Leach calls items in contract not acceptable

BY DON WILLIAMS
AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Texas Tech coach Mike Leach indicated during his national signing day news conference Wednesday that he and the university are at impasse in contract talks. Leach has two years remaining on his current contract, but two months of negotations on a new deal have led nowhere.

“The money’s never been issue with the contract, not for quite some time,’’ Leach said. “The biggest thing with the contract is after about a year of negotiating, four items were presented that weren’t part of the original agreement and that aren’t acceptable, that we won’t agree to, so that’s what’s holding it up. But the money’s not the issue.’’

Leach was offered a five-year, $12.1-million contract on Dec. 4.
Asked if his and Tech’s being unable to reach agreement was used against the Red Raiders in recruiting, Leach said, “There’s some. Yeah, absolutely that existed.’’

Will Tech ever get rid of the real problem- that being Gerald Myers? I have been around him on several occasions over the years ranging from coach at Monterey H.S. to his current “position” of being Tech’s god. He always was consistent in being an arrogant jerk !!!. He’s the worst I have ever seen. I would not have him representing me at anything.
Tech has little respect here in N. Texas and never will because of ou and texas u. Leach’s style of football may be good for Tech because of their inability to recruit blue chip players, but they will never be a national champ until they get a first class AD and a better recruiting program, and maybe a better coaching staff too?? GO TECH!!!!!

Coach – what goes around comes around. Sounds to me as though you need a new agent – someone that gets results. Or is he just from New York? I’m sure you are not. Other schools don’t have to air-out this kind of stuff with their coaches. I know we have given you everything in the past. I guess it’s your MOVE if you get the picture. Course you better have a pretty good season next yr to protect your package. Good Luck!

Before all of you keyboard cowboys start spouting your off with Gerald’s head comments keep in mind that you have no concrete idea of what those items might be. One may be an executive home in Maui for the head Pirate to go surfing any time he wants. item 2 may be an executive jet and pilot to travel to and from said home in Maui. I don’t think that all requests are as outlandish as these but keep in mind you are not part of the negotiations for a reason. If you want to debate the management of the rest of the athletic department that is fine. Other than the track program the other competitive sports have been mediocre at best; but stay away from the management of the football program. On this front, I will accept the ascendant nature we have all been lucky to observe. Remember, we never had our typical mental loss to a team we should have rolled this year. Got close with Huskers and Baylor and got plain rolled in Norman, but all in all we won the games we were supposed to—- and that sir is a new trend I would will accept and cherish. How quickly have we forgotten TCU and Colorado and Okie State of years past. Celebrate the success and challenge for future progress. If you wanna dog the Raiders got to some other site and do it.

Good lord, are we acting like children, or what?? What the heck are the four items? What’s all this cryptic talk? Come on, Mike, put it out there for all the world to see and let the court of public opinion argue in your favor. The administration wants you, needs you. The fans love you, and want to keep you. This is so frustrating, why are we being so stupid about this? We’re not talking about the secret to world peace, here. For goodness sake, just give the man what he wants. He’s given the school more than any other coach in our history in half the time or better! Can the four items really be that serious, or is the administration just being stubborn? Tell me what he wants, I’ll take a collection and buy it!

I sincerely hope whatever it is holding up Mike Leach’s signing his contract isn’t something petty. He is the best football coach we’ve ever had at Tech. It would be ashame to see him go elsewhere. He is a talented coach and well worth keeping. It would be well worth making the effort to resolve the issues that are causing the impasse.

I’ve learned from secret sources what the four items are in the contract and are bringing about the impasse. Pay attention and tell me what you think the administration could or should do:

Item #1–Mike wants to be able to wear (at any time) an official under armour pirate eye patch whenever the mood hits him.

Item #2–Mike wants a Starbucks installed at Jones AT&T stadium, and for the family, fans, and the administration to refer to him as “Beano.”

Item #3–Mike wants the term “Mad Scientist” made a criminal offense, punishable by death by having to be buried alive by that idiot “Mouth Brentburger” (aka Brent Mussburger)

Item#4–Lastly, Mike simply wants TV announcers to properly refer to Texas Tech as “T-E-X-A-S T-E-C-H”, instead of inexorably butchering our simple name with mistakes such as “Texas”, “Texas A&-er um…Tech or some other abomination. We are the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Get it right!

