Knight suspended for one game

BY JEFF WALKER | A-J SPORTS EDITOR

Texas Tech head coach Pat Knight will not be on the bench on Wednesday when the Red Raiders play at Texas.

Knight has been suspended for one game by the Big 12 Conference for his comments following Saturday’s 79-73 loss to Texas A&M.

The conference posted a release on its web site right after Knight finished with his weekly teleconference with the Big 12. The release included a statement from Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe.

The release stated that Knight’s comments were a violation of the Big 12 Conference’s Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Rules.

“I am disappointed that Coach Knight committed this violation soon after a January 31 incident during the Texas Tech game against Nebraska for which he was publicly reprimanded,” Beebe said in the statement. “I was extremely lenient in that case and chose not to suspend Coach Knight. The nature and extent of his comments after the Texas A&M game, and his callous attitude in light of his commitment to me to abide by the rules, require a serious penalty.”

Knight received two technicals and ran onto the court to argue a call when play was stopped in the game against Nebraska.

Following Monday’s teleconference, Knight said he was expecting a fine or suspension after he made the comments and told his coaches such after his Saturday news conference.

Knight said he didn’t think the suspension was related to his public reprimand.

“I don’t think one has anything to do with the other,” Knight told the A-J. “If I have to get my point across and it’ll get me fired, I’ll do it if I think I’m right.

“There’s two ways you can get your point across. You can get a technical or get thrown out of a game or you can say something. I was not going to get thrown out again, so when I was asked the question, I answered it. I knew I’d get fined or suspended, but I had to get my point across for my players. If that’s the only way to bring attention to it, that’s what you have to do.”

Following Saturday’s loss, Knight was asked about the free-throw shooting discrepancy in which the Aggies went to the line 51 times while the Red Raiders shot 22 free throws. Four Tech players fouled out.

“I don’t care right now what the Big 12 thinks,” Knight said following the game. “They tell us to send tapes in and that obviously doesn’t work. Call (someone in the league office) and talk to them … it’s just tough. I don’t care about me, it’s my kids. My kids bust their butt and they have enough of a time playing against A&M let alone have somebody else they have to play against. I just think it’s a shame. Take nothing away from A&M, but we play at home and they get 50 free throws and I have, shoot, four guys that foul out. It’s just not right.”

Assistant coach Stew Robinson is in charge of scouting the Longhorns. Knight said Robinson and associate head coach Chris Beard will control the bench against the Longhorns.

This “fraud” needs to be fired. He has the worst three losses in SCHOOL HISTORY….

For all of you asking for the firing of Pat Knight you need to let the man have a chance. 80% of the team was Bob Knight team not pats he has had one class that he recruited. Given Pat was in charge of recruiting but his dad had the final say. RPI and schedule are one in the same who made the schedule Bob Knight and Myers not Pat Knight. Give him three full years at the helm if nothing changes then you can call for termination. Until then give him a break he is trying. Plus instead of moaning on here why don’t you go to the game or take other people to the game and cheer on the teams(girls included)

Maybe tech should get a rebound once in a while. Wouldn’t that be something?

I think the Big 12 should let the coach’s say what is on their minds at the press conferences. They can’t do anything without getting fined or suspended. I agree with Pat Knight. This is ridiculous there needs to be some changes in the rules for the Big 12.

You people asking for Knight to be fired are nuts! I WANT my coach to stand up for what is right…Big 12 officiating is PATHETIC!!!!!!! We could have very easity come from behind and won against the Aggies but were stymied by bizarre calls. Knight is right when he laments that the Big 12 doesn’t do anything about the officiating. I think at the end of the year the Big 12 should publish the report cards of each official, publicize the names of those who were dropped of the roll, and prove they mean business about good and cocsistent officiating. Knight is a class act, a good young coach and will have Tech back soon. Keep your head up and your mouth “OPEN” Pat.

I cannot believe the first four comments posted here. Obviously, none of the authors watched the game very carefully. The problem is not letting coaches speak their minds about poor reffing as a method to improve it. The Big 12 seems far more interested in protecting the integrity of its poorer refs than in obtaining better quality officiating. My hat is off to Pat Knight. The lousy job by the refs on Saturday against the Aggies was absolutely pathetic and truly merited a chair toss, rather than mere verbal comments. My hat is off to Pat Knight. He knows what he doing. Just be patient — the program is headed in the correct direction.

