class. You guys will eventually beat us again.

Yes McGee might be drafted higher but that’s based on pure nfl talent alone. not production.
I love Graham but he had such a weak arm that he would never be an NFL prospect. That just shows what a terrible choice it would be to go to a&m since all they do is run their talent (and yes they have lots of it) into the ground.
Go to aggieland to disappear. Go to Tech to be recognized and get the attention Leach has brought to the program.

Every player picked in the NFL is picked based on pure NFL talent.
Tech is an easy academic school with a poor reputation (anyone can get accepted).
Scotty, pick a school that is “Tier 1″.

i bet a lot of aggs thought they would never see the day that they have to come onto a Red Raiders site to presuade players down to College Station. it’s sad, but who didn’t see it coming? A&M gets top 10 national talent every year, yet squirt out only 4 or 5 wins, obviously not against Tech. only a few more games & tech will own the all time series in football as well as men’s & women’s basketball…. wonder what the aggs will use to berate tech then? i could spend some time coming up with an answer, but i just remembered that i don’t give a s*it

Tech needs to add more sports for women and drop men’s basketball and baseball. No one attends the basketball games or baseball anyway so they are losing money.

The Tech Athletic Department is hurting financially. Even before this economic meltdown Texas Tech was struggling in terms of having a strong budget for athletics. Obviously, most Tech alumni are not proud of TTU or they would be giving money.
Tech does not have the money of A&M or Texas and because of this they will always have money problems.
Bob Knight quit in the middle of the season.
Leach tried to quit many times (no one will hire him).
Basketball is horrible (yes TTU has another chance to beat the Aggies tonight)
Everyone knows how bad TTU is in baseball.

a&m is the only big 12 basketball team to have lost EVERY big 12 game in one season. That’s just impressive. good game!
wait is this another aggie trying to convince people that people should choose a&m because of other sports for football?
Teir 1? does anyone think a&m is teir 1? that is as laughable as it gets. Tech may not be at the top, but one things for sure…..TECH is clearly a better football program than a&m. not just this year, or next year, or last year, but overall BETTER.

Jeff, before you get too proud of your athletic department let’s bring up how YOUR athletic director has run all of your precious programs aside from woman’s soccer into the ground. Bill Byrd sucks as much as Myers. It’s the only thing I bet we could agree on. But since your program has so much money, how is it that you get your butt handed to you EVERY year by Tech? Are you saying that just because your school has more money that your better. Check the score board. We are a couple wins away from being tied with you in all-time wins in football.
Basketball: The past two years you were 3-4 against us. We took you out when you were ranked in the top 10 3 times. Before that you weren’t much of a program at all. Oh and rumor has it if Pat Knight gets fired, then Billie Gillespie (sp) is going to be the new coach. you know, the guy smart enough to stay only 2 years and get the hell out of College Station?
Here is an idea: how about we have our football coach create a weekly newsletter and scam some money from our alums. Oh wait, it’s already been done by coach Fran. Scratch that idea!
Point is, before you start pointing fingers, take a look at yourself. You are not better than everyone else otherwise you wouldn’t have to prove it to a Tech Blog site.

Jeff, lets update the part about Tech Basketball. Our Horrible team seams to be good enough to beat your Aggies.
Since you seem to know so much about sports why don’t you go try out for an Aggie team. It seams they need all the help they can get. Hey maybe you can be on the 12th Man Football Kickoff team. OOPS. you do not have that any more, right. If I remember correctly it was because of the Kick Off Returns we ran back for touchdowns that stopped that tradition. Is that not true? Tell me it aint so!

Jeff, we could add more sports for women, we could even add football for women, then maybe the aggies could stay competitive. As for basketball (I believe we knocked the aggies out of the Big 12 tournament) and baseball, the last time I checked this is Texas and the other sports fill in the dead time between January and August. Oh, that’s right, a&m doesn’t play football in January. Sorry, I misspoke, you guys do not even play football during the season.
