The Texas Tech track and field team on Thursday announced a five-member signing class that includes two of the most prominent high school athletes in the country in their events.
Bryce Lamb from Chandler, Ariz., is the No. 1 returning triple jumper in the nation and the No. 2 returning long jumper with personal bests of 52 feet, 2 inches and 25-9, respectively. Three-time state champion Shade Weygandt from Mansfield is the top returning girls pole vaulter in the nation with a personal best of 13-10.
Tech coach Wes Kittley said he expects both to be competitive nationally as freshmen.
Tech also signed Katie Grimes, five-time state medalist from Canyon who will train for the heptathlon and pentathlon; Candace Jackson, a Dallas Skyline sprinter who finished second in the Class 5A state meet 200 meters last year; and Julian Wruck, the Australian junior record holder in the discus with a throw of 199-9.
Tech football signee Derrick Mays from Killeen Shoemaker also will compete for the Tech track team in his specialty, the 200 meters. He took fourth in that event at last year’s Class 5A state meet.

This is great! With the exposure Tech athletics has received the last couple of years in football, basketball, golf, tennis and track, the better athletes are beginning to make a decision to atteng Tech and compete as Red Raiders. Johnson and Kipyego have been great for track. Looks like we can expect even more attention because of great performances in the future.

I agree LJE coach Kittley has done an awesome job. I competed in track at Tech a long time ago and it’s nice to hear about athletes like Johnson and Kipyego. Hopefully this will be part of the recruiting class which challenges for a national team championship! Keep up the good work Kittley!!!!

I watched Katy G (and met her mom) at the Tech HS Indoor meet this past weekend. She is very talented and should be a great addition to the Red Raider program.