I’ve been to several Lady Raiders games this season and went to my first men’s game of the season on Saturday. Never have I seen worse officiating than this year. I thought it was just the ref’s for the Ladies, but the officiating was TERRIBLE at Saturday’s game. It was astonishing. It’s not just bad calls against TTU teams — it’s bad all the way around. I think the Big 12 needs to take another look at its officiating team and make some adjustments before next year.

Most conferences have this “don’t bang the officials in the media” rule and for good reason. It just throws gas on the fire for everyone to go off on the refs; fans, coaches, etc. There are good and not so good officials in every sport just like there are good and not so good coaches. I hardly think Tech is hav ing a bad year because of the officials. Maybe they were bad Saturday but I dare say that in some of their games, the other team has had it’s share of bad calls. If you get a speeding ticket for going 80 in a 70, don’t blame the cop! Change the rule but not by doing it at a press conference!!

Robert, the point is simple, no coach can control the refs, but you can control your team with better practice.

I think more people would listen to Coach Knight scream about the officials, but the Aggies pounded Tech on the boards so it is irresponsible for any coach to cry when a stat like rebounding shows his team was out hustled.

How come no Tech fans cried when they beat OU on a “fantom” TD call at the one yard line ??

We expect these kids to be molded into fine young women and men, yet the adults (referees) don’t always live by the same standards. Real Deal,
First, Basketball Refs and Football Officials are completely different, as they call different sports. Fouls/penalties are assessed differently. Second, the “phantom” TD as you say it, was reviewed many times by the replay officials and upheld. Much different than the 34 fouls.

Yes we are aware Tech was beat in more than one facet of the game. However, a lot of the fouls were in error and absurd. This is Knight’s point.

“real deal,” are you kidding me? You try to make a point with a “fantom” TD call? First of all, this is not football. Second of all, I can mail you a picture of the touchdown that proves it. Its even high quality…

I have noticed all year that the officiating in the Big 12 has been poor, and not just against Tech. It is pretty much all around. And Tech blocked out fine against a&m, a&m was just more physical and either pushed tech out of the way or jumped over the back. So maybe Tech should just be more physical, but how does the more physical team (a&m in this case) end up with half the fouls? And how do you call a foul when 5’9 Roberson gets a rebound against a 6’10 a&m player?

And if you do not support Tech basketball IN PERSON, at the games, and if you have not felt the atmosphere and the attitudes of the officials FIRT HAND, do not bash Texas Tech or its Coach.

What most people don’t understand is that the Big 12 is not going to let any of their teams that have a chance to make the NCAA or the NIT tournaments get beat. They want as many as they can get to represent the Big 12. Tech men or women don’t have a chance for either one, so they are the whipping boy of the conference. It was this way in the Southwest Conference and it is still that way today. The offficials know the expectations before each game. They are hired by the conference and can be fired by the conference. If you want to keep your job, you know what to do.

As for Dallas Techsan, if you are old enough to remember Gerald Myers coaching at Monterey , then you should know that was the way basketball was played back then. A coach should speak up for his team. I have seen lots of athletic contests, football and basketball, involving high school and college students. I have seen good officiating. I have seen some officials who probably couldn’t find their backsides with both hands, let alone knowing when to blow the whistle or throw a flag. no doubt about it … the officiating at the A&M game was pathetic. While I may well have chosen some venue other than a post-game press conference to make that point, the fact that Pat Knight chose differently does not diminish the basic fact that the Big 12 officiating crew was not up to the task.

Don’t know what to do about it. Probably tell you kids that occasionally even the refs get it wrong and then get on the plane to Dallas and review the game film with the Commish personally.

Nobody has talked about the call or calls that Pat got the “T” for. first an A&M player went to the floor and held the ball while he slid across the floor. It should have been called a travel. Then going up for a rebound an A&M player went over the back of Roberson I believe and the A&M player hit the floor and they called Roberson for the foul. The refs sucked.

I am sure the Aggies had a few over the back calls go their way. I am also sure A&M’s line up is “bigger, faster, and stronger” than Tech’s.

Tech has slow big men, and athletically they don’t match up well against a physical team.

The “biased tv announcer” who also does Tech radio did not help the matters when he “whined” as well. However, the tv announcer said “A&M has success in games that are physical and low scoring.” In other words Tech had no chance.

At least Pat Knight was honest last year when A&M beat Tech by 40 and said “we had no chance.”

The Big XII does need to address some of these horrible officiating issues! The A&M game was one of the worst I have seen in a long time at any level of officiating.

