Tech WR leaving football behind
BY DON WILLIAMS l AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Texas Tech wide receiver Todd Walker has decided to give up football, his position coach Dennis Simmons said Wednesday.
“He’s going to finish out the semester and graduate early and go to dental school,’’ Simmons said.
Walker has one year of football eligibility remaining. He battled injuries that often kept him off the field for the Red Raiders.
Walker’s best season was in 2006, when he caught 21 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns.
In the season just completed, he had seven catches for 37 yards.
Walker’s top two performances came in dramatic comeback victories in 2006. In a 38-35 overtime win at Texas El-Paso, he made five catches for 47 yards. His 12-yard reception set up Alex Trlica’s game-winning 49-yard field goal.
In Tech’s historic, 44-41 overtime win over Minnesota at the Insight Bowl, he caught five passes for 68 yards. Tech’s NCAA record comeback started with the Red Raiders trailing the Golden Gophers 38-7 in the second half. On Tech’s first scoring drive of the third quarter, Walker caught a 20-yard pass on third-and-6. To set up the next touchdown, he made a 14-yard catch on fourth-and-11.
It’s got to be tuff to call it quits. Thanks for the memories and best of luck to you!

We appreciate all your hard work… best wishes in dental school.

TW is a good football player who has his priorities in place. College athletics is more about college than athletics in some programs, that is important, IMHO.
I enjoyed the good play from TW and hope the very best for him in the world of dentistry.

Good luck TW.
On another note, does anyone know how schollies work for sure. Do we get three extra for this year with Crabtree, Williams and Walker all leaving early?

That might be 3 more scholarships, I’m not sure. I’m thinking there might be a limit to the maximum you can give out in any year.
Boy, sure seems like a lot of uncertainty going on with this program.
Around the hubaplex, a lot of people I talk to about the team, are confused about the stability of our program. Right or not, our recruits are sensing the same thing. I’m really interested if Leach and Co. can pull out of this in a positive way for Tech.
After this year’s only 2 loss season, we don’t want to slip much.

I think the over confidence leading into the cotton bowl and the devistation at Oklahoma have shown that Leach is a good coach and a brilliant technician, but not a great coach. The upcomming year will be yet another challange, higher expectations and national superstars gone. Will we fall back to the 7-5s of the world?
Leach has a chance to be a great coach but that will shine in years like 09 and not so much when all things are going his way.
Potentially why he wanted to negotiate before the start of the 08 season!

Who is Leach?

Don’t worry at least 9-3 next year.

Leach is a free-agent coach. Nobody can figure what school he will be a great coach at..

I didn’t even think about the kids kicked off the team this year. Should be more than just three schollies available. Of course it does no good if there is a cap.