Myers, Hance. Get off your collective butts and stop screwing around. Take off your stupid changes and get the contract signed. If Leach does not sign because of your stupidities, Texas Tech needs to kick both your butts out, replace you both with some intelligent people and sign Leach. This is horendous and you dang well know it.

    Hey Mike,

There’s an O genius named Malzahn over at Auburn who’ll make a great head coach in two years. And it won’t take him seven years to realize you cannot beat the big boys even half of the time if you have a half-baked defense. C’mon. $2.5 million a year! That’s some serious small-market weatherman money.

    HELP!!!!
Are the Tech administrators the thickest people in the world? When are they going to realize that Gerald Myers is the problem – not even the tiniest part of the solution? He passed his prime years ago and has become a hanger-on [a Typical Tech phenomenon], and they’re allowing it.
Myers has become that embarrassing uncle at all your family reunions, part of the family, so he’s still around but a great annoyance, contributing nothing to the joy and merriment; someone who invariably ends up saying or doing [both, in Gerald’s case] something stupid, ruining the event for all.
    FIRE MYERS – NOW!!!!
Women’s bskb – in the dumper.
Men’s bskb – turned the program over to the unproven son-of-a- legend and – ditto, dumper city.
Football – Apparently, an unbelievable irritant for Leach, and when Myers finally succeeds in driving Leach out, it’ll be back to that good ol’ mediocrity for which Tech was known, that the Tech admin and the myriad casual fans too readily accepted, pushing Tech to wind up behind A&M, which Leach has owned, and, maybe, being on a par with Baylor.
Quite the legacy you’re creating for yourself, Gerald.
    FIRE MYERS – NOW!!!!
Come on, Gerald, if you have another lucid moment soon and see what you’ve done to the Tech athletic program, please make the right move and retire. Otherwise, Tech admin, it’s on you to . . .
    FIRE MYERS – NOW!!!!

Then what is the issue? If you’re going to speak out about it, give the details. My guess is clauses which relate to buyouts and visiting other schools without permission, etc, etc. That shouldn’t be an issue for someone who wants to be at Tech long term. I like Coach Leach, but he is overplaying his hand here. Get this thing done before it gets to the point of no return for one or both sides.

Ok you pieces of poop! Guess I am out of the can for now. While there I met his freakin agent – you know, the one from New York – the one that was in the Chicago Mickey Mouse Club as a kid with Bill Ayers and Rev Wright! Anyway, the agt said 3 of the items could be dismissed if only the 4th was allowed: If you remember 2nd episode of Pirates of the Carribean – ya remember at the end of the movie the dog on the beach in the throne – well, he says Mike only wants a picture of himself on the beach throne and it be placed outside Gerald’s office. At least a dog knows when to scratch on the door to be let out.

I say pull Leach’s extension and tell him he has 2 years remaining on his contract and he better win the conference in 1 of those 2 years or the contract won’t be renewed. Then, after he begs to get the extension back to sign, tell him it now has a significant buyout clause if he wants to sign. I like what Leach has done for Tech, but I hate the toying with other jobs every year. No coach is bigger than Tech.

My bet is that the primary “sticking point” in Leach’s contract is TTU’s insertion of a high dollar buy-out to avoid Leach from shopping his services at the end of each football season. Would any TTU fan disagree with the administration including a substantial buy-out?

I’m generally on Leach’s side but as badly as he got out-coached by Stoops and Nutt, that $2.5 mil is a lot of dough. Maybe the contract requires him to actually make adjustments during the games. That would be a shock to his system.

And I don’t blame Tech for wanting him to stop interviewing for every job that comes open. What part of ‘under contract’ does he not understand? Could be that Tech wants an actual long-term commitment before they pay long-term money – that’s a sincere commitment, not just a term on some papers.

Its a part of life, and our job is to make this one the most appealing for the best coach. Mike fits that bill, and you need to stop worrying about jumping ship. If he does, then we can go get the next Spike (gag) that you mentione and we can all fall asleep at games again.