However, a good coach adapts and overcomes with his team. The current level of the program is horrible right now. Don’t tell me all these great players are on the way and be patient. We heard that two years ago! We have some decent players but their confidence is shot at this point. The level of play is not very good and undisciplined. Too many poor shots and turnovers. Pat Knight wants to out talent the opponent and not out coach him. That does not work for Tech and he should know that. I will be patient; for the day we get a new coach who can coach.

  • Sports Nympho

Also, as a sports official, I can attest to the fact that we give our best each and every time. We get paid no extra to favor one team over the other. What I will say is that in basketball, if one team is athletically better and more talented than the other, (Tech is 12-15, A&M is 19-8) it does make it more of a challenge to call a balanced game. The team with less talent usually tries to over compensate with more aggressive play, thus, resulting in more fouls, turnovers, etc…and you usually see the results that you saw in this game.

Pat Knight should have appealed like Leach did, unless the Big 12 has closed that loop hole. Otherwise, while he appears to be a good recruiter, Pat’s teams are remarkably sloppy. But that still does not excuse referees DUKE EDSALL, KEVIN MATHIS AND TERRY DAVIS, or DAN BEEBE’S amateurish and rather childish handling of this situation. Did he not notice that A&M needed more than 50 free throws to win by 6 points?!? Instead of creating yet more dissension, a real commissioner in a real basketball conference would have addressed the officiating when announcing Knight’s suspension. By not doing so, Bebee runs the risk of further harming the Big 12′s reputation because dear old Daddy Knight will choose his moment to make it an issue on national television.
This is a lose-lose-lose situation. Pat can’t coach; the Three Stooges — Davis, Edsall and Mathis — can officiate; and Beebe can’t sell Amway.

I have been a season ticket-holder since the very old days in the Coliseum. I have supported the team through thick & thin. However, I agree with the point that the Knights have been here 7 years and have been coaching the players that they recruited. Every year it was some excuse — too many juco players, too many freshmen or something else. I am a PSL holder this year, but don’t plan to re-up for 10 more years, or even one more. Look at the sparse crowds — and look at all of us “gray-haired” folks. Many of them won’t re-up either. For honesty, I wish the “actual” attendance would be announced — paint a truer picture of how many fans are really there — or maybe how many aren’t there. I concur with – Get Rid of Gerald! Coach Leach has done more to put Tech athletics on the map than anyone else — and he graduates players. He is normally “close-mouthed” about players – they may be off the team or benched, but he doesn’t air it in the papers, and players have worked their way back to starting positions. I hope better days are ahead for Tech basketball — some of my fondest memories are of attending the SWC tournament in Dallas and spending 3-4 days watching basketball with good friends and watching some good teams.

First off, you idiots that want Coach Knight fired probably never set foot in the USA and don’t even support the team. So your comments are worthless. Second, the so called “officiating” in the Big 12 this year has been an embarassment to the profession. Not only is this apparent live and in person but also watching on TV as well. Even the commentators during the UT-A&M game the other night noted how poorly the game was officiated. The Big 12 conference needs to take a hard look at how they evaluate officials prior to hiring them. The current crews aren’t fit to officiate little dribblers game much less a Division 1 game. They have been a total disgrace. The coaches know it, the fans know it, and the players know it. This current type of “officiating” takes away from the fans enjoyment of the games and the coaches and players being able to compete in a fair and consistently called game. Yes, there will be mistakes made by the officials but with what we’ve witnessed this year, they appear more like personal vendettas than mistakes. Fans pay good money to watch these games and the players put in hours and hours of hard work and practice time and both are being screwed by the three stripped ones that have been incapable of officiating a fair and balanced game for all to enjoy.

Many years ago, at Oregon State the refs were referred to as “con men”. Nothing has changed–they are still “con men” only now they are covered by a complete security blanket. The want the players to accept responsibility for the foul, and they keep count, they want the coaches in a box and if not look out, and they want no public outcry from the coaches.

The basketball society needs to make some accountability for these “con men.” If they did then I am sure fewer coaches would feel compelled to complain. As it is now, few complaints and the results are made public and we have no way of knowing if anything positive has come of the complaint.

This is an issue that needs to be addressed and not just a gag order on the coaches. It doesn’t help that most of the commissioners site guys are ex refs and their fraternity is about as strong as the blue line. Good luck with them:

There seem to be a lot of bitterness and maybe it is justified. However, giving the Pat a year of two is not going to ruin the program and if he can succeed we can all take a deep breath. In the meantime I am with the coach and appauld him for have the moral course to stand up for what most of your belief was a rottenly officiated game.
